My firm (T1-ish Mumbai) hired a PA and promoted him to partner. However, he has no associates under him. An A0 is supposed to join in three months, but till then he has to work alone.

Understandably, the new partner is not happy with his situation. He’s relying on interns and keeps on borrowing associates from other teams. I’m curious if anyone else has witnessed something like this.

Can someone explain how mass movement of partners (along with their associates) from one law firm to another actually works in practice?

Had a few questions around this:

1.Do partners typically take their clients along? What happens in cases where the client was originally referred by the old firm?

2. How do they handle fee mandates with clients when they move — do they renegotiate or just continue on similar terms?

3.How are conflicts managed, especially if the new firm already has clients who are competitors of the incoming partner’s clients?

4.What happens to the partnership / LLP agreement of the old firm, and how does onboarding in the new firm usually work?

I know it varies case to case, but would be great to understand what the usual market practice looks like.

Privacy pillar is a privacy automation tool company and rather small. If you join you’ll work only around privacy automation and not laws. However i do understand we dont always have a choice and sometimes have to make do with what we can find.

KCO Noida is an excellent place to work, especially in terms of quality. There is a Senior Associate (initials VG) whose work is truly exceptional. She is highly dedicated and consistently goes the extra mile, particularly in mentoring and guiding junior team members, reflecting both strong quality and work ethic.

It is charmingly naïve to imagine that Kamra would struggle to afford the fees of Senior Advocate Navroz Seervai. Those whose interests he so diligently advances, under the comforting disguise of comedy and citizen-centric discourse, are hardly short of resources. They would not only remunerate him generously but also ensure that his pronouncements are buttressed by suitably aligned legal counsel. A 12th standard passout not having much awareness would consider these facts as illustrated on their website to be the "brand" only for which they will be paying 60 lakh+ as per latest fees.

Jindal has absolutely nothing to worry about. The college is filled with children of law firm owners, Senior advocates, rich businessmen and CEOs, IAS officers and politicians. In fact, tons of early NLSIU alumni send their children to Jindal. I can name at least 10 of them.

These kids will land up in the top of firms in India. Many will go on to study abroad and join law firms abroad. Their future is absolutely secure, much more than the future of even the top NLU grads from regular middle class families

Someone once told me that in a course that recruits to Britain's Special Air Service (a unit of their special forces) get told on their introductory course by their instructors something like, "We aren't gonna try and recruit you. Hi, as someone who is graduating in 2027, I feel it is apt for me to reply here, the Placement scenes are quite ok over here obviously, not as great as other private colleges across India (please note this is in spite of Christ being in the heart of a tier 1 city). We have had decent campus placements especially in BO 23 and 25, The BO 26 was quite subpar tbh (not shitting on the batch but it was not as great as compared to previous batches). Honest suggestion as another person commented earlier only join Christ if you have no choice or if circumstances forces you to, the faculty except 1 or 2 is below average or bad (most of them are inexperienced llm passouts), so even if you score high in academics, when you go for internships you will realize how bad it actually is i.e the teaching in Christ. Externals are not supported much in college. It is your prep and hardwork which gets marketed as a collective win through instagram or linkedin lmao (truly communist in a weird way, marx would be proud). Therefore, I heavily suggest turn back if you can, no suffering is worth coming to Christ (ironically it is hell where youre rewarded nothing). Only good thing may be that it will prepare you for the toxic legal environment which you may face when you enter the practice lmao. If NLUs decide not to offer the BA-LLB combination, then most would have to close down (including NLS, NLUD, NALSAR, and WBNUJS). BA-LLB has been their flagship programme, and will remain so - while the world moves on. Anything else would be severely disruptive, hence they do more of the same.

These NLUs are trying to move ahead, looking into their rear-view mirrors.

Hey bro, the anxiety is understandable. However, you shouldn't worry about getting HNLU (or any T2) for that matter. Yes, compared to the T1s, getting a good job is difficult but it isn't impossible.

HNLU has a lot of alums placed in extremely well-to do positions. If they could do it with a fraction of the resources the college possesses at present, I see no reason why the present batches would not get into similar positions. Hnlu peeps get jobs beyond AZB. So many of our seniors past and present have been placed in firms like Trilegal, SAM, CAM, JSA among others. Yes, a lot of credit has to go to their own efforts and hard work. However a lot of them landed that job because the RCC managed to laboriously mail these firms for internships in the first place (Exceptions do exist, not everyone gets a job due to the RCC). If they could do it despite the T2 tag, you could do it too.

HNLU is no decline as of now. To contrary, I believe the college is currently going through a really good period. Numerous moot wins and qualifications, mid rankers bagging great jobs, the 3rd and 4th years bagging really good internships with latter having started converting them into PPOs very recently. If they could do it, I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to do the same. Yes, the college has some problems; the admin being the biggest of them all. However, despite the structural limitations, the college seems to do well and possibly better in the future.

As someone who has close friends in the other T2s and in a few T1s, unlike a lot other colleges (especially in the T2 range), the senior-junior culture is largely healthy. There's a strong culture to get into corp across batches and its hard not to find someone who hasn't attempted to specialise in specific practice areas may it be disputes, gen corp, comp law, or even TMT. If they could do it, what's stopping you?

Choosing the college wouldn't necessarily meaning closing the doors on the onset, more accurately you leave the door ajar. The college gives you a few opportunities to work upon. To fully open the door, you'll have to work; sometimes you'll have to work harder than your peers in T1 NLUs to get the same opportunities. This is the sole reason why T1s are T1s, and T2s the T2s. The door is ajar, if you're smart about how you structure your academics, your internships, and ultimately your work ethic, nothing will stop you from opening that door. Countless alums have done it in the past, seniors are doing it in the present, and many will be doing in the future.

The firm takes interns via the contact route. If you're applying 4-5 months in advance, the HR will ask you to resend the application 2-3 months before the required month only to end up sending you a crude slots filled month. This has happened to multiple people from what I have heard

1. The Last minutes' gang -
A. Last minute dumping shit on you despite having that email rotting for maybe weeks and because you don't crack under pressure, but you come through at the cost of your health (especially hair) because you don't want to lose the job and the job now suddenly seems to be hinging on this very last minute but urgent task.

B. Selective amnesia: Doesn't communicate within the Partner circle for things that are only known to them and then last minute changes strategy and you end up doing the whole thing again, ruining your life and sleep just because that one assface didn't speak to the lead partner.

2. The "Give uper":
Sees that two partners (one whiney + banshee and the other absentee) are arbitrarily leading one matter, fails to even discuss the potential strategies with the SA-1 and A2 and simply literally raises hands and says I give up, ask the other guy. Lo-behold the team of various types of associates making strategies and formulating ways to save the client and taking to the lead who throws it back to the previous partner.

3. The Deadweight credit hogger:
Doesnt bring in clients and instead expects the associates to bring in the clients, do all the work, including ensuring the work is done perfectly because they won't do the review properly and then take a cut and credit for your work.

Take a partial. First sem of college is usually light and you should be able to do majority of the work within 2 weeks of prep.
Anyways, do not give CLAT more than 2 to 3 years.
Try to get into some T1 from Vacancies because yes there is an opportunity gap between T1(s) and T2(s) when it comes to corporate jobs
