Exclusive analysis: NLSIU Bangalore still topped preferences among 2011 Common Law Admissions Test (CLAT) takers but NUJS Kolkata made up ground to second-most-popular Nalsar Hyderabad with eight going against convention. Plus, Legally India’s new Super 30 shows NLU Jodhpur on par with NLIU Bhopal.
NLSIU Bangalore still topped preferences among Common Law Admissions Test (CLAT) takers but NUJS Kolkata made up ground to second-most-popular Nalsar Hyderabad with eight going against convention.
NLSIU still led by far with the 32 highest CLAT scorers opting for the college, which this year had 58 places on the general list. The lowest rank to have been accepted to the NLSIU general list was at 64.
However, two people traditionally in the NLSIU ranks opted for Nalsar as their first choice and NUJS picked up three who could have also made it to NLSIU.
NLS vis-à-vis Nalsar/NUJS
The 33rd, 36th and 60th ranked chose NUJS Kolkata, which is traditionally a lower preference for CLAT takers than both NLSIU and Nalsar.
Nalsar managed to attract the 59th and 62nd ranked who could also have made the NLSIU cut-off.
Last year two toppers each chose NUJS and Nalsar respectively, despite having been able to opt for NLSIU Bangalore.
NUJS vis-à-vis Nalsar
In a big gain for NUJS eight CLAT takers gave it a first choice, despite having been able to also make it to Nalsar.
Last year only two students each had foregone guaranteed NLSIU or Nalsar seats respectively for NUJS (ranks 8, 31, 100 and 101 had selected NUJS; NLSIU’s cut-off was 59th rank and Nalsar’s was 102nd).
The Top 30 Avg Rank: NLU Jodhpur same as NLIU Bhopal
Legally India’s new Top 30 Average Rank metric, which averages the top 30 ranks at each college to come up with a weighted indication of topper-preferences without penalising larger batches, gives a clearer picture of topper preferences.
NLSIU still clearly leads and Nalsar’s top 30 scores are still 30 higher than NUJS’.
But NLIU Bhopal and NLU Jodhpur are locked head-to-head, with only a fractional difference in their respective averages scores of its 30 highest scoring entrants at 221.1 and 221.3 respectively.
NLIU with a general list batch of 37 – the smallest out of all law schools – has the stronger total average of 231, ahead of NLU Jodhpur’s 267 this year.
Nuals Kochi plummets two, HNLU, RMLNLU pull ahead
Nuals Kochi dropped behind HNLU Raipur and RMLNLU Lucknow in preference, which are now in seventh and eighth behind GNLU Gandhinagar.
The average rank for Nuals choices in 2010 was 442, which dropped to 543 this year or a Super 30 score of 507.9.
HNLU Raipur on the other hand rose slightly to 466 with an increased batch of 10 (see below), and a Super 30 score of 418.
RMLNLU Lucknow’s average rank dropped from last year to 538, with a Super 30 rank of 475.6.
RGNUL Patiala and CNLU Patna close the rankings with Super 30 ranks of 594.6 and 711.1 respectively.
By a whisker
The cut-off CLAT marks out of 200 between top-colleges are slim. Only five points each on the 200 question multiple choice CLAT divide the bottom cut-off at NLSIU (147), Nalsar (142), NUJS (137) and NLIU (132) in that order, with NLU Jodhpur’s lowest mark being only one point below NLIU’s.
GNLU and HNLU’s cut-off marks at 128 and 125 are only three and six points below NLU Jodhpur, while RMLNLU and Nuals cut-offs are both at 123 points. RGNUL and CNLU Patna’s cut-offs are at 122 and 120 respectively.
Full marks were awarded on several questions to all candidates this year, after some papers contained underlined answers, which confused test takers.
Buffered seating
The overall seat capacity at each university this year was increased by approximately 4 per cent with so-called “buffer seats” allotted to the all-India general category, decided the CLAT committee.
“This buffer is in order to provide against vacancies that may arise at the time of admissions,” explained the committee, with HNLU on request having been provided with a buffer of 10 seats. All students on the list or on buffer seats would be guaranteed a place, even if no students dropped out, did not take up their offers or did not pay their admission fees, according to a member of the CLAT committee.
The member explained: “We’ve generated the first list today. We ask folks to pay 25,000 immediately to confirm their seats. If they don't pay within the window, their names will not be on second list. The second list will consist of the revised list consisting of first list folks who paid 25,000 and those who’ve moved up to fill the vacancies created by those who did not pay 25,000.”

your hard work has made legally india the no 1 choice for law students to find info about law schools.
on a side note, nlsiu shows once again, why its the best :)
Better placements, a much better faculty and a huge advantage on location! Why will anyone choose NALSAR now?
This time the recruitment stats were out late; or NUJS would have been the clear 2nd!
lots of students like me don't really give a hoot about who is first..or second...or third..all are terrific. i had the option of choosing between nalsar and nujs but i chose nalsar because i have a my brother and sister there. oh and a side note...notice how many students there were in each batch..how many students sat for placements and how many opted for higher studies in all three institutions..compare and then come to a conclusion before starting an "ego"logical flame war
you guys wont get jobs ever.
5 ppos from Luthra AND 2 from AMSS already.
NLIU students dont even get an opportunity to intern in such firms.
BTW Kian, your last year's anaysis was better. Please update us on avg. scores of the candidates...this will show how close these students are on capabilities.
They didnt join NLS becuase NUJS environment was flexible. Ha! ha.
You Nalsirurts and NLSiiiiitss are just small cute kids :P
Just have a look at the average ranks.
NLSIU- 15
NALSAR- 80
NUJS- 110
And then a HUGE gap.
NLIU- 221
NLUJ- 221
Is it "CLAT preferences REMAIN"? or "CLAT preferences WOBBLE"?
2 students preferred NALSAR over NLSIU.
Sign of things to come! Go NUJS! Go NALSAR!
Demolish the cartel, the myth, the egotist, the supercilious called NLSIU!
I can already see people at NLS getting insecure!
the top 29 ranks unanimously chose nls.
choron ko sab chor nazar aatey hain. :D
NALSAR gives you better infra.
NUJS gives you better location and faculty.
What is better at NLSIU vis-a-vis NUJS/NALSAR?
The mythical reputation? That is it?
nlsiu is going to recruit new world class faculty.
nlsiu has good faculty, although nujs has better.
nlsiu has the best alumni network.
nlsiu is the biggest brand name in legal education in india.
the only thing going for nalsar is mpl, a perch from which you will be knocked off next year by nlsiu.
nalsar and nujs will always follow nlsiu. the king of kings.
new faculty- dream on
best alumni network- doesn't matter. that is ascertainable to age; not excellence.
biggest brand name? thats being toppled. NLSIU is doing nothing to keep upto its brand name. for NLSIU, it has been a downhill journey since the last three years.
NLSIU has the myth factor. The myth is slowly being destroyed.
regarding domestic firms, amss recruited 12 students each from nls, nalsar, and nujs.
this shows that the difference b/w the three is very less.
the difference manifests itself in the no. of foreign placements.
and if nlsiu was doing nothing to promote its brand, why are all the toppers chosing it?
a myth. yeah well, maybe..the difference is very less in terms of quality, and thats where the better brand wins.
What brand name? Might have had some, but today? think again !
Did you not see your college website where they have put your SBA Vice President's accomplishment? With a photo and everything? Just for getting his article published in NLIU Law Review?
Quoting the myth called NLSIU:
NLSIU can't match NALSAR's infra.
NLSIU can't match NUJS' faculty and location.
Placements are neck to neck in all three.
NLS offers nothing vis-a-vis NALSAR and NUJS.
Earlier top top 54 would go to NALSAR.
That now 5-6 students will be going to NUJS/NALSAR is a good trend. People will take note. The rise and rise of NUJS and NALSAR has already made a dent into NLSIU's hegemony!
NLIU Bhopal had shit recruitments this time! NLUJ was much much better!
What were you thinking CLAT aspirants? Did you leave all your brains on the CLAT desk?
Quoting J:
Good going NUJS! Congratulations! :)
CLAT 2010 - It closed at 205 Rank(1st List) with 78 candidates.
2nd list - 242
CLAT 2011 - It closed at 196 Rank with 83 General candidates.(2nd list unlikely to go much higher)
Share rate of NUJS has increased drastically over last few years.
Concerned young lawyer
cheers.
NLUJ isn't in the league baby!
NALSAR with 44 general seats places more than that.
all law colleges are soon gonna have the 50 per cent quota..
:D
yawn I am sick of this self-boasting.
BABAJI bane baboo.....
They call it a "reading room". Libraries have books and space, this college has a small hall with a few donated books. (And lots of Leftist literature)
LI sure enjoys it and maybe that is what is keeping the site going - the sensationalized headings are just fodder for people to pounce on and argue... I was really hoping that this website would be made appealing to mature readers and actual lawyers - Kian: if you and your team care to know, there are amazing and interesting deals happening out there, and NO - that is not a lead to make a forum for 1st and 2nd year associates of Indian law firms to start fighting about whose *&%$ is bigger.... Please bring in interesting and exciting news - that 1st and 2nd year students and lawyers alike can enjoy and benefit from, and also make this a forum where people stay abreast of legal news... not just placements and college admissions.
No doubt, your attempt is to present a complete picture and I appreciate your efforts in compiling college placements data, but please make this a little sane by disallowing comments... it frankly makes me, as I am sure it does a lot of slightly more mature people, who have passed out from law schools a fair number of years back, quite disgusted to see the silly bickering.... I know some guys are going to come and say "well... why don't I just stop reading this site"... and my response is, I read it because I like to know the news, but news should be presented in a manner that does not sensationalize and instigate petty squabbling.
My two cents for what its worth... Cheers!
You should realise more than 50% of the content on LI is not inter law school comparison related. Its a different thing that these meaningful articles attract much less comments in comparison to the mudslinging prone ones.
We get so much feedback from students who love reading the comments as a bit of harmless fun. And because it is mostly their voice that gets heard in the comments, perhaps we often assume that the comments are a niche for them and those who don't enjoy comments never read them.
On the other hand, I can understand that they are a waste of time and somewhat frustrating for more serious readers. But can more insightful and as lively discussions be had on these subjects if we moderate more heavily to block anything insulting, or would it just turn into a bunch of dry platitudes?
In response to your point we have introduced the hiding of comments by default, for example, to keep such discussions confined to only those who really wish to read them. But short of disallowing comments completely, which would upset a large number of law school readers who are a large audience of our law school articles, I do not see an easy solution.
I do harbour the hope that all this transparency - much of which is still very new - will contribute to all law schools one day seeing things more rationally and some of this fighting toning down.
And perhaps the last two weeks have been particularly vitriolic because of the 'high stakes' of the CLAT selections around the corner and the lobbying by college students trying to show that they are not as bad as others say or to entice the best students.
Now that the selections are over and the dust will settle, maybe discourse will be more civilised?
After all, there are only so many ways that people can say 'my college is better than yours' before it gets boring, no?
Perhaps I am wrong or my approach is not correct. I would be grateful for suggestions and more feedback as ever.
Best regards
Kian
I do not like to think that we over-sensationalise news but all newspapers and publications do need to sensationalise news to some extent to make it interesting to readers (or at least what hacks thing readers are interested in).
Otherwise our headline here should have read: "The CLAT preferences have been announced today". I would not want to read that story, nor would it be very informative.
We therefore try to pick angles that will make readers ask questions, provoke some thought or surprise and make readers want to learn more. All journalists will be guilty of that to some degree but it is unfortunately part of the profession.
Take The Economist, for example, a publication far superior to Legally India, where a headline about Italy's PM Berlusconi yesterday read: "The man who screwed an entire country." It may be sensationalising but I wanted to read more when I saw it.
NUJS knows it all:
NLS is a myth.
They haven't been to Nalsar but they know of their faculty.
HNLU is a failed institute.
NLIU is not going places.
NUJS. GOD HATH SPOKEN. Wait for the bubbl burst guys. Startups are well just upstarts.
Closest anyone comes to pulling off an argument in favor of NLS (the usual retort being "NLS is great well.. uhh.. because it iss NLS.. that's what we heard when we came here.. oh crap, aren't we the best?").. and what do you have to say? Wait for OUR bubble to burst?
Great argument my friend =D! That's a great argument indeed!
PS
For faculty comparison, use the internet. It's been around a while. Use it. And Noojies aren't very interested in whatever you had to say about NLIU / HNLU. We're eyeing that top spot that you'd been holding before we came around.
NUJS has a special course in their 1st year - The History of National Law Schools.
After the course they're asked to start 10 blogs per batch and prepare their own rankings based on that where they modify certain parts as if they'd been to the past as Doctor Who.
NALSAR kids are also taught the art of discreet persuassion by secret phone calls.
i) NLSIU is numero uno because of its rich history (since 1987) and the students that join this institution.
ii) Among the next established i.e. NLIU (1997) and NALSAR (1998) I consider NALSAR to be slightly ahead because of its location (hyderabad) and the efforts made by Prof. Ranbir Sing (its first director). However, in terms of academic, I consider NLIU Bhopal to be better because of the trimester system (similar to NLSIU) which keeps the students on their toes, if not for 5 years than at least for 4 and half years. In terms of placement NALSAR is better, however, one must not forget that out NLIU has a 50% state quota and inspite of that it is able to place 80% of its students on a consistent basis. Overall, though, NALSAR is ahead despite of being established a year later.
iii) I have never noticed students from NLIU joining issues with the fellow students from WBNUJS and NLUJ on the acerbic comments made by them. Anyone who is a regular to LI would have noticed the repeated attempts made by a few students from WBNUJS and NLUJ to belittle everything about NLIU. According to me, by not choosing to reply or take umbrage of their comments, students from NLIU come out smarter and sanely.
iv) Next established was NUJS in 2000. Has without doubt the best location advantage and faculty. Calcutta or Kolkata has to be the intellectual and cultural capital of India. They are a potential threat to NLSIU's number one position. However, the students can do without self publicity though.
v) Then came NLUJ in 2001. The students are good and the infrastructure is even better. The students can do without self publicity though.
You say:
I have never noticed students from NLIU joining issues with the fellow students from WBNUJS and NLUJ on the acerbic comments made by them.
How can u be so sure that the acerbic comments against NUJS and NLUJ in the various LI discussion threads are not from NLIU students?
Bottomline: Anonymous comments on LI are not the best way to judge the students of any institution. We'd all expect a lawyer with experience such as yours to not be so presumptous.
Quoting Neutral:
At present, its doing nothing to improve itself; whether in terms of faculty, research or any other thing.
The future trend of its growth will be downwards.
stop trolling u J.A, no one is interested in you or ur NUJS.
but kid whats with you guys.. do you really need to hype it up.. is your Director not enough ??
NLU Delhi.. NLU Delhi.. We're coming up, We're coming up..
Why do you need OUR approval ?? That is SOME insecurity you guys have..!! :D
Rome was not built in a day. Heard of it? NLUD is promising...but still it has a long way to go.
Quoting 1:
Dude do you go by the Outlook rankings? I mean, really? :o Are you really that dumb?
seriously if you think rank 6 is worth being quoted here then you're really really dumb. if i were you, i'd want to bury my head in the sand and say that outlook DID NOT rank us this year. dont let people know that you were ranked so low
Better try next time :)
NUJS HAS GAINED YES YES
FROM RANK 8 TO RANK 6
HAHAHA
a little dyslexic maybe.. 6 seems like 1 to them. but they are right. they have gained. I'm regretting having picked this place after these rankings came out.LOOK AT WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT YOU:
Outlook ranked ILS Pune in third place but NLIU Bhopal was by far the fastest climber, jumping from tenth to fourth this year.
NUJS saw the biggest drop in Outlook's rankings to fifth place this year.
it may be fun for you to get better ranks in clat and clearly you are jumping with joy but dont do it at the cost of a student's career by portraying wrong info.
Anyways, Nice attempt to make your college reputation better. Where are you from ? RGNUL? No, NO, I think NLIU. No, No may be CNLU
