So, finally, the Delhi high court ruled in favour of the Lt. Governor of Delhi, Najeeb Jung, and the Central Government, in their turf war with Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal.

Jallikattu, an ancient sport, is held in rural parts of Tamil Nadu during Pongal festival. It involves young men clinging on to the hump of bulls to win prize money.

The Supreme Court has imposed a penalty of Rs 5 lakh on the Kerala State Electricity Board and NTPC for urging it to allow withdrawal of their appeal, saying they cannot treat the court according to their own convenience.

A bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice NV Ramana on Thursday took exception to the petitioners KSEB and NTPC seeking to withdraw their plea and said the withdrawal will be subject to payment of Rs 5 lakh to the Supreme Court Legal Services Authority.

Confirming that KSEB and NTPC were imposed Rs 5 lakh cost, counsel Vikas Upadhyay representing respondents Essar Power MP Ltd on Friday said the court did not appreciate the way the withdrawal of the case was sought after the judges had gone through four volumes of the petition running into 890 pages.

Imposing the cost, the bench said: “If you wanted to withdraw, why did you in first instance file it and persuaded us to issue notice.”

This is not a drawing room where you can walk in and walk out at your own ease, it added.

Yesterday (September 1) in Court No 8 of the Supreme Court, before justices Ranjan Gogoi and NV Ramana, a case of civil contempt against the Central Government was argued unsuccessfully by the petitioner in the main case of National Federation of the Blind vs Sanjay Kothari, Secy Deptt Of Personnel and Training.

The Supreme Court wants to know what happens to seized contraband across India, following allegations by former justice Ajit Kumar Sinha that only five to 10 per cent of it was destroyed, reported The Telegraph.

A Supreme Court bench of justices TS Thakur and NV Ramana were hearing the government’s appeal against the Punjab and Haryana high court’s acquittal of a drug peddler.

Sinha, who was appointed as the friend of the court, said that although authorities seized drugs such as Ganja, Hashish, Heroine, Ecstacy and other substances, worth hundreds of crores of rupees every day, only five to 10 per cent of it was destroyed. He also gave the instance of Calcutta where there was no record of how seized contraband was dealt with.

The judges asked solicitor general Ranjit Kumar to place before the court the steps being taken in Delhi to dispose of such contraband, within a week. They asked Kumar if any “drug disposal committee” had been set up in Delhi which was under the control of the central government, for law and order.

A Supreme Court bench of justices Ranjan Gogoi and NV Ramana today stayed the 20 March Delhi high court order that restrained generic drug maker Glenmark Pharmaceuticals from manufacturing an anti-diabetes drug over which Merck allegedly held a patent, reported Mint.

Senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi acted for Glenmark, with TR Andhyarujina acting for Merck. The next hearing will be on 28 April.

Delhi high court chief justice NV Ramana was elevated to the Supreme Court on Saturday and will assume office from Thursday, reported the New Indian Express.

Ramana served as chief at the Andhra Pradesh high court from 10 March to 20 May last year, and was elevated as Delhi HC’s chief on 20 September. He enrolled as an advocate in February 1983 and began his judicial career on 27 June 2000 as an Andhra HC judge.

Other than practicing in high court, Ramana has also had experience of central and state administrative tribunals and has been the advocate general of Andhra Pradesh.

The Madras high court, the Jharkhand high court, the Delhi high court and the Meghalaya high court will soon have new chief justices respectively with Madras HC acting chief justice RK Agrawal, Madras HC seniormost judge R Banumathi, Andhra Pradesh HC acting chief justice NV Ramana and seniormost Uttarakhand HC judge PC Pant’s names cleared  by the collegium, reported the Hindu.

It is the first time an Andhra Pradesh or Uttarakhand high court judge has become chief in any high court

A direct recruit, Justice Banumathi (58) entered the Tamil Nadu Higher Judicial Service in 1988 as district judge. She has worked as district and sessions judge in Coimbatore and Vellore. Justice Ramana (56), who hails from an agricultural family at Ponnavaram in Krishna district, has functioned as additional standing counsel for the Central government.”

Breaking: Alleged proclaimed offender and Andhra Pradesh high court (HC) judge NV Ramana will continue as a judge in that HC, after the Supreme Court (SC) today dismissed the petition challenging his appointment and imposed costs on each of the petitioners.
