I am currently working as an A0 at a Big4 (joined as a fresher). The pay (at par with Tier 2 and close to Tier 1), work-life balance, culture, and overall perks are quite good, and I have more than enough time for myself (unlike my friends in Tier 1). However, the work feels largely clerical and administrative, with very little application of law. As a fresher, I want to build strong core legal skills and eventually move into a Tier 1 law firm or a substantive in-house legal role. Many of my colleagues have moved to bulge-bracket firms like JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, where the pay is excellent, but from what I see, the work there is also fairly administrative and not really aligned with a traditional in-house counsel role. At this stage, I feel my law degree is not being fully utilized, and growth and hikes are relatively slower compared to Tier 1 firms(A0 to C3). I would really appreciate advice on how to upskill, build the right profile, and plan this transition. When is the right time to switch, and what should I focus on right now? Please advise.
