NLUO VC Krishnamurthy resigns to join Pondicherry University as VC

Eight months-old NLUO Cuttack vice chancellor (VC) Dr Chandra Krishnamurthy will join as Pondicherry University’s (PU) VC this week, replacing Dr JAK Tareen.

The search committee that selected Krishnamurthy at PU comprised of North Maharashtra University ex-vice chancellor Dr RS Mali, Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi ex-vice chancellor prof GK Chadha and Anna University Tamil Nadu ex-vice chancellor prof M Anadakrishnan. [New Indian Express]

Krishnamurthy was appointed NLUO’s VC on 30 April, after her tenure as VC at SNDT Women’s University Mumbai ended. The post of NLUO’s VC was vacated after former VC Faizan Mustafa resigned mid-tenure to join Nalsar Hyderabad as VC.

In July Krishnamurthy scrapped the three-year joint LLM-PhD degree programme which was started by Mustafa in 2011, compelling one of the two enrolled students to discontinue instruction at the university in the middle of the academic year.

NLUO students and staff can best comment on Prof. Chandra Krishnamurthy's legal acumen and competency as the Vice-Chancellor. She reduced NLUO to a degree college. Her incompetency gets validated when she is leaving NLUO within 6 months as she now gets appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the Pondicherry University. Law University not everybody's cup of tea. Professor coming from a traditional University who could never face students in the classroom except feeling pride in her law teaching of so called several years is such a misfit for any law university. Who made her law Professor in the first place. Traditional University can only bear such souls who never have to interact on legal issues and do not get exposed because of their poor capacities.

The real difference is made by VCs who understand that the new lawschools have certain expectations to meet and certain principles to adopt apart from Socratic teaching. The VCs who established the older NLUs like Madhava Menon, NL Mitra and Ranbir Singh were great chaps in most ways - they worked towards student involvement, accountability of faculty and placements. These are possibly the greatest assets of any institution as it creates an environment where everyone is answerable and equal and no one is powerful. Unfortunately, some of VCs focus on unnecessary student discipline, excessive faculty empowerment and also end up with poor placements. We need dynamic VCs who don't think like 'khap panchayat elders' to save the newer lawschools and change the Indian legal market.

How many NLU VC's are NLU passouts? Is MP Singh NLU passout? How many NLU teachers are NLU passouts? Most teachers in law schools are products of traditional universities. So you are bearing them and you will also continue do so in future.

No law university would have ever seen such a pathetic Vice-Chancellor. Never saw NLUO so happy in last 8 months. Basically, she realized that she can't survive at NLUO because here she got to work, she had to be accountable, at NLUO she had to talk in English, she had to talk about law (which she doesn't know a bit). Who heard of her before she joined NLUO. Any ever met her in any law conference organized in any law university since the time NLS B'lore got established?? She didn't take a single class at NLUO as she never knew anything... With the first opportunity she found escape ....she knew she can't survive at NLUO for 5 years. She is low on institution integrity as she leaving NLUO within 8 months. Pondicherry Univesity- take care- May god bless everyone there!!

Education system is also full of corruption. Prof. Krishnamurthy is very innovative. She wanted english faculty to conduct moot court in english subject at NLUO. Gem of a person. She managed stetson south India rounds so well that she could end up saying "moot court is very important extra-curricular activity". Very creative law professor. According to respected Prof. Chandra Krishnamurthy- Law University was formed to take away stress from the law students. I pray that Prof. Menon may never read this. Else he would go in depression. She also claims to be awarded - best law teacher. Where??? By whom???? Well my friends please never forget after Late Shri. Lal Bahadur Shastri, Prof. Krishnamurthy is most creative with quotes, as she says- Once a Teacher, Always a Teacher.

Dear Its all political...Let me now reveal the story behind her appointment...She established some link with Ms. Priya Dutta (Daughter of Late Sunil Dutta and congress MP) and through her she approached His Excellency the Governor of Odisha Sri Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare (congress men) who influenced the appointment of Madam.
Now, again she played a very safe and successfully. After UGC inspection she left university without informing anyone and without giving charge to anyone. She was running pillar to post (New Delhi-Mumbai-Pondicherry)again to workout logistics. See the search committee:
Dr M Anandakrishnan(A Tamilian), Prof. R S Mali (A Maharastrian) these two members were sufficient to search Madam Murthy.
Finally, file will go the same congress government, who owe her appointment in orissa. Political decision
A tamilian, brahmin, link with congress government, over and above a woman....all these are sufficient qualification to became a vice-chancellor. Scholarship does not matter otherwise professor Kolaskar was much ahead ....This is the state of affairs of higher education in India. I believe the judges of the High Court and academicians are also on the search/selection committee. How can such an appointment be wholly political? Can any one share the details of the search/selection committee and the process followed in making such selections/appointments in law schools. Probably, a PIL could be planned out if there are any infirmities in the system. We must give serious priority to maintain the quality of management/leadership in all law schools since huge public interest is involved. Otherwise, crores of public money that went into the establishment of such universities will be wasted.

Pondicherry University call Prof. Krishnamurthy soon. We have less time left for our placements. No one knows her in law firms, amongst law universities, amongst judges, etc.-call her soon..we have lots of work like finding genuine law professor who can teach and behave like a Vice-Chancellor not like some Jitender Law College Principal. Principal mentality. Are people sitting in Vice-Chancellor's selection committee so dumb that they can't see whom are they selecting or is this a major political game?

Recently i came across 2 media reports vis a vis Mrs. KrishnaMurthy and i am not much impressed about her administrative skills/acumen.
1- The Mumbai University Tribunal had set aside one of her Order to Remove Registrar, the Tribunal went on to say and i quote "The vice-chancellor seems to be taking shelter under the honourable Chancellor office’s letter confirming her action".
The Tribunal also held that "Through the fiat of a near unilateral administrative letter by the acting V-C without any authority in law, the impugned decision suffers from non-application of mind and consideration to the settled principles of standard code,"
Source: http://www.indianexpress.com/news/tribunal-sets-aside-acting-vc-s-order-to-remove-registrar/550896/0

2- When she was Acting VC at MU (September 2009– July 2010), There are instances of MU not following UGC guidelines 2009 for Docotoral Research. Its alleged that such compliance was being done to help some politicians. As the report says, Incidentally, her son's doctoral proposal was accepted by Mumbai University at its last RRC meeting.

I am shocked to see such negative comments. Prof Krishnamurthy is the BEST and a true diamond. She is an academician of great standing and a great administrator. She was popular among 99% of NLUO community. She always helped me and my friends.

Also the comment #8 saying that she wanted English faculty to conduct moot court in English subject is a LIE. She just wanted mooters to speak and write proper English so certain people with poor English and huge ego got upset and twisted her words.

A huge loss for NLUO. She should retain her place on the governing body.

My dear mate...I am also shocked that you are shocked. Let me clear your fundamentals:
First;your observation that "She is an academician of great standing" is actually not known to anyone as she has not taken any class till now in spite of repeated request by students and teachers. So how do you know this fact? May be that you have taken some private tuition at her residence.
Second;your observation that "She always helped me and my friends" has several implications. It this is true then for sure you belong to any categories: 1. Tamil, 2. Maharastra, 3. Group of five teachers (MMA RS)4.you wanted to meet for some cultural events etc. where she has developed some kind of expertise that even i would admit.5; you dont have any other work so you can wait for any amount of time at her chamber to meet her. Hope you are satisfied
Third; your sympathetic reply that "she wanted English faculty to conduct moot court in English subject is a LIE and She just wanted mooters to speak and write proper English" how do you know....but what a surprising and scholarly suggestion given by the VC to mooters, we came to know for the first time....this shows her academic standing.
Finally, that "certain people with poor English and huge ego got upset and twisted her words" has forced me to make it clear that you have definitely not attended any of the events/functions where she spoke on the podium, had it been you would not have made this comment.
What is truth, you can realize after seeing facebook and other social networking sites where students are expressing their views. after doing that your illusion that "She was popular among 99% of NLUO community" will also be clear.
You must have learnt "Res Ipsa Loquitor'...this is taught in first semester..it seems that you are not regular in the class...

I am also shocked by this discussion. And that is because the more relevant issues are being ignored repeatedly.
First;your observation that "She is an academician of great standing" is actually not known to anyone as she has not taken any class till now in spite of repeated request by students and teachers.
So only if she takes class will she become an academician of great standing? Has Amartya Sen taken class at NLUO? Has Upendra Baxi? And before you say they are not part of NLUO, let me inform that it is not the VCs job to take classes. Some people are doing it, but that is not the only benchmark to decide who is an academician of great standing. Past record is also a benchmark. Res ipsa loquitur applies here. And it is loquitur not loquitor, learn the correct spelling before you teach/preach to other people.
Second;your observation that "She always helped me and my friends" has several implications. It this is true then for sure you belong to any categories: 1. Tamil, 2. Maharastra, 3. Group of five teachers (MMA RS)
I don't know about 5, but I am not a part of any of the other categories. Despite that she has been as cooperative as possible. This is my experience also.

And about 5, have you tried meeting the vice chancellors of other bigger places, like for example BHU and HNLU? Have you been given instant admission every time? Isnt it possible she was just busy when you went to meet her?
Third; your sympathetic reply that "she wanted English faculty to conduct moot court in English subject is a LIE and She just wanted mooters to speak and write proper English" how do you know....but what a surprising and scholarly suggestion given by the VC to mooters
Fine, surprising and scholarly suggestion it may not be, but are you denying what Student has said? How do you know he is wrong?
What is truth, you can realize after seeing facebook and other social networking sites where students are expressing their views.
Have you counted the number of people who havent expressed their views on facebook?

Why compare Madam of Pondi with Nobel winners!!! You do not have to prove your insufficiency of knowledge regarding NLUO to the readers and writers.

Unfortunate for the society that both teachers and preachers have to have NECESSARILY either write or express what they think by voice otherwise they could be just "VINCENT".

Well, your count of 5 just proves the writer right whom you quoted so thank you for your ratification. Better than expressing your undeserved comments on the issue at hand, thank god its saturday so why dont you just "sleep over the issue for the night" and then think about what you have written and the authenticity of your completely ambiguous and ill placed quoted reply.

My dear friend you have gone too far...now i am sure that you belong to one of the five classes which i had mentioned..Otherwise it will not hurt so deeply. BTW my proposition was only this: A person's academic standing is known in following ways, one, either "he or she is good teacher" which you can easily prove by taking few classes, i was not saying that she should have taken classes regularly (though this should happen) but she did not take even a single class so we lost this opportunity of knowing the academic standing. Second, if a person is a prolific writer or has written so much that it is perceptible like Baxi and Sen (You should not have taken these two names because i think and you would also agree that its insult of both of them) but I tried actually to find out madam's writings in the journals/books but unfortunately couldn't, may be I am not a good researcher. Yes one of my friends told me that there is book which is published by some himalaya publ. If you have some literature please enlighten us by putting the link, it might help me in changing my opinion. Third, if person is a brilliant administrator, you know, I really tried to get some information about madam's administrative capabilities, but in spite of all my efforts I did not find any favorable report, instead some adverse reports are available, the links of some of these are put in some of the aforementioned comments. Please check it out. Out of these three methods the easiest is to prove inside the class by taking two-three classes but she chose not to. Please also do not compare it with BHU or any other central/state university where VCs dont take class but actually it my request to you that please do a small research about VCs of central and state universities....let us take example of Prof. Lalji Singh,(VC-BHU) he still takes classes..Professor Mitra, Menon, Vijaykumar, Venkat Rao, S.S. Singh, Paramjit Jaiswal, Gurjeet Singh ...Ranbir Singh..all of them takes classes. It may be justified for big universities but my dear friend the law schools were started for a different purporse where you are suppose to lead from the front. its all about passion...A real good teacher would like to take classes inspite of all busy schedule..
Yes I have not counted the no. of people who have not expressed their views on facebook....BUT dont you think that this also shows that they dont care about VC and that is why they are not expressing views...but you are free interpret it that they love madam....it seems like BJP's Feel Good Factor...but you know what happened in that election..but my friend i can just say..."Dil ko khush rakhne ka Galib ye Khayal Achha Hai"
My sincere advice...someone has rightly mentioned somewhere that its all networking and political game to get appointed in the university...so play a constructive role so that we can be part of some change..dont support wrong things...
My dear friend you have gone too far...now i am sure that you belong to one of the five classes which i had mentioned..Otherwise it will not hurt so deeply.
I won't be too sure of that. Forget the five classes, believe me I am not even in your part of the world, please check my IP address. About "hurting", maybe you overestimate your own potential.
BTW my proposition was only this: A person's academic standing is known in following ways, one, either "he or she is good teacher" which you can easily prove by taking few classes
Misleading. This way a person is known as an academician of standing only WITHIN an institution. Let me give you an example. As you had suggested, I had done little research on academic standing. To my surprise, I found that the VC of NALSAR, Prof Faizan Mustafa, who was predecessor VC of NLUO, had only published books from unheard of publishers like Kanishka Publishers and Institute of Objective Studies. His academic standing within NLUO is because of the classes he has taken. But what about the outside world? Surely he is known there also as an academician of standing? If his books are published by such vague publishers, how is he so well known? We can assume, through seminars, conferences and so on. And the same applies to Prof Chandra Krishnamurthy also. So I think you have read too much into her not taking classes, and that too in the 8 months that she has been at NLUO, when it was in a deep crisis. In other words, my friend, it is you who have gone too far.
I tried actually to find out madam's writings in the journals/books but unfortunately couldn't, may be I am not a good researcher.
Check (2008) 36 International Journal of Legal Information 245. It is published jointly from Cornell and Emory, as I could make it out. Perhaps you should try a little more.
Yes one of my friends told me that there is book which is published by some himalaya publ.
Please refer to my observations on Institute of Objective Studies. The same logic applies here.
but in spite of all my efforts I did not find any favorable report, instead some adverse reports are available, the links of some of these are put in some of the aforementioned comments. Please check it out.
In regard to adverse comments, have you seen this?

http://www.arabnews.com/node/297750

These have also been posted in the comments of Legallyindia in the past. What conclusions can we draw from it? The right ones or the wrong ones? Let us not be hasty in forming conclusions, my friend. Also it is all relative. Remember, when assessing the capabilities of the present NLUO vice chancellor, you have to see it in terms of what NLUO has experienced before.
let us take example of Prof. Lalji Singh,(VC-BHU) he still takes classes..Professor Mitra, Menon, Vijaykumar, Venkat Rao, S.S. Singh, Paramjit Jaiswal, Gurjeet Singh ...Ranbir Singh..all of them takes classes. It may be justified for big universities but my dear friend the law schools were started for a different purporse
I agree, all these might take classes. I notice you have missed out Prof Faizan Mustafa, he also too classes at NLUO didn't he? Now tell me, if they had faced 25% of the pressure Prof Chandra Krishnamurthy is facing, would they have considered themselves free to take classes? For a VC, taking classes is a matter of priorities. It may be important, certainly, but there might be other matters that are more urgent.
real good teacher would like to take classes inspite of all busy schedule..
That is only your opinion. It does not prove anything.
My sincere advice...someone has rightly mentioned somewhere that its all networking and political game to get appointed in the university...so play a constructive role so that we can be part of some change..dont support wrong things...
Given the kind of things I am hearing about NLUO faculty acting against the university's interests, I think those who are actually closer to the institution should practice what they preach.
