My concern isn’t just about being passed over; it's that many of those being selected ahead of me often haven’t done any substantial or relevant internships. In several cases, it’s just an internship with an NCLT lawyer or a small local firm in Jaipur, followed by a sudden leap into a tier-1 internship at firms like SAM. That trajectory understandably raises questions about the criteria being used. Someone asked how I know I’ve demonstrated consistent effort, it's because I’ve been interning consecutively during off months, sometimes three to four months in a row. That’s far from common practice, even among students from tier-1 colleges. I also want to be clear, this isn’t about looking down on students from non-NLUs. I’ve always respected them, fully aware of the relentless work it takes to break into the corporate sector, especially when only about 2 out of every 100 law graduates make it there. My frustration lies not with individuals but with a system that often overlooks sustained effort and merit in favor of less transparent factors.

People will now say that this dude is being elitist and whatnot but honestly, you’re one hundred per cent right. 90% of people at tier-1 law firms aren’t from tier-1 or even tier-2 NLUs. Law firms would rather have these tier 3 kids who won’t leave than someone from a top university.

Approach the HR preferably GM, or CJ (acronyms: take a look at linkedin) they are very helpful and approachable. Be honest about it and give a good reason for not filling it up (health issue, occupied in internship work) and write an polite email for the same. Mostly, they'll give you your stipend. This happened to me many years ago. It is too late but next time make sure you have a signed offer letter (on paper) with a partner signing. Ask your RCC. Mine allowed me to enter recruitment late. Then the firm panicked and called me and I told them I will withdraw from interviews with other firms if I get a signed offer letter from them and I got one.

Google is your friend. Alternately reach out to seniors. If that’s not possible reach out to a number of recently admitted folk on LinkedIn. People are usually happy to pay it forward and give you advice. Forums like this are not usually the place. And you don’t know the person giving advice and the person giving advice has no incentive to be very thorough or helpful because they don’t know if you’re a first year who is day dreaming and wasting their time or if you’re actually serious. They also won’t be able to tailor advice to your profile.

I understand that it is a norm to disparage lawyers who are active on LinkedIn - it would be helpful if the tide shifted to assessing the quality of their posts, rather than just the quantity.

I haven't spoken with Guracaran in a few months, but I have known him since before law school, through law school, while he was at CAM, and after he started his outfit. It's a small outfit with ambitions to grow and do good work. I have seen Gurcaran take on a wide variety of work, and his legal acumen is sound and continues to grow. Super at networking, management, and client service - skills that many Indian lawyers desperately need to develop.

This is not at Gurcaran's request, and I would understand if people assume it is/ or typed by him - I do not care. However, it's not enjoyable to witness unnecessary commentary from people who haven't worked with the individual, and I felt obliged to speak out.

To the original poster - as I said, it's no CAM and is a small outfit, but an ex-CAM SA runs it. If you want to work at a small place, consider interning and giving it a shot - no other way to figure out the mettle of a new, small firm.

Thanks for your advice. I can't opt for BSc LLB or Btech LLb because it just simply isn't offered in the college I'm getting. Even if that was the case, I wouldn't have chosen them as they both require tremendous efforts alone and would've distracted me from the law subjects.

Who stopped you from getting those courses exactly? There are hundreds of opportunities available on the Internet, including free ones. It isn't someone else's fault that you went for something looking for something else! Many of the expert IP lawyers in the country don't have a science background, it isn't stopping them from being good at their job.

Performance on an entrance exam nearly half a decade ago is no indicator of current academic prowess or professional skill.

You claim to have "demonstrated sustained effort to grow in this field" and yet, are unaware of the simple fact that the legal profession, like most other professions operates primarily on ones skills, experience & willingness to learn and NOT only on the pedigree of the college they study in.

Most of the best lawyers in this country (corporate and litigation) did not attend NLUs and have managed to do extremely well for themselves.

You do not know what kind of experience or skills these other candidates possess and you'd be better off not trying to make improper assumptions when the fact of the matter is that there are a LOT of students out there who manage to get relevant work experience, build meaningful relationships, AND secure top ranks in their college. The fact that you have not been able to do the same is not a shortcoming on their end but on yours.

While it is certainly alright to vent out frustrations, misplacing your anger in those who managed to secure limited, coveted internship spots is neither helpful not healthy.

Instead, try to improve your batch rank, and ensure that you show up to your next internship with a better and more humble attitude than the one you have put on display here.

The legal industry is all about CONNECTIONS and if you do somehow make it to a T1 firm, you might most likely find yourself in a situation where your colleagues/SAs/PAs/Partners or even Senior Partners belong to one of these so called "Tier 3 institutes" like Symbi or Christ. I'd hate to see you get humbled in a much more humiliating and public manner in such a situation.

I interned at Trilegal Delhi during April 2025. I have heard a lot on LI that callbacks are particularly easy to bag at Trilegal. However, when I asked HR about status of my callback, I was told my feedback was not good enough to grant one.

The idea that you can swap a BA for a BBA or BSc and produce better lawyers is one of the worst takes I have seen here (and I have seen many, from 18-25 year old kids).

The purpose of a law school is not to prepare everyone for a corporate law career. The purpose of a law school is to do just that- teach you the law, and then you decide whether to go into litigation, policy, journalism, academia, or into a corporate law career. The humanities are an integral component of this, because they give you a solid base from which you can pursue multiple options. If you get a BBA or a BSc, you are already limiting your options.

Are you for real? Let's assume for a second that you don't think law school is meant to produce litigators, journalists and commentators, academicians or policy professionals. Let's assume you only want to focus on crypto and "complex, technocratic finance".

Tomorrow, the government will release a draft framework and ask for comments. Or maybe you will get invited to a conference for your thoughts on the new law.

But you don't know how to critically analyze laws, beyond a very superficial level. You haven't studied Marx, and his theories of how laws favour the powerful and entrenched. You haven't studied Romila Thapar, so you don't know how to push back against conventional wisdom. You haven't studied Ambedkar (lol), so you don't know how legal systems are built to accommodate conflicting interests. Eventually, no one wants to listen to you, because you sound like a 22 year old.

That's still OK. As and when it goes to court, and some annoying left wing intellectuals oppose great corporate expansion plans by citing Marx and Ambedkar, you can always hire a senior counsel to counter their positions on Marx and Ambedkar.

Oops. The senior counsels have studied BBA LLB, and have no clue what the other side is talking about. They don't understand why it's a bad thing to use eminent domain, displace people, pay them "fair compensation", and mine rare earths.

That's also OK. You've studied BBA and BSc. You're now an expert in Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Human Capital, PR and Crisis Management, and Economics (back to Marx again). If you did BSc, you now know Physics, Maths and Chemistry. You can combine your knowledge of Thermodynamics and Advanced Algebra with Law, to become a better lawyer.

But you've studied Accounting! Maybe you can replace PWC, because why do you need auditors when you have a lawyer with a BBA? You've studied maths, so you know how to solve cryptographic puzzles and mine your own crypto. You excitedly go to all the top crypto lawyers, but all of them have a BA LLB, understand crypto very well, and are not interested in your technical details.

Thankfully, all the top law colleges in this country don't feel the need to fix what has worked very well so far. Go ahead and downvote this all you want, but come back to this comment in 10 years, and lets talk.

Doing everything in one's power to elbow a person out of an organisation because a self-proclaimed "senior" partner felt threatened. Taking away all shared resources from a senior colleague who is hospitalised after s/he challenged the entrenched and absolutely incompetent "senior" partner. Writing petty, nasty and extremely personal comments on a work group (WA) on a Saturday because the "senior" partner made a fool of himself before the client who directly called him asking for an update. Constantly berating team members because he feels like it and he can. Not every firm that parades as a tier 1 tech law practice is doing actual fintech. The real work - RBI heavy, commercially grounded, deal-tested - sits with the legacy Tier 1s. The rest? Mostly glorified MSAs dressed as fintech mandates.

Behind the LinkedIn polish, it’s chaos. Partners play brand manager, SAs sit confused, and juniors are left chasing research prompts on issues no one even understands. Mood swings substitute strategy. Screaming replaces clarity.

You’re not building a fintech team by micromanaging doc formatting and hovering over track changes. And definitely not by flirting your way through team dinners.

I’d take Rajdeep’s views with a pinch of salt, as his wife is a TMC MP and Rajdeep is known to be pro-opposition. Also, there is absolutely nothing to suggest that Dhankar and Modi disagree on the NJAC. In fact, Dhankar has been blasting the judiciary.

I'll be entering into my third year of law school soon. Plan to join into corporate law but I've only done disputes internships as of yet. What are some ways in which I can enhance my knowledge on the commercial side of law? By that I mean knowing abt the business side of areas like M&A, PE/VC, Securities etc. I do read stuff uploaded on the Dealstreet of Bar and Bench, but I feel like that isn't enough. Any newspapers/websites/courses/blogs that could help me out in this?

These demarcations are indeed firm specific. TMT is a super wide umbrella that probably encompasses as much variety in practice as a term as "Corporate" would at this point.

Some places have a FinTech focused practice which would resemble a Banking & Finance team more. Some places have a GenCorp team with a TMT advisory tagged on that work mostly on transactions, consulting specifically on the tech side. Some are focused on Telecom mandates, which is its own can of worms. IP is generally separated from TMT at this point, but some firms still include it with some teams focusing fully on IP.

In terms of gaining experience, it depends on where you want to end up. If your aim is to master this specific domain, joining a fully advisory practice like Trilegal is probably your best shot. If you want to gain more varied experience and have the option to switch to another parallel vertical later on, joining something like SAM or CAM is a better idea.

For any future students, please do not EVER TRUST the offers of one firm, especially JSA . Always keep trying elsewhere everytime. And NEVER miss out on college placements even if u have an offer at hand.

A lot of firms go awol with students if they already have a prior relationship with your college. Considering you are from a top uni there is a good chance they have a prior relationship with your college. Reach out to your college rcc, and ask them to handle it from there. if they are still awol, raise it with your rcc faculty head. Usually even in the worst case scenarios they usually respond with this escalation. If not raise it with your mentor/buddy and then loop your partner in (I am assuming that the above scenario only deals with hr)

If you have kids there, they will be racially bullied throughout their school life. Wake up 'O Great Aspirer. This isn't the 1990s or early 2000s when Indians were considered model immigrants. There is a massive anti India sentiment in the west right now. Just ask anyone living in Canada, Australia or even the US right now.

Firstly, your intent must change. I never met any person who got published at "prestigious places" because they wanted to be spruce up CV. Write quality with originality with the intent to advance scholarship first, and rest second. It will by itself get published at the best places.

Here’s the correct answer. AI will take over those legal fields where there is order, discipline and standardisation, which is true for most commercial law subjects. AI will struggle to take over those legal fields whether there is disorder, indiscipline and no standardisation, which is subjects like property law, criminal law etc. So the unglamorous subjects presently practised by lowly TLC grads will actually be the ones that will survive. The NLU grads working at CAM and SAM will be fretting and become jobless.

So to AI-proof your career, join an old-school litigation chamber and practise old-school subjects. No money in the first 10 years, but you’ll make it up later.

I am a 2024 graduate completing 1 year at an in-house position. Wlb is great but the learning curve has been pretty slow and not the most fulfilling.
