I said that it is not the CJI/Chancellor but his representative in the EC (SC judge who is Bengali or had spent good amount of time in Cal HC) who is tapped whenever the Chancellor has to take a decision. Chancellor is ceremonial as envisaged although s/he needn't be.

Closer to the ground it is the triumvirate of Cal HC judge, AG and an ex-Cal HC Judge who run the show. All are thick with NKC. So he is very well-protected as long as he delivers, which he has. Those deliverables mostly has little to do with what actually benefits students. This will continue in future as well unless the SJA is clear-headed and serious about its priorities.

It needs to take itself seriously before the admin treats it with any respect. Else it can continue to snooze or do some middling housekeeping en route to padding up CV.

I know of someone similarly placed as you, who came with a cop (uncle) to a leading tier-one law firm office which operated in the South Extension area (back in the day).

They arrived with hardly any prior notice and got this individual enrolled in the internship programme for that month right there, from that very date. To the credit of the partner overseeing the internship program at this leading tier-one firm (who is widely loved on this platform for being such a thorough professional), they did tell the candidate (after confirming them on the spot) to consider applying in advance going forward.

This candidate leveraged his police connections to the hilt (despite having mediocre credentials otherwise) and later went on to score a job at a law firm that, not long ago, was the go-to for a leading Venture Capital Fund. They even made partner at this law firm in record breaking time (before it went bust with all sorts of allegations). This venture capital firm made this individual their GC for quite some time as well.

This person that I am speaking of now funds startups and spams our LinkedIn with their "success mantras". There are many in this profession that are like this candidate. Some have police connections, some have IAS connections, some are related to clients that the firm can't afford to disappoint.. this list is endless.

To everyone else reading this, this is how things predominantly work in India. Accept it or Quit.

This is not a stupid question at all. A lot of legal principles, particularly in constitutional law, are necessarily overarching and subjective as framing objective criteria runs the risk of narrowing them down too much and tying them to the standards of one era.

The easy answer to your question is that the benchmark is the moral standards of society. As to what that entails, you will need to read case law and allied jurisprudence.

There is no "right" answer here. Buying books is like buying clothes or buying food- what works for someone else will not work for you.

Having said that, the only way to figure out is to try out various genres, and see what works for you. If a book doesn't appeal to you after an hour of reading, abandon it and move on. No one can like each and every book there is.

The answer also depends on how far along your reading journey you are.

Here are some suggestions- join Senior Reading Racoons on Facebook. It's a very active community, and they will give you ideas based on your previous reading options. If you're a new reader, mention that, and you'll get some great suggestions.

For non-fiction, I suggest you start reading the Saturday and Sunday editions of papers like ET, Mint and Guardian (online). There are short leisure and lifestyle articles there, and you'll slowly start to understand the kind of topics you like, and want to read more about (it could be history, econ, sports, travel, anything). After that, you can do a deep dive and buy some books.

This is incredible news! Last time you saw an NLU SBA setting apart placement rivalries and supporting another NLU SBA was in the pre-Covid 2010s. There was a wave of NLU student protests during that period, with almost 12 NLUs protesting against their VCs in a span of 3-4 years. One of the hallmarks of those protests was cross-NLU support, with each NLU SBA offering a letter of solidarity to the other. Unfortunately, several factors led to this phenomenon dying down, such as:

1. Covid

2. A new generation of students with a different mindset. Some students were more interested in fighting woke culture wars than fighting for administrative transparency.

3. NLSIU SBA selfishly dissociating itself from other NLUs, following Sudhir's reforms and the Karnataka HC judgement holding that only NLSIU is a national institution (which NLSIU alum ASG Vikramjit Banerjee had selfishly argued before the court).

4. Death of LI and change in attitude of BB. In those days, LI used to be a news site and BB used to be an honest and pro-student news site (unlike now, where BB has blacked out news of the NUJS student petition against the VC and news of corruption in other NLUs). LI and BB used to regularly publish campus news and take a pro-student perspective Different SBAs also leaked news to LI and BB, and there was a competition between LI and BB on who would get the scoop first! Sadly, this died when Kian quit this space.

So it's a welcome change seeing GNLU trying to revive the era of inter-NLU solidarity. But fingers crossed on whether this will stay. 🤞

Bits Law is any day better than Amity and as of today, JGLS is far ahead of BITS Law though most of the founding faculties including Dean at Bits Law are from JGLS. Bits Law will be another average college like many in Greater Noida started by big time media group if not properly managed and I think Ashish Bhardwaj can not beat CRK.

Please by all means go to NUJS (Despite the horrible management of Ph.D. candidates and extortion out of URF and JRF Fellows)

1. NUJS has a terrible and strictly-compliant 6-month Ph.D. duration where you're required to visit at least 5 times during this period. The submissions and the test also seem rigorous. There was even a cancellation of schedule that hecked us all. I should have spent at least over 1.2 lakhs on travel, accommodation, food and cancellation of my flights due to their mismanagement. They waste time during your coursework and keep online classes and expect you to sit offline to attend it (Facepalm).
2. NUJS, despite all bad and ugly, shines in its good part. Quality of Faculty in the field and availability of resources at disposal (incl. remote web access). The people you may get as your supervisor, you can 100% rely on their scholarship in the field. Mine is also in the same field and my supervisor is extremely good. I hear the same from people of same theme of law but with different supervisors. They know what they are doing.
3. Fees is 65k per annum (although IDK if they dutifully collect every year unlike NALSAR). Library access fee is 10k for 6 years and is refundable at the end of your completion. Free Grammarly that costs 11k/year. Extremely good online catalogue and supremely supportive library staff.

NALSAR has weird entrance tests (in google forms in 2023-24) but their evaluation is fair. Their entrance process is very rigorous and would not leave you without giving anxiety shocks. Further, if you are not selected but have a fair proposal, they allow you to present again (don't have to pay any or appear any exam) in the next year slot. I got at NALSAR and chose NUJS. Nevertheless, NALSAR is good, although I am unsure what the current faculty portfolio (along with their current supervisees) would accommodate in tech. There's prof. Sircar in tech (but he too is hardcore IP), but the seasoned tech/IP people have largely left. KVK Santhy mam is v.good but she's largely into cyber. NALSAR Ph.D. is a race you'll have to catch up after your mandatory and rigorous 15 days coursework. Some of my friends doing their Ph.D. with NALSAR have only forgotten about it currently, and it seems even the Uni may offbeat have forgotten about them in return (3 years, and no annual fee reminders).

GNLU (4k application fee though) is also a good place to do your Ph.D. and their testing process is also quite good. Even their coursework is well-organised, hasslefree and very channelised I heard. However, if your proposal is staunch on anti-state dissent in policy, action programmes, the likelihood of its selection is doubtful. I gave same script interviews, with same proposal on back-to-back days (yes, on back-to-back days) at NUJS and GNLU respectively, I was not even selected in the top 60 (30 selected and 30 waitlisted) in GNLU and secured top 10 at NUJS.

Both interviews were tough, grilling, very critical and of the high-quality panel; However, my placement contrast between the two institutions speaks a lot about being the shoe of the right fit.

I have seen a few posts every year seeking wardrobe guidance, and I hope this makes you feel more prepared for your first year at office. Some of the things may be obvious, some subject to your personal preferences, so, this is only a suggestive list, feel free to adapt it to your requirements and tastes. If you find certain rules ridiculous, they probably are, I cannot really do anything about it - I am only hoping to help you navigate the sartorial dilemmas.

I.GENERAL TIPS

1. As a junior associate, it is better to dress somewhat conservatively (business formals and casuals). If you are wondering whether a clothing item is appropriate for work, try and recall if you have seen others wear it at work. Strange point but do take cues from how your seniors dress - are they dressing conservatively or casually? If it is casual, don't copy it entirely (rules at workplace for juniors and seniors can vary a little) but perhaps choose a business casual pieces.

2. Take a couple of days to look at the clothes, accessories, and shoes and try them on. Try to do a fit check in the store before you buy, do you feel good in it? Is everything sitting well on your shape or is it uncomfortable? Try to combine your pieces and see what looks best - take pictures and save it on your phone for future reference It can be a bit time consuming to do this but it will get you ready in time on busy mornings.

3. Versatility: Mix and match your shirts, trousers, and ties to create multiple outfits. This maximizes your wardrobe’s potential without needing a large number of items.

4. Brands: In terms of brands, try to find which brands make clothes suited best for your body type and have good stitching for your budget. As a first year you want most value and quality for money.

5. Optional: Check out Pinterest for ideas on what to wear - if you are interested in developing your own sense of style.

Important: Please don't get intimidated by seniors or peers wearing expensive or telling you they are wearing a designer item. Your worth is determined by your work and personality, and not how much you spent on your clothes and shoes.

II. WOMEN

1. Suits: 1-2 Quality Suits: Opt for versatile colors like navy, charcoal, grey, or black. Ensure they are well-fitted; have them tailored if possible for the best fit. Whether you like skirts or trousers, feel free to adapt as per your preference. Fast fashion retailers like Zara, Mango, M&S, and HM make really cute coordinated sets these days, but feel free to go with more sustainable or cost effective options as per your budget and values.

a. If you prefer Indianwear, invest in nice (cotton/ linen/ silk) kurta sets and saris in colours you like wearing - to feel your best of course. The rule for necklines favours conservative styles.

2. Blouses and Tops: 4-5 Blouses/Tops: Choose colors like blue and white, but there is no hard rule, feel free to wear colors that look good on you. Ideally a white shirt/ blouse is perfect for most occasions and will last you a long time if you care well for it. But try to get some colors that are easy to match with various suits and trousers. You can always buy more later, if you want to.

a. Aim for:

i. 1-2 White Blouses: Perfect for any formal occasion.

ii. 2-3 Blue/Gray/Green/Pastel Blouses: Ideal for both formal and semi-formal settings.

iii. Optional: Add a light pink, grey, or pastel blouse for variety. Experiment with prints, stripes, plaid, and other patterns, but nothing too loud.

iv. Apply a similar rule for sweaters (good quality wool is fine).

3. Trousers and Skirts: 2-3 Pairs of Trousers or skirts, colors like navy, grey, and black will allow you to mix and match with your blouses and suits. Choose knee-length skirts in matching colors for a professional look.

4. Accessories:

OPTIONAL: Jewellery: Simple earrings (pearls, gold hoops, studs are great, if you love wearing slightly bigger styles - should be fine depending on your overall outfit and occasion), a watch, and/ or necklace/ bracelets (nothing that is something you’d wear to a party perhaps). Again, if you love jewellery and watches, feel free to experiment and style yourself.

III. MEN

1. Suit: 1-2 High-Quality Suits: Opt for versatile colors like navy, charcoal, grey, or black. These should be well-fitted; if possible, have them tailored to your physique for the best fit. Most retailers have the option of altering the clothes to fit you - best practice would be to try and see if you like the overall fit and then get it altered as needed.

2. Shirts: 4-5 Shirts, choose classic colors such as blue and white. These are easy to match with various suits and ties. There are multitudes of styles in terms of collars, stick to Oxford. Also try to get full sleeved shirts, I think law firms are chill about half sleeved shirts but it’s more on the casual side (best to see what your seniors are wearing).

a. Aim for:

i. 2-3 White Shirts: Perfect for any formal occasion.

ii. 2-3 Blue Shirts: Ideal for both formal and semi-formal settings.

iii. Optional: Add a light pink or grey shirt for variety.

3. Trousers: 2-3 Pairs of Dress Trousers: Select versatile colors like navy, grey, and black to mix and match with your shirts and suits. Make sure the hem of the pants is not pooling over your shoes. Good rule is that it should have a slight one crease when you stand with your shoes on.

4. Accessories:

IV.IMPORTANT: Fabric and Care:

a. Fabric Composition: Opt for cotton, linen, or blends for blouses as they are breathable and comfortable. Avoid polyester, especially in hot weather, as it retains odors. It’s best to check the label for composition, opt for less blended fabrics - you want your money’s worth here - even if you are looking at fast fashion.

b. Care Instructions: Follow the manufacturer’s care guidelines to extend the life of your clothes. Regularly iron blouses and suits, and consider dry cleaning suits periodically.

c. Tailoring: Whenever possible, have your clothes altered to fit, especially trousers and skirts.

d. Clothing Maintenance: Check the clothing label for recommendations on wash and care. Rule of thumb is cotton and linen can take higher temperature wash and ironing and synthetic fabrics can’t.

e. Store suits in garment bags and use good hangers - if possible. If you have time, brush them down after each wear and allow them to air out before storing.

f. Regularly wash and press your clothes. Stains should be washed as soon as possible. Ensure trousers and skirts are hung properly to avoid creases.

Either you can get over it — or you can't. Neither scenario should include gaslighting your own emotions, and life has to parallelly go on. So, if you feel such strong things that make you feel it's better to quit, then consider looking for other opportunities at similarly placed firms. If you start now by reaching out to your prior references & batchmates etc, you'll probably find a place in a few months — a lot of people would've given their notices for joining at a fresh firm by July. So, it's going to be fine, either way. Hold yourself together, and push forward. You can do this! :)

Okay, there are lots of amazing food places worth visiting with friends — I'll try to order them by distance.

If you're short on time - or want to take a short solo trip on an evening - go to Pista House for their biryani & paneer dishes. Elephant (North Indian) and Bits & Bytes (continental) are some other cheap options. Taaza has good (and dirt cheap) South Indian, Tandoor has decent Mughlai, and Alankrita has fancy/pricey cuisines.

If you have time, then take a Rapido auto to Kompally for some of the most reasonably priced great restaurants spanning from mandi (Barkaas etc), Buffalo Wild Wings, Asian (7 Sisters), and Ahoy & Thinespo (general) etc. Heart Cup Coffee is slightly expensive, but has excellent cocktails, too. [Always book all these in advance through Gold/One for the discounts!]

If you have even more time [or a larger group to divide cab expenses], then consider taking a trip to some pretty Sainikpuri cafes like This Is It & F3 for some fantastic continental food.

Alternatively, some other slightly farther places which can be conveniently accessed directly through the bus & metro are Padmaja near Sec'd station for dirt cheap & fulfilling vegetarian food, Grill-9 for the Shwarama & reasonably priced non-veg food, and the tonne of bars & restaurants near Begumpet Metro Station that pretty much have everything (North & South, Asian, Continental, Finger food etc) at every price point (Special mention: Fresh Cut, The Bar Project, Hashi & Conçu).

This turned out to be a pretty exhaustive list for places nearby, so I'm happy to claim that most other places nearby are passable (Special mention: Aranya for the costly & below average food!).

If I add anything further, it'll basically cover the whole city — which I'd strongly recommend you explore, for it is very much worth it. First, determine with your CA if you want to be governed by the old exemptions or the new ones. If the old ones, if you make above the exempted income slabs, first get your income below the same. e.g. PPF 1.5L/ year is exempt, a certain deduction for health insurance, NPS etc. After all that, if you have the bandwidth to study in detail the stock market, then go for small cap (if you can take risks) or PSUs (if you want a safer bet). If you dont have time to study stocks in depth, either go for index funds or go for mutual funds in particular sectors that you are optimistic about e.g. banks or energy or defence etc. Try and create an SIP for the mutual fund and invest a part separately in equity. There's no one fit solution for all. Depends on your income and appetite for risk.

So either attempt for as many of these as you can, or go for some other career. You're just barking up the wrong tree here, mate, trust me.

India Today has done an excellent analysis today on the electoral math in Bengal. Essentially, if the BJP gains 5% vote share, it can get as many as 31/42 seats, while even a 2% gain will give it a comfortable margin over the TMC. Survival in TNNLU is not a challenge at all. The university is conducting the exam to pass everyone. Vice Chancellor, who was rejected in NLUO and NLU Jabalpur, is spending his leisure time in TNNLU after retirement. He is not just interested in keeping everyone happy and enjoying retirement. The major issue with regards to English language is the already created heirarchy in schools. The schools that are in English medium are more expensive than others. This makes it a big issue because this congruate the fees of the school with the value of English language. At the end of the day, it is just a tool. An important one, but just a tool.

If only we had better primary education, these problems would not be as big as they seem to be today.

What call centers and BPOs are to tech and sales are LPOs to law. U don't have to do aything, just apply to them once u graduate and they would take a basic interview and ur in. Pay is decent as compared to litigation but no career growth trajectory. People can get laid off anytime or can be transferred to any project location anytime.In short, not good option if u looking for a quality career in law and ur hardworking or from a good law college.

From a Mumbai-based non-GLC college here. One of my batchmates (2020, 5-year course) met with an accident in 2021. He was travelling with a friend, the latter driving the vehicle. The vehicle dashed against a divider, the friend who was driving died on the spot. My batchmate was hospitalised for roughly a week, but could not make it. Campus, teachers, reputation alumni network wise SLS P is better. However, SLSN has the advantage of being in NCR. You get a lot more exposure, working practitioners teaching you specialized subjects, and the ability to intern after every semester and throughout your fourth and fifth year give you an edge in gaining experience. If you dont have a lot of family contacts but are sociable, SLSN can help you get alot of chances at getting to know alot more people. If you're planning to go into litigation, especially in Delhi, go for SLSN. If not, go for SLSP

B&F gets the most number as well as high profile transactions. The money is the best out of these three. The work load is also the worst, you're guaranteed to be losing sleep towards the end of every quarter, and it'll be hell in last three weeks of December and March.

Energy is really niche, the money is more than decent but very few good places in Tier - 1. Electricity is the dominant sub-area which has its fair share of practitioners. If you can get a hang of oil and natural gas sector, you can very well go in-house, including working in other jurisdictions.

IP is immensely fun work but the pay in India is poor, incuding in T-1s. There's no dearth of IP matters, they're just concentrated in a few firms. If you have a decent practice, you can keep getting onto the meaty matters. If you have a patent background, it'll be easier to work in other jurisdictions. Otherwise, your best bet would be to go in-house if you want to move out of India.

No, they don't. Last year (2023) Ikigai only offered one PPO. They have given around a dozen "assessment" internships this year, but zero offers. The hiring decisions are made by partners and at Ikigai as an intern you don't even get to work with them. The HR fools interns and wastes months of their time in the name of callbacks and assessment internships (which are not the same at Ikigai).

Trilegal and Spice Route hire many freshers each year in their tech teams - much better places to intern IMO.
