It's no surprise that 2nd and 3rd lawyers have it easier in litigation because of the connections and clientele built over generations, along with the prestige of past generations. But what about 1st gen lawyers? Do they really not make it big in litigation?
Guide me a little here, because from what I see, corporate is arguably a safer option for someone looking for job security and decent pay, something not guaranteed to you as a 1st gen lawyer in litigation...You come across tons and tons of posts and instances with people barely surviving on 10-15k a month in tier 1 cities. But is that all one can hope for? Personally, looking at the working conditions of corporate life has never been lucrative to me. Is entering litigation as a first gen not worth it?
What I'm really asking is, what makes a difference? What can make a 1st generation lawyer stand out in litigation, and is it even possible to get to the level of other advocates and their prestige? If so, how?
1. How is the work and practice?
2. How large is the team? Is the team toxic?
3. How are the 2 JP’s under him in NCR? Do they only execute or do they run their own practice under Mr. Singh’s umbrella?
4. There is a lot said about the abnormal work hours and expectation of being available in office on weekends - Any truth to it?
5. General tantrums are expected but is there anything out of the ordinary?
This surely puts forward a question, how much do these best advocates of our country pay their junior?
There's way more nuance to it. There are different sides of the HC - you cannot have a single lawyer claim the "no 1" position blanket across. Would Sibal be a good choice for a criminal matter, for instance? Or a mat. appeal? Definitely no. Is he the "no 1" on the IP or commercial side? Debatable. Top tier, sure. But you cannot have a "number one" like that in real life.

Just want to know
1. His father was a senior advocate and an MP of Parliament. He comes from wealth, so this wealth is not the result of toil in one generation.
2. He is/was a sitting MP himself with deep connections in political and corporate circles, which helps him earn more than possible ways - brokering deals, getting good deals/investment options at a cheap rate.
3. His father's connections helped him become one of the youngest Senior Advocate of our times, plus he also rose from the backing of the Rajasthan Bar lobby.
4. His investments must have compounded to help him amass such wealth.
That said, please understand that he has, through his sheer talent and hard work, reaped the benefits of all the privileges available to him. He is one of India's finest litigators at present and a sitting MP who also fulfils his political duties. For me, personally, he is at a zenith of functioning, which is very difficult to achieve for mere mortals like us and no doubt an inspiration for the younger generation.
But my question was about law firms
My worry is simple, after 2-3 years of privacy compliance work in-house, can I realistically move to a law firm's TMT, privacy litigation teams? Or does in-house basically kill your chances with firms?
I get that in-house to law firm move is hard generally. But DPDP is creating a whole new regulatory and adjudicatory framework. The Data Protection Board will need representation. Firms will need people who understand how compliance actually works inside companies. So can this be different from the usual one way situation?
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's been in DP/privacy roles (in-house or firm side). Which firms are even serious about building privacy practices right now? Thanks.

For high court practice, knowing the regional language ofcourse helps and not knowing it puts you at a disadvantage. But knowing regional language for this level certainly is not a sine qua non.
For lower courts, you cannot survive without knowing the regional language.
For law firm / in-house roles, doesn't matter if you don't know the regional language.
What's better ? Heard GNLU's growth in placements is much better than any other T1 NLU. They had 40 PPO(s) as much as NLS last year.
NUJS has legacy but 5 Acre campus and the drama that happened last year with VC, TMC and Student body is quite concerning, although I do admit I have read that they along with NALSAR have had the best placements. Don't know if NUJS can keep up with their performance after BSC LLB.

I know it's challenging.. very challenging infact, but I like the work I see, I like the pressure sometimes, I also feel that I could be a good lawyer. But the start in this field is just unfair.
I can work hard, I can get stuff done and I have my mom supporting me.. but I know she's scared too. I know I'll have to earn enough money, even through she says there's no pressure.
I have heard that people go independent in 1 year, 2 years and that some even take 10 years. Good networking and good presentation is the key. I've heard all of it. But the internet, the colleagues, friends and even seniors scare me. I have tried to stay positive but it just goes away as soon as I hear them speak.
I am pretty sure a lot of people in my position and with my background would have gone through this stress and I also am sure that the stress is not at its peak yet. If so, and if you can relate, can you share with me how it got better? When and how did you find out this is for you or not for you? How long was the survival period and how did you survive? Whats the best place to start money and mentorship wise..? (doesn't have to be 40k pm and all but just enough to survive with a little extra)
I'm sure to put hardwork for the first 3 years.. but running on 10k pm for so long is just impossible. Does it get better or does it stay the same?

But the most enriching part of the internship is observing Sir argue matters in Court; he is simply a pleasure to watch in Court, and yes, you would be in awe of him. I can tell you most assuredly that this itself is a masterclass in oral advocacy, he is indeed a Sr. Adv. of high stature. I would urge you to note down the exact points that Sir argues in a given case; I will elaborate on this later.
As for the work and environment, it is collegial and liberal—you would be handed over briefs of numerous matters and would be given the liberty to read and analyse them. You would have to draft case briefs and conduct extensive legal research on particular points of law, as instructed by Sir himself. However, you would not be spoon-fed, and you must not tread with any such expectation; instead, you would be trained rigorously as to how to think on your own feet, i.e., being taught how to teach yourself to tackle the challenges that the practice of law poses. Furthermore, Sir himself would assign you tasks and check them; you are expected to work diligently. Also, once you have watched Sir argue a matter and have noted down the arguments (as advised earlier), it would provide you with the perspective of what points one should canvass and those that are best kept unagitated. This fundamental exercise would aid and accelerate the development of your litigation instincts.
Above all, interactions with Sir would be the best part of the internship. A small bit of advice would be to always carry a notebook and a pen. Firstly, you would be asked about what you had observed during the day’s proceedings, and secondly, Sir explains difficult points of law that you would have to research, and it really helps to have everything noted down. The quality and depth of research assigned are excellent.
In essence, the internship is worth every bit of it, given that you are meticulous and enthusiastic. At the cost of reiteration, diligence is rewarded, while lacklustre or lukewarm effort is not. Interns who show initiative and a genuine interest in the files are encouraged to go through case papers, assist with research, and prepare short notes where required. I personally opine that the internship offers a steep learning curve if one is willing and driven to learn.
As an anecdote, I do vividly remember getting the jaw-drop reaction from other advocates, court staff, and even members of the general (and aware) public the moment I mentioned that I was interning under Mr. Edulji. I’m sure that you will experience the same.

You should informally seek clarity from your SA/PA/Partner about how exactly the PPO/placement process at your specific firm/organisation works and mention your strong interest to permanently join the team. Additionally, also ask whether you need to submit a presentation/research paper and/or give a PPO interview and/or come again for an assessment internship for the same.
Casually asking this can help you plan your next steps, integrate better with the team and build good network connections as well!

Is it a trend of sort?
Learning-wise, in these areas it's good, but I'm worried that maybe I shouldn't restrict/narrow down my areas of practice so early, I feel like maybe i should try everything especially when im young and as i get old, I can't exactly experiment, so I need to figure out what i want and dont want, but on the other side im thinking the exposure pay and all is good right now, so once I learn everything here, I can leave for another office, or maybe if he expands his practice i can stay, as he's very considerate and also seems good. I'm stuck in a dilemma now; I definitely want to stay for a year, and I understand I'm young enough to experiment and all and figure stuff out eventually, but what if in a year people think i'm not employable enough elsewhere or something? any advice is appreciated
For context, I am an Associate currently at a Tier 3 firm who is looking to move out. I know that most HRs ask for past salary slips, whereas we don't know their budget for the role giving them the upper hand in salary negotiations which I feel is totally unfair. Additionally, asking pay slips is illegal in other countries but is not so in India due to which HRs continue to exploit us. Can I just not share my past salary details or would this be considered as arrogant thereby making me lose my chance entirely? Has anyone tried this before. Please advise.
