India set new world mooting records this weekend after the Price Media Law moot trophy came home third year in a row, this time through JGLS Sonipat, as Nalsar Hyderabad became the first Asian law school ever to submit the best memorial at Hong Kong’s Vis East moot.
Herbert Smith Freehills-sponsored Mooting Premier League (MPL) season 5 top teams, NLSIU Bangalore, NUJS Kolkata, NLU Delhi and NLU Jodhpur, all feasted on points through various honourable mentions during this weekend of the tier 1 Vis East and the tier 2 Price moot.
Oxford Price
JGLS speakers Bani Brar and Mohan Krishna, and researcher Ronak Talati bested the Oxford University on their home turf after, as Krishna put it, a “nailbiting” round. The “most interesting and enjoyable experience” of the team was its quarter final round face off against the Singapore Management University, he said.
“The Indian style of mooting is really a question and answer session rather than a presentation so it was a refreshing change. It came with its own ups and downs. The judges were really well-versed with the facts of the case so it was an altogether different level to argue. One can’t bluff or cite something more than what it actually is,” he commented, adding: “It was our first international moot outside the country and we were not ready for not being faced with questions every other second. It was a law school from New York [whose] presentation style [involved having] a ready speech, we were still getting used to it.”
“Two rounds into it, everybody adapts to everybody’s style. [Moreover] the judges were really diverse too. We had judges from three different jurisdictions in the final rounds,” said Krishna.
Krishna said that central to JGLS’ “evolving” mooting culture was the principle to expose as many students as possible to mooting. “So we are now also participating in lower rung moots. We are proactively trying to participate in every moot that comes our way.”
Amity Delhi made it to the Octa finals at the world rounds of Price this year while NUJS speaker Ramya won the third best speaker citation overall. Both achievements do not amount to any MPL points for the tier 2 moot.
NLU Delhi brought home the Price Media moot world rounds trophy last year, while Nalsar clinched it in 2012. Delhi was disqualified from the moot this year on cheating charges.
Vis East
Nalsar Hyderabad’s Harshit Neotia, Kartik Monga and Anupam Misra won the best memorial citation – a first for any Asian law school in the 11 years since the moot’s inception – after beating runners up Harvard Law School, and 97 other teams to it.
“Authorities [and] scholars who we quoted in our memorandum, came up and congratulated us,” said Neotia.
He added: “Since, Vis Memos are overtly long - arguments worth 35 pages long and memo 60 pages in total - I wouldn't say that we stood out in all the arguments. We had one argument which we were not quite sure of including it in the final memo since we felt that it was too far stretched. However, the argument made sense and it seemed ingenious. I think this worked in our favour. We had one Australian arbitrator, who specifically termed the argument as 'enterprising' to our team, after the awards banquet.”
Nalsar, however, did not break into any of the advanced rounds of the competition while NLSIU Bangalore finished a quarter finalist, also tying with NLU Jodhpur and Octa-finalist NUJS for honourable mention for Best Claimant Memorial. NLU Jodhpur won an Honourable mention for the Best Respondent Memorial as well.
NLU Delhi’s speakers won an honourable mention each for Best Speaker. Delhi made it to the round of 32 teams.
