The South Asia rounds began yesterday (21 November) and will conclude on Sunday (24 November) at NLU Delhi. The home team was disqualified only hours before the start of the moot, according to a discussion on Legally India’s forum.
A member of the moot’s organising faculty sent an emailed statement to Legally India, which noted: “When certain information concerning the NLU Delhi team participating in the 2013 South Asia Rounds of the Price Media Law Moot Court Competition was brought to our attention, the University and the Price Administration of the South Asia Rounds acted immediately since we are committed to upholding the highest standards of transparency and accountability.
“It was found that the team had unauthorised access to materials from last year’s (2012) competition and that this was technically a violation of the rules of the Competition. Therefore, the NLU Delhi team is not a part of this year’s South Asia Rounds.”
An anonymous email sent to Moot Court Societies (MCC) of various participating law schools alleged that there could have been a leak of information in a previous year of the moot’s qualifying rounds, calling it “the most balatant [sic] murder of ethics and principles I have ever witnessed”.
It is understood that an internal inquiry regarding the allegations is currently ongoing and will likely conclude within a week. Faculty members declined to comment further pending the outcome of the inquiry.
The college had been the host for the last two South Asia qualifying rounds for the Mooting Premier League’s Tier 2 world class moot that is held annually in Oxford. NLU Delhi won the world rounds of the moot last year.

Attempting to influence may amount to a criminal act and the perpetrators should be prosecuted if the facts permit.
Just because your failure of a college is unable to perform well in moots, doesn't mean that other colleges similarly lack merit. There are other institutions doing better than you, students far better than yourself. Do yourself a favour and accept that.
What about countless allegations against NLS and it's close ties to ISRO when every year they organize the funding rounds of Manfred Lachs? Never heard NLS reacting to it and withdrawing it's participation.
So all the detractors are suggesting that NLUD's mooting success at Manfred Lachs (world rounds), FDI moot (world rounds), Stetson World rounds 2013 and many other moots was a result of rigging and unauthorized means?
Please note that all these allegations are based on "ANONYMOUS" emails and "RUMORS". The action was only taken to maintain highest standards of transparency so that the other teams had no doubts about the fairness of the moot.
And seriously, it is so naive of people to suggest that a team could win at the World Rounds through rigging, are you suggesting that Oxford, one of the best Universities in the world, rigged the moot in favour of NLUD at the world rounds last year? That is the stupidest thing.
Please do not compare yourself to NLS. Or even NALSAR/NUJS, for that matter. Please do not! :)
And VC of NLU J claims that its students are the best in India! Everyone, including these students, know that its BS.
The allegation hasn't been made through an anonymous email. that email is clearly just bringing to light the state of affairs at NLU-D
Wrt Man Lachs, merely the fact that NLS wins the funding rounds does not indicate anything (just as it shouldn't that NLU D wins rounds). NLS does not have access to either the memorials or the bench memo of the competition which Asia-Pacific organizers only get. Moreover, please substantiate your claim of access to "unauthorized" materials if you have any proof. If you don't have proof, don't go around dragging other colleges into this mess.
@Kian, please note that there is nothing which warrants the publication of such an article without any evidence. An anonymous email could well have been sent out by anyone, and to be fair to NLUD, they withdrew their team. We know you are a staunch campaigner for truth to come out but that day is not far where you'll be in a lock up as a result of criminal defamation. You really need to review content your journalists post without any basis whatsoever.
You fool. Kian is just reporting what happened. You make it sound like he is passing judgment on the correctness of the decision taken.
If they wanted they could have not revealed this information and the competition could have gone on smoothly.
From NLU Delhi performances in all moots, there consistency has been amazing. Maybe a few students tried resorting to cheap tricks, but otherwise there speakers have given a good run for money to all good colleges.
I suspect they control Chinese judges too. How else will NLUD win Henry Dunant World Rounds? That too a bunch of 2nd years? And come on no way he doesn't control American judges too. NLUD wins three Nationals of Jessup and breaks in Advanced round all those three? wins the Baxter award for best memo? Five instances of speaker citations? Can't do without global reach of NLUD "unethical" dominance. So wish my college would atleast qualify for world rounds.
And how can we forget the NLUD team that won Manfred Lachs Asia-Pacific Rounds. God the Japanese are gone too. Everyone has a price.
Its all a facade. When they come to NUJS they fix Herbert Smith Judges and do well, they go to NLS and win NLS Arb., by fixing NLS judges. No one is left. Down with NLUD.
Your frustration is understandable. But your allegations are baseless. If I am not wrong, people from first year at your college went to NLS Arbitration and won it. So does that mean that you rigged it? If I am not wrong, this year at Christ National Moot, your team won best memo and speaker, surprisingly the drafter of the problem was one of your prof. So, that sound fishy too. But, one can't blame you without proof. So go against this particular team but you don't have any right to question all the teams of NLUD.
Also I'm from NALSAR, the Ranbir Singh times, and I know what the man is capable of, and what ethics mean to him.
The list you've made of all the mooting achievements of NLU Delhi only speaks about the high quality of students there. That is much more likely, than anybody going to all this trouble and having these many contacts to rig every single moot they've done well in.
Your college doesn't qualify because you people are just not capable. All the bitter and frustrated people here should just accept that.
Perhaps if you spent more time on your academics, than stalking the performances of NLU Delhi, you would do better.
Its so obvious that this has been someone written by an NLU D student pretending to be a NOOJIE. We at NUJS have real work man and have the upcoming exams to prepare for.
Care to clarify the actual facts?
I think Noojie's comment was being sarcastic and highlighting the fact that NLUD's achievements are NOT result of the fixing or rigging as it would be almost impossible to influence judges at Jessup , Red Cross , Man lachs or Oxford.
Kudos to NLUD for the transparency. And, yes, let us support them for the same. The college's past performance in moots is too superior to be bloated by an allegation which is still to be proved, and being overhyped.
How does my age matter here?
This wasn't ignorance of law. Not when you read in 'ethical violation' in the rules to mean possessing past years memorials without any precedent of such reading in.
Guess I was wrong.
Wait a sec. Am I?
Here, if all matters regarding entry, registration and submissions of teams are in the hands of Oxford (as is generally the case for all the bigger internationals where the mother institution directly handles registration and memo submission) and NLUD only charged with conducting the 'rounds'then, NLUD are not to be blamed. if otherwise, then it is definitely unethical on NLUD's part.
Yes it is, you have an issue?
It is just because you can rig moots but not recruitment. Other colleges which have done well in moots have superb recruitment track record.
Please see the last five years MPL ranking for NLS, NALSAR, NUJS, NLU (J). You will find they have done well in both moots and recruitment because these colleges actually work hard and the results are based on fair evaluation of their performance and not based on leaking confidential and private moot court material.
There is some sought of fairness that u have to keep when you are hosting such events. NUJS has been hosting herbert smith competetion. Has there been any complaint of being baised or leaking information? This is how a college should hold moot court competetion.
Any team which participates in this kind of competetion works like insane and if teams that host it have confidential information then it is highly unfair to other teams who have prepared and given about 3 months of there law school life in that competetion without knowing that one team won the competetion as they were aware of confidential material. Highly unfair and morally incorrect.
PS: know there will be numerous loyal law school fan who will object to what i have just said, but please think morally and decide if you were a receipent of such behaviour.
And the fact that NLU D is doing so well in moots and is right at the top with the best institutes is because of the work culture and the hard work put in by the students. Its no different than any other college.
Last year's material are of no relevance to this year's moot. This year's team had nothing to gain out of it. The steps taken by the college only shows the high standards maintained by the college.
