BCI has a clear rule that not more than 6 months of credit can be transferred back to any law degree, so the max time that one may spend in US is 2.5 years, how do they get credit for extra 6 months in the US (as surely Cornell will not allow for Indian law degree to be counted)?

We had a colleague who wasn’t considered to be very promising at work plus he came across as arrogant, hot headed and over-smart. His image in the firm was tainted for many other reasons apart from work and they tried to get rid of him before he eventually left on his own for a more lucrative job overseas. Now he is working with a big client of the firm, at a very good position and the same partners who hated him line up to meet him. He apparently hasn’t changed but his circumstances have and his haters are now chasing him ;)

I am a millennial and have faced boomer bosses. My current one gives me silent treatment on any given day. He only has one favourite person in the entire team of 25-30 people. While everyone has to suffer to his horrible communication and people skills I face the worse of this personality because I have zero diplomacy and don’t know how to massage fragile egos. define great internships. If you already have interned at T1 firms in your preferred practice area then work your ass off to get a callback and convert it into a PPO. Sure there is a lot of factors that go into PPOs that you can't control. But whatever is in your control, at least nail that. If you do not have T1 internships, then the truth is your internships may be great but T1 HR does not give a f. All they see is (in that order - institution + grades, past internships - they basically want prior T1 experience in the same practice area, or at least 2-3 boutique and t2/t3 stints, publications, moots, certifications are good to have. Some firms like NDA or S&R value publications more, for others I don't think they are going to break or make it.) And even if you end it at a T3 is it possible to make lateral moves into T1, but you have have to network smart and be very good at what you do so that people actually want to hire you. A lot of people do it. For lateral hiring there are also consultants like Vahura who may be able to help you out.

Join HNLU this year. But don't get too comfortable - stay hungry and give your 100% in CLAT next year. I am sure you would make it if you prepare well. It is going to be worth it trust me there is huge disparity in the doors it can open for you. Worst case scenario, you are still at HNLU and won't lose anything the preparation would only help improve your reading and analytical skills which would help in in law school anyways. So give it a try 100%. All the best :)

As a HNLU graduate, I'll tell you this - we have a solid alumni base but you really have to put yourself out there and be lucky to get some help from them. There isn't the same sense of institutional affiliation and pride as is otherwise the case with certain other NLUs - case in point, GNLU. Placements at HNLU aren't great, and you've got to push yourself and make sure you have a great, all-round CV, with good communication skills. Also, don't assume that Naya Raipur has great weather, its hot. The only reprieve is in the November to January phase. In any case, that shouldn't be a major criterion for you to decide between universities. I don't have connections at WBNUJS but if your research reveals that that would give you a greater shot at placements, I'd suggest you pick that.

The market is down bad right now. There is always an excess in supply of fourth and fifth year law students to choose from as fresher hires but that can't be said about those with quality PQE (atleast 2-3 years). You've just got to be lucky enough to get into a decent firm that has a known presence in the market.

Not really. The practioners will tell you even the advanced of legal tech tools fail to even generate the first cut of things very often. My team has hired one extra fresher for 2026 - don't know the rationale but I can say it's not the end of A0s and A1s. College kids be fear mongering nowadays.

What I have seen with new partners overloading a team of new associates is lack of communication is mostly with respect to deliverables. You can’t expect a team of freshers to take up a deal end to end. You need to define the scope of work for them atleast in the first 6-7 months before they can jump into matters independently.

Currently working with someone who is considered to be a great lawyer in his practice area, but I have never seen anyone more evil than him. Not only is he evil but he supports only those who are like him or become like him eventually. He has brought my career to a standstill almost simply because my juniors consider me as a very good mentor. I am a good person and a great mentor according to my juniors and others in the firm. But as per him i am not respected or taken seriously since my juniors are not fearful of me. according to him I can never succeed if I don’t become like him even though he agrees I am sincere hardworking and know my stuff. So basically it’s not enough to be sincere hardworking and great at your work unless you are an asshole too????

It's so goddammit funny to see someone trying to make the universities in their own country far more superior and then ignoring certain facts.

How many students from top NLUs get placed? 3-5 students in each of these schools. Meanwhile jgls, which was also my option for law, Has limited information regarding where their graduates are working and from what we know most of em are working in top Indian law firms, but becoming a solicitor after job experience and LLM foundations.

Also, the MC and SC put emphasis highly on recruiting those who have been to UK universities (who are providing) LLM, LLB, MLAW, etc) because of these university's connections through their MoUs.

Another factor yall are avoiding is that these law firms prefer those who have done UK LLB more than who has done LLB or BA/BBA LLB.

Also don't lose hope as long as you have a good job experience, win a few moot court competitions, mentor who have connections and can give reference for you at a firm, multiple vacation schemes (IMPORTANT) and the biggest and the most important factor of all...PASS YOUR SQE EXAM FOR GOD SAKE. If you want a training contract, its better if you pass SQE 1 exam in you 3rd year of LLB or 4th year of BALLB and do your QWE for SQE during training contract (including internships, clinical work or vacation schemes).

Also if get an opportunity to do vacation schemes at an MC or SC, make sure to perform your best with your experience and NETWORK for future reference, it's said you have done well in your VC then you will get a TC at the same law firm. However, it's recommended to do it in your 3rd year of 5 year program or 2nd year of LLB as you may have gained better experience from your past interships to help you during VC.

Harvey and Legora (as well as Juris/Lucio/August) are all part of the first wave of legal AI. They're supposed to simplify processes and not replace them. One associate can do a lot more work now, so a team can either scale up its total output with the same manpower or (more frequently) meet its current output with lesser manpower.

The second wave of legal AI is going to be more interesting, as the latest models have developed agentic and long horizon capabilities that can lend themselves to easily replacing the work of an A0/A1. That's yet to come though.

You are wrong, I have been in those classes from the exact same JGLS profs.....they certainly don't present arguments from "multiple sides". All they do is come and rant for 2-3 hours from their extreme left point of view. And rather than my friend", it is they who "stiffle discussion and conversations" by downgrading "multiple sides" and being aggressive/fascist towards them.

Lectures are usually hours long discussion where multiple sides of arguments are presented. Imagine a Professor discussing the nuances behind Marital Rape laws? Wouldn't the professor, in an earnest discussion, try to present and showcase multiple sides of the argument? All of the caveats and considerations are being taken into account when discussing this concept. Can you imagine how many lines will be spoken in that 2-3 hour-long discussion, which can be carried out of context to just incite the mob? Moroever imagine your residence being in a small town in Haryana like JGLS is. JGLS has multiple liberal arts courses and subjects on offer. I can only imagine the abuse the professors will have to face if clips of their lectures is posted without any bit of respect to the context. You, my friend, will stiffle discussion and conversations with your short sightedness.

I am an upcoming A0 in a T1 law firm (got from Day Z) hence, I am unaware about the AI-integration in such T1/T2 firms. I have heard that T1s have adopted crazy AI models like Harvey and Legora so I am assuming in name of cost-cutting, lot of Associates may have been asked to pack their bags and eventually take fewer freshers.

I want people who have tea on what is the current situation. Has AI taken away firm jobs? (Seeing lesser hires every year nowadays as well)

AFAIK CS50 courses start with teaching you about very low level coding languages and will slowly build up on how to use AI to automate your coding related tasks. Don't think it will help you much in vibe coding. Maybe try using lovable if you want you only try your hand on vibe coding

There are two sides to every story. I am not doubting your ill treatment. What is important is for you to seriously question yourself if the behaviour is truly toxic or some of it is overhyped in your own mind. Many of us even at this old age cannot handle a simple admonishment. When you are younger, you are more reactionary. But if you can calm yourself for a moment, assess things objectively and then find that the environment is toxic and not simply tough, walk away with grace.

Make sure you do not commit the same mistake when you lead a team. When you are approaching partnership, its easy to fall into the trap of revenue pressures, trying to overload a team with new associates to keep costs low and snapping frequently because work quality drops. Finding the balance, mentoring your colleagues and leading with emotional maturity is a tricky task which takes time to develop. As will you.

I try my best to do all this but often do fail. All I can say is, introspect as much as possible and then come to what is a balanced and good decision for you and how you develop as a person/leader in the future. Its the only way we can change the frequent toxicity we find in this profession. Not by running away from it.

It’s high time lawyers realise that karma exists even in the legal profession and simply because you have authority or power that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you please. Devils luck is not available to everyone. Kindness, righteousness, compassion and ethics is above everything else. What goes around comes around and karma never fails no matter how influential or powerful you are in the organisation. If not in professional life, karma will hit you in your personal life which will be even more worse. Karma passes on to the next generation. Whenever I deal with my peers and juniors I remind myself that one day my daughter will also join the workforce and/or face the society and she shouldn’t be paying for my misdeeds.

HNLU is still ahead of NLUO, especially because of its VC and better alumni network. NUJS NRI quota is fine if you can afford it. BSc LLB students are facing some issue with being away from the campus and paucity of hostel room. The classes should shift to the main campus by the time you join, hopefully. However, it is a new programme, so hasn't made a name for itself yet unlike the BA LLB.

I am sure this partner and her team have made you a villain within their firm instead of introspection. Such people never realise their mistakes and play victim card. I have been in a similar situation where the partners who made life hell for me reached out saying let bygones be bygones. I never tried to avenge myself but they kept digging their own grave by delivering poor quality work.

NKK pays around 60-80k for starters. This is second hand information. Someone who has first-hand info may confirm.

Now as far as institutional bias is concerned, let's be real it's there everywhere (Firms, Chambers, In house, Think tank or wherever you go). And I do not blame them, because using the institutional reputation as a proxy for judging competence is a low effort and somewhat reliable way for employers. The truth is on an average (I'm not talking about outliers) NLU folks are likely to do better than non-NLU folks.

However, being someone who was getting into an NLU outside of the top 10, but chose to stick to NON-NLU for convenience and financial reasons; in my first year of college I realised that rather than pointing fingers at the system, you should focus on finding a way around it. Even If I think that the NLU vs. NON NLU bias is unfair, it is still going to be there.

However, the most important thing to understand is just because it exists does not mean that you cannot offset it. I know people from non-NLUs (like Private Unis in Maharashtra or ALS Delhi) and were 1st gen, but are still working in chambers of the top Sr Advs in SCs. One of them did a clerkship. The other did his LLM from abroad (does not necessarily mean that you must also do clerkship / LLM. But I'm just saying that people have done this and you need to make a considered decision based on your circumstances).

Other than that, I would say a lot people go deep down the rabbit hole trying to have items on their CV which they 'think' would look impressive or boost their profile (Internships, Moots, Publication, Certifications and what not). Sure, a good CV is a valuable asset to have and in some cases might help you get your foot in the door. But focus on improving your actual skills and competence.

As harsh as it may sound it is easy for me to say “Oh! I am as competent as they are – I just could not get into these places because I’m not from an NLU” However, it requires a certain degree of self-awareness to realise the discomforting truth that all I have been doing in law school is using ChatGPT and PPTs to somehow pass or even ace the exam but I am not gaining any real knowledge. If I am given a niche research question, I would probably not be confident navigating through it without AI. A 6000 page file with voluminous evidence and a big fat case compendium, would probably scare tf out of me.

Do the work, and get progressively better at it. Whatever area you are interested in, have deep subject matter knowledge about it. Have great speaking and writing skills. Even if you somehow manage to get you foot in places like these if you can’t do these three things it would be difficult for you to sustain. Give the world irrefutable proof of your competency and ability so that none can ever use your college as an excuse to question your competence

I think it was Carl Jung who said that “No matter how isolated you are and how lonely you feel, if you do your work truly and conscientiously, unknown allies will come and seek you”. Sorry I my message was harsh or if I went off topic; built I only intended to send a message to all the NON-NLU folks folks. Don't kill your ambition; work towards it. Never feel disappointed that you’re not in an NLU. Comparing NLUD to GNLU or NLUJ is laughable. Where is NLUJ’s Rhodes? Where are GNLU’s regular foreign vac schemes? Both of them are much older too, mind you. Don’t waste time arguing just because you couldn’t crack the AILET and could never get the ticket to NLUD, NLUD is literally the only true NLU left in this country without some domicile reservation and massive batch size. As far as graduate outcomes go, it’s hands down superior to every NLU except the older 3 and that too only in respect of corporate placements. And the faculty is still superior to every NLU except NLS. Maybe you’ve forgotten that the NLUJ and NALSAR VCs are still permanent faculty members of NLUD.

I feel bad for Gen Z. An entire generation whose brains have been poisoned by online toxicity, be it from the right or the left. Nepo kids traditionally went to GLC or abroad. Now they go to Jindal or abroad. But the big change is that the children of NLSIU alumni are the new generation of nepo kids. They are studying alongside children of the old guard senior counsels and law firm owners. Thus, the present nepo generation is twice as large as the older one. Once the children of other NLU alumni turn 18, the nepo generation will probably be 10 times as large! They will all graduate from IB schools with very different mindsets as their middle-class parents (who too will become upper class elites).

The other day I met an NLSIU alum who said he will advise his son not to even sit for CLAT and instead do a dual BALLB-JD from Jindal and the US. I’ve even met NLSIU alumni from reserved category backgrounds being snooty and saying they want their kids to study abroad, rather than with “common” children (words to that effect). Twenty years from now, thousands of NLU alumni will be thinking like this.

I can’t help but wonder if this will impact recruitments down the line? Children of NLU alumni will obviously get preference in recruitments. So will we be in a situation where all recruits are graduates of foreign universities or Jindal? And maybe international law firms may even prefer foreign grads over Indian ones?

I was working there till recently and here's what it is:

- the place has has a tremendous culture historically and the impact and results still show, albeit much lower than earlier. This is the good part

- some teams have really nice seniors like corp team which flows a sense of calmness

- senior folks are here as retirement homes and hence their hunger to get in more work and do more work is limited. This hurts at times because lower work and hence more non billables

- compensation, firm management etc is decided solely by the old man, no matter what they keep saying. They made a couple of senior folks incharge but he took back decision making the min he didn't like something. So that's à battle you can't win - and everyone will agree with you on this internally but still nothing will change.

- the tax hit is pretty real.

So while the culture is good (which is what you'll hear of a lot from others) , the money on paper is good (not the post tax stuff) - there are enough red flags which you should consider - most important being lack of transparency and fairness which starts pinching more and more as you get even slightly senior.

A recent hiring post by NN for Associate roles drew attention for its unconventional entry requirement, an essay on “Piracy of the Public Domain”, coupled with the applicant’s understanding of technology law and law’s interaction with society.

Conceptually, the approach is sound but i have heard reports of nearly 1,600 applications and his post is silent on timelines or shortlisting criteria.

More troubling was the disclosure that an individual allegedly advertised essay-writing services for INR 12,000 on a freelancing platform.

With all these things, how likely is a 0PQE even competing with 3PQE? What are the alternatives that exist?

One suggestion- please make sure to give her some work in the beginning with unreasonable deadlines, uneconomical quotes for the sake of “relationship”, hell- give her urgent work on Friday evening, which is due Monday morning. Basically, make her life extremely difficult before you dump her. That way you can als justify to your management (should they ask why was xyz dumped).

International opportunities in Dubai and Singapore after 3 years of experience / SA level without doing an LL.M or writing a foreign bar exam. Probably have to get recognition for good work on deals which open up referrals to lateral abroad.

London / US opportunities need at least LL.M. and a whole lot of luck. Not sure if solely working with recruiters helps move into these markets.

Easiest to lateral into M&A / General Corporate at A1 level since junior experience in transactional practices is very transferable. At A2 level you might have to discount some experience.

I am currently an SA at a Tier 3. Got an offer from a Tier 1. But they are willing to take me as an Associate only. Plus, the pay they are offering is marginally more than what I currently make and far less than what a freshly recruited A0 at the said Tier 1 would make. What to do ?

I worked with Lawsikho for nearly 2 years and here's my honest feedback.

So I joined Lawsikho as an intern in their Test - Prep team back in January 2022 where I was responsible for preparing mocks, daily GK Quizzes, Notes etc., for even Judiciary and SEBI - Law Officer level exams. Yes, you read it right! A 3rd year law student, that too from a very average private college preparing the material you rely upon for cracking exams when you paid more than 1 Lakh for their courses.

You must be thinking that for all this hassle, I would be getting at least 10K per month as stipend. Well no, I got barely 5K per month, and if I took a leave for 1 day, I would lose out on my pay. In late 2022, when I asked for pay revision, I was told that I'd be getting 8K per month but I'd have to work for 7 hours daily, 30 days a month without any leave and if I failed to "justify" my 7 hour output, I would have to take a pay reduction.

Guess what? I never took that increment and finally left the organisation in late 2023 with the same pay (5K) which I was drawing at the beginning of my tenure, working 5-6 hours per day and preparing material for courses worth lakhs!
