The idea that people learn anything in law school is a joke. Alumni is the most important metric given the state of legal education in India and by that standard I would recommend NLS, NALSAR, and NUJS over the rest of them. I have worked closely with some NLU J grads and would choose grads from the other three without a doubt.

As a former student of PIL, I would say it's best suited only for research, academia or thinktanks. And these would require a postgraduate degree and a PhD. Moreover since the scope is very wide, i would ask to specialise in one area of International Law, and not just in PIL. Currently, international environment law and international trade law are the best bet. Moreover, once you've done your PhD and have a good academic record, plus atleast 3-4 publications, and a minimum 5 year teaching or research experience and good recommendations, then only can you think about working abroad. One way is to try and get into CILS in JNU. JNU, by name has a lot of connections abroad and therefore you can leverage it to your advantage. Otherwise find a professor that has connections abroad and try to get in touch with them. PIL is interesting, however not a career oriented subject. Better prepare for IFS instead.

I have almost 2 months before I enter a tier 1 Nlu. I really wanna go through the courses they teach in the 1st sem atleast. Can I get the reading materials online .. if yes, please recommend sites etc.

nah, your experience there is strictly based on how much YOU want to work. If you ask for work, the associates have a shit ton of work to give you. Initially they'll start by giving you case briefs, and if they like your work, they'll give you drafting work. Yes, you have to be in court till 4, sometimes even later. Once you reach office though, you are sure to get work. I'm assuming if somebody joins his office then they already know about the fucked up work hours and if you're willing to stay till late at night then it is a very fruitful internship imo

my suggestion is to use quantitative metric to compare the aspect that is most dear to you, what works for me in recruitment to tier 1 and nothings else

solely on that basis, nujs has been able to place double the number of aspirants per year for the last ten years than nluj, so my choice is cleear. it is difficult to completely wipe that kind of track record in 5 years

if you want to go for ifra etc. nluj wins (compare the money that they have spent)

First understand how the magic circle firms hiring process works. Second understand in which country you want to join. LLM degrees have good weightage in UK and USA.

Get into colleges like Harvard, Oxford or Cambridge. Scholarship is added bonus. (How to get in? Do your own bit of research).

During your tenure do internships. Traineeships/apprenticeship are great way to gain some experience as in USA in order to sit for the bar, you need to have some experience in practicing their laws.

This is only the process. How you make the best of your opportunities is on you.

Why are you only trying in Tier 1 assessment internships? You can apply for assessment internships in tier 2,3 boutique firms as well. Why do you expect them to consider you coming from a mediocre law school when you yourself are not even giving a chance to non- tier 1 law firms. There are hundreds of law firms in this country, just open your mind a little bit. Stop being obsessed with tier 1 law firms please they hardly take 60-70 freshers in a year and you already know how many people graduate law every year

Given the present T-1 payscales for A0s, it is very easy for someone working in NCR / Bangalore to reach 1 Cr networth in 5 years of work.

Obviously, this is assuming the person keeps their lifestyle in check for the first 4-5 years i.e., avoids buying a fancy car (> 10L), stays in a decent place (rent < 20-25k) and avoids foreign vacations.

This is also assuming that the person does not have significant financial liabilities (> 20k a month) i.e., towards education loan, family, health, etc.

By the time you have 10 PQE, you'll earn about a crore in most T1 firms. With 15 PQE, you can expect around 2-2.5 crores and with 20 PQE 3.5-4 crores is the minimum you'll earn. So even if you are very average, by the end of your career expect to earn 5-6 crores easily. Rainmaking equity partners make 8-10 crores by the end of their career easily.

I think your question is can someone without clientele become a partner. Yes, absolutely they can.

Logic: A PA3 could get offer for partnership from T2 / T1 law firms. His EP would not want him to leave so he would offer partnership.

Some firms also have targets - bill enough and become a partner. Lots of partners IK do not gave connections / contacts/ clientele.

Having said that, you should also look out for building connections & networking - not from requirement standpoint but growth.

Is its just me or even others feel that HNLU Raipur deserves the 'ComeBackKid' Award ! It seems to have resurfaced from deep trenches of maladministration, mediocracy and gloom. Resurfaced, and yet to gain heights, but atleast showing good signs of recovery. There are constant events happening at the University, visits of SC and High Court judges, Alumns getting involved in a lot of initiatives, frankly even the students sound more confident and positive when they come to intern at my office.

During my time, the vast majority of people did not care about politics unless you happened to be on the fringes of the spectrum. Most of your opinions should be fine, but you may get ostracized if you speak too much against affirmative action.

Most top NLU kids are centrist liberals who generally don't yap a lot about politics unless something significant comes up. Then there's a small but very vocal left-wing group which never fails to make a lot of noise. Similarly, right-wing Sanghi groups exist, although they tend to tone down their controversial opinions. Libertarians are a rarity - it is a foreign ideology in Indian context, thus many are completely unaware of what it is.

However, you will definitely find a few in every single batch. It was fun occasionally wearing a Gadsden flag t-shirt on campus, as on multiple occasions I was asked about it by those who actually know what the symbol stands for.

I have read on multiple posts that IP teams are paid lesser than most teams in law firms. In some cases, I have seen the same people who handle IP handle TMT as well, because TMT invariably has IP elements to it. Is the pay scale for TMT teams better or the same as IP teams? Also, if these teams are in fact paid lesser than other teams in firms, is it the difference too big to ignore?

Can a member/partner of a TMT team ever be as significant or as big of fee earner as a partner in say GC/M&A?

Also, does beginning a career in and focusing on TMT limit ones options to move to any other roles in the future, could this be dangerous given that TMT generally seems to be handled by a smaller number of people?

UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Singapore. Don't consider U.S. unless you specifically know you don't wanna work there and unless you are sure that you are ready to take a second LLM, because that's what they'll want.

Other than that, Germany, Switzerland may also not be all that bad.

That aside, the key problem is that the TMC government has ruined NUJS over the past 15 years (as they have ruined other institutions in the state). They gave full autonomy to Madhava Menon, BS Chimni and MP Singh, who recruited good professors and invited the country’s top luminaries to the NUJS governing body. As for the future, I don’t see the TMC losing in the 2026 elections. They start with a default 35% head start in vote count, because the Muslim vote bank has shifted en masse from the Left-Congress to the TMC.

As somebody who has lived abroad for about four years now, here's what I think the writer of that 'life abroad is tough' comment means:

1. She has to do her own cooking, cleaning, dishwashing and laundry for herself.

2. She has to clean her backsides with toilet paper - genuinely, my sympathies for that, BTW, it is disgusting and hard to adjust to on a visseral level.

3. She has to work her butts off and continually prove herself, because other countries' academic setups have accountability systems with consequences, unlike our own. Also, there are caveats to the thinking that people won't have to struggle with as much admin as in India. You do have to struggle with silly uni admin, and, if you are living in the UK, lots more besides (UK folks will know what I mean).

4. She has to deal with the prospects of changing visa policies and immigration rules, because these are constantly kept under review by the host country's government. She went in hot, thinking there was no need to be adaptable and ever think about the fact that the host country, even if it was welcoming initially, may not remain welcoming. Essentially, she felt she'd get red carpet treatment and never feel the need to argue for why she is not indispensable.

5. Again, she came in hot, not anticipating some of the natural factors abroad. For example, cold. That does make your life hard.

6. She is trying to speak to the genuine reality that job markets - even overseas - are tough now. As an example, constant hawkishness by the UK government over immigration in recent times has meant declining international student enrolment. The consequence that this has had for people in the UK - including pre-existing international students and university graduates (recent postdocs, for example) - is that universities are making layoffs to compensate for the loss in international student tuition fees and yet balance the books.

7. All the above has to be managed with a high cost of living, the price for all the good things the west gives you.

Why is the tone of my response a mixture of contemptuousness and politeness? Contempt because the way this has been worded is extraordinarily irresponsible. This seems like a discouragement to look abroad for opportunities, when a more thoughtful way of writing that would have been that your expectations need to be realistic, especially remember that there are always tradeoffs in life. Polite because life abroad can be hard, and there's no use denying that - so it's a good point, as far as it goes, but not very far. It is the non-elaboration that angers me most, because it seems to have been designed to discourage.

I made the life-changing decision to go abroad, with the hope that I might be able to live and settle abroad in the long-term. Did I have an expectation that it has to work out? Not necessarily, because that ain't how life works. But my experience of studying, working and living abroad has, overall, been a great one. Even if it doesn't result in long-term living there, that's okay. I would obviously be sad, but I wouldn't change a thing about it.

Does doing a PhD from a private university, not Jindal or Symbiosis, affect my chances in securing an academic job ?

I'm practicing in the district court, and I thought about doing a part time PhD to shift into academia later on. However, I do not have the time or energy to crack the top law schools, it's competitive as F.

So I planned on doing one from a nearby private university. How much detrimental would that be ?

So, everyone is passionate about tier 1s, however obviously not everyone is going to get it. Some of us are just not that smart or hardworking enough, including me.
