Students proactively pluck 19 jobs even as 0 law firms turn up at HNLU’s Abhanpur campus

HNLU Raipur: locational disadvantage
HNLU Raipur: locational disadvantage
Exclusive: Legal Process Outsourcing Unit (LPO) Pangea 3 was the only recruiter visiting HNLU Raipur’s rural Abhanpur campus for the class graduating this year, but 19 out of 60 total students secured jobs across 10 law firms, two LPOs and a company. The Recruitment Coordination Committee (RCC) placed 12 out of its 31 subscribers from the graduating batch.

Nine out of the 12 RCC placements were through pre placement offers (PPO) by Amarchand Mangaldas, Trilegal Delhi, Juris Corp Mumbai, Singhania & Co Bangalore, Udwadia & Udeshi Mumbai, LPO Mindtree Bangalore, and robotics research company Robosoft Systems Mumbai.

HNLU’s RCC for 2012 said: “The strategic focus of the RCC in HNLU has always been on PPOs which gives us an edge not only in bagging early placements before the campus recruitment season starts, but also in overcoming the economic and locational hurdle of on campus recruitments which engage a lot of time of the firms, by working on offshore interviews.”

Pangea 3 hired three students on campus.

Seven students were recruited by applying independently to BMR Associates Mumbai, Krishnamurthy & Co Mumbai, Desai & Diwanji Mumbai, TPM Solicitors Delhi, Zeus Delhi, and Mindtree’s Pune branch.

Three other top-ranking students of the class were offered jobs by law firms, according to the RCC, but rejected the offers to pursue an LLM in Kings College London, Queens Mary University London, and the National University of Singapore.

Three students are awaiting confirmation of their applications for judicial clerkships, while six others will join court practice.

Three students prepare to chart out the unusual alternate career of enrolling with India’s defense services, having cleared the Combined Defense Services Exam (CDSE), while 13 students forming a majority of the remaining batch plan to appear for the civil services exam.

“Students have an inclination towards diverse professional choices after a degree in law, deliberately shying away from desk jobs, which has become the conventional yardstick of success these days” stated the RCC.

20 out of the 36 jobs secured by the batch of 48 last year were also through PPOs, after last year’s RCC also cited the “locational disadvantage” suffered by HNLU in inviting law firms to participate in campus placements. Out of the six recruiters who visited campus last year, three were LPOs, two were companies, and one was a bank.

There are no numbers in HNLU's column. Thanks.

Dear Barely Legal,

Thank you for your comment.

The exact number of hires made by each law firm, was not clear from the data supplied by HNLU's RCC.

We are trying to confirm the same, and will update the column shortly.

Best wishes,
Prachi

Hey Prachi,

Why will you not put up a combined table setting out each of the NLU's stats against the lawfirms/recruiters and put them out?? It helps people like me who would like to look at this data in one place and will help you, because the comments on those will hysterical and will not stop. You know you can expect a wankfest of "I am bigger than you" and "my daddy strongest" comments across the board!!

Please do it! Imagine the entertainment (and I will get my data!!)

I am certain that in a few short hours from now this forum will be filled with numerous similar comments about how sucky a future HNLU as an institution has etc. Let me offer some perspective here. Taking up placements are choices that the students of the graduating batch(Batch 7) have made as individuals. The batch was always different from your regular law school batch and by charting out the career directions that they have, they've only vindicated the reputation they always had back in university.

Some of the people who are going for the civil services and litigation are the people who had the highest grades in class and ones that would have bagged many a law firm job. As a junior, I am proud of them for having resisted the lure of a plush law firm job, choosing instead to litigate, to speak for those who cannot tell their own stories, to defend those the hundreds who may otherwise forever be lost..I am being needlessly poetic perhaps but I'll take that over being needlessly crass any day.

While talking of placements etc. , one must also understand that HNLU has seen a period of change over the last year and a half. We had a VC who left due to personal reasons after a couple of months of joining. The present VC has started the process of getting proper systems into place and I'm quite certain that the results will start to show sooner rather than later.

I'd end this by saying that I'll be in the third year in a month from now and I'm not worried about the kind of future that HNLU will provide me with in a couple of years from now. That is because I believe in the institution, in my teachers and perhaps most significantly in myself.

Putting the diplomacy aside, 'pity HNLU', I hope I run into you at some moot/debate/quiz sometime. We'll see who pities whom then.

Thank you!

I can understand the pain, LOL, but reality is otherwise and it sucks.. Sorry the great mooter/debater, the story just shows a true picture of the sad state of HNLU recruitments. The people who had the highest grades did not get a job just reflects how pathetic the evaluation system at HNLU is. Even toppers of the class were found to be unfit for jobs. The reality is that everyone is after high-paying jobs. Once everyone has rejected these ppl, they suddenly decide that they will go for litigation.

The people who had the highest grades 'chose' not to take the jobs. Are you even reading what I'm saying? I'm sure people where you study take up litigation after being rejected but here in HNLU, litigation is often a first choice for people even when they enter college.

The toppers of this batch, are the same students who put their life, their careers on the stake when they chose to stand up what was right(Yes, we still remember the 'strike' fondly.) They brought about a change in the university. I can guarantee you that these people, along with others of their ilk would be the ones who would go on to define the future of this country. Big words I know, but trust me - I know what I am saying.

As one of my collegemates pointed out - The next batch that will be passing out is more of your regular firm oriented lawschool batch. You can take a look at their placements and then we'll talk. :)

Thank You!

My dear Parahoot HNLU-ite who is currently in the second year, I am more than surprised that you FONDLY REMEMBER the strike which happened at a time when you were not even a part of the college.

The fact that you are so proud of the strike goes to show why HNLU has pathetic recruitment records. People gave up academics and forcefully shut down the library for half a semester shouting slogans and fighting with each other. People did not PUT their career at stake, they were simply more interested in intra-college politics than working for a top-tier firm. For people who cannot decide what they want to do right now will define the future of the country. I may not live to see that day. Sadly, when a news website is merely reporting true figures of recruitment given to them by the RCC of YOUR college, you engage into a senseless defence of incompetence and mediocrity..

Please thank me for trying to enlighten such a lost soul..

When I talk about 'we' at HNLU, I am talking about the institution and not about myself as a person. A And this was never supposed to be a 'senseless defence of incompetence and mediocrity'. Numbers don't always tell you the complete story, do they? All I was trying to do was offer some perspective and maybe explain why the numbers are what they are.

Hope you're enjoying your job at whatever top-tier law firm you're working for. I'm sure you will 'define the future of the country' that way. I am not even surprised that there are people 'pitying' HNLU, what with 'insiders' like you.

P.S. I would sincerely like to apologize to all the other readers for bringing in the 'strike' angle here. This article was never about that. However, since I have brought the strike into the picture, it is my duty to clarify that it was never about student politics. It was the rampant corruption in University that the students stood up against.

This will be it. Thank You!

please don't make excuses for a disappointing placement scenario in hnlu. our numbers and placement scenario speak for itself. nobody outside gives two hoots as to how "awesome" or how "different" the batch is. our numbers speak for themselves. it is high time we began introspection and realized the problem lays within our RCC and college admin along with the student body. rather than shifting the blame on vague and absurd reasons, we should acknowledge that the college is not doing all that great. Please remove your rose tinted glasses and look at the situation practically. the situation is quite alarming for the next batches as the batch strength is almost triple the size of the one that pass out. I know our loyalties lie with our alma mater, but we must not make excuses for ourselves like losers do. if our placement scenario is bad, accept it! end of story! what are we going to do about it is the question. you don't need to dignify the comments like"we pity hnlu" with comments either. they are simply losers who have no arguments to substantiate their statements. so chill!

I think what my fellow hnu-ite has said, reflects all our sentiments collectively. Adding to that, it is also to be noted that despite the locational disadvantage (its the fact that raipur is not a metro and most law firms are located in mumbai, delhi, kolkata or bangalore) students still bag top tier firms solely on the credibility of their work (also called PPOs). Moreover, the fact that law firms could not conduct on campus recruitments, is more of a policy matter for the RCC. Previous RCCs in HNLU have never concentrated on campus recruitments as the cost of getting firms down to campus is always more, and conmparatively, offshore interviews and internship (leading to PPOs) have been the preferred startegy as a trend. However, with the current RCC working towards their own day zero scheduled in June, 2012, we shall talk once their day zero report comes in. And lastly, I too second the dare to mr./ms.i-Pity-hnlu- I hope I run into you in some moot/debate/ even internship. We'll see who's more pitiable then.
ahem 24 May 2012, 07:30

i dont know about the rest, but most law schools are NOT located in metros.

NLS was in nagarbhavi, far from bangalore until the flyover right from college to town hall fixed that. nalsar is in shameerpet and a less charming hamlet you would be hard pressed to find. nlu jodhpur is outside mandore, which is a dusty village 13km from jodhpur city. RMLNLU, RGNUL are in lucknow and patiala, not corporate hotspots last i checked. and now there is an NLU in assam - assam of the beauteous women and tea estates, my friend, not assam of the AMSS and Luthra.

NUJS and NLUD are the exceptions amongst NLUs w/ ref to location.

while being in delhi is going to help NLUD, Symbi, being outside it has not hurt NLS, NLUJ or NALSAR. ive met guys from HNLU, you people are hardworking and smart; you just have some RCC problems that you will fix. however do not try to blame the bad placements - and they are bad - on the bucolic location of your college.

all of us have been there and most of us got jobs.

@nalsar- I presume its not a crime to not think as you do. Not everyone indeed is after high paying jobs. Esp in light of the current trend where even ur toppers who take high paying jobs quit firms in 2 yrs to pursue higher studies, our toppers are smart enough to figure out what they want to do in life, a little earlier than you guys. Afterall, the difference in clat scores is barely 8-12 marks vetween the last guy who gets through nalsar and the first guy who comes here.

i just want to point out the obvious that numbers speak for themselves and as a university hnlu has not done the needful for recruitments.a university at the end of the day s judged by the placements. And this so called "locational disadvantage" is bullshit because raipur is not located in some far fetched corner of the world. trust me, if the student quality is good, recruitments will take place. as far as i know, hnlu is now taking in a batch of 175. if only 19 out of 60 are placed from PPOs, then god help the batch with a strength like that.

The most sad thing about this story is that students studying in india's one of the most resource rich state capital have to suffer from location handicap, this is because of scores of mindless sheeps who waste the quality education provided by NLU'S to support the crony capitalism that grips india , instead of fighting it.

One hnlu thread doesn't start and people jump and bring the strike in. @whosoeveryouarewhobroughtup- "Shut the library for half a semester" do you even go to the library when its open in your college? We're glad we did that, coz thanks to that we now have a three floored library (and anyone who has even visited the campus for a moot or conference will tell you how grand it is. It was not a strike for jobs, it was a strike against corruption that we started at a college level and now you don't fail to endorse the brand when anna hazare and his comrades call on you to join the bandwagon. So let's not deviate from the topic.
@ilovelegallyindia- the batch of 2013 has its day zero is mid june. As soon as we get the data we'll provide it to LI.

Thanks for showing us how to rise above hate with this little rant of yours, son. You can blame the ex-VC all you want, we all do. Inspite of a dud like him, the students continued to do well on all fronts. Despite the mocking we faced in the first few months of MPL season 3, we hit right back with, inter alia, two international moot wins and BCI. Now with FM leading the brigade, we've never been more optimistic. So, just as we did in the face of corruption allegations that our admin faced, it might do you some good to introspect a little bit and think about what you can do to better the situation, instead of your current approach- a deadly concoction of denial and desperate, frustrated rants. Good day :)

Pangea3 takes 3. LP Oh No.

Just a general word of advise. Irrespective of the law school you studied in, an LPO career choice can well prove fatal for a lawyer. An LPO salary may (barely) sustain you for that month, but does little in terms of laying a foundation for career growth.

If things don't work out at campus recruitment, its prudent to join a litigation lawyer till your career stabilizes. Even if your earnings are low in the beginning, the intrinsic value of what you learn is high. This places you in good stead to either consolidate your career in litigation or be far better qualified to diversify into others areas of the industry. On the contrary, joining an LPO simply means that you are putting your career growth in cold storage. Once you get out, you'll realize that you need to start from scratch all over again.

Wellwisher is absolutely correct what he has suggested. Joining a LPO may not be a good start to a law student's career. Join litigation and believe me there will be several opportunities once you are experienced. People do have opportunities at firms or as in-house counsels post some exp. The only issue may be that in case anyone has taken a bank loan and needs to repay.

Why do you guys at LI have the system of moderating comments? I mean, I don't think it is of much use, what with insensitive comments like these being allowed.

Faculty and staff at HNLU are like dementors.
Students at HNLU are like prisoners of Azkaban.

Hey Prachi,
Please include NLIU, NLS and GNLU in that tabular analysis also as it might be useful in giving everyone a fair view of how these law colleges are functioning.

Hi,

The table has now been updated with figures from our report on NLIU Bhopal as well.

We have been in touch with GNLU's RCC and they declined to disclose any placement and other figures before end of next month.

An update on GNLU will follow as soon as the details are confirmed.

We are also following up on NLS's final year placements and keep your eyes peeled for an update shortly.

Thanks,

Best wishes,
Prachi

Declined to disclose before end of June!!! Not difficult to guess then. Are they planning to call Dr. Kainth Associates and Awwwgustus so that they can at least say 2 firms turned up at GNLU?

The intake at NLU Jodhpur is 100, not 80. Stop these blatant errors.

Hi,

Thank you for your comment, however there is no error in the reported batch strength of NLU Jodhpur, if we go by the informstion supplied to us by the RCC.

Best wishes,

HNLU is a good law school. I fail to understand the reasons for the above comments. I know a lot of alumni from HNLU who are brilliant and exceptional and who work at firms like AZB, AMSS, Trilegal, Luthra, JSA, NDA, Desai & Diwanji, Linklaters, A&O, CC etc.

Would you pinpoint as to the alumni who have or do work at A&O, Linklaters or CC etc.
As far as the hotshot law firms are concerned, students might get into such firms but look at the number of people getting through. If barely ten percent of the total students graduating secure placements at such law firms, I would hardly call it a good law school.

If we take a look at the people from HNLU working at AMSS, it would be less than 10 (All offices combined together!) This is sad for an NLU which had its first batch pass-out in 2008, and has seen 7 batches graduate already.

I understand that this alone is no yardstick for looking into how good a law school is, but this speaks by volumes as to how many students from HNLU are found to be fit enough for a tier-1 law firm hring abt 100 ppl every year.

Don't you also need to consider that a relatively small number of students have graduated from HNLU? I am not sure of the earlier numbers but the batch that graduated before this had around 40 students. The last batch had 60. The 2013 batch too is around 40-odd. So the number of people working anywhere, big firms or small will not be as large as some of the other law schools!

Can you please let us know who are the HNLU alumini working at A&O and CC? You could say Linklaters India (TTA), but it is wrong to assert incorrect facts.

In fact, the total number of people from HNLU working at any of these firms is less than the number that joins AMSS every year. I also doubt if there is anyone currently at JSA from HNLU. Looks like a little exaggeration is always pemitted...

I have closely worked with a HNLU pass out in a leading law firm in Kolkata and I don't think he is a NLU material. There was hardly any difference between him and DU pass outs (btw, I am not from DU). Infact, I find DU fellows to be have more depth in legal procedures (these include ROC, FEMA rules, SEBI guidelines, etc.)

I do not know which NALSAR-ite has commented or whether that person is at all a NALSAR-ite.

Trying to brush aside the talk of copulatory organs and the debates over circumcision I just wanted to humbly opine from a personal standpoint that I have met and interacted with a lot of students and HNLU alumni during internships, etc. and my observation has forced me to have a rather good view of HNLU.

I have found them to be hard working, humble, decent and technically-sound set of people.

I for one think it takes guts to take up cudgels against the college authorities even if I may personally not agree with rebellious ideas and the idea of a strike in particular.

Placements have been not up to the mark everywhere. Let us not indulge in unnecessary mud-slinging over placements because in the end it becomes a debate on the sizes of individual copulatory organs again.

Yeah cant we just appreciate people instead of crying and cribbing like 2 year old's? I have come across some really hardworking and efficient ppl from HNLU as well.. Its jst sad that we are too busy fighting about useless things instead of appreciating the fact that HNLU is actually doing good given d fact that they have seen bad days! You don't become NLSIU and NALSAR over-nite it takes time.

@HNLU- Kudos! good work! it will be great to see when these people boasting of PPO's get dere ass kicked by people whu have decided to go for judiciary and litigation. wait and watch!

Its a worrying trend to read about this. In the past few years L-schools have mushroomed like the zillions of shady B-schools that we see everywhere. The legal services market simply does not have that kind of capacity to provide good jobs to 1500+ lawyers each year. Out of those, fewer than 50-75 will get the best jobs. In a way this was expected. When NALSAR, NLS and NUJS are struggling with recruitment (yes, even nls managed only 27-28 out of about 50 on Day zero with many less than stellar jobs), how could HNLU expect anything? From the perspective of a recruiter it makes zero sense to go to HNLU.

These results should be kept in mind when CLAT aspirants choose their law schools, not campus size and vintage of the college.

I am not too concerned with student quality as that is a function of both CLAT rank and the CLAT is not very scientific beyond a point.

More important is the dilution in the brand of the NLUs as a result. Although there are 1500 seats on offer , the difference between the top 300 and ranks 800-1100 is significant. The top 4-5 NLUs should perhaps have a seperate unified management structure and admit the others based on performance over time.

http://arhamvista.blogspot.in/ Please go and visit this link all of you. This is the collection of a few works of a student of the batch that graduated from Hidayatullah National Law University this year.Just to let everyone know, he was one of the toppers of his batch who could have easily broken into any top-tier law firm of the country had he wanted to. Resisting the lure and security of an air conditioned office and a fat pay package, he's instead chosen to follow his instincts and is trying to eke out a career in judicial services to serve the country. What would you call him? A 'loser' or an 'idealist'? 'Mediocre' or 'inspiring'?He is just one of the several students of this batch who have dared to be different. I hope all those who have been running their mouths mindlessly about the placement scenario of this batch stand up and take notice. That recruiters across the board choose to ignore the amazing talent and merit of several students of our college based on pre-conceived notions and using the excuse of locational disadvantaged does not make us any less of an university. The students community here is trying its best to bring about an improvement in this scenario which I'm sure will happen eventually. After all, "Rome was not built in a day". Hidayatullah Forever!!

its a simple logic..if u are good and hardworking u will be recruited, maybe on campus, and if ur college isn't that lucky then off campus. Hnlu faces administrative problems, the strike had not gone down well with the recruiters but tht doesnot mean tht the students churned out after 5 years by the college are bad.
