Exclusive: At least 41 final year NUJS Kolkata students in a 2012 graduating batch of around 95 have secured office-based jobs, including three training contracts abroad and numerous offers from Amarchand, Trilegal, Luthra and AZB and Bharucha.
Law firms and recruiters first began visiting NUJS campus in late June as part of the Campus Recruitment Committee (CRC) while others had made pre-placement offers (PPOs) to students.
Three students were offered training contracts with foreign law firms Linklaters and CMS Cameron McKenna and one other training contract offer was still expected, said members of the CRC.
As in the 2011 graduating batch at NUJS, this year too saw Amarchand Mangaldas leading the recruiter tally hiring 10 law graduates from the college.
Other law firms like Trilegal (7), Luthra & Luthra (6) AZB & Partners (3) and J Sagar Associates (JSA) (2) also hired multiple students from NUJS (see table).
In-house legal giant ICICI Bank hired three students while non-governmental research organisation PRS Legislative Research also recruited one student.
CRC student coordinator Kumar Ashutosh commented: “Though we were approached by law firms to conduct day zero recruitments earlier we made a conscious decision to delay the recruitment process until June-end so as to not affect students' internships.”
“We are pleased with the recruitments made so far as recruiters have hired students having a diverse academic record and [recruiters] have not necessarily hired students on the basis of their grades.”
CRC coordinator Ankit Thakur added that the CRC had “evolved a comprehensive strategy” and was on track to place the maximum number of students this year.
In April of this year 29 students each at NLSIU Bangalore and Nalsar Hyderabad secured job offers to start in 2012.
Name of recruiter | Number of 2012 batch NUJS students recruited |
Amarachand Mangaldas | 10 (of which 2 were PPOs) |
Trilegal | 7 (all PPOs) |
Luthra & Luthra | 6 (all PPOs) |
AZB & Partners | 3 |
Bharucha & Partners | 3 |
ICICI Bank | 3 |
J Sagar Associates (JSA) | 2 |
Tuli & Co | 1 |
Economic Laws Practice (ELP) | 1 |
PRS Legislative Research | 1 |
Majmudar & Co | 1 |
CMS Cameron McKenna (TC) | 2 |
Linklaters (TC) | 1 |

Stop beating around the bush. If after 13 recruiters your top rankers (actual ranks or "RCC ranks") are still left, it probably means that they stink. Did they not apply for the same 28 campus jobs after they failed to get the 13 PPOs you're claiming?
"the CRC had 'evolved a comprehensive strategy'.."
That does not even make any sense. There's nothing path breaking which is being done here with the 'day zero' concept or in sending applications to the recruiters which recruit from most good campuses every year. Chances are, the recruiters would themselves be approaching these committees.
Besides, if I'm not mistaken, the NUJS CRC is just blindly following the system which NLS / NALSAR implemented earlier this year which I read about in one of the comments.
LI - From what I understand, ELP doesn't usually visit campuses (or they weren't the regular visitors in my time). An offer from a Legislative Research organization on campus is quite a remarkable feat to my mind because it's more common to see students join law firms first and then look at policy work and almost no organizations offering policy experience visited campuses. There I commend the CRC. I think LI should focus on more such stories and encourage students from all law universities in the process.
Tuli is not a job worth boasting about, so I won't bother going into that. (It's not a job students from top colleges compete for.)
Wasn't Khaitan & Co also visiting campuses early this year after their stupendous salary hike in the year before?
PRS did not visit campus and does fantastic work. ELP does the best trade law work in India and Tuli is the leading insurance law firm. Its all about what a student wishes to pursue. You probably dont have the same freedom in the rubbish college you belong to.
You have nothing but your ignorance to blame for such comments. Not everything is about an AMSS.
Are you blind or just stupid?
Mr/Ms BS said "PRS.. remarkable feat... There I commend the CRC"..
"ELP doesn't usually visit campuses... IN MY TIME"
PS - you must be psychic to know that BS is from AMSS considering he didn't mention it.. the bias makes one think - Sour grapes, Mr Nailer?
PPS - so you can't comprehend plain English, and you didn't address any of his points. some funny 'nailer' you are.
After the 'rolling recruitment' process implemented by NUJS in the years before, NUJS was the first to host more than just 2 firms on campus on the same day in the last couple of years. Great, successful experiment, which paid off last year (reported on LI and other websites too). Believe me, coordinating and keeping all firms equally interested requires strong organization. But, I don't think hosting 6 firms on the same day is a good idea for any college.
since last year NUJS has been having better recruitment than NLS and NALSAR (only edge NLS had over nujs was in international recruitment.) thats result of a smart strategy - your dumb head wont comprehend i suppose. it involves, strategically planning internships from 4th year, for example. also involves handling student expectations and firms in a smart way.
toppers without jobs? did it occur to you that they may be waiting for something better? maybe some of them just prefer PSU jobs, or they'd like to be general counsels? dont judge everyone by your own standards, they are not really that high.
and if you want to express doubts about superior recruitment of NUJS, please compare last years reports. Kian, when r u coming out with the recruitment comparison table?
PPOs after internship are a matter of good work PLUS GOOD LUCK and depends on firms own recruitment strategy for that plan.
APART FROM THAT same recruiters go to all top n-colleges. i heard KOTAK, IDBI, HDFC and 1 more bank will go to most colleges soon including NUJS.
you are right that some amount of good strategy helps get good placement. getting a job in 9-10 firms mentioned in the report is textbook stuff - 1 internship and get PPO or wait for 1st day of internship or go for VS. what extraordinary strategy is needed?
i will judge everyone by my standard. i went through this process. i have seen this process up close in a college ranked higher than urs and got a job that your topper friends did not get.
this year is EASY 100% recruitment for any good college.. its about who can finish first and get better quality recruiters. considering capability of ur toppers i think nujs will be after nls and nalsar.
Just because someone of your batch didnt sit doesnt mean that others do not sit. Before last year, one pass out didnt sit for placement. Instead he started hi own LPO, and along with him few opted out for LLM course.
And, do let us know the name of that Big Firm where NUJS students have not been recruited till now, and you are working there.
There are other places too to show frustration.
"considering capability of ur toppers i think nujs will be after nls and nalsar"....!!!!!!
Making me sadder !!
I am a NALSARite and it has been a long time that we have been fighting with each other, let's come together and take the standard of legal education beyond running after these petty firm jobs,,,,
when it comes to recruitment, it is becoming impossible to beat NUJS :)
Are you not guilty of making a rather tautological argument when you say that the top law schools are juvenile in their attempt to establish their pedigree via placements while you have tried to justify the greatness of your alma mater in terms of the success rate at the civils. Why are you trying to create a divide which essentially reads: NLUs for firms and University Law Departments for civils? This, dear sir is a most ill - informed divide to draw. Your comment reeks of a certain disdain for three things: your alama mater, National Law Schools and the Civils themselves when you say that "an IAS or PCS or a PCS(j) is always one step ahead than you morons". You are directly abetting the misuse of position held by the deserving candidates who clear the exam, regardless of their educational origins.
This report is simply one about recruitment figures and not about starting a senseless debate about which is better: NLUs or University Legal Departments. Read and understand the context my friend.
Good Luck with your civils preparations my friend and may the lord grant some passable English and common sense to you.
Can anyone explain the reason?????
What's this guy done that makes him legendary? It seems that each of the 3 top n-schools have had (more or less) the same regular recruiters. Getting a job in today's market for an average student at these law universities is a cake walk. Market is expanding. There are hardly any firms which would not recruit. 2009 - recession year. Getting a job - hard. 2010 - also hit by recession. 2011 - recession over, but apart from top firms, cautious hiring by others. 2012 - boom year, every one will hire. mark these words. 100% recruitment months before the year ends.
hahaha
and 20 MORE jobs since jun 28,2011...
which other college can claim this record?
From my past experience in "some" RCC, I would advice you guys to hedge your options, call as many law firms and companies as possible and do go for mid-sized and boutiques.
Hope
Dude, the odd 34 placed include hell lot of low rankers !
Wish all the law students graduating from the class of 2012 all the very best for their future
Famous??? What is that supposed to mean?
Answer: NONE
says it all.
NUJS started in the year 2000, and it was based on 5 yr LLB degree program.
Either improve you research skills or calculation skills. But, I dont think your college has failed to do so.
Yes, 2003 was the year when NUJS Vienna Moot Court.
NUJS is only 6 years old, so hopefully you should wait for a year or two to see NUJS Alum hitting partnership in the big law firms...
And who cares if ILS placements have started? Hardly a college that matters...
I am only stating a fact. This year lot of not-so-deserving students got placed in big law firms on Day0/PPOs. Those placed in [...] include flunkers in Banking Law. Lol.
A lot of top ranked students have not got placed despite having the grades, moots and papers.
Middle Rankers are also hanging in the air.
This is not a good signal the way firms recruit students. It is all based on contacts. For instance, a non-male student at NUJS got a tier-1 firm (name withheld) only because she stated in her group interviews that her dad is a big shot (name withheld).
At the same time, law firms also need the hard working and more capable lawyers like you and I to do the dirty work. Once a client comes to them, who will do all the work?
SO if a top ranking student is truly as 'deserving' as you think he or she is, they would have gotten placed at one of the big firms as well. If they haven't been, then they truly need to introspect and be prepared to overcome whatever is their shortcoming to be able to perform better in other interviews instead of just blaming someone who got placed!
While they are at it, they should go slap the genius who came up with the idea of 6 simultaneous interviews (ref comment 1.1) to 'kick' start the recruitment.
Well, apart from the ill-functioning CRC that we have, there are certain snakes who disclosed other firms about day0 recruitment (no wonder they got several offers too)..
putting all these together, it pains me to say that nujs might have had good mooters and debaters but when it comes to a good person, none could be counted in.
could you elaborate?
As explained above, if a firm believes that it makes sense to recruit someone with contacts.. they bloody well should.. who are you to say anything..
An where i agree that every year a few jobs are given on that basis - 95% on the bais of ur ablities. And please understand that the grades you get is not indicative of that.. the same logic might apply to the high rankers.. by having a good relationship with the faculty some undeserving candita might have got better grades than a more deserving person.. so stop this case of sour grapes and try to get a good job.
i have met quite a few guys whose grades may be good but they are not the sorts we want working in a client facing job.. where some ppl who have low grades (even the so called flunkies) who are perfectly suited for the job...thats the reality and you have to deal with it
So why do you all have these "Only Top-Rankers-Apply" policy for internships?
You have to defend your point, and you will, no matter how viable the argument is?
And could you please give an explanation, why would certain law firm hire on contacts? Well, they should hire someone who deserves it? Who can deserve it more who had toiled 4 years and scored rank 7 or 8? Your rank is the best proof of your suitable candidacy?
Ramdev is not coming to campus. He is conducting a written test. The topic is "Corruption in Law Schools"
