Since Prime Minister Trudeau's announcement, the world has seen the absurdities of India's media. Indian news commentators have openly spoken of targeting not only Sikhs abroad but also "nuking" PM Trudeau. India is amongst the world's worst ranked countries for press freedom and has historically used its media to target Sikhs, Muslims, Dalits, Christians, and other minorities. Any resistance from our end gets termed as

"extremism" — a tactic used by authoritarian states globally. In light of this past week, the unchecked claims the Indian government has historically presented to the world for years should now be re-examined.

For decades, global human rights organizations have spoken out about the brutality the Indian government has inflicted upon Punjab (the majority Sikh state): from genocides to extrajudicial murders to false flag attacks. In Punjab, human rights workers who've brought evidence to the world about these atrocities have been murdered. There is a long list of suspicious Sikh murders on North American and European soil.

People have a right to self-determination. To dream of sovereignty in the midst of repression does not make anyone a terrorist. Being a member of the Sikh community is at the core of who I am. Sikh principles have guided my art, poetry, and political activism.

The Canadian government must do everything in its power to bring the Indian government to justice.

Assassinations do not scare us. We will only get louder. Regardless of the consequences, we will continue to fight for our right to exist freely. We will continue to stand with those facing injustice”

I genuinely think Trudeau grossly underestimate how India would react somehow. Either that Or he's just v stupid. I think he does not realise how important india is to the world now. I mean sure, we are a poor country but that many ppl = huge market that no country would want to alienate.

I woukd like to point out that Kian/ this moderator has changed the heading of my post - to make Rupi Kaur’s tacit support for Khalistan more paletable. This is not a free speech issue or a bona fide call for self determination. The k-movement is widely recognised (even in the hinterlands of Punjab) as a corrosive misinformation campaign which is being propogated by fringe elements who have picked up the gun.

Kian, please don’t distort this post or suppress the sentiments of the majority in Punjab with your biases. Doing so would be a disservice to the TRUTH.

If you are OP, doesn't sound like you are 'conflicted and confused' at all, as you professed, but have pretty strong and set opinions on the topic? As mentioned below, your original headline was also disingenuous (as potentially this entire thread was, as not appearing a call for a genuine and balanced and unheated discussion)?

You deleted those videos without even watching them. Had you watched them, you would have known that they weren't links to your favorite Republic TV, but instead from a respected, reputed, politically neutral, and liberal channel- operated by no one less than Barkha Dutt. You redacted a true story (interview format) of a grieving wife who lost her husband (the man piloting that aircraft) to the Kanishka hijacking incident. Likewise, the other interview you deleted was of a son who lost his entire family in that Khalistani hijacking. Shame on you, Kian. You are, in my opinion, a blot on Indian journalism. I expected much more of you.

Condemns sikh assisination? I am appauled by your distortion of my words, Kian. Do you know that Nijjar was wanted by the interpol? Did you know that he evded arrest by leaving the country with forged documents? Do you know that his support for the k movement comes with an AK47 in hand (with ISI FUNDING)? Shame on you Kian for sanitising the heading the way you have. Your distortion of the heading tantamounts to making the K-Movement into a Sikh Movement. How irresponsible of you! Aren’t you a lawyer? The k movement is not a sikh movement because it doesn't represent the aspirations of the majority of sikhs. It’s a minority / fringe movement. Kindly reflect that with honesty.

The original headline was distorting the tenor of the post and seemed designed mostly to incite outrage: she did not directly espouse secession in her post, she just said (as quoted by OP) that all people have a right to self-determination (accurate and something no one would dispute), and that dreaming of secession does not a terrorist make (also correct, right?).

If you want to genuinely discuss the legal issues, rather than turning this into a WhatsApp family chat or Republic TV prime time, then the softer and less sensationalist headline should not stop you (or cause such outrage).

The Khalistani terrorism movement, characterized by its secessionist agenda led by a minority faction and, in some instances, resorting to violent means, stands as a challenge to peace and unity. It is important to differentiate between legitimate calls for self-determination and baseless secessionist movements that employ extremist tactics, such as hijacking aircraft, to advance their cause. Such acts are and always should be unequivocally condemned as acts of terrorism, as they pose a threat to the lives and well-being of innocent civilians. Rupi Kaur's post - given the backdrop - condones terrorism. And that's problematic.

As they say sticks and stones may break my bones but words won't hurt me. They can scream as much as they want about Khalistan and nobody cares or at least I personally do. It has as much of a chance of happening as the British, Ottoman or Mongol Empires coming back. People can suffer from hallucinations and delusions and they are entitled to that as long it is not violent. However, once it becomes violent then all bets are off.

Let me give you just a sample of terrorist activities done by Khalistanis.

A) Downing of Air India Flight 182 on route from Montreal to London killing all 329 on board.

B) Another such act was planned simultaneously. Even though two baggage handlers at Tokyo lost their lives when the bomb exploded prematurely it saved a lot more lives.

C) Assassination of Indira Gandhi

D) Assassination of Retired General Vaidya

E) Assassination of DIG Police Punjab, JS Atwal

F) Assassination of Nirankari Chief Baba Gurbachan Singh

G) Assassination of Punjab Kesari Editor Jagat Narain.

F) Ethnic cleansing on night buses of non-Sikhs

So if they are violent they will get violence. Except they will be at the receiving end.

Everyone in India, hates khalistan movement and those who support it, they will even justify extra judicial killings, but they will keep electing MPs and MLAs, who go on to become CMs and Cabinet Ministers who keep peddling rhetoric of Hindu Rashtra, 10 years back I didn't hear anyone talking about khalistan but all of a sudden, hindu khatre me hai, every Sikh protestor is khalistani, there are no takers for this movement in Punjab rn, but If the government keeps stroking the Hindu nation rhetoric and UCC card, there will be and it would be a monster of our own making.

These videos were interviews conducted by Barkha Dutt of the surviving family members of the Khalistani Terrorist Led Kanishka Hijacking - for her YouTube page, Mojo Story. The fact that this moderator felt the need to strike these off and call them propaganda has left me stunned.

The other thing that has my goat is how this moderator has sanitized the heading (for the main post) such that gives the Khalistan Plea credence.

Have reinstated the videos in your post, though neither of those directly related to Kaur's post, which was a criticism of alleged extra-judicial and extra-territorial assassinations and persecution, rather than expressly talking about the Khalistan cause, terrorism, etc.

The sad thing is that this entire thread has been a little disappointing from a legal perspective. Let's assume, for argument's sake, that he had been a convicted terrorist (which he wasn't), whom Canada had refused to extradite. Would India be justified in killing him extrajudicially, in that case? What if he had been an Indian citizen? Does it change anything that he was a Canadian citizen? And how is this different from the extra-judicial drone assassinations of alleged terrorists that the US does, or Russia's or Turkey's or Saudi's assassinations of dissidents abroad?

And does anyone actually consider Khalistani terrorism alive and credible enough, as a threat against India's national sovereignty, etc, to take such alleged measures?

Hey LI MOD - the fact that you preferred to retain the title of this post in its present form and by extension paint this illegitimate, imported, minority and fringe movement as a Sikh Movement leaves me to believe that you are either ill informed / are sympathetic towards an independent Khalistan. My assumption is underpinned by your shockingly baseless and stated belief that the Sikhs were persecuted in India. Your answers rest in the links already shared, supplemented by the interviews that Ujjal Dosanjh has given to Rajdeep Sardessai and Barkha Dutt (in the past 24 hours). I don’t know if India had Nijjar taken down, if she had any role in this - however, given the hopeless circumstances (and precedents set by Canada and the US in the past), she wasn’t left with much of a choice. You are entitled to your support white hypocrisy and indifference towards India and India has every right to preserve its sovereignty - and that can never fly against her constitution and values. After all, the US did the same in Pakistan when taking down Osama - who like these Khalistanis also orchestrated a plane hijacking and crash. Feel free to hold a candle March for Nijjar. You’ll find yourself alone.

Nijjar's encounter is better/ more accurately characterized as a "Khalistani Assassination" and I take strong objection to it being described as just a "Sikh Assassination". Not all Sikhs are Khalistani. Fix that heading, it's false, inflammatory, and derogatory towards the Sikh Community in general.
