As far as I understand, the culture is not toxic (in terms of personal insults etc.) and the work provides a good learning experience. Is it because everyone feels that they are not valued? Have people who quit joined better teams and felt success there?

NLUJ will give you better infra for sure and relatively better access to Delhi and its courts. NUJS despite its problems still has better quality faculty, especially those left from its glory days, and research culture. Student life at NUJS will be a lot more chill and Kolkata provides a more diverse environment for sure. Alumni connect-wise, NUJS will be a little ahead, though NLUJ have done great too in that front. Recruitment-wise, both are great when it comes to Indian law firms. NLUJ has apparently better success with foreign firms lately, though I'm not sure about the stats. NUJS grads certainly opt for a wider range of careers including academics and policy work, besides law firms. I don't think you will regret either decision at the end of five years.

The finding in All India Judges Association v. Union of India [2025] GCtR 1064 (SC) also says that "All the High Courts and the State Governments in the country shall amend the relevant service Rules to the effect that the quota of reservation for LDCE for promotion from the cadre of Civil Judge (Senior Division) to the Higher Judicial Service is increased to 25%".

It also says that "All the High Courts and the State Governments in the country shall amend the relevant service rules to the effect that candidates desirous of appearing in the examination for the post of Civil Judge (Junior Division) must have practiced for a minimum period of 3 years to be eligible for the said examination. To fulfill the said requirement, the Rules shall mandate that the candidate produces a certificate to that effect duly certified either by the Principal Judicial Officer of that Court or by an advocate of that Court having a minimum standing of 10 years duly endorsed by the Principal Judicial Officer of such a District or a Principal Judicial Officer at such a station." (page no. 60)

Freshly out of 12th, I've always been after corporate law, but having a breakdown in the middle of CLAT 2025 has resulted in an atrocious rank and mark, ending any prospects I may have had with the 5 year BALLB at a government college. I have a whole lot of career paths planned, however I understand that I'm being really naive, and just need a little support in choosing what to do now:

Option 1 : BA (Hons.) + 3 Year LLB from NLSIU

* The BA is a new program started by NLSIU, and honestly the only reason I'm looking towards it is because of the connections I can gather from the NLSIU outreach as well as an increased chance of me doing a 3 year LLB from there as well, as a few seats for the program will be kept for students who've graduated from the BA (Hons.) program.

* Do a qualification like the CS or CFA during both my degrees at a good pace, intern like hell during the LLB, and then basically kiss all the asses I need to in order to secure a PPO in the 6 years I will be in college.

* Risky, but unfortunately one of the few I have.

Option 2: Drop/ Partial Drop, try CLAT again

* dont need to delve into this years CLAT fiasco, and I dont really prefer this because I'm afraid of it happening once more.

* If i score well, all good. if not, i go to a reputed private uni's BA LLB (ahem Christ) and basically just start a year behind.
* Or combine this path with option 1, make it so that I can do a partial drop while studying the BA from NLS, and if CLAT 2026 goes to shit, I have option 1 to fall back on.

I want to build my life in India, but I dont want to close any doors which may allow me to practice in the UK in the future.

Havent been able to sleep most nights, petrified by the irregularity of my future when compared to my peers.

Go for it. Lower your budget and pick up a model with higher depreciation. Keep 3-4L for preventive maintenance (timing chain, turbo etc.) at a great garage. The annual maintenance is not as scary as people say it is. You get a vastly superior car than buying a Creta new.

PS.. I own a second hand German for two years now. Zero regrets.

At the risk of being downvoted by my fellow noojies, I personally saw the consistent degradation in student quality between my seniors, peers, and juniors during my time at NUJS. The university's become a joke when it comes to academic quality. Horrible infrastructure, downright abysmal professor quality (the new ones, the old stalwarts are still excellent), the SJA has lost any power or authority to bring actual change.

Choose NUJS if you want an easy 5 years where you can do jackshit and hope to get a job because of your alumni's better times, choose NLUJ for a law school.

No. Experience in corporate law firm does not count. But one can easily find a way to get the certificate of practice endorsed by principal civil judge, if practicing in a district court or in case of practicing at HC, by an advocate of atleast 10 years of standing at bar. And without to court you can be eligible for the examination and will also clear mains. But the panel will definitely catch you with your balls when you'll be unable to answer their questions which would be solely based on practical experience of courts.

T2 to T1 isn’t particularly hard but switching to a B&F role in Bangalore is tough considering such role or team does not exist in Bangalore at even a fraction of the numbers it does in Mumbai.

If you aren’t in the B&F team it depends on the value of your team and partner if it is still t2 then switching is not hard. If you’re referring to Wadia or some firm of that nature not known at all for gen corp/ transactions then well that isn’t a t2 for you it’s t4 and it’s a different story.

NLUJ, because:

1. NUJS has been hollowed out by political mishandling. The admin are corrupt and nothing happens properly. Academic standards in the drain, scandals rocking the institution year after year... no, not a good place anymore. Good faculty there are a legacy of a past age.

2. NLUJ will give you single rooms in hostels from an early stage.

3. In most countries, law is a subject best studied in a big city (especially if you wanna be a practicing lawyer), but you really won't get any major advantage out of studying in Kolkata which you couldn't make up for while doing internships in big cities during your university vacations.

I just hate my batchmates and don’t keep in touch with them. I was unlucky to be in a batch full of fake, toxic people. My college years weren’t memorable at all. I have managed to make some new friends (non-lawyers) after graduating. But it’s still very hard to make new friends, especially for introverted people. I’ve met people who wish to get married simply to cure boredom lol.

I would say political volunteering. If you meet someone at a political internship or even a rally, you are already of the same ideology. This is a huge deal, because these days friendships break easily because of political differences. In fact, Swara Bhaskar met her husband at an anti-CAA rally.

So instead of ranting against the BJP on Insta, just show up at your local Congress office and offer to volunteer.

Concerning the Supreme Court's ruling today that 3 year practice as advocates be necessary for those appearing for judiciary, I wanted to know if law firm experience (including those other than in disputes teams) would count towards the same, since we would also clear the AIBE & enrol with the respective State Bar Councils. If anyone could shed light on this - thanks in advance :)

It is already happening, with the greater integration of technology and forensic sciences with legal education. That's the future. Humanities students generally forget that science and math wire the brain in a way that makes science students 'smarter' - more relevant, and future-ready.

I’ve already tried cold emailing HRs, messaging partners and associates on LinkedIn, and applying through official career pages — but haven’t had much luck so far.

Would really appreciate any tips or suggestions from anyone who’s managed to break in from a similar background. What worked for you? Anything specific that helped you stand out?

I mean in favour of civil liberties, free markets and limited government. Against welfarism and identity politics. Oppose both the arrest of the Ashoka University professor and the case against Nupur Sharma. Support privatisation. Oppose corruption. How common is this ideology in NLUs?

I certainly don’t expect to be greeted with open arms, but as long as I am not ostracised like conservatives, I am fine with it.

Hi OP, small correction - it isn't the job of a corp lawyer to not let matters go to court. Rather, it is to specifically draft agreements in a language that when natters inevitably go to court, their client have a stronger hand. Moots and ADR give them exposure on what may happen in a court and thus how they can avoid common fallacies in agreements. e.g. On something as simple as a jurisdiction and dispute resolution clause, I've seen freshers be confused as to what works well for their client and what may lead to dead ends.

1 - single rooms are rare due to space crunch. if needed due to medical reasons you can get
2 - Basics. Lights, fans, table, chair, bed, cupboard, balcony (4th and 5th year), wifi, Split AC, Heater

3 - everyone keeps a kettle, induction, iron etc. Split AC and Heater is already installed in each room, why would you install a cooler?

Its true. Just look at the parking lots of T1 lawfirms in Mumbai. PAs usually buy semi-luxury cars like Jeep Compass (top model), Skoda Superb, Volkswagen Tiguan. Junior partners are buying entry level luxury cars like Audi Q3, Mercedes CLA/GLC, BMW X3/3 Series with Equity partners keeping X5s, i7s, GLE/GLS, RR Velar/Sports for themselves. There are senior partners buying top end Range Rovers, Bentleys, Porsche/Ferraris and G-Wagons' as well. This shows the kind of luxury lifestyle that is catching up in the lives of corporate lawyers.

I disagree. ADR and Moots not only help people with picking up transferrable skills like analytical thinking, knowing how to approach a problem, working in a team etc., but also show that the person is determined enough dedicate a portion of their law school to a single thing, which is why just participation in moots like Vis opens more doors than you can imagine. It’s a great way for recruiters to sift candidates. Other than that, moots are great way to showcase that you know the basics of a practice areaq. They also help people pick up soft skills like networking. So, yea doing the right moots and ADR comps is fairly imp in law school

Sure it is. With that logic, why do lawyers need to have studied science or economics in school either? Those are also useless for us. The point of moots is not to make you a great corporate lawyer, it’s to help refine the way you think about issues. You can get by just fine without ever having mooted, but all the top law schools have good mooting records via their students. And it definitely adds social capital within and outside of law school.

I would argue that there's not a lot that can really act as a distinction for one to pick and choose between law students. If anything, at the very least ADR helps one in building one's negotiating vocabulary. It also builds connections so one should give it a try for sure. Agree completely about moots though!

I am interested to know this. Did Sudhir outline or ever go into specifics regarding what exactly he hates about CLAT? His mate from Oxford, Shamnad Basheer, once made fun of it in a public lecture he gave which I attended. But he, too, did not go into specifics.

Clarification: The question is not meant to convey that CLAT is a good exam. There is a lot to hate about CLAT (it's just a low quality exam), I am just curious to know what particular thing(s) about it one of India's foremost academic lawyers wouldn't like.

I think that this perspective has a lot going for it. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's about 95% (or more) right.

At the same time, such activities can help with skill-building and honing of important skills required to be a commercial lawyer, such as teamwork, presentation, coming up with creative solutions and working under pressure. True, ADR and moots are not the only (or even the best) way to build those skills, but they are one way to do that. Therefore, I'd change your headline to 'ADR and moots are not the most useful things aspiring corporate lawyers can be doing, but they aren't entirely useless either'.

Yes 1000% and anyone who says no has never met a serious JEE aspirant in their life (or is completely delusional). At the end of the day CLAT is a basic exam that doesn't require in depth knowledge of anything. Compared to JEE which is vast and has tons of technical concepts with rigorous testing. Matter of fact, many students who do well in CLAT and reach top 5 NLUs are folks who failed to clear engineering exams.

I am not deriding CLAT aspirants or toppers; they are great students and brilliant individuals. That being said, when it comes to clearing an exam, JEE aspirants will blow them out of the water and it won't be a close race.

As one of the youngest in my Nalsar class, I thought I was winning some kind of race but the emotional immaturity is a disadvantage and everyone loses those years at some point in their career - illness, career switches, time off for family, something comes up for each person. Just focus on your present and remember it'll all even out between everyone in the next 20 years and this won't matter at all.
