Lol, in metric like faculty publications and research, NUJS has left NLUD behind long back, after most of the star faculty of NLUD left already. Neither in placement nor in student achievements, NLUD came even close. Other than location advantage, it does not have anything to show right now.

See, they how faculties from top institutions of the world. The expectation there is different- yeah one semester, 2 or 3 classes a week and you're done. You can devote more time for other things. In India, NLS offers the best on paper- just 6 hours of teaching in a week plus 2 hours of office hours + meetings and institutional work. Compared to other uni in India, it's not much. But the expectation is to give your best and when you compare it to best of the world, it seems bad.

As for why many left, a few of them take up academia as a trial- if they can work out not.

Why can't NLSIU retain so many of the good people they have hired in the recent years? What exactly are they doing wrong? It's a brutal market if you are bootstrapped, GPT and claude are getting accurate in citation and hallucinations have gone considerably down. other than lucio and jurisphere (which is doing human contract review in US market), other smaller indie legaltech startup in India are dying as well.

I'm entering my third year of law school and have found myself at a crossroads. Initially, my profile was more dispute resolution-oriented, but over the past few months I've deliberately shifted towards technology law and data privacy because that's where my genuine interest lies. I've been pursuing relevant certifications, writing on the DPDP Act, and applying for technology/privacy-focused internships.

However, many of my batchmates have already interned at firms like Dhir & Dhir, Dua Associates, Hammurabi, Khurana & Khurana, etc. While I know everyone's journey is different, it's made me wonder whether I'm putting myself at a disadvantage by not focusing on more traditional law firm internships.

My long-term goal is not to build a career at a law firm. I'm more interested in data privacy roles, particularly in-house or with organisations like EY, Deloitte, or similar consulting firms. My current plan is to gain one or two strong law firm internships (preferably in technology law/privacy) and then focus primarily on in-house or consulting internships aligned with data privacy.

For those working in technology law, data privacy, or in-house legal roles, does this seem like a coherent path? Or would you recommend spending more time building a traditional law firm profile first?

I'd really appreciate any insights from practitioners or those who have followed a similar path.

Buddy, stop living in denial. NUJS as an institution isn’t comparable to NLUD in any metric. A top 2 NLU in both the NIRF and QS, and definitely never going to be displaced by NUJS, but come placement season, Noojies flood this site with their top 3 claims. Unlike NUJS, NLUD hasn’t degraded academic standards and doesn’t allow students to intern all year round to get placed.

Here is the honest take: Most of them struggle to find a good job straight out of law school and starts preparing for govt exams. Some of them do end up clearing good exams, others end up in some chambers or small in house. However, in the long run, Grades stop mattering that much and the work experience is what dictates their growth.

The fact remains the only thing of value that another firm would “acquire” is the tax practice that is market leading built by RS & the brand ELP which is derived from the value of the tax practice.

Everything else trade, litigation, corporate etc you can just acquire-hire at higher salary.

Sociology was meant to complement economics by researching into issues like how government policies are working on the ground, what problems are faced by rural communities in areas like health, education etc. Instead, it’s become a farce. As others have said, direct terminations are rare, but watch your back during probation. Few years back, confirmation was almost automatic, but now partners won't think twice about extending probation. Needless to say that's a strong signal that you are being eased out. After probation, it's a bit tougher to kick someone out, but they way it's often done is by making the person's life so miserable that they quit themselves. This could look as varied as reducing interaction and workload to make the individual feel redundant, overburdening them with work to set them up for failure, treating them with disdain and hostility on a daily basis, or a combination of any of these. Bottomline - T1s know how to show someone the door when they have to, more so in recent years than ever before.

It's fairly quick. You apply to some particular mail id, interview is scheduled within 2 days and you get to know within 3-4 days if you've got in. My interview did not go well so I didn't make it. Thankfully, just a day before, I had given an interview for an NLU and that went well.

I travelled all the way for the exam and interview of Infosys Protege. Not worth it if you are away from the exam and interview centers. Other Candidates were telling that there are 2000 or more applications for this job. And they will hardly take 5 to 10 candidates as Lawyers. Easier to individually apply somewhere because that has more chances of you getting in. You will end up wasting money and a lot of time. Wish some rounds were online or they reimbursed the travel expenses.
