Hi guyss, I am a recent grad and I have received an assessment internship opportunity with Surana & Surana at their Chennai Office. I know about the pay during the Assessment Internship, but I'm not quite sure about the pay once it gets converted to a full time role, which i hope I'll make through.

NUJS would be ranked horribly. The number of misogynists on campus is alarming. A visiting faculty member from King’s College London, who had come here in good faith, was subjected to vile abuse, including shockingly misogynistic and xenophobic slurs, in the middle of the night. The experience was so traumatic that she left the very next day. What’s more disturbing is that instead of being held accountable, the perpetrator was subsequently elevated to a position of greater power by the SJA. Disgusting.

I think it's disturbing how NUJS is the only Tier 1 law school which tries to hide its placement figure from the public. Apparently, he RCC repeatedly informs the batch not to release any information, and has even brutally punished those they suspected of releasing this information.

Every other law school provides a timely placement report upon the batch graduating, while NUJS hasn't released one for the past two years. The NUJS RCC needs to rethink their approach, this opaqueness does not inspire confidence and only makes it seem like NUJS has weaker placements than they want you to believe.

I’m sure this was shared with good intentions, but posts like this (whether accurate or exaggerated) —especially without the employee’s own voice—can sometimes do more harm than good. In small legal circles, 'gossip' spreads quickly, and this could inadvertently hurt the employee further or even affect the firm’s reputation. It's important to be careful, even when trying to help.

Once you start practicing in this area, you will become Anti-SEBI for sure. Lmao.

Bombay is the best place to start. Choose your guns wisely. Question yourself, do you want to practice under an advocate or be a brief counsel for the rest of your life? Mostly, the T1 law firms' Partners in this practice do not appear before the SAT directly. It's always the stalwarts who handle these cases. The T1 partners only act as briefing counsels.

The law firms itself mostly handle SEBI AO and WTM proceedings. The big guns come to play when it comes to appellate jurisdiction. Matters can at times get very mundane, with only the data and clients changing. But hey, it's the case with every practice. But securities practice gives you a two-way benefit - a test of transaction/commercial advisory (with respect to SEBI regulations) and full-blown litigation/adjudication. It's a niche practice area and does not scope beyond Bombay, so choose wisely.

MDP Legal, Khaitan & Co, Trilegal, Bombay Law Chambers, AZB Partners, Law Point - are some of the known faces in the securities practice circuit. (No Regstreet is not one of them. At least personally, I would not consider them, because they mostly act as solicitor, they just act as a middleman for the client and the lawyer/firm that would be appearing on behalf of the client.)
Joby is great for on hand experience. Shruti is an amazing multitasker, and I think she is one of the few T1 partners who plead themselves before the SAT. Don't know much about Prakash Shah, but he is listed with most matters.

I attended an interview at R K Dewan chennai office, and I've been offered with an assessment internship for a period of 2 months which will be unpaid. After which I'll be taken in for a full time role of things go well but they've not told me anything regarding the pay once it gets converted which I hope I'll be able to do. I've seen in some threads that the pay is around 55-65 but I feel that's for the Mumbai office.

If anyone has any inputs regarding salary for an associate with 0 PQE at the chennai office

Do keep confidentiality in mind though; this particular task is okay, but anything with any confidential information can't be fed to a LLM (unless you host it yourself).

It is equivalent to a management quota wherein some students are being made to pay more in order to subsidise many others, including those with category reservations. No. The purpose of assessment is to help people understand how good you're. Getting the work done by any means is a strategy that the associates can try out, not an intern. Even if you get AI to come up with a first cut, go through the judgements carefully and that cut to ensure that everything makes sense and no hallucination or lack of logic is evident.

NRI/ NRI Sponsorship quota essentially refers to a quota for Non resident Indians.

And non resident indians are indian citizens in the first place, just they live abroad. The other quota is NRI Sponsorship where if you have a relative living abroad they can sponsor u in. Most nlus have this quota, NUJS being the highest ranked nlu that offers it. And no it has nothing do with lower or upper caste.

Certainly it could be considered as a means to get more money, but well ppl who have money are desperate enough for admission

Yes, that’s true. As the link says, Freshfields will sponsor your entire fees for an LLM at Kings College London in tech law, PLUS give you a living allowance of 20,000 pounds (bear in mind that student accommodation and food are subsidised, so it’s adequate). The firm sees it both as an incentive for the employee and as an investment for the firm, because after the LLM the lawyers will come back and help the firm grow its tech practice.

In comparison, Trilegal is not paying a single penny towards your education. All they are promising is that they will hold your place in the firm and not terminate your employment.

Yes. You still have it in you. First and foremost, create a strong foundation on Companies Act, Contract Act, Transfer of Property Act, Specific Relief Act, Sales and Goods Act, FEMA (if possible). Various kinds of agreements dealt in business transactions (You do not have to go through the nitty gritty of those, just basic understanding as to what they do and how they do is sufficient enough).

This is going to take you some time.

Try applying for internships at boutique firms. Do not apply at top tier law firms - it would be a waste move, you won't stand a chance to get that micro second attention of the HRs.

Boutique firms would be happy to test your knowledge. Be ready with your basics. You would get through with ease. Gain as much hands-on experience as possible and if possible get a call-back internship from them. If they like your work, ask them at the end if a job prospect exists. Do this with multiple firms. Somewhere or another you might get through.

Do not think that the pay would be as good as you are expecting to be. Those pay are only limited to top tier firms. For now baby steps. Pay won't be that good and long working hours can be expected. Gain experience for a year or so and then you can easily make a move to the top law firms.

1. Seemingly, the dates were declared only 12 days in advance. So I personally think that that's something valid to be a bit angry about, though the CJI's presence naturally means that some inconveniences have to be there.

As for the entire "graduates who have moved abroad" thing, in typical overseas destinations (like UK, U.S. etc), whatever they'd be doing (like an LLM or whatever) wouldn't start until August or September. This would mean that they wouldn't have even moved by this time, yet! Therefore, even within the "graduates who have moved abroad category", we have a further sub-category who might not be able to participate: those who've gone for summer vacation schemes. So unless somebody is trying to say that the NALSAR graduating cohort is largely comprised of students who obtained summer vacation schemes at London law firms...

For example, suppose my rank in the SC/ST/OBC list is good enough only for a low-ranked NLU like Shimla or Patna or Ranchi. Can I upgrade to NUJS under the NRI quota on the basis of caste reservation? As I see it, the term NRI quota is a misnomer because those being admitted are Indian residents. So thats why I am asking. If there is no caste sub-quota, then isn’t it unconstitutional, because you are basically extending the general category merit list seats and charging the extra students a higher fee. You are avoiding the social and constitutional imperative to reserve seats for marginalised communities.

There are. Also note law firms hiring is unfair - unfair because it favors the privileged. It is not caste based. Even the SC/STs who are economically privileged get this benefit. I'm at a Tier 1 NLU where one ST female student (won't give any other detail) who is very rich (on a sidenote, she still eats up slots of economically underprivileged STs in Govt scholarship too without any shame) got a PPO because one of the top partners of a T2 firm is her family friend.

This is just one is example. Atleast from my T1 NLU bahujans are increasingly getting into T1 firms - some on merit some due to privilege - just like UCs.

If this were true, then CVs would not have to be submitted at the time of listing your preferences of judges but instead only after you are offered an interview on the basis of rank. Your rank will ensure you are considered for an interview but you'll actually receive the call based on a holistic review. The judicial office interviews are taken by the judges themselves and interviewing everyone on a rank list without consideration as to whether they would likely want to work with them at all is what doesn't make sense to describe as non-transparent. As for influences/referrals, every judge can pick two people without giving the exam at all. If anyone had those level of connections, why would they give this exam to begin with?

I am from a t2 nlu batch of 2026. I’ve done a bunch of decent internship but somehow nothing has worked out for me, despite good feedback. I’m coming to realise that I might end up not getting a job, and it’s put me in a very bad place mentally. I’ve mostly only done disputes internships, but if im being honest that hasn’t hindered with my prospects. Regardless, I don’t want to end up depressed and unemployed and that person w decent prospects and potential, but somehow jobless.

I want to yall to tell me-

1. what do i do?

2. other prospects - law and allied fields- which is the most viable? mba? ma? abroad? llm?

PPO is your best way forward. try for firms like trilegal, s&r (if you consider that t1) or even kco that don’t care about your marks but only your work. SAM and CAM are out of the picture realistically speaking, they are very rank centric. Start interning at these firms 3rd year second sem break onwards, no sooner (hiring issues) or later (you won’t be able to accommodate call backs. All of this is assuming you’re froma. decent college

These people are NALSAR graduates and earning enough money now. If they are not, then they will buy train tickets, why will they go for the flight option? How's the accommodation issue a factor in this? Wouldn't they have to spend money for staying even if the event was declared five months before?
