I want to switch back to a inhouse or law firm job (corporate and commercial transactions profile) but I'm feeling very lost where to start. Can someone please guide? I am 26 years old and a law graduate (3-year LL.B.). Right now, I am doing litigation at the Punjab & Haryana High Court, Chandigarh. I am writing here because this feels like the only platform where I can honestly say what I am going through.

The main issue is with me as a person. I was never a very serious person in life. I take things casually, I procrastinate a lot, I am often late, and I don’t take warnings or responsibilities as seriously as I should. Even now, this habit is affecting my career.

Academically, I first completed PCM and then did B.Tech because I thought that was my interest. Later, I realized I was more interested in politics and law, so I went on to complete my LL.B. from CLC. It has been about a year since I finished my degree.

I had some good internships, and I believe I have decent knowledge of law and a good understanding of the basics. I usually know what the law requires and what arguments should be made. But when it comes to actual work, I don’t feel serious or driven. My senior gives me work, but I am very slow in research and drafting. Even when I understand the issue, my output is not up to the mark.

Office life also feels very monotonous. There are hardly any juniors. Mostly it’s just me, and another junior who comes only once or twice a week. There is very little interaction or discussion, and that makes the work feel even more dull. I don’t know whether I don’t like litigation or whether I just lack discipline and seriousness.

Financially also, I am not earning much right now. Still, I don’t push myself to work harder or improve my speed. Instead, I end up wasting time on my phone, scrolling reels, and avoiding work. After that, I feel guilty, but the cycle repeats.

Another big concern is family responsibility. Soon, my family may depend more on me, and logically I understand that I should be serious about my career. But even after knowing this, I don’t feel that sense of urgency from inside. That scares me.

When I look at my friends and batchmates, many of them are very serious about their careers. They are constantly discussing cases, law, opportunities, and growth. I don’t feel that same drive, and I don’t understand why.

So I want honest perspectives:

- Is this kind of phase common in the early years of litigation?

- Do people become serious with time and experience, or is this a personality flaw?

- How can someone build discipline when motivation is missing?

- How do you know if you genuinely don’t like litigation, or if you are just struggling with work ethic?

I am not looking for sympathy. I just want to understand whether this is something others have faced, and how they dealt with it.

I fully support legalising suicide and the sale of cyanide pills. It is better to be gone than live with diseases like Alzheimer's, terminal cancer , or failing health in old ▮▮▮. It's painful and humiliating. ESPECIALLY in India, where we pay tons of taxes but don't receive quality healthcare and palliative care, be it in the private or public sector. For Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa, I filled an online application and got enrolled in some 15-20 days. My law school was in Maharashtra but even outside Maharashtra graduates had the same process and timelines.

Just enroll in a Bar Council where your law school was, or an efficient one like BCMG.

It is correct that bashing the team here is not the solution. That said, idea is for the team management and managers to take note and do something about how the team is being run. If ranting of associates on these forums or feedback which is being provided by them directly to each manager is not warning enough, atleast take the attrition rate in this team as the warning.

Incompetence at any level is a reflection of incompetence of hiring managers and their inability to teach. No one learns merely because they are "willing to put in hours". Such a millennial thing to say. Solution lies in simple things on part of managers i.e., be less condescending, be more humble, take out time to explain (and yes different people learn at different pace so be little patient), invest in each associate and identify each associate's strength and weakness and work with them on those (rather than setting them up for failure from the beginning). In the end it will only help the managers to pass on some work stress if they manage to train some juniors well. If not then feel free to continue working like a execution partner since you are happy to work in a "PE" team doing "volume heavy" "decent work".

What can we expect when the current Faculty Director was given a complete monopoly after the exit of the most hard-working and longest serving Assistant Faculty Director of the society. To add, the entire MCS now ▮▮▮. The FD and the remaining Assistant FDs always seem to witch-hunt students (including past achievers, board members or newbies) -▮▮▮. At least under the leadership of the ex-Assistant Faculty Director (SM) and his courage to hold the FD accountable, things were more transparent (if not perfect). More generally, it is surprising that faculty are being given this much monopoly over the MCS, when the new ED promised to make all JGLS societies student-led with only minimum faculty involvement to facilitate approvals and finance planning.

There is a growing incompetence at the mid-level in the team. Bashing the team on this forum is not the solution- the members actually need to see how much work they are putting in for a team which is PE, volume heavy.

The team does decent work. Nothing very high level. Nothing very complicated and if the juniors are not able to keep up that means their quality is truly questionable

The team is actually a brilliant place to learn. If you're willing to put in hours and use your mind on some days at least

He does not read, yes... I don't know what prep he does the morning of, but he is an effective lawyer; has been since before most of us were born. You talk of 370, ED, Umar Khalid, or the SIR cases as if his arguments will change anything. As anyone who's read the Umar Khalid judgment will know, most of these judgments on contentious political issues are bereft of legal reasoning. The SC has been politicised and at this point, KS, AMS are the only ones from the old bastion whose voices cannot be silenced by the Bench... for now.

You need to understand that becoming a partner is becoming increasingly difficult, unless you have some insane strings or are really good at BD. Most firms are already top heavy, so they are not really incentivised to make someone a partner.

Moving to in-house part- here is the tricky thing. Moving to in-house is possible if you are doing EVERYTHING in IP. As in Prosecution + litigation + contracts + transaction and now they want someone who is also aware of IT compliances. It is difficult to find a team which does everything since law firms are based on the model of specialisations. That said, there are positions solely for prosecution, but they are very limited. and prosecution is a very very routine work.

Remuneration part - No, partners are involved only for IP compliance part. that is not an integeral part of any deal. Relax kid.

Hi, i am in KCO Noida. there are two teams which sit in the noida office. both the teams have hired a bunch of people very very recently. if PPO is the only reason you are looking to intern. would not recommend coming to KCO. you can try with NL's team, since you are in 4th year and by the time you graduate they might have a vacancy. alternatively, some people from bombay teams do sit in noida office. so you can reach out to them for work to increase your chances of working in KCO.

I would seriously advise you to consider joining a good litigation chambers in Delhi, many of them have started paying 30-40k to freshers, esp if you are from a good NLU. Even if you aren't, the chances of you getting into a litigation chambers in final year is much higher than getting into a firm.

Leverage your T1 internships, esp if it's in disputes team.

This particular issue has nothing to do with politics. Yes, there is a lot of politics and the recent saffronisation of Jindal has made the left/liberal profs unhappy, but this issue is separate. NLUD provide fellowship only to one scholar, i.e. who is the topper in the merit list. NLUO provides stipend to all scholars at 30K and 10% increase every year. So I'd choose NLUO over NLUD anyday. If you're comparing LLB and LLM clat ranks for a PhD program, you seem to be stupid AF. Fellowships matter more than perceived "tiers".

The noise about Bangladeshi and Rohingya voters is overdone by the middle classes and elites. Yes, there are many Bangladeshis and Rohingyas who have illegally acquired voter ID cards, but not as many as we think — certainly not enough to swing an election. It’s just that they tend to stand out more in an urban, elite, upper caste environment, because of their traditional dress, appearance and accent (skullcap, beard, lungi, dark complexion, non-Sanksritised Bengali etc). You can do freelancing when you have some credible work experience.

Lets say you work in a MNC for a couple of years as a lawyer - Adani/ICICI/HCLTech/TCS or a Tier 1/2 law firm. You can show your future clients that you have some credible work experience which can be transferred in the freelance role (Contracts/Compliance/M&A)

Most folks who work in litigation and put profiles on fiver or up work because of some law sikho course end up getting very few work.
