I have known three law students who went to JGLS:

1. One of them, a pretty smart guy, described it (Jindal Uni) and the education it claims to offer its law students as a "weapons-grade ▮▮▮" after being there for a year and transferred to the LLB programme at a pretty good British university.

2. The other two: ▮▮▮ By the time I had returned to India temporarily for a flying visit before going back overseas to do other things, the entire family had lost interest in the LLM idea (as even the parents couldn't remain motivated when the kid had no interest).

I find it more productive to just give up and sleep, and maybe wake up a little early to get work done. That way my mind fresh at 7am can do the work in say 2 hours, as opposed taking 8 hours from 1am to 9am with the all nighter.

when i was a student a certain creepy professor would add you on facebook and then talk to you using the chat function. We knew it was creepy and after he did it to one student, the rest of us wizened up and stopped responding to his friend request. just do that. Young professors might not always mean harm- they might just be too young to know better, but that doesnt mean that healthy professional boundaries dont benefit teacher and student.

2) Be on your feet - walking helps keep the sleep at bay.

3) Caffeine, caffeine, caffeine (along with high protein/carb food in limited quantity).

4) Try to set realistic targets for the day post all-nighter, and attempt to retire early. No job or SHA is worth having a brain stroke.

You want to study in a law school with 700+ people with a fees structure of 50 lakhs over the 5 years and placements and job offers to such a few people out of 7-800 students over an NLU, which is known across the industry even though with an average academic focus and a college where so many students get placement and offers and where the fees is around 12-14 lakhs? Hii, I am a BO27 student from NLU (Not disclosing the exact name but a tier-2) and would be graduating in april 2027. I had preety decent internships till now and have also worked quite decently but the batch rank is becoming a issue for me as I am not even in top 50 of my batch. The worst part about litigation is that opposing counsel are always baying for your blood and looking at your work with a magnifying glass. They are actively delaying matters which you want to get done.

In transactions, the opposing counsel still wants to get the deal done and slight mistakes (like wrong execution pages) are generally brushed under the carpet.

Some might. But if too many did, I'd be surprised. They are in the stoneage, for one thing; for another, they don't have any proper systems to evaluate CVs etc (unlike their foreign counterparts); finally, their so-called "equivalents" to the graduate recruitment teams of a magic circle or AmLaw20 firms are so bloody lazy and incompetent that I would find it hard to imagine them liking doing the brain work required to understand these systems.

A student had organised a birthday party in Boys’ Hostel. The crowd went uncontrollable due to excessive drinking. Some of them, including the main ▮▮▮ who also organised the party, started hurling xenophobic and misogynistic abuses at a senior faculty from ▮▮▮ who was residing in NUJS at that point of time. ▮▮▮, ▮▮▮. A suspension letter was about to be issued which was later withheld. He was suddenly let go of scott free without any investigation whatsoever. The current SJA did not take up the issue and instead elevated him to higher position of power and has been vigorously defending him ever since.

hi, im in fourth year at hpnlu. so our placement cell is getting a good amount of firms for internships. other than that, a good amount of bo26 is actively partaking great internships in a lot of tier 1s. we also have an internship policy implemented now and students can avail exemption to intern. we still have a long way to go but its getting better with each batch. but additionally, this might just be my opinion because i switched from a private college to hpnlu, but their is very vast difference in the quality of education between hpnlu (most nlus in gen) and some other college can offer, so this is something worth keeping in mind if it matters to you.

Are y’all comfortable seeing profs commenting on your posts and sending you friend requests to increase their follower count?

I was in this exact position two years ago choosing between these two law schools. I have since come to Jindal. I think the acadmic exposure is difficult to rival. Of course not all your professors will be stand-outs but theres the fair share of great faculty. If you can afford Jindal, its probably the best place to be; if the finances are a stretch, look into the entrance exam based scholarship (I dont know if the criterias have changed since the shift from the LSAT), but the entrance scholarships are quite generous (upto 75%) and most students here do recieve atleast some financial aid. JGLS also offers a merit/means scholarship once you are here, from the second year onward, but this is capped at a certain amount (1.5L I think). Keep in mind though that scholarships cover only tuition and the housing/dining fee will be the same, and that there will obviously be miscellaneous expenses no matter where you choose to go. Opportunity wise I think Jindal is probably the way to go (atleast in terms of access, exposure, and depending on your merit: placements), but I am sure there is nothing stopping you from doing well at NLUO if you put in the work. If the financial position is extremely precarious, don't take the risk, work hard at the NLU and you will be golden regardless. If you can afford to take the risk, I would say the quality of education and the experience at Jindal is worth it. Someone from NLUO will be a much better bet at telling you how life there is. Senior Associates at JSA get 24-32 LPA as bill share in high billing teams. Add to it a fixed of 33 LPA and 18 LPA bonus. Making 60-75 LPA as an SA at JSA isn't difficult in the high billing teams like M&A, Capital Markets and B&F. Just that you arent part of such teams. :)

It's totally opposite. ECM especially the execution side or as some banks call it Corporate Finance, is all about looking after the offer document and coordination of the drafting with the law firms, it's the most suitable role for lawyers. The Coverage/Sector teams which do M&A are based on a lot of financial modelling, this isn't regulation based at all. The most regulation based department is ECM whose bible is the ICDR.

I really dont know how many different ways it needs to be said. An LLM is only for you if you want academia and maybe research. It makes little to no sense paying fat fees to do an llm and taking yourself out of the working world for a year or two hoping it will get you "placement". JGLS has a tough enough job placing its BA/BBA/Bcom llb cohort. You will be very far down the list of priorities. This is more or less the case in every indian university. If you want a better job than what you can get right now- spend two years working your ass off with a senior who will likely not pay you much instead and build a name for yourself. thats time thats much better spent if you eventually want to end up in industry.

You cannot make up for an undergraduate degree from a so-so institution by getting an llm from your nls/nalsar/nujs/jgls/nlud etc. It just doesnt work like that in the industry. Work ex will carry a lot more weight. Understand that partners and PAs and SAs more often than not do not have an LLM themselves. They dont know what the degree is or how its supposed to make you more hire-able. Its as foreign to them as surgery is to a psychiatrist.

If you want to do academia- go for it. Do the LLM. If you want to work abroad- get into the fanciest possible llm programme in UK/US and you might end up with a job at the end of it. Maybe some government posts require an LLM. But otherwise- stay in the workforce.

I used to think litigation work is easy seeing the number of advocates roaming in the civil courts and the kind of fees they generally charge. And I had an impression in my mind that this is the reason law firms do not generally pay the litigation associates at par with their corporate peers.

However, I have been handling a personal matter before a few forums and I would like to accept that I was wrong. There are so many things to lear. Every forum has its own procedural quirks. Every judge has their biases and mannerisms. Knowing which judge runs with their cases and you need to be at the court at what time. The disappointment when you have prepared everything and on the date of the hearing the judge is on leave. The physical effort you need to put going from your fancy offices to those old shabby buildings with no air circulation wearing that thick blazer. Running for photocopies and for filings at the eleventh hour.

I seriously think they should be paid at par with the corporate folks. If you are a corporate associate and think otherwise, I would highly recommend handling at least one matter on your own.

I am really scared of pulling an all nighter. The next day after an all nighter my head is thumping like anything. I cannot concentrate. I cannot read a SHA. My brain is just lost. Given that we are in this profession, I don't think anyone in T1 can avoid all nighters or few hours of sleep once a month, especially in transaction teams. I am currently contemplating applying for the CLAT PG examination with the intention of pursuing an LLM program at OP Jindal, specifically focusing on Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR). I've seen the other threads on this site pertaining to the same, but I'm still very confused on whether I should pick NLU Odisha or Jindal. Jindal is a financial stretch, but I've heard it is a great law school and many have told me it is on the same level as the tier 1 NLUs in terms of Infrastructure, placements and other opportunities. NLUO on the other hand is also growing quite rapidly but they still don't have the establishment and tier 1 placements that the top NLUs have as of yet, although this seems to be changing. I spoke to a couple students at NLUO and they told me the admin and faculty are not great but the placements are improving.

Should I take a financial risk and pick Jindal? Is it worth the financial risk and is Jindal as good as the top law schools?
Or should I pick NLUO and work hard there to grab the best opportunities?

1. If you receive your legal education in India, then it does define a lot of things. Saying otherwise is total nonsense. Businesspeople in India have become more confident about the quality of their lawyers since the NLU system was implemented. Finally, thanks to the NLU system, a respectable number of Indian lawyers, like Indian economists, Indian scientists, Indian engineers, Indian IT people, have been able to make their mark on the world and to aspire for, and take up, positions in globally ranked places. If you receive your legal education outside India, of course, then it's a different matter.

2. Granted, law school doesn't teach some at least of what it should. However, it teaches basic skills. Reading and being able to write a summary of a case!! If you didn't learn that from your law school, then your choice of law school was wrong. Simples.

3. As far as it goes, that statement is correct: "Failing CLAT is not the end of the world and anyone’s career." Then have you passed AILET, the other major entry test for good legal education in India? Very well, then: have you been able to prove yourself in systems that are arguably better than the Indian one? Have you gotten yourself a good degree in a non-law subject and past the LSAT (U.S.) and been able to get into a T14 law school or good Canadian uni? Have you been able to have a combo of good LNAT score + top-of-the-range school marks + (depending on the circumstances) a good IELTs score to get into a good UK uni (Oxbridge/some of the UoL unis/Warwick etc)? No? If all the answers are no, then I am sorry, de facto it is the end of the career for many people. You are actively causing harm, by propagating a false picture, if you don't admit this to be the unvarnished truth.

During internships I got majorly research work and I feel compared to paralegals and internships who received PPO I lag behind? Am I expected to draft or take a leap in DDs from the start or will I get time to absorb it and learn.

My ex boss probably hated his wife. He used to stay back in office till late in the night (10pm), even when he had no work. He expected us, his team also to stay back. Had to eat fucking sad ass dinners in office so many times in a row.

He also loved coming in on Saturdays, and staying in office till 9pm or 9.30pm, even when there was no work or deadline. He also expected us to come in and waste our day in the office.

The kicker, the man used to come into office not before 1pm on weekdays, and around 3.30pm on Saturdays, while we had to come in early by 10 or 11. Can you imagine the toxicity in that office? God it was suffocating. I was elated when I could finally quit.

Maybe the shoot was important to him, and he thought you wouldn’t have granted him leave if he had told you the real reason. So, I think you're wrong here, not him. There's nothing wrong with taking leave to pursue one's interests, and the fact that he couldn’t be honest with you suggests that the problem lies with you.

Bump. Very similar experience. Was told all was perfect and we look forward to more etc etc, only to recieve a mail a day later with the exact opposite. Would have just appreciated honest feedback instead. Mail didn't even mention a single reason for why not and honestly wasn't very polite either, and this is after I spent 4 months with this firm.
