"And to make the larger point that gauging judges by the mere arithmetic of numbers does great disservice to them. Particularly in cases such as this one where a well-regarded judge has been wrongly wrung on a faulty metric. A judge blessed with exceptional legal caliber, inviolable integrity and a cathartic compassion that shines through each one of her decisions," writes Shamnad Basheer in The Wire, in an assessment of Justice Gita Mittal and in the second of Spicy IP's series reviewing judges (the first is here ).

Two live hand grenades were found on Saturday in an unclaimed bag in the Varanasi district court premises, leading the police to cordon off the area and suspend the court’s work.

“All the entry and exit points to the court have been sealed and police is trying to check the whole premises for any more such things,” a senior police official told IANS

The grenades have been sent to be defused, an official of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) said.

A passer-by spotted the unclaimed bag under a chair near gate number one of the court and called the police.

While the police is saying that a probe is on, local intelligence unit (LIU) officials link the finding of the hand grenades to a possible gang war; they say Brijesh Singh and other mafia dons frequent the court for appearances in cases.

The possibility of a terror angle is also being explored, an official said.

There was a bomb explosion in this court in 2007 in which some people were killed.

All the cases listed for the day have been postponed to Monday.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aakash Kulhari said a probe is underway and that security has been scaled up.

Varanasi is the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Lawyers”, numbering up to 200, allegedly attacked leftist protest demonstrators in Allahabad, reported The Wire.

The report names several victims, including two women, who sustained injuries when 15-20 offenders, who’re reportedly lawyers, gathered at the spot of the peaceful demonstration, shouted slogans such as “Vande Mataram”, “Go back to Pakistan” and “traitors” at the demonstrators, and then called their associates to build up a crowd of 150-200 attackers.

Members of Left political parties theCommunist Party of India (Marxist), CPI, CPI (Marxist-Leninist), Socialist Unity Centre of India, Revolutionary Socialist Party and All India Forward Block, and the Students Federation of India, All India Students Association and All India Democratic Students Organisation, trade union leaders, women rights activists, civil society and academicians had peacefully gathered, with prior permission, at the Allahabad Collectorate to submit a memorandum to the president of India through the district magistrate.

A police complaint has been lodged for attempt to murder, rioting, and outraging the modesty of women, however The Wire’s report, which draws parallels to the Patiala House lawyer-mob violence incident of 15 and 17 February, does not name any accused.
