We broke regressive standards and brought in a culture of inclusion, empathy, social justice and progressive change across NLUs. Rather than ratta maroing like previous generations, we brought in critical thinking and challenged the epistemological and ontological assumptions of the curriculum.

Will Gen Alpha have the same outlook?

Everywhere it would be different. Lumiere pay scales would be around EY scales, RPS scales would be somewhat lower and no idea about Sabari but not sure if he's really reached the stage of recruiting juniors and if he has, I guess it would be lowest in 3. For culture, RPS is quite demanding, as mentioned above. Not sure about Lumiere and Sabari.

Have you been able to see this "sunshine"? or could you elaborate a bit on what it is- because I see seniors working just as many hours as juniors. And logically- the stakes just get higher as you become a PA/Partner/Sr. Adv, don't they? Work hours may reduce marginally, but that may be offset by a marked increased in stress? (may be completely wrong here)

I have indeed considered academic work, and I am strongly inclined to it. But if I want to be an associate professor in a tier-1 NLU, I need a masters degree. The gestation period is a bit too long!

I am strongly considering slogging it out in a law firm for a few years (5-6 years) and then doing a lateral entry into in-house.

I am just scared of losing the best years of my life (20s)- I want to travel, have a romantic and social life. Does the law allow for this? Lmao. and does wanting all this make me a snowflake, or human? Surely the point of life can't be to work yourself to the grave

Would I be right in concluding this? Or am I selectively looking at what the algorithm feeds me?

If the first is correct, my hypothesis would be this:

- NLSIU attracts views because NLSIU is NLSIU. It’s the #1 law school and the dream of all law aspirants. The same reason why people would be curious to look at content by Harvard students. It’s like a wonderland.

- JGLS reels are less about academics and more about the campus life: the impressive infrastructure and sports facilities, the kind of food served, parties, GRWM campus fashion reels by girls etc. There’s an element of curiosity from the masses who wish take a peek into the lives of uber-wealthy kids, a real-life version of the kind of college life one sees in movies.

Thoughts on this? Happy to be corrected if other NLUs also register high views.

Why are people on this site so much against individual liberty and for foisting their paternalistic, communitarian norms on everyone?

It should be my choice when and how I wish to end my life and exercise my bodily autonomy. I don’t wish to live like a vegetable just because some Bishop or Sadhu or Maulana says so. Or because some commie thinks that assisted dying somehow validates the Marxist view that one must be economically productive to live in a capitalist society. Rather, true capitalism means financial liberty and I should have the liberty to spend on assisted suicide rather than on a lifetime of having painful tubes inserted in my body, or spoonfed on a wheelchair with no cognition (in the case of Alzheimer’s).

Gawd this country needs libertarianism on steroids and we need to start with the education system!

It’s not enough, because a 5% relaxation is too little and there is still discretion in the hands of the company, rather than guaranteed caste reservation. Also, it’s just for sporadic hiring. But it’s still an important start. We don’t ever see Microsoft or Adani or Ambani doing this.

Going forward, this may be what caste-based DEI in the private sector looks like: voluntary steps with slight marks relaxation, rather than blanket reservation irrespective of marks scored. Some form of DEI will be inevitable, if and when the Congress returns to power and Rahul Gandhi becomes PM. MNCs, Ambani and Adani will have to come on board, eventually law firms like CAM and SAM too.

Finally, an interesting thing to note is that the ad only mentions SCs and STs, not OBCs. So the more privileged land-owning agricultural middle castes are kept out and only those at the real bottom are targeted.

I have 2 Year PQE with a financial services institution. In the past 6-8 months I got to do some capital markets work. I am currently in Mumbai but am shifting to Delhi due to personal reasons. I've been seeing many posts on reddit and other forums about how JGLS's Cutoff is higher than expected , and may people are failing to get the 5 year programs and are instead being offered a 3+3 year program. There is no such requirement. Dont worry unnecessarily . Most graduation certificates will not even list your parents names and even if they do, people are interested in your name and not your mother's. just ensure that your name has a consistent spelling across all your documents.

You are a bit of a snowflake - read any good legal autobiography and you'll see that this is part of the game, but it's only for a finite time. There is sunshine if you wait long enough.

That aside, if finances are a concern, have you considered academic work? speak to your profs - salaries are not law firm level but still decent! You will probably have more satisfaction with the work.

I am a third year student in an NLU who has recently started interning with chambers as well as law firms. As someone who decided to do law because of a love for the law as a subject, I am deeply deeply disillusioned by the law as a profession. The work is crude and lacks sophistication or intellectual stimulation, atleast until you claw your way to a high level, and the work becomes more cranial. Also, the work at firms seems to be far more dull and boring when compared to litigation, atleast at the associate level. But litigation pays its associates like shit, and i have too many financial responsibilities to do that; the intellectual stimulation:salary ratio is not worth it. Irrespective of a firm or a chamber, the work environment is often toxic, and finally, the worst of all- the work hours.

Putting in 10-12 hour days is the bare minimum, and somehow the entire industry has normalised it. Feel free to tell me if I am a snowflake, or quintessentially Gen-Z, for wanting to have time in the day to myself. For living a LIFE that is not defined ONLY by my work, for not wanting to be under constant stress and pressure, and for wanting to be HEALTHY. Because lets face it- most lawyers are NOT healthy. Physically OR mentally. I am sure there are exceptions, and I have come across some myself, but most lawyers I have worked for/under are overweight, balding, overworked and overstressed. is this endemic to the legal industry in India, or is this the norm for lawyers all over the world? and also- is this only the case for law in India, or are other indian industries also like this? As for the original side practice, the work hours are hectic. You would be having about 4-6 hours of sleep in your first few years. Scope of work, though you may not work in the high profile matters, the issues involved would mostly e similar to any other run of the mill socalled high value matter somewhere else.. As for fees, it starts at 500 to 850 Rs per appearance in the hc. That, however, is the lower end as a raw junior almost always get briefs outside of the high court where the fees are Rs. 1500 pee appearance

Seniors here are amazing, many are barristers, or devilled in the chambers of barristers. Post when years, you perhaps want go independent to you would e earning enough to buy a 6- 10 L car on EMI. Seniors, of course don't pay youhowever, it is, bye as told by one with a a bout 10 years of practice charging about 7000 - 10,000 per appearance appearances daily on average, it is neither too bad nor too good.

Yes, for adjournments. I have often been shocked how hesitant and underconfident many T1 law partners (who otherwise end up on Top 100 lists) are when they are put on the spot in courts and tribunals. After a certain age, a solicitor would find it very difficult to build practice as arguing counsel.

Many are exceptional however, and owners / former owners of many IP firms come to mind as great arguing counsel at Delhi HC. As such, my suggestion would be to consider IP firms if you wish to improve your advocacy skills.

This is what Legally India has come to. Lawyers not properly so-called using an emotional tribute to advance a certain agenda. No thought at all. No consideration of the implications. No evaluation of factors like coersion, being made to feel like a burden, capacity and best interests, disproportionate impact on the disabled if assisted dying measures are implemented/the chances of such impacts being felt as safeguards might be eroded, no conversations about observing patterns where this has already been introduced or is in the process of being introduced... did you not see how in the UK, the sponsor of a Private Member's Bill was initially promising such heavy safeguards, then decided to start eroding them? Why is that? Talking with zero knowledge, as I said before.

I recently got to know that because my mum is a govt. employee, my certificates 10th and 12th, eventually graduation certificates should list her name with her maiden name.(bcuz my sister is 10th class i got to know this)

for eg. my father's surname is K. My mum's maiden name is Ch. Usually mother surname also takes K but bcuz she is a govt. employee her name in my certificates should be Ch.

Is there any advice for this predicament or is the name change necessary? i have advised to look into gazette notification or such changes

One look at the cause list in Lucknow Bench of HC and you see the usual surnames; Shukla, Mishra, Thakur, Pandey, Upadhyay etc. its brutal.

I don't mind the competition but they have such a strong lobby, akin to a cartel and have hogged the entire space, be it the bench, panel appointments etc., their caste privilege has made things easier for them, delhi is still more cosmopolitan and promotes meritocracy (not as much as bombay tho).

Combined that with an Upper Caste dominated government in Uttar Pradesh, it is very hard for Men/Women from SC/ST/OBC and Minority Communities to thrive in this space, you'll have to work twice hard when compared to those with caste privilege and still not be as successful as them.

1. Current number 4 certainly needs to be taken out of that spot and put below top 5.

2. Jindal is not an adequate substitute for the current number 4, because it is not eligible for that spot, nor for anything in top five. A third university would need to be found which would adequately substitute for NUJS and which certainly isn't Jindal.

I've participated in both these as well so here's what I know. The Pranita Mehta essay competition's submission deadline was 20th July, so I think that might have been confused with. The last time I checked with the OC, they did acknowledge the delay and said could be announced sometime next month.

But about the IDIA essay competition, they are absolutely right. There was NO result announcement this year. There was a lot of fuss about it as well, since we couldn't track anybody who ended up claiming being the winner (people in the past have always posted about it). The OB's response to all these issues through the mail was really disappointing and definitely concerning. I would've posted the mail here too if that were an option.

I have done tax internship for 5 month (2 month in firm + 3 month under senior advocate) the learning curve under the senior advocate was steep and after investing nearly 14 hours per day during internship now I am in core group for brainstorming session on important matters and he also allows me to draft petition on matter in which law is settled).

I also have internship lined up in tier 1 law firms, so guys please suggest me what should I choose, should I continue with senior advocate who doesn't pay his associates but allows for independent assignment and sometimes refer his associates for small matters or should I try my chance in tier 1 law firm.

Right now I am unable to learn anything about international taxation and tax implications due to merger and acquisition.

Before, I write anything, just to clarify I am in no way associated with NLUJ, it’s just I personally find the Pranita Mehta team has been nothing but transparent in my experience. I spoke to one of the team members and was told that the number of entries this year was more than double the usual, which explains the delay.

Also, as far as I remember, the deadline to submit the essay was in mid-August, which is when I submitted my entry. So I’m not sure where this idea is coming from that the results were supposed to be announced in July, before the submission window even closed. And just to clarify, I didn’t pay any registration fee for my entry either.

I am currently practising in Delhi and am thinking about shifting my base to Kolkata. Now, I understand that fees are less and probably with fewer industries, commercial practice is more limited. But regardless, I will appreciate if anyone practising in Kolkata can give an honest opinion about the scope in commercial litigation / arbitration practice based out of Kolkata.
