1. When you receive any files check whether all pages are there, they are legible etc

2. Learn to bookmark pdf files. This helps a lot when you are dealing with large files. It will save you a lot of time and impress your seniors while briefing them

3. Drafting will come over time. Don't stress it but at the same time try going over as many drafts as possible available in your office and try to understand the style of what is expected. You can use chatgpt but it shouldn’t show and also PLEASE verify the citations.

4. Learn to use SCC/manupatra/HC websites/ecourts. Especially helps when you want to understand whether a precedent has been overruled/followed/dissented etc. learn how to check whether HC order/judgement has been challeneged.

5. For those HCs which dont have live streaming - carry a diary/piece of paper on which you write in a few lines what happened in the matter, next date etc. for T1 clients this helps making client updates which your partner will hound you about

6. DO NO ATTEND CONFERENCES WITHOUT READING THE MATTER. No matter how junior you are, now you are expected to read the matter. Even if there are seniors on your team, prepare the matter so that you can step up if required. And trust me, it is noticed.

7. Download bare acts from SCC/manupatra. What i have found is most of the time they are up to date but some acts like the Income Tax Act which is amended yearly was not up to date but that is an exception. Point is that use up to date bare acts so you dont end up looking like an idiot. Also for state bare acts, run a google search to see if you’re missing any amendments because these are not updated periodically

8. If you’re assisting your partner/SA/Counsel in court have all relevant pages handy + print outs available if required to show the Court. Same applies to judgements etc.

9. Try becoming friendly with the court masters/registry if you go to particular courts. Initially all will seem distant but overtime they will help you out in exchange for (obv ₹₹₹). But what people dont understand is you cant just walk up to them with 500 and say do this. There has to be a relationship.

10. Keep a worksheet of the matters you work on from day 1. Whether it is research, drafting, preparing a matter etc as this will help you update your CV when you plan to leave. After 3-4 years no one remembers all matters they did unless they spent a good amount of time.

not a bad idea, I have seen people do this many a time. Some even go for a masters if there's any particular area of law that highly interests them, maybe you could consider that a year from now as well.

Also, mind sharing what's your pay like and which industry is the company based in?

The only time you are standing or walking in litigation is during Court hours. You spend rest of the time drafting, filing or briefing seniors - so you will be required to sit for long intervals.

As for freedom with small breaks - it really depends on finding the optimal chamber for your needs and wants. Its really a matter of luck because most chambers come with their own drawbacks.

That's more or less been the case throughout the years. Especially since when they started relying upon their legacy instead of their own achievements. The earlier batches had been arrogant too, say before 2015-16, but they had the substance to back it up. That's no more the case.

Agree with the general point of the post and most of the deets. A few corrections.

A. PWD means the university did not hold a tender at all. Since technically it represents state government, hence it doesn't have to be awarded through tender. This is state PWD, which is even worse in terms of efficiency and charges way more.

B. Who are these LLM students who are teaching?

C. Faculty sensitisation won't help with the marks. In law, one cannot expect to score 90 out of 100. Too much subjectivity. This isn't science. The ten pointer scale was itself faulty. A MAKAUT tech guy had suggested that, who has since then been removed from the VC position even there.

D. Most important point, students are the main sufferers under his rule. Why aren't they protesting? Why aren't the alumni banding together like NLSIU alumni to push for a good VC? If they accept him meekly, why will the state bother?

Hi guys, I'm a recent A1 at a Teir 1 in Cap Marks. I see that this is the only team majorly working around the clock all the time. Other teams have this pressure but it's not all-year round. Given the boom in the market, all firms are taking more and more transactions and there is no firm left which genuinely focuses on learning and growth. The seniors do not have a personal life and when you ask them if they want to do this, they say that they're stuck in this and it's too late to get out as this is a niche area.

I wanted to know if I should switch now so that I don't make the same mistakes my seniors did and if so are there any other practice areas at Teir 1 firms with reasonable work hours and expectations (obviously there may be waves of bad times as long as it is not perpetual). It would be great if I could get inputs from people at different practice areas at various T1s.

How can you even compare ELP and Poovayya / Lall & Sethi? While both are very respectable firms, ELPs tax team alone would be larger than both of them combined.

Most people on here are so blinded with M&A/PE/Corp that that seems to be the only relevant metric for Tier 1/2 classifications. But if you look at Tax, which is a very large and very lucrative practice, ELP & LKS are the two undisputed Tier 1 firms. That house was built on RS’ shoulders, without him there would be no ELP.

It is what it is. Even UK has some exceptional law schools which churn out far better students than our Tier-1 slot. But recently, the hiring (only in UK) has increased a bit, partly because the toppers in every NLU (well till NLIU/GNLU) are doing smart work. So the situation has gotten better, if you compare the stats.

One explanation I got was that, foreign forms especially in the US, already get excellent lawyers from their ivies, cause let’s be honest, they are much more well trained than us, where the main subject is STEM.

But what about U.K. and Singapore? Even they hardly a single/or maximum 2-3 offers to our domestic students and that too, who have exceptionally performed in their academics, publications and foreign moots. Why don’t these jurisdictions hire in bulk?

Since NKC started his tenure, NUJS is on a constant downfall. There is rampant construction all around the tiny 5 acre campus which has led to the extinction of green cover in the campus, apart from destroying the minimal amount of public spaces that students had. The same construction has been going on for multiple amount of years while the deadline has passed way back, along with the tender going to the least efficient department i.e., PWD, with the cooperation of which NKC must be minting millions. The introduction of the BSc batch is a disaster in itself, where the fees of the newly introduced batch is close to double while they are being taught by sub-par faculty, some of whom are currently pursuing LLM at NUJS and are not even experienced professors. The implementation of the program was never thought about, which has led to the students of the existing B.A Llb program to suffer. NKC was confronted by the student body prior to the introduction of the BSc batch regarding their prospects in the corporate sphere and the assistance NUJS would provide as an institution to aid the same. However, NKC outrightly denied any assistances, citing that the program is a specialisation in the field of forensic science. However, after the admission of two batches since the introduction of the program, his stance has conveniently changed when it came to forming the Recruitment cell for the new program, putting the students of the prevailing B.A batch at a disadvantage by increasing the batch size by almost 2 times, and the number of opportunities being the same. Not only has he spoilt the future of the recently admitted batches, he had already endangered the careers of the batches of 2025 and 2026, by putting in place an arbitrary grading scale out of 10. Little did he know that he would have to also sensitise the faculty who had to mark these students according to the new 10-pointer scale, while they continued to mark them according to the old 7-pointer scale, leaving the batch topper of these batches to attain a maximum CGPA of 7.5 out of 10 because the criterion to achieve the highest grades was 95 out of 100, while the teachers barely awarded 70-80 marks to even the highest scoring student in that subject. He soon after realised that this would affect the image of the institution as a whole before the law firms, and more importantly. premium institutions abroad whose screening criteria requires students to have minimum CGPA OF 6 or 7, which is unattainable for the students of Batch of 2025 and 2026 due to the high benchmark set and the lack of sensitisation of faculty. Later, he had to change the threshold for the highest grades from 95 to 80, which is closer to the threshold of 75 that was used in the 7-pointer scale, to which the professors were accustomed to. Other ancillary aspects like lack of reimbursements for moots and ADR competitions, lack of sporting and medical facilities, arbitrary medical leave policy, and multiple attempts to derail the academic quality of the institution by replacing eminent professors with “Teaching Assistants” and numerous other things, have put the student body at a major disadvantage and the same has taken a large toll on their mental health and academic performance. It is high time that the administration starts looking for his replacement at the earliest, keeping in mind the UGC mandated age bar of 70 years which he is about to breach, to save the integrity of the institution.

Had the misfortune of interacting with certain members of the batch of 2027 at NLSIU at a certain event, a few months ago. Needless to say, they are so arrogant, follow a herd mentality, and are generally rather rude. Anyone else (those in NLS or outside) see this pattern too?

Should NLU students seize on this demand? Because a large chunk of NLU students belong to these communities and they live in terrible hostel conditions, while receiving no financial support.

I know LLM from India Doesn’t matter a lot etc etc etc. But want to Honest opinion about LLM from these NLUs. Also if someone can help that in which college does have better hold over tech and privacy laws. Like HNLU and NUJS does have a separate stream for these laws.

Don't worry too much about a college bag, though. Everyone has their preference. Some carry tote bags from Sarojini, and some show up with a backpack stuffed to the brim with every book and bare act. Whereas many people just don't even use bags, they just carry a single notebook or their laptops/iPads to class.

A good old backpack from Amazon with a laptop sleeve will suffice at the end of it all. If your budget allows: Daily objects backpacks. Great quality and design. Nice to carry during internships too. Mokobara is great too, but it is quite expensive.
