Entering 4th year, still unclear about which practice area i should pick a career in - have worked in M&A, capmarks, competition, financiaal regulatory - and like all of them equally (no really, they are all perfectly equal preferences in my mind). I think I like work that involves shares, company structure and regulatory side of things - would be great if someone could share tips on the factors that i should consider in picking a practice area and the flexibility to shift laterally among the above areas

The manipulative part is to move the price of the underlying in one direction, building a bigger bet in the opposite direction using options, and unwinding your move in the underlying (i.e., resulting in a move in the opposite direction) so that your bigger sized options bet pays off.

Now the market for the underlying is relatively less liquid and therefore it is easy to move/influence its price, if you have big money. At the same time you are also building a bigger bet in the opposite direction in the options market which is a much more liquid market than the market for the underlying itself. Honest answer: the success rates for alumni (even the older 1990s/2000s batches) is not perfect.

I have observed this at the alumni reunions. It's always just a handful of the same succesful alumni at the head of all initiatives (senior advocate/HC judge/equity partner etc). But when asks about batchmates one realises that many (not insignificant minority) have really stagnated - as middling managers at in house companies, some even left the law after 5-10y PQE and started small businesses.

They seem to just live for their kids hoping they get settled quickly, and don't seem excited at all for the last decade of their professional lives.

Other than those from privileged backgrounds and those who were strivers in college (moots, internships) who succeeded either at the bar or at T1s, the others all seem disappointed and embarassed to even come to alumni events. Many are making so with their nuclear families in 3BHK (upper or even middle) middle class apartment complexes.

Some are evidently in debt - from failed ventures or even those that took home loans and couldn't succeed at corporate careers after a point and thus a significant portion of their income goes into EMIs. Their kids go to upper middle class schools (which are not even easily affordable for this strata of alumni, not even getting started on kids' college fees).

I'm not saying all this to be cynical, but an honest reality about the ideas of success we all presume with the T1 NLUs.

I'm sure Nalsar/Nujs batches also have a similar ratio, if one looks closely and honestly.

I’m assuming your rank is not good (but depends on your grade scale). If you’re in the 20’s, try to increase your rank to at least top 20 this really matters a lot.

Please actively start applying yo places via partners. Don’t just use the same mail everywhere, personalise it, show them you care about theur work but don’t grovel- there’s a fine line in between.

Give internships your best, but most importantly choose the right teams. Talk to people who’ve worked/ interned witht the firm/ practice area, see if they’re hiring etc. GC Cap Markets team hire a lot, disputes teams usually hire lesser. Please don’t be scared to try newer practice areas, yoy’re j in your 4th year- GC and capital markets everyone can do - so give it a shot.

Schedule internships wisely. If ythe firm has a one internship policy - Dec Jan to April of 4th year is the best time to intern. If it has a call back system, so yhe first internship in 4th year sem 1, and try to get your call back scheduled in March of 4th year. This is the peak hiring /ppo interview season.

Give internships your best. Be the first person to show up, do your work diligently, show them you’re ready to go the extra mile. Be friendly with them. Don’t underestimate any internship, you never know who might be hiring. If not, be sure to ask for references.

In your free time, keep working on publications. They don’t really matter a lot at this stage, but its always good to have them. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine just kee going at it. All the best!

You're making valid points but are mixing two things. As far as OP's issue of work is concerned, till last day, you can't say no to work. Yes, proper succession should be planned but unless you're a student or a fresher, you would know that it would definitely be incorporated, since no one can predict if a matter is going to be stretched. Only the extra ordinary lean teams can't manage this, which would be bad on their part. The notice period should be shorter and past bonuses must be paid, no doubt about it and these things need to change. Now a days, stretched bonuses have become retention tools.

I suspect you don't actually work on GST to say that room for interpretation is too low in GST. There are way too may open issues which would still need to be litigated. And you're incorrect if you think all cases would be argued by small time practitioners in GSTAT. Actually, all cases would be argued by experienced IDT practitioners, since we don't have GST jurisprudence and in the initial period, it would take good skill to ensure that the positions taken on the basis of interpretation and past indirect tax jurisprudence is sustained. Once everything settles down, like in any area of law, small timers would handle small matters and major issues would be handled by specialists.

I want to register with Delhi bar council and join my job at a law firm simultaneously. Most probably I will appear for AIBE in Nov/Dec 2025 and the final COP will be issued around March 2026. Post that I want to transfer my registration to Bar Council of UP to practice in my home town. I have a few doubts about the above situation:

1. Is it worth/necessary to take transfer from one state bar council to another to practice law independently in a particular state without a local counsel?

2. What is the process to apply for a transfer?

3. How much time does it take to complete the transfer process and get the COP reissued from the BCI?

4. Can I join state Bar Associations without taking a transfer?

Hi, my junior took a day off stating his brother was unwell and admitted in hospital for dengue. I encouraged him to take as many days as he wants, as I was being supportive. Later I got to know he was modeling with an agency, on a photo shoot that same day. What should I do ? I have clear evidence of this.

Like many others in my situation, I wasn't looking for placements or internships. What I wanted was the brand. GLC, Mumbai — the name, the legacy, the alumni network. That’s what drew me in.

But here’s what I’ve been reading and hearing from students and recent alumni:

1. 1. A principal who is allegedly inaccessible and unresponsive
2. 2. Administrative disarray bordering on incompetence
3. 3. No structured academic calendar
4. 4. No real guidance or support from the faculty
5. 5. Delayed results year after year
6. 6. Infrastructure that's falling apart
7. 7. Rigid and outdated attendance rules with no empathy for working professionals
8. 8. Visible institutional decline — academically and operationally
9. 9. A lack of inclusivity, with clear signs of nativism creeping in

For someone juggling a demanding job and serious academic intent, this is more than discouraging — it's appalling. The more I dig, the more it feels like GLC survives on inertia, not intent.

So I’m now seriously reconsidering. KCLC or NLC may not have the historic branding, but they appear to have more structure, more responsiveness, and frankly, more respect for students' time and circumstances.

It’s not between conservatives and wokes. It’s between Bhakts and non-Bhakts. That is the problem. I hate the Congress and INDIA Alliance parties. I hate socialism and reservation, support privatisation and meritocracy. But I am not a Bhakt. People like me are thus also cancelled by the present government. In any cases, Modi is practising socialism on steroids at the moment.

Sad that Gen Z kids don’t know anything about the old LI and Kian. How Kian highlighted corruption across several NLUs and got VCs thrown out through student protests. VCs literally used to shake in their boots if Kian called then. I have seen this first hand, because I was in the office of a VC when Kian called him in the context of a student protest.

Look at the state of affairs now. Gen Z kids are big ▮▮▮ who are too afraid to protest, while LI is a dead site.
