Bangalore: Just 4-6 hours of classroom teaching a week, rising instances of drug abuse, sex and drinking among students, indifference to plagiarism in student project reports and decline in serious research pursuit and academic rigour.
This is the dismal state of affairs at Bangalore's National Law School of India University, one of India's premier institutes, as painted by the School Review Commission that assessed the 24-year-old school.
Observing that NLSIU has moved away from the phase of "exploration and accomplishment'' to a "phase of diminution and dissatisfaction'', the commission says there is a drastic dilution of academic standards. "The rigorous work culture and singular commitment, the hallmark of NLSIU inthe first decade of its existence, is on the wane. The level of functioning is now far from expectations."
The commission, appointed by the Chief Justice of India, was headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice K T Thomas and had professors Virendra Kumar and MP Singh as members.
The CJI's office forwarded the report to the law school in May 2009. The recommendations, along with the action taken report by the law school, have been exclusively accessed by TOI. The faculty is clearly in the commission's crosshairs for its inequitable distribution of teaching work and mismatch in allocation of teaching subjects.
"Some teachers, especially the young, have been assigned courses in which they hardly had any in-depth exposure. Cancellation of the scheduled class owing to non-availability of the teacher concerned at the last moment, has become a rather common practice," observes the report.
The report states that law school teachers are "often ignorant (of) and mostly indifferent" to plagiarism in project reports submitted by students. Appointment of non-academic persons (retired district judge with no teaching experience) to handle academic tasks (adjunct faculty) and absence of a formal control mechanism to evaluate teachers and their working has drawn flak.

So it is high time that people should come out of this illusion of NLSIU being a one institution army while it continues to disappoint on various grounds.
Blogging is often as much about sharing content from elsewhere with readers as creating new content.
I agree that original content is always preferable to copying other content but in this case it was pretty clear that it was from a newspaper article, the blogger quickly provided a citation of the original and I do not think tried to pass this off as his own work.
We will keep re-evaluating the semi-open nature of the blogging platform as and when required.

What malpractices are you referring to? Are you suggesting that the other law schools are free of plagiarism? Or are you suggesting that students indulging in sex, drugs and alcohol are a purely NLS phenomenon?
The article in ToI, outdated and tabloid-esque as it is, clearly derives it's mileage from unthinking and sublimely ignorant responses such as yours.
Apart from that, this alleged report seems to take isolated instances and weave them into a fanciful tapestry - a la Dan Brown.
What is National law school of Bangalore about
It is an institution where there is day light prostition, where drugs are available, Where students smoke cigarets with teachers and what not
"students smoke cigarets with teachers"?
Do you understand what you're saying? I doubt you do. First of all, have the courtesy to write intelligible comments. Basic grammar and spelling is not too much to expect, is it? Most softwares have a spell-check function, in case you're not sure of how to spell something.
More to the point, if you're going to fling accusations around, atleast point to your sources. Prostitution, really? Any proof that any NLS student has had sex for money? No? I thought as much. If they're adults having sex, it's none of your business. And if you're reduced to trolling Legally India for tawdry news, well, you're better off on the TOI website.
you are acting in a highly irresponsible fashion here. you are not citing any sources but placing accusations on an institution and its students . prostitution? you must be joking; do you really think students perform sexual favours to get better grades? and drug peddling? if it was so common and well-know,then you would have read reports of police raiding the campus which hasn't happened for your information.
and yes, do use better language while writing your comments.
