I always thought law, at least in India, wouldn’t be as affected compared to firms outside. Entry-level roles will be impacted, no doubt, since AI can already do much of the grunt work better and faster than A0s. To begin with, law firms in India don’t have as many employees as firms abroad. However, over time, the cost of deploying AI may become substantially higher than employing an A0. Indian law firms don’t charge as much as foreign firms, but the cost of AI tools will likely be similar to that in Western countries, maybe not immediately, but eventually it will. AI is also a tool that requires continuous training, which adds high costs for firms. As a result, firms will have to increase prices to make profits or at least satisfy investors by demonstrating that returns on their AI investments are possible. As prices rise, and given that Indian firms do not charge as much to their clients (compared to firms abroad), it may ultimately be more economical to hire associates instead of relying heavily on AI.

Arvind Kejriwal deliberately threw a spanner in the liquor scam appeal proceedings by questioning the probity of a High Court judge. This episode also consumed considerable judicial resources. Given how strongly the Delhi Bar claims to stand united, why isn’t it supporting one of its own (i.e. the learned judge and her son and daughter - both budding lawyers who did not deserve such public smearing), and condemning Kejriwal’s actions?

Im a tech lawyer with 10 years PQE. my advice is dont focus only on data. you will join a big4 or a company as a data protection lawyer and then 4 years later you'll be bored and no one will hire you for other tmt work because you dont have any other work experience. we interview data protection experts from big4 all the time and for teams that dont have separate departments for data vs other tech work, these people are largely unemployable because they dont know anything else. if you feel this will remain your area of interest always then go for it but the DPDPA buzz will die down in a few years and my take is that it will get boring

Those outside of the top 3 NLUs often need some additional topping on their CV, especially those from low-ranked NLUs, Symbi, Amity etc. Other than LLMs, some go for proper MBAs from IIM and ISB. Hi, there seems to be no transparency in what ITC pays, especially to its laterals.

While campus hires get paid the mythical 24lpa, I was informed that they dont pay their laterals this much, even if they come with significantly more work experience.

Trust me when I tell you that the process for appointment itself is the punishment. The timelines on paper for interviews are never followed. Pls do not bank on this exam dreaming of an LR position only because of pay. Move on. Apart from LLM or disputes chambers clerkships have zero value in India.

Other than tier 1s and 2s, no litigation "paymaster" pays well. Which is why it isn't worth starting a career in litigation unless you're doing it from a tier 1. If you start with a chamber or boutique, your chances of switching also reduce because Tier 1s only recruit from other tier1s or 2s.

Ah yes, the classic “just do the LSE summer school” advice, as if law firm hiring works like collecting souvenir badges.

If a two-week crash course were enough to meaningfully signal expertise in competition law economics, firms wouldn’t spend years evaluating candidates on actual academic depth, internships, research, and demonstrable legal reasoning. These programs are interesting exposure at best. It's not some secret hiring hack that suddenly makes recruiters overlook everything else.

Also, let’s not pretend access is equal here. Dropping a few lakhs on a short course abroad isn’t a neutral “choice” everyone can casually make....it’s a privilege. Treating it like a baseline expectation just shows a disconnect from how most candidates actually navigate this field.

So no, I’m not skipping it because I “haven’t thought of it.” I’m skipping it because I’d rather invest time and money into things that actually move the needle in a hiring decision, instead of chasing brand-name optics.

You’re fumbling because you’re anticipating a fumble; you’re worried about slipping out nonsense or just not being able to respond at all. This is like performing anxiety, the more you think about it, the more it wouldn’t happen. Some things that I have learnt so far:

Indifference- This is of utmost importance imo. If you hold the other person in high regard, put them on a pedestal in your head, you’re signalling your brain that you’re inferior -> resulting in it being overly critical of itself -> leading to overthinking during the most banal of small talks.

Breath work- General anxiety causes short breaths with a stiff core and gut. Due to this deep breaths feel unnatural and often performative. Read judgements out loud, shouting from the base of your gut and not straining your throat. Keep varying speed, volume and intonation- ultimately striving towards sounding as natural as possible. It helps to pretend you’re in front of the bench or sitting at a mediation.

Proof of work- Self awareness won’t do jack unless your brain knows it has the capacity to get out of hardships. Since you’ve been doing good academically and you already know how to push out of your comfort zone during public speaking, you have only minor things to work on. Remind yourself of the last difficult situation that you successfully got out of and then talk to strangers with that temporary confidence. Make purposeful eye contact, keep the breath in check, don’t think about how you might be coming off, try to initiate banter regardless of the other person’s gender (trying to be funny is way more important than landing a good joke).

Self improvement- The only source of permanent confidence. Get above average at a skill, preferably that can be publicly exhibited, but do it nonetheless if it cannot. Hit the gym, not necessarily to be in shape, but the endorphins that are released in the morning help you out till late evenings, even later. Watch content that increases your focus time and not one that gives you short bursts of dopamine. You don’t want to wire your brain to anticipate every conversation to be interesting/engaging. You need to be / appear to be invested in the other person if they bore you.

Teach- Since you have one more year left, try to take tutorials. 4th year was relatively free when I was in law school (23 grad). When you learn with the goal of teaching, it not only builds expertise for yourself but also increases clarity in dissemination of information. If you have the time, try to look into parliamentary debates of old statutes when they were bills, what was the socioeconomic status of the country during a landmark judgement was passed etc.-> knowing a “fun fact” or an off angle insight will prompt your brain to blurt it out and eventually become an interesting speaker.

All the best, make the best of the remaining year, don’t curl up in your bed after class, idk you but remember: not drinking does not put you at a higher moral ground- it is only a personal choice; and failure is simply another chance to excel.

Having a supportive circle—both within and outside work—has made a tangible difference for me. I’ve found that being around people who genuinely listen, encourage, and offer constructive feedback (rather than being dismissive or overly critical) helps rebuild confidence, especially on difficult days. Workplaces, particularly in law, can be quite harsh in how feedback is delivered, and early on, that can feel overwhelming. While you can’t always control that environment, you can choose where to invest your time. I’ve consciously tried to spend more time with people who are respectful and to build connections outside work through hobbies, social settings, and family interactions—it helps create a more balanced perspective.

One thing I’ve learned the hard way is that you don’t need to restrict your work circle to people at the same PQE, age group or fellow interns. At one point, I did that and found it limiting, especially when that group wasn’t very supportive. It’s completely okay to step back from such circles. Instead, I’ve benefited far more from being around people—whether senior or junior—who are open, encouraging, and value what I bring to the table.

I am a 3rd year student at a T1 NLU. Recently I have revisited a contract who might be able to help me get a T1 internship.

But the problem is that I don’t really have an impressive CV, and have a middling CGPA. At this stage will it be okay to apply for the intership or will I inevitably get rejected? Also if I get rejected will it become impossible to apply to the same form again.

Doesn't do any harm. If you however really want your application to be read, please try to stick to these: (i) Research about the partner a bit, and especially the kind of work the partner does. No point in emailing a litigation partner that you have great interest in Capital Markets or vice versa. (ii) Send some writing samples with your application. (iii) Stand out. Everybody says they have a thirst for knowledge & they're fast learners, or their life will change with this internship as this was their dream. See what distinguishes you from all other candidates vying for the same spot. It could be outside law too. (iv) Keep following up but politely and in regular intervals. There is no shame in that but don't do it every second day.

Used to happen to me to. I realised it used to happen when i felt that the person in front of me knows more than me. If this is your issue, train your mind to believe that you deserve to be in the room you're in and deserve to be heard. Literally fake it till you make it. Also figure out what are some limiting beliefs that you have. For instance, you said you have always been shy and an introvert. Is this a belief that you have (maybe because of past experience or because you've always been told this by your parents/teachers) and you genuinely now believe that you cannot be a good speaker because you are shy and an introvert? Again, this was me too and then one day I was thinking about all my recent public speaking engagements and I realised, wait, im actually not bad at this if I prepare enough, it was just a belief I had because I was constantly told as a kid that "I dont talk enough" or teachers told me I couldnt take part in a debate because they've never heard me speak in class

1 - CAM & SAM pay much more than Spice Route.

2 - Depends how you look at it. CAM does diligence work primarily. SAM does some good advisories, but doesn't have that much work. Spice route's Fintech team does a lot of advisories, but TMT team basically does corporate work for TMT clients.

3 - Spice Route has seen more exits than anyone. The other two are on par with T1 culture.

4 - Stay long enough, and you'd get promoted anywhere. That said, CAM has a bigger team so comparatively an easier route vs SAM. Haven't seen someone I know stay long enough at Spice Route, so no idea that way.

Okay so as someone who has collected high end Swiss and Japanese watches, people don’t really care. Apart from a few well known brands like Rolex, no one outside the horologist echo chamber would even be remotely (until u shove it in their face) impressed let alone consider it flashy.
