A relevant post. Rankings change with time. In 2010, the top5 ranking would have been NLSIU>NUJS>NALSAR>NLUJ>NLIU. In 2025, it is NLSIU>NLUD>NALSAR>GNLU>NLUJ. In terms of tiers, only NLSIU is truly tier 1 now. NALSAR and NLUD are tier 1.5. GNLU, NLUJ, NUJS, NLIU and JGLS are tier 2. Rest are tier 3 and lower.

NUJS has enough hostels for its students. It also has better faculty than NLUJ and GNLU, better alumni connect because of the age and certainly better environment than those two to do research and pursue alternative careers, which its students have been doing since the last decade extensively. As for your political opinion about the state of West Bengal, Rajasthan sees Dalits being killed for daring to call an upper caste child Beta and the less said about Gujarat in most social metrics, the better. However, NLSIU, NLUD and NALSAR are definitely the top 3 based on all collective parameters, despite NLUD having lost most of its good faculty lately. In fact, NLSIU despite its increasing batch size has soared ahead of the other two on the benchmark of faculty and admin alone.

Look I know the college is conventionally between NALSAR/NLUD and NLUJ but the hostel situation and campus size alone would be a deal breaker for me anywhere else but yeah I am kinda scared of Kolkata, ▮▮▮

That aside, it is still a top 4 at least in terms of academics. I do respect any alumni and faculty there as it still requires a fair bit of excellence and courage to go there

If you are an alumnus of any of the colleges, mentioned then you need to move on to other things instead of being obsessed with your college and trying to bring down others.

If you are a student in any of the institutions mentioned then focus on stuff that matters instead of rankings and stupid competitions.

Doesn’t matter, the kids are doing far better than their NUJS counterparts even without the aid of some top level alumni favouring them in firm placements. The college itself is run far more efficiently without any pointless state domicile and paid NRI quotas and whatnot. And being in Delhi, good faculty will naturally be attracted to it in the coming years so a few folks leaving won’t hurt it much. On the other hand, no one would want to live in Kolkata. So, in every sense, NLUD is far better than NUJS.

How are the kids doing better than their NUJS counterparts exactly? Not in placements, not in higher studies with scholarships, not in policy bodies. Good faculty being attracted to NLUD hasn't happened in the last four years. As for Delhi, it sure has its advantages, but you need to have a death wish too in terms of environment and safety issues alone.

These are the only colleges where you can make it to corporate and t-1 law firms if you work enough.

Don't go beyond this. You can consider JGLS/ Symbiosis Pune/ GLC after the top 10 NLUs. If money is a problem then after RMLNLU you can start considering the private ones.

I am not going to contribute to any tier listing bs, but here are some factors I considered when I chose to go to a T2 NLU instead of Jindal (which my family could afford, so I made the consideration on the merits of each institution).

- Alumni, where are they working, are there many people are senior roles at law firms, in house etc?
- Placements percentages according to how many students are there in the batch, where people are being placed
- Speak to students are the institutions you are considering and let them tell you the present ground reality, what is shown on linkedin is very different from things irl - I spoke to people at my NLU and JGLS when I was deciding, which helped.
- Seeing if the students are mooting, publishing, etc actively- reflects a certain culture in the college

There wont be any one size fits all uni for everyone, please dont let silly considerations like its a small town or "i dont like the political party in that state" be the reason you chose deny yourself a quality education that can help you build a quality career path. College matters, be mindful when considering the place you chose to spend your five years.

After researching a lot keeping in mind corporate placement and the year of establishment ,aluminium base, judiciary culture. HONEST RANKING BY SEEING THE UPCOMING 5 YEARS POTENTIAL.

1.Nlsiu (not doing good but still oldest/ increase intake will.also affect in future).

2. Nalsar (only 100 percent placement provider nlu)

3.Nlud (locational advantage/judiciary/upsc)

4.NUJs (alumin/ constant growth grap its old that's why it's maintaining it's plaxe)

5.GNLU(highest growing nlu came late in 2007 than also defeating each nlu one by one with highest in numbers placement 117 out of 120 in 2024 (no other nlu has provided 100 + placement)

6. NLUJ ( A GOOD NLU stable and tier 1)

TIER 1.5

7.NLIU Bhopal ( detoriating condition being tier 1 earlier and second oldest nlu got displaced)

8.Nluo cuttack (following the trajectory of gnlu growth it's 2023 2024 2025 placements speaks for itself , soon to be tier 1 college tag)

TIER 2

9.Hnlu raipur (stagnant college in growth rate)

10.Mnlu Mumbai (glorified nlu/locational advantage)

11.Rmnlu lucknow (judiciary enthusiast/ decent placement)

NluO never releases the data in the form like in which firms their students are placed , they don't even release post about it on linkdin and all . They just provide the numbers of their placements, how can we trust that ? Also we get mnlu m till 600 rank in counselling, hnlu till 900s and NLUO till early 1200s isn't it is strange that in fastest growing nlu quality of crowd is not that good ?

See the cutoff of this year....is 950 nearby of nluo and 900 of hnlu because nluo has more open seats and also mnlu cutoff is only 600 because it has very few general seats. And rank difference of 300 is not a big deal it's fact of the d day 2 marks difference doesn't define someone worth and potential it depends upon the hard work. Also nluo placement detail is given in bar and bench as well.its official site .

No im.not from nluo and I had kept nliu over nluo only. Talking about old thing yeah alumin is one of the factor but not solely main factor. I have kept nluo above hnlu as of placement thing. Also if alumini factor and establishment year were ti be the main factor than gnlu would not in top 4 as it was established in 2007

really looks like you have no idea what you are talking about. Alumni base matters a lot - have you seen GNLU's alumni base and its forward thinking administration and peer group has created multiple tier 1 partners and foreign law firm partners. Also about NLUO over HNLU, who are you kidding!! HNLU is far better in placement, although on the face of it you might see and think that NLUO is better but that is because they include everything under the sun as a placement even when you go practice in a chamber (papa ka chamber i joined ahah) or a fellowship a student gets on his own, while HNLU only considers law firm placements. If you do a law firm placement comparison HNLU is far ahead in quality as well as quantity.

There are only three real outcomes that are worth considering when you talk about ranking colleges. It honestly doesnt matter what infra is like or if students enjoy hostel food. That stuff might be an inconvenience in the short term, but you forget about it once you graduate. Here are the three things that matter:

1) Graduate outcomes: What percentage of graduates from the last three batches have gotten jobs they are relatively pleased with within 6 months of graduating? This should be the first thing you consider. Honestly, you could live in AC rooms on a campus that has Olympic-size pools, equestrian sports, and a helipad-—what difference does it make to you? Is the university enriching itself or is it actually providing value to you?

2) Faculty quality and rigor—even if you don't have good graduate outcomes now, if you have decent faculty and a high standard for academic work, within the next five years your university can improve enough that you will be employable. And find your way in the law world eventually. Count the student-teacher ratio in faculty quality. How likely are you to be taught by faculty who can make a call and get you a job?

3) Peer quality-—Even if graduate outcomes are bad and faculty are bad and there's no rigor, will you be surrounded by enough driven people that will keep you on your toes and challenge you and will work with you so you leave school knowing the law and having some idea of how to navigate the real world?

This is literally all that matters. The city, size of the college, how wealthy the students are, sex ratio, moot court wins, hostel rooms, food—all of that doesn't count for anything really unless you have at least one of these other three. There are plenty of people in Delhi who go to colleges where they get none of these things—but they might get access to the big city, they might be wealthy, and they might even get good infrastructure—it doesn't matter at all—they don't get jobs, they don't advance in their careers, and eventually they can't hack it in the legal world. I've seen NLUs where they don't have these three criteria and they sell themselves on infrastructure or on one team recently winning one moot—infrastructure doesn't follow you once you leave the university, and one team winning a moot somewhere doesn't actually mean some good work is being done at the university that you can benefit from. It might simply be that the team is well-connected or fortunate. Besides, moots don't lead to jobs unless you win a big international one. Many private universities spend a lot on infrastructure up front because they know they will make the money back by charging exorbitant fees to parents who assume "big building/campus = serious education project." If you go to a university to visit and theyre selling you on infra- big red flag. Consider that youre paying for all of that and consider if the ROI is there.

It seems to me that people know so little about how higher education works, and parents and prospective students are so ill-prepared that they don't have the first idea what they're looking at and are clueless when they're being sold a bill of goods.

Big caveat: this answer assumes you want to be a lawyer and are middle class/unconnected. If you don't really care about being a lawyer, or your dad is already someone big who can assure you employment, go waste your money wherever you want; who even cares?
