I got a rank in early 200s which will comfortably give me both NUJS and NLU J- I am confused since NUJS has a legacy of being in top3 (I am very attached to that tag) but currently NLUJ is making great strides. I want to make an informed decision being cognisant of the fact that I will graduate in 2030.

NLUJ, because:

1. NUJS has been hollowed out by political mishandling. The admin are corrupt and nothing happens properly. Academic standards in the drain, scandals rocking the institution year after year... no, not a good place anymore. Good faculty there are a legacy of a past age.

2. NLUJ will give you single rooms in hostels from an early stage.

3. In most countries, law is a subject best studied in a big city (especially if you wanna be a practicing lawyer), but you really won't get any major advantage out of studying in Kolkata which you couldn't make up for while doing internships in big cities during your university vacations.

At the risk of being downvoted by my fellow noojies, I personally saw the consistent degradation in student quality between my seniors, peers, and juniors during my time at NUJS. The university's become a joke when it comes to academic quality. Horrible infrastructure, downright abysmal professor quality (the new ones, the old stalwarts are still excellent), the SJA has lost any power or authority to bring actual change.

Choose NUJS if you want an easy 5 years where you can do jackshit and hope to get a job because of your alumni's better times, choose NLUJ for a law school.

The idea that people learn anything in law school is a joke. Alumni is the most important metric given the state of legal education in India and by that standard I would recommend NLS, NALSAR, and NUJS over the rest of them. I have worked closely with some NLU J grads and would choose grads from the other three without a doubt.

NLUJ will give you better infra for sure and relatively better access to Delhi and its courts. NUJS despite its problems still has better quality faculty, especially those left from its glory days, and research culture. Student life at NUJS will be a lot more chill and Kolkata provides a more diverse environment for sure. Alumni connect-wise, NUJS will be a little ahead, though NLUJ have done great too in that front. Recruitment-wise, both are great when it comes to Indian law firms. NLUJ has apparently better success with foreign firms lately, though I'm not sure about the stats. NUJS grads certainly opt for a wider range of careers including academics and policy work, besides law firms. I don't think you will regret either decision at the end of five years.

Honestly NLUJ is doing better in every aspect currently. They have on par corporate placements, better foreign placements, good LLM prospects, great faculty and a vibrant campus life.

The admin and faculty in NUJS has declined significantly over the last 3 years. Our domestic placements are at risk due to incompetent recruitment cell bodies with no strides in foreign placements and even fewer LLM admissions.

Mooting achievements are going worse every year and so is debating. The only area where NUJS might be doing better is ADR competitions but NLUJ isn't behind either.

Faculties are increasingly horrible with most good professors having left. Every subject has innumerable components and despite that the marks awarded suck.

The only reason why you could maybe choose NUJS is if you want a chiller academic and campus life where you can enjoy four years and be okay with an average rank and CV, ultimately getting placed somewhere mediocre. That also is no longer a guarantee the way placements have been in the last 2 years.

I know a girl who chose NLUJ. She visited NUJS and found the hostel terrible, so she chose NLUJ.

That aside, the key problem is that the TMC government has ruined NUJS over the past 15 years (as they have ruined other institutions in the state). I don’t blame the students and disagree with the above comments. If you have bad leadership, students anywhere will become lazy and woke, even at NLSIU. The students inherently are bright. They just lack guidance.

Jyoti Basu was a London-educated barrister and Buddhadev Bhattacharya was an intellectual and very honest man. They gave full autonomy to Madhava Menon, BS Chimni and MP Singh, who recruited good professors and invited the country’s top luminaries to the NUJS governing body. In contrast, Mamata Banerjee and her ministers are as corrupt as they uncouth and uneducated, and you can see this reflected in the quality of leadership and governing body invitees at NUJS today.

As for the future, I don’t see the TMC losing in the 2026 elections. They start with a default 35% head start in vote count, because the Muslim vote bank has shifted en masse from the Left-Congress to the TMC.

Thus, choose NLUJ.

Glad to see that NUJS students and alumni have now finally accepted the truth. No longer living in denial. This is the first step towards improving the college.

The next step will have to be twofold:

1. Approach the courts against misgovernance. The SC rather than the Cal HC, which is useless. Also, file an intervention petition in the NLSIU national status case pending before the SC, since it affects NUJS too.

2. Simultaneously, go on a protest and immediately seek the resignation of NKC and the appointment of a new VC. His tenure is over and his extension is illegal.

my suggestion is to use quantitative metric to compare the aspect that is most dear to you, what works for me in recruitment to tier 1 and nothings else

solely on that basis, nujs has been able to place double the number of aspirants per year for the last ten years than nluj, so my choice is cleear. it is difficult to completely wipe that kind of track record in 5 years

if you want to go for ifra etc. nluj wins (compare the money that they have spent)
