Sujit Ghosh, the co-founding partner of two best friends of major consultancies - BMR Legal and most recently Advaita Legal - is set to leave the firm soon, we have learned.
Ghosh, the Delhi-based managing partner of Advaita who has also become an avid arguing counsel, is understood to intend to transition to becoming an arguing counsel full-time.
Ghosh had set up Advaita in 2013 with former KPMG partner Sunil Moti Lala.
The firm functioned as a quasi-best-friend of Big 4 global consultancy KPMG, in India.
His Advaita co-founder Moti Lala went independent as a tax counsel and advocate in 2015, starting SML Tax Chamber.
However, late last year, Seth Dua & Associates co-founder Atul Dua had joined Advaita with around 20 lawyers, after Dua’s co-founding partner Sunil Seth had died in February 2017.
Ghosh is the latest in a long series of law firm senior partners who have foregone the law firm life, potentially for the life of an independent counsel.
Considering how much senior counsel charge, even leveraged senior equity partnership at law firms often can’t keep up.
Plus it can be a lot more complicated to administer, run and grow a law firm compared to being independent.
Ghosh is a 1995 NLSIU Bangalore graduate. He had begun his career at Arthur Andersen.
In 2002 he left for Ernst & Young, and in 2004 joined BMR Advisors as a partner. In 2010, he had set up its legal arm BMR Legal.
He specialises in indirect tax and like most senior tax practitioners also argues before high courts and tax tribunals, which can make his transition to becoming full-time counsel fairly easy.
We have reached out to Ghosh and Dua for comment.

The remaining ones are those who are already in their second innings (and few on the verge of retirement itself). Do not expect them to willingly take up the pressures of managing a law firm and ensuring work inflow.
This may as well be a slow death if not an immediate one.
Atul has always run profitable practices and can certainly turnaround Advanta into a profitable practice. By the way, till now Advantage has not been profitable.
Taking Atul was part of the transition plan of Advanta. It's actually the fact.
Atul can certainly lead this firm. I think it was the plan. as Bar and Bench say Vijay Aggarwal had retired and Satyajit was exited. ALSO Atul has led many big 4 practices in the past. put on legally India;
