Hi, I have observed that multiple students across law universities in India undertake Research Assistantship under Professors from foreign universities, or established subject-area based professors in India. While looking for a good learning opportunity, I am also looking to earn some side income to fund a portion of my college expenses by being a Research Assistant to a professor from a good law university.

Legally India's readership is supposed to be comprised of those lawyers who read law at undergraduate level and beyond at the best universities in India and around the world. But graduates (especially law graduates) of the best universities in India and around the world have been taught one thing, for sure: reading and understanding a question, and addressing a question directly as it is asked, and not some other version or variation of a question that they made up in their heads. Seemingly, therefore, the reputation of Legally India in this regard has been misrepresented.

If such seats are very few, then aren't private law schools like Jindal and Symbi the only realistic option for those who are excluded from these quotas? If you have a JRF, immediately start a PhD, complete it within 3 years and then apply. The reason being, an assistant professor is selected based on API score. A LLM+JRF gets you 7 marks only. A PhD gets you 30. Notice the huge difference. Moreover, your fellowship will only start after you obtain a PhD admission. Every year the competition is increasing. You may end having nothing in your hands if you don't get admission within 3 years. So focus first on getting a PhD. After which, the income is based on the 7th pay commission and you may get around 1 to 1.5 lakhs per month depending on university. Jindal or Symbi would also give you more if you have a good publications record as well.

P.S. if you're getting into academia, don't expect huge money. It's work-life balance. Nothing beats corporate for money and judiciary for power.

I’ve spent almost a year working extremely hard in an in-house legal team as an apprentice/trainee. Long hours, high ownership, strong feedback, and constant appreciation about my work and the standards I set. But despite all the praise, I wasn’t converted into a full-time role.

Now I feel stuck in a strange gap , too experienced for entry-level roles, but not “experienced enough” for most in-house openings that ask for 2+ years PQE.

I've gotten a sub 200 rank in clat 2026, (parents aren't letting me go to NUJS), so my only option is NLUJ (I've already been provisionally allotted). But it seems like a big-time compromise to me. Reading NLS journals makes me realize how far ahead they are in terms of research, publication, reputation etc. My interests primarily lie at the intersection of international law. business law and arbitration, and I'm aiming for a foreign masters at a top university to pursue international law. Given the above, taking a drop to aim for NLS next year seems like a reasonable option. Please furnish me with your inputs.
