Bangalore’s annual inter law firm cricket tournament is back! This is the 8th edition of the tournament, with the first four being organized by the Society for Indian Law Firms (“SILF”), while the next four (including this edition) have been organized by a bunch of proactive lawyers who came together to form the Justice League Cricket Club (“JLCC”), which is also why this edition is called the JLCC Cup 2016.

Unlike in any previous edition, the knockout stages of the JLCC Cup 2016 will be liveblogged through Legally India (“LI”). The live blog will start at 7:30 AM on Sunday, February 21, 2016. The schedule for Sunday includes the four quarterfinals (starting at 8:00 AM), two semi finals (at 11:15 AM) and the big final (at 2:00 PM).

The group stages of the JLCC Cup 2016 took place on February 13 and February 14, 2016 (Saturday and Sunday). There were 26 participating teams (from 34 firms, as some firms merged to form teams) divided into four groups, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the quarterfinals. The eight teams who will be contesting the quarterfinals are:

  1. Anup S Shah Law Firm (Group A)
  2. Shetty and Hegde Associates (Group A)
  3. J. Sagar Associates (Group B)
  4. AZB and Partners (Group B)
  5. Gogi and Gogi Advocates (Group C)
  6. Lawyers Inc. (Group C)
  7. Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (Group D)
  8. Khaitan and Co. (Group D)

and here are the quarterfinal matchups:

QF 1 - 8:00 AM - J. Sagar Associates v Gogi and Gogi Advocates

QF 2 - 8:00 AM - Khaitan and Co. v Anup S Shah Law Firm

QF 3 - 9:20 AM - Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas v Shetty and Hegde Associates

QF 4 - 9:20 AM - AZB and Partners v Lawyers Inc.

Also, since we all love our stats, here’s a quick look at the players who have scored the most runs in the tournament so far:

Don’t forget to tune in at 7:30 AM tomorrow. Reading about some fat lawyers playing Mickey-Mouse cricket may not be the ideal way to spend a Sunday morning, but we promise to keep the coverage entertaining!

7:55 AM, Sunday, Breakfast: Good morning, folks! The four teams - Khaitan, Gogi & Gogi, JSA and Anup Shah - playing the two QF matches at 8:00 AM are here. We usually expect teams to be warming up around this time, but at the JLCC Cup 2016, all of the players are downing some breakfast. Idly, vada and dosa it is!

The toss should happen in about 10 minutes from now.

8:05 AM, Toss: Since the first two QFs are happening simultaneously, there are four captains are the toss here.

The two captains winning the toss have adopted differing strategies. Here's the update:

QF 1 - J. Sagar Associates v Gogi and Gogi Advocates

JSA has won the toss and elected to bat

QF 2 - Khaitan and Co. v Anup S Shah Law Firm

Anup Shah has won the toss and elected to field

8:15 AM, Ground Selection: Apart from the toss to decide which teams will bat and bowl, there is also a toss to determine which ground the teams will be playing on. It has been decided that QF 1 (J. Sagar Associates v Gogi and Gogi Advocates) will be played on "Ground 1" while QF 2 (Khaitan and Co. v Anup S Shah Law Firm) will be played on "Ground 2".

Ground 1 has bigger boundaries than Ground 2, and also a faster pitch.

8:15 AM, QF 2: QF 2 is underway and Khaitan has gotten off to a brisk start. In an action packed first over, Rishab hit the first ball for four and was also dropped on the boundary later in the over.

Score Update

QF 2: Khaitan v Anup Shah

First Innings: End of over 1 - Khaitan 10/0

 8

8:35 AM, QF 1: Near identical start in QF 1, with JSA's Kurien crashing one through the square boundary on the off side, and there was also what the commentator and crowd thought was a dropped catch by the keeper, but it was signalled as byes by the umpire.

Score Update

QF 1: JSA v Gogi & Gogi

First Innings: End of over 1 - JSA 11/0

8:45 AM, QF 2: Anup Shah have clawed their way back into the match. Both openers got Khaitan off to a good start, but Anup Shah have now dismissed Rishab (12) and Srinivas, a.k.a DV (27). DV hit some good shots, including a big six and was eventually dismissed caught on the boundary line. There was even some debate about whether that was caught inside the rope, but the umpire has raised his finger.

Score Update

QF 2: Khaitan v Anup Shah

First Innings: End of over 5 - Khaitan 55/2

8:55 AM, QF 1: JSA is going along nicely, with Kurien curently batting on 32. He was also in good form during the group stages, and has probably been JSA's most successful batsman in the JLCC Cup 2016. The tournament rules require a batsman to retire out after he has scored 36 runs, and Kurien is closing in on that mark.

Score Update

QF 1: JSA v Gogi & Gogi

First Innings: End of over 4 - JSA 47/1

9:00 AM, QF 2: Khaitan have finished up with 72 runs from their allotted six overs. They would have expected to do better after the start that Rishab and DV gave them. Anup Shah could have kept them to an even lower score if not for soom poor field.

Score Update

QF 2: Khaitan v Anup Shah

First Innings: End of over 6 - Khaitan 72/2

Target for Anup Shah: 73

9:00 AM, QF 1: JSA have finished their innings on 71, comparable to Khaitan's 72 in the other QF. Looks like I put the jinx on Kurien, who didn't get to the mark of 36, and was eventually dismissed on 34. Anything above 70 is considered a competitive total in this format, and JSA will be hoping they can defend this.

Score Update

QF 1: JSA v Gogi & Gogi

First Innings: End of over 6 - JSA 71/3

Target for Gogi & Gogi: 72

Score Update

QF 3 - Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas v Shetty and Hegde Associates - Ground 1

End of 3 overs - 42/0.

Shetty and Hedgde need to put good runs on the board for the powerful CAM batting line to feel under presssure an they seem to be well on course for that. Remember last quterfinal - CAM (Amarchand Mangaldas as it was then) could not get the better of Shetty and Hegde. Sit tight.

Score Update

AZB and Partners v Lawyers Inc. - Ground 2

Anurag walking back with a brilliant 36 not out (the cumpulsory retirment). He could not have made more runs.

Second Innings: End of 1 over - 29/2

Lawyers Inc. need 58 from 4 overs.

10:28, QF 3 - CAM seems to be pacing its innings. They need boundaries to ease the presssure. Vijay and Bishen look well under control. We need some fire works. They need to pull it back before its too late. Waiting for that game changing over.

Lawyers Inc. on Ground 2 is butting up a good fight. Looks difficult for them 43 to win from 18 deliveries.

Some cute puppies and drooling women will take over until we are back in half an hour for another gripping session of this Battle of Lawyers at the JLCC.

The live blog had to be cut short due to some technical problems. However, here are the updates from the semi-final and the finals:

Semifinals

Unlike the previous matches, semi finals are eight overs per side.

Fans from both Khaitan and CAM seemed a little dissapointed at having to face each other, because the general feeling was that these were the best two teams in the tournament and there was hope they would only have to face each other in the final.

CAM won the toss and chose to field, just as they done during their successful QF match against Shetty and Hegde. This match was played on Ground 1, a slight advantage to CAM there as they also played their QF on Ground 1, while Khaitan had played their QF on Ground 2.

Khaitan started slowly, scoring only 41 runs from their first five overs, but picked up the pace to score 84 from their allotted eight overs. Bishen and Vijay came out to bat but Bishen, after hitting the first ball for four, retired hurt as he suffering from a bout of cramps. However, Vijay and Priyam chased down the total with ease, leaving more than an over to spare.

In the other semi final, AZB posted a huge score of 127, which they defended easily thereby handing Gogi and Gogi a crushing loss. Gogi and Gogi can proud of their performance though, including a clinical showing against JSA in the quarters.

The Big Final - AZB v CAM

The final was a 10-over per side game.

CAM once again won the toss and chose to bowl. AZB put on a strong batting display and scored 110 runs of their ten overs. Anurag, the top scorer in the tournament with 169 runs, top scored for AZB making and unbeaten. He has been undismissed throughout the tournament.

Vijay, coming off a Man-of-the-Match performance in the semifinals, cancelled Anurag's innings with an unbeaten 43 off his own. Bishen, who came out to open the innings despite cramps, posted a useful 25. The job was completed by Akshay and Priyam. CAM needed 10 runs to win off the last over and Priyam did that easily hitting a couple of stylish boundaries.

CAM are champions of the JLCC Cup 2016, and are the first team to win this trophy twice, having also won the inter law firm tournament conducted by SILF in 2012.

Presentation and Awards

The organisers, i.e. JLCC, did a wonderful job of organising the tournament and they didn't cut corners at the presentation ceremony either. Both teams were given beautiful cased medallions and majestic trophies. Here are the list of awards that were handed out:

Best Batsman - Anurag, AZB, for scoring 169 runs and remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament.

Best Bowler - Gautam Rego, AZB, who also contributed usefully with the bat and kept wickets for his team.

Best Lady Player - Rashmi, CAM, who savable many valuable runs on the boundary with her fielding and bowled one over in CAM's first match. She has represented India A.

Player of Tournament - Vijay, CAM, for his outstanding batting, captaincy and tidy bowling, especially rising to the occasions and making telling contributions during the knockout stages.

Thats all from here. See you at the JLCC Cup 2017.
