PXV founder, Khaitan associate partner Deepto Roy to join (Shardul) Amarchand

Roy
Roy
Khaitan & Co associate partner Deepto Roy will join the firm to be started by Amarchand Mangaldas Delhi partner Shardul Shroff in Mumbai.

According to four authoritative sources Roy has given his notice at Khaitan and is expected to join Shroff’s expecteded Mumbai operations soon.

He did not respond to a call seeking comment, while Rabindra Jhunjhunwala also did not respond to a message seeking comment.

We have reached out to Shardul Shroff for comment.

Roy joined Khaitan in August 2014 with two of his fellow co-founding partners of PXV Law Partners - Mohit Abraham and GT Thomas Phillippe - and eight associates.

Roy, who graduated in 2005, started PXV Law Partners with fellow NUJS Kolkata graduates Rohit Das, Pingal Khan, Philippe and Abraham in 2011.

He had begun his career at Amarchand Mangaldas Mumbai in 2005.

Roy will be the fourth Khaitan partner and third associate partner to have been snared by Shardul Shroff and his brother and current-co-managing partner Cyril in the break-up battle of Amarchand.

Legally India first reported yesterday that Iqbal Khan and Harsh Kumar, both associate partner at Khaitan, will join Shardul Amarchand and Cyril Amarchand respectively, other expected hires, subject to the close of mediation, include:

Team (Cyril) Amarchand Mangaldas (Delhi)Team (Shardul) Amarchand Manganldas (Mumbai)

Your comment is worth doing hahahaha on. Its seems pretty clear that you don't work in a law firm. Because there is hardly anything that you do in law firms which you get to learn in law schools.

Unless you are 'general corp' lawyer drafting advisory memos.

So i am trying to understand: Dipto has circled back from AMSS Mumbai to AMSS Mumbai only basically. Left Bombay, went to Delhi, came back to Bombay. Was there any specific reason he quit in the first place?

Maybe, just maybe, in the process of circling he was able to build his own clientele? Something he may not have been able to do at AMSS given that he would always be in someone's shadow. Now he's back with clients and will be able to be an effective rank equal rather than just being a named one. It's quite smart really.

Maybe because loyalty is something demanded by the Mafia and not a firm? Firms require people to do their work as long as there is a mutually beneficial interest for both the person who is working and the firm. If a person gets benefit elsewhere it is not disloyalty. Its merely being smart.

Firms aren't the Mafia. No one should be demanding loyalty.

Deepto is a super lawyer, I would easily say among the very best in my batch. Just take a quick look at the deals and clients he drew to PXV - no easy feat by any means. If equity is for people who are good and who can attract clients independently, he deserved it on day 1 at Khaitan. I hope he gets it now at SAM. All the best Deepto.

Not worth hiring unless it's one of the founders for their book of business or Nishant (and perhaps Yogesh as well) for good lawyering but with possibly smaller books. Anyway, none of these gents ain't going nowhere.

It's quite obvious why he quit. Look at the story on the KCO promotions. None of the PXX "partners" were promoted from associate partner to (normal) partner. It must have been heartburn for Dipto to be junior to Kumar Saurav and Joyjoti Misra, his batch mates.

Anyway all this jobhopping comes at a hidden price. Bosses know who have and who do not have reputations for being jobhoppers. Guess SAM would have factored that into his calculations. Dont be surprised if he quits again within 2 years to start P17 or P18

Boss, this big 4 type law firm business is too new in india for there to be a best type of partner profile. No big law firm in india can legitimately say that they have fully explored the indian market, as they are still expanding to tier 2 cities.

People who have worked at different places bring a lot of experience of dealing different kinds of clientale. They also bring a sense of professionalism, which this industry sorely needs instead of chamchagiri prevalent here.

Yes job hopping may have a minor price in terms of seniority. But you tell me. If deepto had continued in amss cam, would he have been closer to equity (given Santosh and Amey just became equity) than he currently will be with SAM. Then has he lost out on race?

Anyways, the real race is getting clients - nothing teaches you that better than being on your own.

Amarchand absorbed 8 from a lesser known mumbai law college-pgcl (you can independently verify from the placement committee) I really don't understand your attempt to belittle someone from glc or the firm's you mentioned in your mentioned in your comment. For all you know they (students from glc and people of firms you mention) might be really competent lawyers. Not all of them but couple of them were explicitly told they are being hired for associate designate. Care to verify before mudslinging? Any in any case it's besides the point. Comment was to disagree with belittling glc and firms mentioned for no good reason (or rather on assumptions which are doubtful) and yes the fact that people from pgcl have been placed has clearly not gone down well with you has it and do care to verify before commenting. Cour of them have been hired as associate designate (sure about this bit)

Really? Were you out of your mind or drunk when you posted that? I am key to highlight certain terms and offer my views on why your comment is so so stupid!!

"Ignorant Frustrated student" : I am from a top law school and in a top tier firm currently. Well I could have been a frustrated student, but then I guess my comment would have been against my college, than guiding/ advising you that you are dreaming to make it to Amarchand. Not to forget, begging anonymous people on LegallyIndia asking for the ID to apply to Amarchand. If you were good, Amarchand would have already approached you by now. GLC Grad is the one who looks frustrated on this website more than me asking for IDs. Well, about "Ignorant", it ain't me asking for law firm Id's out here!! Interesting that you mentioned about the "lesser known" PGCL college. They were ALL recruited in the TSG group. To know more about it, read the LI article 1-2 years back. They are NOT Associates of the firm and are paid lesser than half of the Associates. It is nice you prove yourself to be "ignorant" via your own comment!

"Some Law School": I am from one of the top NLU's.

"Verify from PGCL's placement committee": That's not MY job. I guess LI's job, but they have better things to report than a "lesser known law school" (as you put it).

"Have achieved nothing worth": Well I would be cursing my college AND Amarchand and other top firms if I achieved nothing worth. Not cursing lesser known colleges or GLC. It is because I have achieved something that I bothered to comment.

If you were a good lawyer with decent interpretation skills I guess you should have known the above and not wasted my time on either you or irrelevant colleges. I am not really sure about some of the people from some other colleges being really good lawyers, though I do not disagree, they might be. Life just gets a bit difficult and they have to prove themselves more than an NLU student. Apart from that, irrespective of the other lawyers, I am sure YOU are pathetic at what you do, if in fact you thought I am belittling someone because I am frustrated with my life and college. If I was, my comments would be targeted towards my alma mater and these firms, but not others.

Not waste your time? But you just did by your lengthy failed attempt. Achieved worthwhile? How come no one's bothered about tour existence and you are respected enough to be commenting behind the confines of Internet and do something worthwhile except for trying to belittle people I am still a first year law student and can tell you seem to be a very negative and frustrated person and I can bet no one likes to work with you

Lol.. Dhaval..please! Isn't he the same person responsible for Wadia's fate right now? Hasn't Wadia lost out recently ater Dhaval has been given charge? OMG!! Wadias downfall and how! We all know how bad Wadia has been doing recently... Well, to confirm, I have never given a Wadia interiew ever, but few guys at Amarchand have told me about Wadias recruitment process. It is more about proving to the junior that the partner is smarter than a junior!! Those same guys who failed Wadia made it to AMSS (Amarchand) at an even rigorous process. At Wadia, the Partner only tries to prove he is smarter. They have less or none from top NLU's. AMSS tested their knowledge and aptitude more than ego on 3-4 rounds and proving Partners of Wadia are superior. What does Wadia have? The remainder of GLC and some PGCL articles? The reason their salaries have been reduced too? Disparity between corporate and litigation salaries? Mentioning Dhaval here was a "pair pe kulhadi maarna" situation.. either you are a glc pgcl junior or an article intern there who does not know how bad Wadia has been doing recently. Your name suggests you are an article. Trying to impress your bosses to offer you a job if you do not clear Sols?

This entire emphasis on college is overstated. Good lawyers existed before NLS and will exist even after. A good law school will only give u a decent head-start -- but that's no way going to ensure where u end up as a lawyer. That will depend on the person concerned, how well she applies himself and the opportunities she gets. The best litigators of our times are not from law schools. Ask any partner or sr advocate - the real learning starts after law school.
Few points 15 Apr 2015, 05:48
+2 -0
I would agree with the view that a law school is not where you become a "lawyer". National law schools probably serve the same purpose as B Schools. From my experience the best takeaway from law schools are the friends you make, the networks you build for the future and the opportunities you get. Law school students are usually motivated and ambitious and that can have a positive effect on other students which collectively catapults the entire lot to reach for higher goals. To become a lawyer, maybe law firms should collectively start something like the accelerated "LPC" offered by UK law firms.
