We want LI to be one of the friendliest places on the internet, where lawyers and law students help each other with their career related queries and occasionally discuss other stuff that might affect their lives too. In other words:
1. Be kind, respectful and helpful to each other.
2. Be bona fide, truthful, genuine and curious.
3. Assume the best intention of others.

Switching teams Iβm assuming wouldnβt be as hard as switching firms or practice areas.
After this there was a challenge in Supreme Court (filed very late by UGC - 9 months after the divison bench order) and NUJS said it will wait for SC order before giving certificates.
Now SC has dismissed the SLP by UGC, and upheld HC order.
Why is NUJS still not issuing a certificate to me? I wrote mails to the VC and the registrar, there was no response.
I have filed a contempt petition before Calcutta HC, but the hearing did not happen since 5 months as the bench has been separated and one of the judges is now posted in Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Do I have to wait till the judge returns to Kolkata for contempt petition to be heard before I can get my certificate?
or can I file a fresh writ before HC?
Why is NUJS doing this travesty of justice. There are clear court orders, why can't a premier law university follow the law? Why do we have to fight to get our rights in courts @ every step?
Have we not suffered enough?
Agree to rest bit of it, but again, if you hit the tier-1s, you'll have the same WLB as you peers from the other states, at least in KCo. :)
My senior had basically told me "there's nothing you can do to a case that I won't be able to rescue it, so it's fine". It helped build the courage needed.
Build that kind of a safe workplace that encourages your juniors to learn & grow. They'll stay.
Considering this, how difficult is it to crack CAT, and is it a viable career option for lawyers if they do not enjoy their work?
The title should be GNLU vs Rest of the world.

Please pitch in guys.
I'll go first:

So the obvious question the. is whether associates are underpaid?
If IISc has a law school, who will even talk about NLS and other state NLUs? As an example, IISc Medical School will start operating from 2025 (https://medicine.iisc.ac.in/). IISc Law School (should it happen) will be in a different league altogether.
I am someone who is aspiring to do CA . I would love to talk one on one with you. How should we get connected?
NUJS (Has the best placement record amongst other NLUs).
GNLU
NLUJ (Used to be ahead of GNLU, but their placements have been abysmal for the Batch of 24 and also, they now have a domicile quota).
NLIU
Jindal
HNLU/NLUO (NLUO has a slightly better placement record).
Symbiosis Pune
This is the ranking order and do not tamper with it. NUJS is still one of the best institutions in the country. In every parameter, it's far ahead of NLIU: better placement record, more Rhodes Scholars (NLIU has none), better faculty, and most importantly, better student quality. Yes, NLIU has a better campus, but what are you going to do with that? You're there to study, get a job, and hone your skills. Choose NUJS, and I am from neither of these institutions, hence no bias. NLIU technically is below GNLU and NLUJ now; their reputation is already tarnished with the amount of scandals that have happened there, including fake degrees though it's still a T1 NLU and surprisingly, batch of 24 managed to do well in NLIU as most of them got placed.
GNLU has a better placement record, more number of Rhodes Scholars, a better campus, and way more chill admins, which gives you a lot of time to do your things. NUJS is still way ahead of GNLU. In terms of everything, they are ahead, so be wise, choose NUJS and do not temper with the preferences.
The top firms (KCO SAM) pay almost at par with the other offices although you can expect a pay cut of 10%. I personally would not mind that because your net income is a measure of your disposable income and Kolkata is a much cheaper city to live in by all standards. Further, work is not crushing so you get all the WLB you need, which really makes up for that 10% cut and more. Which would you rather have? 30k/year more or the time to spend with your family at vacation spots at least once a year?
For firms that are slowly making a name in the corporate space, (except HSA because the good Lord and the partners are the only one who knows what is going on with that place. Besides they only seem to have a B&F practice) expect a pay of 2.4-4 LPA for Gen Corp and M&A. That said, M&A does not happen in Kolkata much, so the umbrella term Gen Corp would also include a LOT of Real Estate work.
For firms like Fox and Mandal (both brothers), Victor and Moses and Sinha and other 'heritage' firms, expect a salary band that matches with their 'heritage of not paying our juniors even the basis sustainable salary'.
Litigation prospects in the city is a farce even though we have Cal HC. That said, you can strike gold (well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but lead is also high priced) if you venture into litigation prospects of NDPS and Bail matters. Its easier to transition to greener pastures in these lines (IMO. I am open to being corrected if I have said anything that hurts you or is not a true picture of the profession). Personally, people who work at lower courts seem to have a better time than people working in HCs. There is a dearth of good lawyers in Labour Tribunals among other Tribunals and you could look into this avenue as well.
Salary range in litigation- Expect a pay from 5-8k at the worst. 20k at the best as a A0-A2.
Salary range in corporate law firms- 10-25k.
Salary range in corporate in-house- 30-40k but intakes are very few every year. That said, Cognizant does hire every year through a walk in interview for contract management roles and life is pretty chill (as per the friends I have there).
Anything else you can add or share or ask, feel free to type away :)
Top 5 ranking now: NLSIU>NLUD>NALSAR>NUJS>GNLU
Top 5 ranking 10-20 years from now: NLSIU>NLUD>NALSAR>GNLU>JGLS or MNLU-M
Is there such preference or nepotism in NLUs for selection of PhDs ? Why then give chance to outsiders when they only want to select their own alumni?
Our initial batch of 10 was reduced to 2 since others left during training or even before that. Couldn't handle the grind or had different ideas about how things would be.
Listen OP. Getting in is a bit tough. Since SSB is unlike any other competitive exam. It's a personality based exam & therefore you can't be a 100% certain you'll clear it despite preparing beforehand. But it's definitely something I would recommend going through for the experience.
Second, a lot of people have the misconception that since you're an advocate in the army you will not be subject to the daily routines of army. That's where they are wrong. Irrespective of whether you're a lawyer or engineer. You will always be a soldier first. Therefore, initially you will be subject to the same training and experience in the academy that others go through. There will be no exception. Only benefit is that your training is for a year, not more.
Third, discipline is the key to the organisation. For some people who have not lived that life, it does become hard with the RoPs & SoPs to follow. I literally saw a GC question/argue as to why we have to salute a senior & say Jai Hind.
Fourth, you will be attached with a forward unit initially, i.e. posted in the field, but that's for a short duration. Later on you will have posting in much better peaceful places. But if you love the physical grind and have age by your side, you can definitely try for the para/special forces.
Five, you will definitely be set for life with the retirement pension, medical support and canteen facilities. Plus the honour of wearing a uniform. The benefits are definitely worth it.
Six, you should definitely try, if you want. However don't have lofty ideals. In the end, it's an organisation and JAG is not the top most unit when it comes to unsaid customary hierarchy. It's more like an added service.
Seven, even if you get through, it's a short service and if you feel like leaving, you can chose not to opt for permanent commission. The experience in army will boost your CV & will give you 5 year exemption in lots of competitive exams. I've had batchmates leave & go join the courts, do an MBA abroad, IIMs, one even cracked the civil service exam with the exemption. Upto you.
All in all. It's a great service to be a part of. All the best.
As you are middle class, aim 99 percentile LSAT score and study with 75% tuition fee scholarship in all 5 years. You have two chances in January and May LSAT exam.
For instance, IJAL by NLUJ for arbitration has a pretty good reputation both in India and abroad and it accepts student submissions.
1. Itβs a government job.
2. Itβs a job that has a very fixed remit in terms of the sort of matters you deal with.
That said, if you do want to cruise through life and make a decent fist of it, I would recommend the JAG. Good postings, little to no work pressure, army benefits without the real edge of life stuff you may encounter in other units (lesser respect in the forces as a result).
If you really want to have some fun, I would recommend Navy JAG. Even better postings on offer than fauj.
I come from a fauji family, work in the corporate sector, and have more than three friends who ended up in JAG.
Please donβt deliberately seek out a high stress/toxic team, you may appreciate everything that comes after it because your standards would be on the floor, but the physical and psychological set back would be immense. Getting put through the wringer can impair you and your confidence, which is perhaps one of the most important factors to survive in this space.
Suffering does not always equal growth.
βThe same water that softens the potato, hardens the eggβ
so no, not quite "3 or 4"
When will women's rights in India witness such a push? When will our PM push for closing the gender pay gap?
Avoid if you're not from an NLU. First level up with a decade in lower court and high court chamber practice if you're from an NLU background. Even Havard lalams with NON-NLU background don't survive the rigours of an Amarchand without initial, decades woth chamber grounding. Exceptions make the rule.
Is it AC?
Now this wouldn't be a problem but most of the kids in my class have people referring them and it's annoying to work hard and see people not doing anything for 3 years and then randomly start Interning at the best firms. Like what even is that.
