We want LI to be one of the friendliest places on the internet, where lawyers and law students help each other with their career related queries and occasionally discuss other stuff that might affect their lives too. In other words:
1. Be kind, respectful and helpful to each other.
2. Be bona fide, truthful, genuine and curious.
3. Assume the best intention of others.

Lesser than them^, but ek thaali ke chatte bhatte hai :)
Let me give you just a sample of terrorist activities done by Khalistanis.
A) Downing of Air India Flight 182 on route from Montreal to London killing all 329 on board.
B) Another such act was planned simultaneously. Even though two baggage handlers at Tokyo lost their lives when the bomb exploded prematurely it saved a lot more lives.
C) Assassination of Indira Gandhi
D) Assassination of Retired General Vaidya
E) Assassination of DIG Police Punjab, JS Atwal
F) Assassination of Nirankari Chief Baba Gurbachan Singh
G) Assassination of Punjab Kesari Editor Jagat Narain.
F) Ethnic cleansing on night buses of non-Sikhs
So if they are violent they will get violence. Except they will be at the receiving end.
Why is the venerable DYC so quiet about the state of affairs in GNLU?
Don't believe me? Well, here's the link - https://www.eci.gov.in/eci-backend/public/api/download?url=LMAhAK6sOPBp%2FNFF0iRfXbEB1EVSLT41NNLRjYNJJP1KivrUxbfqkDatmHy12e%2FzBiU51zPFZI5qMtjV1qgjFmSC%2FSz9GPIId9Zlf4WX9G%2FyncUhH2YfOjkZLtGsyZ9B56VRYj06iIsFTelbq233Uw%3D%3D
How is this even possible!!? This list has practically every one else!!Wtf!
Side note - no "TATA" on this list either!! Wondering what happened behind the scenes in the legal departments of these firms. Did they decide on not using this funding route because of the scheme being unconstitutional?
Dear moderators of LI - please show some editorial spine and publish this. Thanks ππΌ
I am 32 and I have a Bsc & MSc in biology from a decent central university in india and when I was 25 went to Australia to study another Masters also in a stem field after which I worked there till I was 31 in data related roles - such as data analyst/data scientist etc. Another relevant bit about my background is that I am really good at canvassing research papers, excellent programmer, used to build computational models and simulations at one point. My background generally helped me alot in understanding the science, models behing climate change.
As of late I have become super interested in climate change and considering pursuing environmental law or policy (leaning a bit more to the law side). I have a valid visa for Australia for another 3 years, but would like to understand my options about pursuing law in Australia vs India & between pursing LLB/JD or an LLM instead. Where will these options take me? I have been reading books on international environmental law, climate change law, climate change litigation in the south/south east asian countries etc. I would like to broadlly focus on either legal research or practising environmental law or a combination of both mostly with a south asian focus.
Since I don't know how law career options progress and the investment it would take, would like a clear picture as I am more familiar with stem career paths. Clearly I am in this because I am passionate, please be kind in your responses. Thanks.
Whatever the statute may say- this is how academia has worked since ages. In india and elsewhere. Administrative duties are just an add on responsibility- youre supposed to deal with other academics as colleagues. Senior and Junior and VC and Dean having power and all is indian feudalism at play. Its a government university. Your job is to serve the people. Not to chase status for yourself.
If any VC wants to actually be successful and leave behind a legacy he will learn to delegate tasks, consult with a wide variety of stakeholders, and trust his faculty and invest in them so they in turn invest in the institution. Thats what the good ones, Menon and MPS etc did.
What is "a democrat"? Menon and MPS were incredibly egalitarian persons who hired people who were good scholars without being territorial and encouraged them to do their best work. Thats a far cry from FM, AD etc.
SC- its difficult to say how much he volunteers for with admin work and how much not- but it is clear that he was a substantial part of the administration, many of the universities initiatives would be in serious peril once he leaves. I dont trust the remaining folks to be as fair as he has been with student related activities either.
He might have encouraged students to lobby for what he saw as the lesser of two evils, but I dont think at any point of time hes been an FM fanboy at all. If you spoke to SC once youd know he has some pretty harsh criticisms for AD and FM both on their work as scholars and their behaviour as administrators. Hes one of the few who would raise questions at faculty meetings and such and generally be a loyal opposition looking out for the institution. The institution will suffer without him.
Lets look at it another way. Can your law firm provide high quality legal services? The answer to this question is pretty much a no, without any doubt. So the bottom line is, can your law firm provide other services to compensate for the lack of quality in your legal service. If yes, you have a law firm.
The citation is R v Kruk, 2024 SCC 7. Link to full case report and exact quote given below:
Para 109: "Where a person with a vagina testifies credibly and with certainty that they felt penileβvaginal penetration, a trial judge must be entitled to conclude that they are unlikely to be mistaken. While the choice of the trial judge to use the words βa womanβ may have been unfortunate and engendered confusion, in context, it is clear the judge was reasoning that it was extremely unlikely that the complainant would be mistaken about the feeling of penileβvaginal penetration because people generally, even if intoxicated, are not mistaken about that sensation."

1) I split work into long focussed sessions and short agile sprints.
Long sessions for drafting / reviewing / structuring / strategic thinking. These require uninterrupted time, no social media or phone interruption and i generally do them in stretches of 1-3 hours (with very limited breaks). This only happens once a day.
Short agile sprints to respond to mails with quick fire comments / delegating / delaying / denying things. These are bulk of the day but all small small things.
2) Second thing that has worked for me best is music. I have music that helps me stay focussed (and it's not some special music / is the usual bollywood, pop etc). So that helps me a lot.
If possible, could you please elaborate as to why do you say so? (Ofc anonymously, but still)
I have been considering applying there as an Associate, not an intern, tbh
However, i don't know anyone having worked there, and have no clue about the culture
Will it be implemented? Very unlikely.
I heard they had revised their pay?
I need help desperately in following things:-
1. Most of the internship done in courts
2. I don't like litigation
3. I want to General Corporate
4. I want to secure an assessment internship or PPO before college ends
Please guide me through this difficult situation.
Thanks

ELP has an indirect tax vacancy at its Mumbai office for a person with PQE 4 to 6 years. I want to see how much does ELP pay before applying to the job.
I have 8 years of experience in Indirect tax litigation and advisory along with little bit of experience in commercial disputes, i want to move to Delhi or Mumbai, preferably Tier 1 LF, what are my options ?
I was in college in Veer Singh era- standard slipped considerably, it became a dispiriting place to be, and the only reason it retained status is because he paid india today for the rankings and because other institutions were in their first years. VS by the way- was thrown out because students hated the state of affairs and the corruption so much sent petitions to the chancellor and got a probe that looked into his corruption. It wasnt students who rested on "status" who made the university a tiny smidge better- it was students who actually worked, and risked bad grades and risked not being hired and took time out of their lives to do so.
NLS was heading in a downward spiral- again it was students who protested and wrote petitions to get a new VC who they may not like all the time- but NO ONE can allege that he has not improved the university by bringing in new faculty or by refusing to participate in grade inflation/ corruption. that is what will save that institution.
Theres no- fixed mentality at work here- "i was best at clat so ill continue to be best" doesnt work. You have to work hard to be a good lawyer and to be a credit to your institution, and when you join law school- thats the beginning and not the end of your journey, you have to leave the place better, not worse, than you found it.
Privilege actually works the other way here- you only stick on at one institution for your entire academic career if you are privileged enough to be in the good graces of those with power. everyone else has to go prove themselves in other institutions, but not the favorites.
You cant keep redefining words and adding qualifications because you dont like the definition. If a person gets their bachelors, masters, and doctorate all at the same institution and then gets a job at the same intitution- that is by definition academic inbreeding. We dont know how people outside nalsar would recognise these people because theyve been too afraid to step outside nalsar in their academic careers.

CAA protest will come back ...but weaker.

I recently shifted from Android (OnePlus) to Apple and I must say that quality, reliability and functionality of iPhone is much superior.
2. Keeping well named, properly sorted, highlighted / bookmarked judgements, so that refering back to them becomes easy.
3. Keeping notes of each matter so that if I have to pick up a file after a long period, I can read the notes and recap the matter fast
4. Keeping several notes for To Do Lists, Billing, Follow Ups, etc
"Learning is not supposed to be fun. It doesn't have to be actively not fun either, but the primary feeling should be that of effort. It should look a lot less like that "10 minute full body" workout from your local digital media creator and a lot more like a serious session at the gym. You want the mental equivalent of sweating. It's not that the quickie doesn't do anything, it's just that it is wildly suboptimal if you actually care to learn. ...So for those who actually want to learn. Unless you are trying to learn something narrow and specific, close those tabs with quick blog posts. Close those tabs of "Learn XYZ in 10 minutes". Consider the opportunity cost of snacking and seek the meal - the textbooks, docs, papers, manuals, longform. Allocate a 4 hour window. Don't just read, take notes, re-read, re-phrase, process, manipulate, learn."
You will have more paid awards(top 420 ,under 69, etc)for doing your shity corp work.
Pay for junior lawyers will be increased by 0.69 percent.
If you are not uncomfortable with it then you do you.
will make you think law isnt that bad a choice after all.

1) the UI is very easy to navigate, making day to day interactions very easy.
2) Apple only apps are really good- notes, reminders, etc.
3) if you already have or are planning to buy a Mac, iPad, AirPods or a watch as well- then youβll have a seamless integration. Itβs beyond comparison.
4) the phone doesnβt get slow at any point.
5) it is cool and associated with reputation (if you care about that, although I donβt think it is a valid reason)
6) for personal life- camera is amazing, FaceTime is great, etc.
7) it has several small features that make your day o day life better.
#2 - yes, ideally, spend/withdraw 50% from your bank a/c.
If 80GG & 80C are applicable in your case, then you should be able to bring down your taxable income to 5.9 lacs and tax liability under old regime should be around ~32k.
Don't blindly trust your CA, ask around with other CAs and tax lawyers
2. Bring lots and lots of summer clothing β winters here are minimal and ephemeral.
3. You get a bed, a cupboard, a bad-ish chair, and a small table. If you need, then consider ordering additional fittings/bookstands from Ikea instead of buying/bringing readymade ones β we have carpenters who'll be happy to install everything for a fraction of the cost.
4. Late night food is difficult to find here, Zomato etc closes down the few options it has at around 9pm. You'll have Ping's, our cafe, open till 12:30, and an average shawarma place till 1am. The vending machines have some soft drinks and junk food. But if you need/want healthy food, then consider investing in a second-hand/non-icemaking fridge so you can order fresh food from Bigg Basket in bulk and store it with you as needed.
5. Don't worry about bringing books right off the bat. The library has most essentials that you can borrow and/or get photostats from, for a fraction of the price.
6. Remember to not pack casteism, racism or classism with you. We want Nalsar to be a welcoming place for people from all backgrounds, and no hostility towards others will be tolerated without call outs. (Alternatively, you can reach out to any seniors yoh feel comfortable with, for anything untoward you go through.)
All the best!
