Exclusive: 57 out of a class of 100 NUJS Kolkata students graduating this year secured jobs with 26 organizations, through a mix of campus recruitment and applying independently, while almost a third of the remaining class opted to appear for civil and judicial service exams.
The NUJS Campus Recruitment Committee (CRC) for 2012 confirmed that 68 students participated in the recruitment process, though data on how many placements were secured through the CRC is not clear.
41 placements resulted for the batch of 2012 from Day Zero, Legally India reported last year.
As of today, 37 students are placed across 12 Indian law firms, while four foreign law firms have engaged five students.
Law firms
Amarchand Mangaldas and Luthra & Luthra led the 2012 batch’s recruitment tables. Amarchand recruited 10 students, two through pre placement offers (PPOs) and Luthra recruited nine, all through PPOs.
Trilegal made five PPO hires, while AZB & Partners and Bharucha & Partners hired three students each.
J Sagar Associates (JSA) recruited two students.
Majmudar & Partners, Vaish Associates, SRGR Law offices, Tule & Co, Athena Law Associates and Augustus Law Firm, each recruited one student.
Among the foreign law firms, European law firm CMS Cameron McKenna LLP led with two hires, while Allen & Overy, Linklaters and an Irish law firm hired one student each.
In-house
Eight students accepted in-house roles across three companies and two banks.
ICICI Bank was the lead in-house recruiter hiring three, followed by management consulting company Legal League Consulting which made two hires.
Deutsche Bank, insurance company Bajaj Allianz, and Steel manufacturer Shyam Steel Industries hired one student each.
Fellowships, CLAT coaches, LPO
Three students opted for research fellowships and were placed with Law for Change, LAMP, and PRS.
Six year old CLAT coaching institute CLAT Possible also recruited two students, while LPO Pangea 3 made one hire.
Others
Nine students opted out of the placement process to appear for the civil services and the judicial services exams, eight applied for judicial clerkships and await confirmation.
Four students have secured LLM admissions, including one in King’s College London.
A few others are understood to be joining court practice.
The NUJS CRC 2012 coordinators Ashutosh and Kumar Rahul said in a statement: “The profile and number of recruiters have yet again shown the incredible faith that is reposed by the legal industry in the potential of students passing out from NUJS.”
“A CRC is only as good as the students it is trying to place and the batch of 2012 ranks among the best NUJS has ever produced” they added.
The total number of placements so far in the class of 2012 represents the number that was placed in law firms participating in last year’s batch’s campus recruitment alone. The CRC for 2011 secured 18 additional jobs, besides 57 law firm jobs, for the batch of 2011.
While Amarchand and Luthra were the leading recruiters for NUJS last year as well, Khaitan which made nine hires from the class of 2011, made none from the class of 2012.

NUJS has their 5th year placements while NLS/NALSAR has their Day Zeros! Your question will be answered next year, this time.
And see the quality of placements for NUJS students:
Amarchand- 10 students
Luthra- 9 students
Trilegal- 5 students
AZB & Partners- 3 students
JSA- 2 students
Bharucha- 3 students
ICICI- 3 students
These are quality, top notch recruitments! Best of the best law firms and recruiters!
The NALSAR 2012 batch long back gave away all the figures and are done with it and have graduated. They don't like being stuck within 4 acres you see.
The best of the best have recruited from NUJS. 10 hires by Amarchand, 9 by Luthra, 5 by Trilegal and so many foreign firm placements!
What a laugh. LI should check to see how many of these types have actually done so in the last decade. Its becoming a euphemism for No Job. 57 out of 100 is awful considering the steep fee paid. Actually the effective placement is about 35 if you discount the "augustus law firm", "athena associates" and "tuli".
augustuslaw.com/
They didn't believe when we spoke of NALSAR being better. Now you see. NALSAR placed around 20 4th years while you're struggling with the 5th years. How awful! We pity you!
4th year guys- "20 of us got placed with Tier 1 firms..yay!..Whatsup with you?
5th yr - "Hmmmm..Well 30 of us placed and that's about it. I havent't made it to any firm. I think I should prepare for judiciary or civil services."
Now, whom are you talking about? Coz NALSAR placed everyone in their 5th year long long ago. (Half that batch was placed in their fourth year itself, on Day Zero)
41 out of 100 students of the 2012 Batch got placed on Day Zero.
Recruitment for the 4th years (entering 5th) is happening this month.
Yes.
Shame Shame Puppy Shame,
All the monkeys know your name
Or do they?
Augustus Law is the breakaway firm formed by two of the three partners of RDA Legal, Arindam Pal and Adwitiya Das. RDA Legal was formed a few months ago by Rohit Das, who left PXV to form a new firm under PXV's earlier brand name.
Seems like Rohit Das can't manage a team. First the split with PXV; now Augustus. The facts speak for themselves.
Yes it is true, Augustus came out of RDA, after Arindam Pal and Rohit Das originally wanted to start out together coming from PXV.
Best wishes,
Kian
NLU Jodhpur - Take over!
FACEPALM
Jodhpur, son, why don't you tell 'em how you have to make up those figures each year and wait until all the students have to secure the jobs themselves.
I can't decide which comment is more stupid... The one made by "Gone Case" or your response to it!
You guys seem to have all the experience in making up figures. Atleast detailed breakup toh de dete. Jodhpur placements have trumped yours this year accept it and move on.
Not one faculty member has left. Rumors were going around about certain [...] teacher (who is mother of studs, btw) and [...] teacher (yes, the hot one) leaving. But, obviously, these were only rumors. These teachers have confirmed there commitment to NUJS, and are staying for the years to come.
Prof. M. P. Singh's retirement was and is a sad news for NUJS. But make no mistakes, our new VC, though yet unsung, is as great as Prof. Singh. We miss Prof. Singh, yes; but Prof. Bhatt's appointment is only going to strengthen NUJS, not the opposite.
Smaller campus as compared to your's, yes, but we're not in some long lost part of nowhere. Your campus size includes sporting etc facilities; our's does not. For that we have SAI next to our campus, which has special arrangements with NUJS to provide sporting facilities at highly subsidized rates to NUJS's students. And it goes without saying that SAI provides more sporting facilities than what are available in your campus, or any other law school for that matter.
When we talk about infrastructure in law schools, we should primarily be talking about library facilities. We want better facilities in our hostel, but in its long existence, none of NUJS's students have had any complaints regarding library facilities. And I guess that's what really matters.
Our library is open from 6 AM to 2 AM; closes only for four hours, on average days. It starts to remain open 24 hours, 15 days before exams and remains so open throughout exams. Are you even allowed out of your hostel so late in the night? You'd be amazed to know the library timings of NLUD. We have the perfect library, as is your's, but more accessible.
MPL 3 Rankings. Bah, we had a bad season. Who cares? Even Sachin had a bad season, but he did come back right? We surely should have done better this season, but our performance wasn't disastrous. You should not "thoo!!" on our performance, we did not do that bad.
All I wanted to say is, NUJS is not going anywhere. We are here to stay. Lets not get into the slugfest please. NLS and NALSAR along with NUJS are world class institutions producing the best lawyers in the country. Even then, all of us still have a lot to achieve.
But that does not mean NUJS is going to die out. Students can still be brilliant. They still can force the new administration to change course and follow in prof. Singh's path. Yes, the future is not as bright as it would have been with Prof. Singh. But that does not mean NUJS can be written off that easily.
Dumbledore gone, Umbridge in... but Hogwarts will still come out on the top
You hear too many things, sir. Goes without saying, you hear it all wrong.
Where are you now ?
BTW, last time I heard, which was quite a long time back, his website was getting close to 4K hits a day. Not very bad, I say.
Aren't you the same guy. So now you read this, comment and defend yourself and like your own comment ?
Sad Days Maan.
I care so much, I really do! :(
Consider blogging huh??..good luck, looser!!
Which is so wrong!
57 out of 68 students have secured jobs. The remaining 32 are either doing LLMs from abroad, litigating or joining judicial services.
Please correct this blatant mistake.
As we've mentioned in the story, the 57 jobs secured were not all a result of the placement process. Some students had independently applied.
Figures on how many out of the 68 who participated in campus recruitment, are not available.
So it is indeed 57 out of 100, and not out of 68, that is of relevance here.
Best wishes,
Prachi
why an NUJS grad will become a CLAT coach or tutor? Better you remain unemployed, go for an LLM abroad or in India, prepare for judicial/civil services like many others or even join a local district court or high court lawyer even if without any penny. Don't waste your precious time and waste your career..do some meaningful work!
Again, CLAT Possible is a fraud. The claim that they are six years old is a lie. They were the LST franchise and later on Career Launcher franchise at Lucknow. In March 2010 they had a fallout CL and they started Team Satyam. TS has now been rebranded as Clat Possible. So, effectively, CP is just 2 years old and infact CL has launched legal proceedings against them.
And the NUJS guy recruited has been recruited as the legal head of CLAT Possible.
If I'm not wrong...they allegedly have copied their material from CLAT ESSENTIAL (3rd Yr NUJS student's Book)---- www.facebook.com/abhinav.nujs:
"You realise the value of your Current Affairs notes (AimCLAT) when you notice that your notes have been copied by a Coaching Institute (Team Satyam/CLAT POSSIBLE)"
...more so when these days CP only claim to fame is its GK faculty!!"
and ashwij Ramaiah was not only the student of LegalEdge but of 3-4 other coaching centress...so not all credit goes to harsh gagrani for his success.. but a big applause for producing a fantastic result in the first year itself..
I mean, really? NUJS is anyday anytime better than NLU-J.
NALSAR-NUJS still acceptable but Jodhpur.
Get a life people. Grow up and start facing the reality :)
No wonder your college is in KOLKATA you guys behave like Ganguly all the time trying to prove a point and defend your legacy when its a thing of the past.
Yes you did do good things in the past now its time for NLUJ and GNLU to FTW :-D
Well wisher!
What is the Day Zero scenario in NUJS like. Since it has not been reported I guess students will be in a better position to answer my query.
Thanks.
From what I heard, about 25 students got placed on Day Zero from NUJS 4th Year. The recruiters included AMSS, Luthra, Trilegal, JSA, Khaitan and ICICI. Not too sure about the individual break-up though, apart from AMSS, who've taken 12 including PPOs. Perhaps the LI team can seek info from the CRC?
