Khaitan & Co adding VoxLaw managing partner Udayan Choksi as a partner in indirect tax.
He will be based in Mumbai with an indirect tax team of one principal associate and one associate, and will work with the wider tax teams at Khaitan.
“With effect from 1st April 2021, I will step down as Managing Partner of VoxLaw to join Khaitan & Co,” he said. “We are excited by the opportunity to build on our core strengths of tax advisory and litigation, and I look forward to contributing to the growth of the indirect tax and trade practice at Khaitan & Co.”
Khaitan & Co executive director Amar Sinhji commented: “Udayan’s practice area also covers customs & international trade. This combined practice has tremendous identified growth potential in the short term. Udayan is a terrific addition to our firm professionally and culturally.”
Choksi said VoxLaw, which he had co-founded in 2012 and that had in 2015 briefly merged with Dhruva Advisors, would continue after his departure.
VoxLaw co-founder Ritesh Kanodia had stayed with Dhruva after the two firms demerged.
Choksi said: “VoxLaw was set up in 2012 as a boutique firm focusing on indirect tax and customs, across advisory and litigation. The last 9 years have been exciting and challenging, and it has been a matter of pride to see the firm and its partners recognised for our work.
“My partner Samir Kapadia, who has been with the firm since 2013, will take over leadership at Vox. I look forward to supporting Samir and our team in the transition. I also take this opportunity to thank our clients for their continued trust and encouragement.”
VoxLaw would have around 20 fee-earners after his departure, Choksi said.
Khaitan has hired two partners laterally this year:
- L&L Partners IP partner Nirupam Lodha,
- IndusLaw partner Tanu Banerjee,
