Ik Bharucha is known to be a toxic place but wanted to understand if its bearable enough for a year or two. I don't plan on being at the firm for a long time anyways.
Insights on payscale would also be super helpful.
Hey
I'm currently in my fourth year of college soon entering into 5th yr. I could really use some guidance regarding internships and landing a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO).
Being from a Tier 3 NLU and a small city background, I've been diving into different internships to learn and grow. However, I'm at a bit of a crossroads and could use some help figuring out how to turn these internships into a solid PPO opportunity.
I know how important networking and mentorship are, but unfortunately, I don't have someone to guide me through this journey. So, I'm reaching out to see if any of you have any advice, insights, or even a bit of mentorship to offer. Maybe you've been through similar challenges during your college days or know someone who has.
Any support would mean a lot to me as I'm putting in a lot of effort to shine in my internships and make the most of every chance I get. Any help or advice you can share would be awesome.
What should I do in this upcoming year, how should I proceed to secure any good opportunity.
Thanks a ton for taking the time to read this. Don't troll pls.
"it's educated me just fine"
lol sis it's giving delulu to a degree I haven't seen anywhere outside of twitter
NALSAR and NUJS are suffering through one now. For NALSAR it is more recent with FM only just out of the door, for NUJS it has been a while since they had a good VC.
Do not for a moment think that NLS is exempt for such cycles. The decade of Venkata Rao is well documented on LI itself. In fact, Sidharth Chatham, whose imminent departure is causing a lot of these reflections on faculty at NALSAR, had left NLS on concerns of academic future of the place under that leadership.
Also, do note that having a decade of poor leadership has not caused the recruitment outputs of NUJS to suffer. Similarly, NLS' recruitments did not suffer under Venkata Rao. Nor will NALSAR's with KDR.
All of these institutions (plus NLUJ, NLUD, and to a lesser extent NLIU and GNLU) have built enough of a brand for themselves with the legal industry. This brand was built on the backs of student recruits being able to churn out two/three years of back-breaking and soul-sucking work. It wasn't built on the outstanding academic literature being produced by the faculty members.
Therefore, my advice to all - current students in these places, and prospectives students who will pick one of them - would be to keep following the time tested rank order profile of NLS, NALSAR, NUJS, NLUD, NLUJ, GNLU, NLIU. You do this and you shall be fine.
And regarding low rates among NA and WE its a farce, they have the most racism against other counties. Even the concept of race originated from these regions. In offline world they have to put up with the farce of tolerance to avoid being canceled globally
Query- There is a property recieved through a will and same has gone in sale can the consideration amount for selling the property be directly transferred in another person bank account ( Account of Wife's or children of owner of property )
Ab sarcasm ka sign dikhana parega kya Sheldon ko?
2.I don't have the slightest feelings of attachment to "motherland." - The market rate is whatever JGLS charges it's students. So, please do us a favour and give back Karnataka's and Govt of India's money. Woh toh donate/return nahi karengi aap. Paisa ki baat aa jae toh sab hawabazi nikal jati hai.
3. "If we are to judge nations by similar yardsticks, then India too has its fair share of crimes on its plate" - GPT it and enlighten us which countries have been colonized and exploited in the same way British and French have exploited her colonies, by the Indian military in the last 500y. And if we go on talking about crimes, all militaries have committed crimes.
4. "Besides, it's not that the current-day French Army is actively colonising other nations." -
Har baat pe Tier 1 Tier 1 NLU likhne walo, googlaiya toh liya kijiye kam se kam.
Yeh kya hai - https://jacobin.com/2023/12/france-africa-empire-neocolonialism-domestic-far-right-repression-elites
5. "I don't get your triggered 'anti-SJW' comment about the US military," - I meant no matter how much we try to ape the west, our geopolitical situation is different from them. We cannot put our shield down and invoke DEI measures because we are in an extremely nuclear and hostile environment (unlike the USA which has sleepy Canada and Europe, which has a weak Russia). We have ruthless Pakistanis and Chinese on our throat, hence, we need to be extra vigilant, extra strict and extra battle ready at all times. Varna aapke Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah of NLS ka Drum baj jaega.
How did you not understand this line of argument?
6. "You too will most likely sell your soul to an exploitative law firm to make money." - Nowhere in my long comment have I mentioned that one should not sell their souls to anyone. Selling soul to a corporation which exploits loopholes in taxation, exploits natural resources and destroys livelihood of tribals is something, every "Do no evil" company of the world does.
Yaha pe baat specifically ek foreign military ke liye hathiyar uthane ki ho rahi hai because "I am bored, I need thrill and adventure." Most in their right minds won't do that.

Reading your replies, what I gather is for all answers, you somehow bring - Law firm, law firm into the picture. The world is extremely big than your Lala law firms. Baat ho rahi hai patriotism ki, military ki, AZB, CAM kaha se aa gya ispe? I thought har baat pe bina puche hue (no one asked you if you were in Tier 1, but, you specifically mentioned it), Tier 1 Tier 1 chillane wale, kam se kam argument toh accha dete.
Sawaal hai is CLAT tougher than JEE aapka reply hai Law firm Law firm. (Again this is not a question, this is an example of your non conjoined ulta pulta arguments).

As I earlier stated, don't do anything to help this country. Evade tax, enjoy. Exploit the loopholes. Help yourself. Be selfish. Just don't do anything which in anyway physically hurt people here.
Those who can't make it to these universities go for Jindal and get scholarship cut with their rank. Those who can't, go to Jindal. Simple as that.
A girl I knew told me Bhaiya I bought a scooty because I wanted to live. It had become difficult for me to ride shared autos. So much sexual harrassment at every point. I even wondered most days whether I will return back home. So, I forced my parents to buy me a scooty so that I can come to coaching. This girl is preparing for BPSC (Bihar State Services).
See, I could have not told you this story. And given gyan on how the Mauryas united India, how the National Emblem is of Ashoka, how he spread Dhamma etc. But, this reality is the truth of today's Bihar.
If this girl tells me, I want to emigrate to USA/Europe because India has failed me, I can understand. If she tells me I will never come back to India and I hate this nation, I can understand. Even if she says, there is an opening in US military and I need to get out of India and earn money even if means doing something against India's interest, I can understand. But, I am 100% sure, never in her head, this idiotic, dumb idea came that I will join the Military of some other country, because, "I am feeling bored and need adventure and thrill., that too living in a comparatively safer city of Bangalore in subsidised Govt. college."
This is my problem. This hatred and indifference which these woke NLU and Ashoka kids develop towards India.
If a labourer from Bihar, with no hopes of any job or help from the Bihar or the Central Govt would have said, I want to get a job in UAE army, I would have still understood. But, look at your societal position.

If such thought are entering your brain, there is something wrong with our education system. The world is a bigger place than your Law firms yar. Har baat pe Law Firm, Law firm. How much tunnel vision people develop I fail to understand.

In India, Part time PhD is only for people with an employment and a NOC from their employer, and it's clearly mentioned in the university website that it's a part time PhD. Full time PhD means no employment except TA or RA within the university. Also, most may be allowed to be asst. Prof if allowed by the university. The list of both part-time & fulltime is submitted to UGC. The reason why is primarily because part time PhDs are not entitled to stipend. Full time PhDs have a right to stipend especially from the university if they're not JRF qualified. That's why JNU pays 8k per month, whereas Tezpur University pays 40k, only to full-time PhDs.
Abroad, every PhD is a part time PhD, including online PhDs, which are not acceptable in India.
Lolz πππ
This is not to take away from anyone's achievement, to be a topper in top NLUs based on my experience you have to work really hard, especially for those Top 5 ranks.
In the same breath, toxic behaviour is not okay. But the words / terms like toxicity and mental health get thrown around soooooo loosely now, that when people who actually face genuine issues look like they're crying wolf.
Cry babies need to get their shit together.
So they basically want a quota in places like BITS Pilani, Manipal, ISB, Ashoka, Jindal, Symbiosis, SP Jain etc.
Two obvious questions here:
1. Is it constitutionally valid to impose such a quota?
2. If an SC/ST/OBC candidate enters ISB or Jindal through quota, he or she will still have to pay the fees. If such a candidate can afford to pay 50 lakhs as fee, can he or she be considered backward? π€

Another issue is, India lacks real freedom of speech. Anyone who finds any opinion offensive is always like "muh report to P0LiCΒ£." Blasphemy laws exist only in India and third-world crap countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen etc.
"A movie screening of the latest film Article 370 was arranged for 100+ students of NLIU, Bhopal on 24 March, 2024 at Cinepolis, Aashima Mall.
Mansarovar Global University Bhopal, and Cinepolis, Aashima Mall supported the initiative pro bono.
The movie showcases the story of the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution and the factors that necessitate the abrogation. (emphasis supplied)
The students enjoyed the movie and got to know the various legal intricacies involved in the entire procedure."
The post also mentions an alumnus's name who devised/supported the plan.
Was the screening compulsory to go to for some batch? What is Mansarovar Global University, why is it funding this for NLIU students instead of/apart from its own students? Why does the RW need to spread itself anymore, considering the BJP is certain to win after Ayodhya? Why is a private cinema theatre company financially supporting a move like this - are there more instances across the country? What does this say about the RW using student bodies/spaces for its nefarious ends? So many questions.
With this, I just want to start a conversation on the decline, not of NLUs but law.
Anyhow, not many people did full time PhDs. Not many do even today.
PS: the 6/7 odd people who did integrated LLM-PhD were definitely full time. And financially supported well by the institution. Sorry, forgot about them. In my head it was a separate program.
I dont know the lady who sent the email and its not me either. The fact that youd resort to that sort of juvenile nonsense tells me youre not worth engaging with.
Others in the firm, in an email in which no foul language was used. And yes it was unpleasant- but it was a LONG way off from being abusive.
The legal methods module is supposed to be some ersatz jurisprudence course but it really does a poor job at both teaching jurisprudence and at teaching methods. So you have second year students who cannot accurately tell you the ratio of olga tellis or what a grundnorm or core and penumbra mean. The course clearly had an ideological bent and did a disservice to positivist scholarship because of the teachers beliefs. I got a D in the course and I still came away believing ridiculous things about positivists and even more ridiculous things about natural law theories.
But what compounds that error is the failure through the years to not offer the jurisprudence course consistently enough by someone who isnt an idealogue, just a scholar.
SC's classes were the first time i had a not-lopsided fair representation of positivism - because we actually read HLA Hart and Joseph Raz. Overnight I changed my POV and his course saved me from the ignorance and knowledge bubble created by more left wing professors on campus who do not want to actually engage deeply with their opponents.
Rights talk is getting crazy in law school where anything anyone wants is a "right" . as if the government/ university/ increase authority here is some santa claus that exists to fulfil wishes instead of yknow- a people created institution that has to balance rights of several stakeholders who disagree. All of this can be headed off with basic jurisprudence course.
If you cannot bare minimum be a good compassionate person to people you saw everyday- you have no hope at all of being any kind of moral adult or any kind of political activist.
If you really think theres nothing objectionable about what you did here- go ahead and tell people in real life- tell your parents and aunts and uncles and tell your professors and tell superiors at internships about your disgusting post. Tell them you enjoy dragging the reputations of dead kids because it makes you feel taller. Have the inch of courage to write the defamatory comment in your own name. Coward.
Our entire industry is notoriously inefficient and low revenue generating - what makes you think the people who want associates to work 70+ hours a week for measly hourly pay (when converted - monthly pay/hours worked) will give them any such amenities as a firm policy?
There are some good partners who try and get their team members some stuff here and there, but nothing to really offset the misery of the intial years in law
Best option is to fall back on existing network - that means asking your college seniors who work in Gen Corp/ PE/ VC/ practice area you like - if their team is open to hiring new people. Youβll start as an A0 but they will get someone with 6 months experience.
Or track down B&F folks who have switched practice areas. Ask them how they are doing and see if they can recommend you somewhere.
mentally prepare to face multiple rejections but keep going.
Target Tier 2 firms as Tier 1 is more rigid about hiring folks from other practice areas. (although not impossible)/ target teams which do mix of B&F and Corp as they maybe more open to hiring you.
Lookout for all these Tier 1 partners who often breakaway and start their own boutique firms. They are looking out for people who want to work with them without the Tier 1 tag. Youβll get good exposure working there in a decent professional environment and they maybe be more open to hiring you.
Donβt end up in Capital Markets/ project finance just because you need a job. High chance that will make your mental health worse.
Most importantly- think outside the box - there are opportunities in various places, you just need to figure out where the market gap is.
All the best!
Yolo
Bro, ITC has been the highest payer since the last 2-3 years. I can 100% confirm that this year they offer 24 LPA to freshers from NLS and NUJS.
Academia - NALSAR.
Litigation/Judiciary - Both.
If you want to avoid a life of perpetual struggle for even basic opportunities during and after graduation, then take 3 CLAT attempts if necessary, but don't take admission in any new/lower-ranked NLU.
Likewise for the Muslim community there is Wakf Board that is also riddled with corruption in most states. It is an independent body in name only but funds are merrily siphoned off by Govt officers and ministers. Ideally the state should get out of regulating religion except its public order, morality and health implications.
