before joining be absolutely clear on what your priorities are. If you are someone who is looking for training with standard, I cannot think of a better place than Touchstone, and a better partner than Anirudh.

The firm is growing - there are no dedicated teams for each partner, so you are pretty much working in a pool system. From leading calls to running client meetings -you very well become a part of everything that happens within the firm.

The firm genuinely has an open door policy - where the partners are open to listening, understanding, and engaging with you!

I am gonna graduate soon. I have decent internship experience from a t3 nlu should I settle for any small firm or in house I can get or wait for a good opportunity (although it seems bleak) given my past experiences at good known firms. I want a decent pay and brand name to atleast justify up my clgs exorbitant fees. not interested in litigation or research roles. some of my peers are well placed although majority in same boat as me.

Projects is a low billing, high volume work. Unless its Projects M&A, and even then most clients I have seen are utter misers who want bucketloads of work and pay lesser effective per hour rates. What that translates into is a high volume workload and you can kiss your life goodbye. But otherwise, depending on your personality, the work is sort of interesting. And given the stage that our country is in, Projects work will only grow and there is a lot of headroom in the market, lot of demand for lawyers who can put up with the BS that comes with working in this vertical. The reason getting a PPO is easy is because Projects teams bleed associates like the battleground of Kalinga. Very few people have the mental strength to put up with the work, and I do not mean it is a compliment.

Rather than praise a woman being elevated directly to a SC judge for only the second time ever, or praising GLC Coimbatore, you wish to ram NLSIU into the discussion. More than half of the current crop of NLS advocates in the SC are either second/third gen or very well connected to the field already so it won't be as acclamatory for NLS as it would be for the parents/senior of who gets elevated in most cases

NLU Nagpur anyday. Evolving culture especially with regards to mooting, evolving placement and PPOs scenario, decent infra (hostel for 1st years is offcampus - bit of a hassle but not a dealbreaker in the case), good academic - very moderately rigorous but not that you dont get time for yourself, growing alumni network with decent placements this year. Overall decent and definitely be worth it considering the BO31

If you are getting it (EVEN in the late vacancies till August end), just go for it. In the alternative - DSNLU - CNLU

Disputes team at firms like B&P, Nisith Desai, Saraf & P, Argus, they are among the best and the most worthy to grab immense knowledge relating to disputes. Also these firms have a major highlight of selecting interns via a assessment for all (especially, B&P) and which is great in order of not to create any disparity.

India is not a signatory to the refugee convention and there is no legal framework under Indian laws for illegal immigrants to "seek asylum". Also, there's no such thing as "human rights" for illegal immigrants, rights are "legal" and exist to the extent and in the manner provided by law; and people who have violated our sovereignty by entering the country illegally do not have any.

We are almost at the 6 month mark and already seen lot of movement at senior levels across firms. Why do people move after spending years at a place? What makes them choose where they go? What do firms look at when considering these movers? and most importantly - how do firms that lose senior level rainmakers cope with such losses? Do they introspect and change their ways? Have they?

Would be good to have a healthy discussion on this.

I am from the 2027 batch and did an internship with them in the first quarter of 2026. The mentor/internship coordinator told me that my feedback is good, but there is currently no vacancy, and that they would recommend me if an opening comes up next year. They also said they would definitely recommend me for a callback next year, and by then, an opening would come up.

What are the chances of having a vacancy, and how often does this happen with an intern?

kiddo you know nothing about the scene - Projects is by far one of those practices where openings for freshers is bare minimum across all the tier 1s; which look typically look out for A0s with 2-3 years of PQE in hardcore projects transactions/disputes from Tier 2 firms or inhouse infrastructure companies.

Also, its getting highly specialized with infrastructure - M&A, financing and disputes operating within specialist silos of people who are also now doing sector driven work in the renewable energy segment alongside old school oil and gas and government sector clients. The margins in transactions (both M&A and project finance) as well as disputes is so sleek that its difficult to make it rain regardless of you being at Tier 1 or a boutique, on top of which there is attrition and the whole junior-senior crunch.

Now coming to Trilegal - I would rank the whole infrastructure and projects vertical top 3 in India (would still put CAM - Project Finance Trilegal - M&A/Project Development and JSA - Electricity Litigation; in that order) given how specialized and top heavy the partnership pool is with very cream and complex mandates. However, as a fresher joining such a firm straight out of college (albeit as a campus hire or a PPO) would be a nightmare given how much time it takes to grasp the complexity of both the practice and the kind of work the firm does.

Lastly, rethink Projects as a practice because post 2030 - the RE push is likely to slow down, financing will ease out and fewer M&A deals shall take place. And across tier 1s - the M&A teams have started doing the Projects DD, the B&F teams have started picking up project finance mandates, the Real Estate team picks up the land DD and other miscellaneous issues and Disputes teams have been specializing in electricity litigation.

As I understand it, the CAA fast-tracks citizenship applications by non-Muslim citizens of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Applications by Muslim citizens are kept in the normal queue and take longer to process. Am I correct in this, or did I misunderstand?

If yes, then is the argument that this violates Article 14 of the Constitution, or anything else?

If it’s an Article 14 argument, isn’t this a permissible differentiation, given the atrocities against Hindus and Buddhists (Chakmas) in Bangladesh? Or against Hindus, Sikhs and Christians in Pakistan? Plus the institution of a Taliban govt in Afghanistan which doesn’t treat non-Muslims as equals?

If the argument is that Muslims in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan also suffer from persecution (for example, political opponents), then can’t they claim asylum in other Muslim countries or the West? Isn’t it a defensible argument that India and Nepal are the only Hindu-majority countries in the world and can prioritise members of that faith and civilisation? Just like the US/EU raises the issue of discrimination against Christians and gives Christians from Muslim countries asylum? And doesn’t India anyway give political asylum to Muslim like Taslima Nasreen, Sheikh Hasina etc?

bump, the fact that every expense must "justified" so that they have the right to claim every fucking penny for which the students had to skip classes and internships for only to go around chambers and firms begging for sponsorship - its nothing but another way to get more hands on money for them to splurge on.

When economists use mathematical and statistical techniques, it is called econometrics. That is a STEM subject. In India, ISI would be a good example, and BS Economics from IITs. All require a very strong science and mathematical background.

NLUs are 'humanities-heavy' - meaning their flagship programmes are BA-LLB, and almost all faculty and students have a background/preference for humanities (without any need for science). Almost all students in all NLUs have exposure to science only up to Class 10. Imagine the hue and cry if NLUs were to make Class 12 science mandatory for admission. A glimpse of that is also visible in how students actually look down upon BSc-LLB as against BA-LLB in the NLU ecosystem. The current NLU students do feel 'threatened' by science, hence this is how that fear gets manifested. They see NLUs as the last resort for those who dislike or fear science. Every other avenue is dominated by science - IITs, NITs, AIIMS, and even IIMs.

If one has to constantly justify the 'value' of subjects like philosophy, history, and literature, then that in itself is a red flag about their relevance in a modern, tech-driven world. Useful subjects are useful - they do not need justification. Everyone knows.

This then comes back to the question. Are NLUs even prepared to make this big paradigm shift? This will disrupt their entire operating model.

Outside of law firms, the opportunities are fairly limited. If you are good with contracts work on the side, then there's still some scope with tech companies who are doing these agreements with clients and vendors day in day out. There's a bit of work with production houses and OTT platforms as well. Core transactions is hard in house until funds in India are so invested that they start hiring niche pratice specialists.

IIT and IIM are central universities, so the Bengal government is indeed more likely to be concerned with NUJS. Also, according to media reports, the education portfolio is likely to be by bifurcated into primary education and higher education. Swapan Dasgupta is expected to get the higher education portfolio. This means that his attention will solely be focused on state universities. So NUJS should definitely receive greater priority.

The biggest change so far is in the composition of the GC. Since the majority of people were TMC politicians and supporters, almost the entire GC will be replaced. After that, the EC will follow.

However, the X factor is faculty loyalty. Certain profs and their family members are deeply embedded in the TMC ecosystem. They will surely change colours and sing praises of the BJP now. But will the BJP accept them and keep them in positions of influence at NUJS? Or will centre-right professors take centre stage?

Those fleeing the country are themselves giving interviews to TV channels saying they were given identity documents by the TMC, as well as subsidies, and instructed to keep voting for the TMC. They are saying that they are leaving India since the BJP is now in power in Bengal and threatening to put them in detention camps. Like in Bengal, they have also settled in Assam.

It does make a difference, but the quantum of the difference largely depends on your goal. Every t1 has some things nailed down perfectly. If your aim is getting a domestic job, all of them are equally placed and you'll get the support, help etc that you need (institutionally through day zero, or otherwise from seniors etc to get yourself a ppo). For vac schemes, all others except gnlu (given that they have the least tc/vs holders, might be largely because it's newer than other t1s) might be equally placed, with ofc nls and nluj probably taking the crown (which once belonged to nujs). For academics (as a pathway to llms, scholarships etc), I would say nls, nlud, nalsar, nluj and then nujs (in that order). This all ofc very subjective

You can end up at the same place as a t1 college person. You might have to work a tad bit harder, but its not impossible. Sometimes fate has a big role to play. I agree w this comment, you should join hnlu and attempt again (if you can afford it). Just don't become complacent once you join. It's very easy to get lost in everything- orientations, new subs, new city, ne profs, new friendsetc. Getting into a t1 nlu is 105% worth it. It'll open more doors for you than you can imagine. But if not, it's okay, don't get disheartened. You can be successful, make connections, and have fun

Instead of throwing about invective as if it were confetti on Valentine's Day, could you instead be a Rhodes Scholar + Oxford DPhil yourself, get Paul Craig to supervise you, get your book published by OUP, get yourself successfully to become the Ambedkar consti prof at Columbia and then re-enter the muck that is Indian academia to run that university? Very easy to talk as though your opinion matters a hoot. Many projects take a long time before fruition, and no doubt mistakes have been made along the line. But please put forward a better vision. If you think Sudhir has made mistakes, please get Tarunabh Khaitan back and get him to run the uni instead. Already, there are reputation questions about him among the British, or so I have heard from my academic connections among them. They claim that he feels he needs to be the centre of whatever room he walks into. I also know him slightly, and I have questions about these charges. But in any case, now he's managed to put people's backs up. Why don't you, as the one with a fresh vision for NLS, make the arrangements for him to take a fresh start, back where it all began? Frankly, one part of me would be happy if what those people who have charged Tarun with being arrogant have said is true. Sudhir is a gentleman, perhaps that is why things aren't moving farther and faster. Hi I'm a private university bba LLB grad. I was placed in an insurance company legal claims team through campus. However now I'm finding that there is very slim scope of growth and learning anything further especially which I like. I'm pursuing ICSI as well.

I would like to switch to a law firm with a decent disputes practice so I can learn better things. The thing is I interned at some tier 2 and tier 3 firms and got exposure to IBC, arbitration and commercial litigation and want to work further in that field.

At the time of graduating the insurance role was safest for me so I went with it. Now it's also becoming a bottleneck because most small firms aren't even willing to pay me what I make at the company and also saying that I will have to start as a fresher.

I'm finding it increasingly hard to get even a callback from law firms and even the ones I had interned at are not hiring. Anyone have any advice on what I might be doing wrong with my applications and how you had gotten out of a similar situation?

I'm a BO'25 HNLU so I feel im in a reasonable position to tell you this:

1. Join HNLU and attempt CLAT for the third time. HNLU isn't Tier 1 and sure, like you said, GNLU is miles ahead in terms of placements but HNLU is a decent option to fall back on. Yes, your college tag does matter. I've seen it play out in real life.

2. Like you said, you had a brain fade moment in the past. I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news but there are a number of things that could go wrong with this exam (ex. - errors in questions).

3. It is fantastic that you have a burning desire in you to get to a T1 and by all means do try again. Just don't become delusional and get so ahead of yourself that you forget that you need an insurance policy. Whether you get a T1 next year or not will depend upon your work ethic and luck. All the best for that.

Really depends on what you're looking for and what your financial conditions are like. An LLM makes your case stronger for being hired by foreign law firms rather than if you did not do one at all. But bear in mind you'll still be facing a massive uphill battle in breaking in to a top US or other international firm, you'll just be slightly better placed. On the positive side, just the fact that you interact with people from all over the world on a day-day basis and get to learn from faculty who are miles ahead of their Indian counterparts does upskill you massively. We're in a profession where being able to interact with and hold a genuine conversation with people from around the world is a key differentiating factor as you go up the ladder (in terms of BD). An LLM from a top university helps massively. I'm not saying you can't develop those skills or similar contacts otherwise, just that an LLM makes it much easier. With that being said, there is a huge cost associated with the LLM - both financially and in terms of opportunity cost (though the opportunity cost pales in comparison to the benefits discussed). The financial component is however very significant and I'd say by and large dispositive.

### You are a student of the very first batch of the five year integrated law course, introduced for the very first time in India. We would love to know about your college. Was there any confusion/mismanagement, considering it was a new concept?

Yes, I belong to the very first batch (1983-88) of the 5-Year integrated law course after higher secondary, introduced for the very first time in India in the year 1983. Our college those days (Coimbatore Law College, Bharatiar University, Tamil Nadu) was run in a rented premises. There were very few classrooms during the first year since we were the only batch and the rest of them were three year law students. We had a small library and a very small room for sports activities.

Our syllabus was structured similar to the present syllabus, but it was not very detailed. We also studied subjects like Sociology, Economics, Legal History, History and Legal Language & Legal Writing etc. during the first two years. The rest of the three years we had subjects like Family Law, Transfer of Property, Constitutional Law, Income Tax, Insolvency, IPC, Evidence Act, CPC and Cr.PC along with Drafting, Pleading and Conveyancing.

There was no confusion or mismanagement and, of course, the infrastructure was limited. There were few teachers and we had hardly two to three classes a day and only one session either morning or afternoon. There was no hostel for girls and there were very few girls in the class.

I really wish. I believe in taking active steps and naming and shaming cause who wants to let a man, who needs to unlearn, just get an LI thread. It deserves a whole unlearning experience. You can’t excuse bad behavior and texts (in my case) by an LI thread.

I took active steps, informed the HR by showing the messages being written to me and if it’s you, be grateful it’s not publically but internally.

There are many small firms that offer remote IP internships, for example, Satyaki Legal. Find out the mail, apply, wait, and follow up. If the desired month is not available, follow up for another month that works for you. For big firms like Anand & Anand, try looking for connections (college/school alumni) or cold-mailing or texting on LinkedIn. Be specific and intentional (team, month, mode). The key is to keep following up with them, given that they show interest in you. Don't be afraid to reach out to senior associates you don't know; there are many people out there who are helpful and willing to guide you if you show genuine interest. But of course, if someone doesn't show interest, leave them alone. Another thing is to publish articles and commentaries, and to participate in IP-related competitions/quizzes. As someone in this field, I would suggest you study tech law alongside IPR. Don't be discouraged if you don't get replies at first, and don't give up. Best of luck!!

Recently, MNLU Mumbai released a guide on procuring sponsorships and encourages students to do so for participating in international competitions. However, with this measure, the university has washed its hands of any obligation to provide funding for students, as if any student procures sponsorship, everything from the registration fee to travel costs are deducted from it first with the university only contributing to costs exceeding the sponsorship. Additionally, the university requires receipts for all sponsorship spending and reserves the right to reject claims. The issue is, the university has done absolutely nothing to help students achieve these sponsorships- it’s 100% the student’s efforts from contacting advocates to law firms. Despite it all, the university can now unilaterally claim the efforts of students under this policy, claiming it’ll save the sponsorship money for future editions of the same moot (which itself is contingent on something participating in the same moot and reaching the international stage once more). This is blatant abuse of power and just another evidence of the university’s corrupt practices (like 10 years and no campus?) If anyone has experienced this at their university, how did you handle it? Is there any legal ground under which student efforts for procuring sponsorships can be preserved and not given to this ▮▮▮ institution?

interned there in my final year for 2 months [feb '23-mar'23]. Was lucky to get back to back slots as the intern who was supposed to join in march backed out and due to my good rapport with the associates I got called back. got paid 15k p/m. Was exposed to deals within my first week and the associates were really sweet and helped me with a plethora of things even going as far as including and crediting me in front of partners. The partner was also super chill yet firm when it came to deliverables, also gave constructive feedback. But as they say, all good things must come to an end. Inevitably, in spite of great reviews, wasn't considered for a full time offer (owing to the fact that i was from a no-name private law school) but had a great internship experience there. Would recommend to get hands on experience but not for long term).

P.s. this is just my personal experience for a short 2 month stint and considering that a lot of people have negative opinions about the firm, i would suggest that you apply and find out for yourself. also the entire cohort of associates that was there when i was interning was relatively younger (max pqe was 4) and have all left and moved on to amazing T1 corp/m&a/pe/vc teams and in-house roles. Hi there. I was in this position a few years ago. The firm I used to work with desperately wanted me out since they did not like me, and I was thrown under the bus for the gross negligence of a senior. I was unemployed for 9 months. At least 10 to 12 interview rejections. I never gave up. Thereafter, I finally got into a tier 3 and worked my way up, today I am an SA in another tier 3. Took a lot to wipe off the black mark from that disgusting firm. But here I am today. Still surviving. Do not give up OP. Keep up the sincerity and hardwork. Good things will come your way.

PS: One of the firms which rejected me during my struggling days, despite my almost pleading for a chance, interviewed me once my career was back on track. This time, I rejected them, and they pleaded me, but I refused them. Things will turn around for you too as long as you are sincere. Look for good people to work with.

There are only 6 T1 Law colleges properly in India, NLS, NALSAR, NUJS, NLUJ, GNLU and NLUD.

How are they ranked in 2026 ?
There used to be a time NLIU used to above GNLU and NLUJ but that has since fallen and NLIU would be somewhere in T1.5. While NUJS and NALSAR used to be top 3 above NLUD, now NLUD has claimed to be #2 although placements may not be as strong as other T1(s).

As far as I know NUJS, NLS and NALSAR hold the best placements record with GNLU trying to enter that league with over 40 + PPO(s) and over 70 placements by Day Z, which will probably and sadly make it another Corporate factory despite GLASS. NLUJ has always been decent although people have started keeping GNLU over it.

My rankings would be -
NLS
NALSAR/NLUD
NUJS
GNLU/NLUJ (although one can keep them above NUJS if they are willing to sacrifice alumni base and a better peer group for other facilities)

How would you rank them honestly ? And your 2 cents on how much difference does it make being in any of them ?

My team takes care of the IP due diligence aspect for any acquisitions, merger, investments etc. we also look into specific IP related contracts like technology transfer, specific IP transfer agreements. (that depends on deal to deal). Prosecution work is also there but we receive a lot of advisory mandates as well.

Hi, OP here.

In part it is from ease of common law jurisdiction that I would enjoy having done my undergrad in India. Alternatives like the USA are so actively hostile right now that I'm at odds with considering (I acknowledge that the UK is no snowflake either, it however a matter of relative comparison). I would want to consider the EU but I know that short of say C1 levels of native language fluency I will achieve nothing, so overall I'm inclined for the UK, notwithstanding the challenges I'd face there (which is part and parcel for anybody wanting to go abroad in this climate).

If you are asking why abroad ?, that should be self explanatory. I was born lucky to afford such affluence and I desire to not rot my life away in whatever this country is.

I understand everyone is angry and rightly so; a life has been lost. But are we really going to convict a person based on what we have seen in the media? Most of us are lawyers. Lets understand the process required to hold someone guilty. Note: I am not condoning any behaviour here. I'm just saying, follow the law, as we have learnt. I'd think at the very least BCI ought to have sent him a SCN.
