Luthra corporate to ‘grow up’ in Mumbai with DSK Legal partner

Luthra & Luthra has hired DSK Legal associate partner Deepak THM as a private equity and M&A partner in its growing Mumbai office, taking the total headcount to five partners.

Deepak had been with DSK Legal since 2003, before which he was at Nishith Desai Associates having graduated from NLSIU Bangalore in 1999.

Luthra & Luthra senior partner Mohit Saraf said: “The aim is to make Bombay as a full service firm with multiple partners and bandwidth. Right now we are pretty well positioned on finance side but partners on M&A and PE are pretty overleveraged.”

“Deepak is definitely a senior level hire who can run his own deals.”

Luthra & Luthra has been trying to expand its corporate strength, particularly in Mumbai, following the May 2010 hire of former Clifford Chance senior associate Sudipta Routh as a corporate partner.

In February Delhi finance partner Aniket Sengupta relocated to Mumbai to further shore up the office’s strength.

“There is a requirement today – we are pretty much stretched at the firm,” admitted Saraf, adding: “The next hires will be on tax side and IPR side. Our aim is to significantly grow up in Bombay.”

Deepak said: “I will be working with the private equity relationship and that’s the same kind of work I’ve been doing here at DSK. Luthra has a relatively small PE / M&A team in Mumbai which is expanding and looks like a good opportunity.” He is set to start on 1 October.

DSK Legal managing partner Anand Desai confirmed Deepak’s departure and wished him well.

After Deepak’s departure, DSK Legal has a total of 75 lawyers, of whom 10 are partners and four are associate partners, according to Desai.

#4 Are you trying to be sarcastic? Or is the following sentence not clear enough:

"After Deepak's departure, DSK Legal has [or will have]a total of 75 lawyers...."

Luthra & Luthra: After I "grow up" in Mumbai, I want to become AMSS (like the little Maruti - now Nano - who wanted to become a Merc when it grew up).

Considering DSK has found its name on this forum, only a few times, let them enjoy this limelight, (last I recollect was the IndBharat deal), even when it speaks of some one quitting. AMSS, AZB, Luthra, JSA, Khaitan and Trilegal all are frequently emntioned, but DSK. No. 7, do not waste your time replying to No. 5. nO. 5, DSK has 750 lawyers. enjoy your workforce.

Let us not get into which firm is good place...very subjective and differs from individual to individual. If I am doing very well in my firm, i would say that my firm is the best and all other firms are crap. If I am not doing well, I would say that even my firm is crap.

I think I had read in a piece written by Aldous Huxley that men are meant to be pugnacious; even after earning truck loads of money , they cant stop bickering

we just need some excuse to bicker. First the law students fighting over their colleges and then these so-called adults fighting over firms.

anonymity really brings out the idiot in some people.

I agree, this is just pathetic beyond belief.. The younger generation of lawyers are following in the footsteps of the older generation seamlessly..

yes, DSK is a good law firm. I know someone who has been working in the Bombay office for the last 8 yrs non-stop and doing quite well. Go for it and apply.

@7 @9- This is the problem with people like you having half knowledge.Since when LI has become an authority to show which law firm is doing well and which firm not. Just because LI reports 5-7 transactions out of 50 big transactions it doesnt mean only AMSS

@20-DSK Legal is definitely in top 7 firms in Mumbai and it's an excellent place to learn as you get lot of exposure..I know people who started as a fresher and who have worked or still working for over 5-6 years.

@21 you know someone who has been working for last 8 years "non-stop"?? When does he sleep???? #20, please do not apply to this firm, you will die of fatigue !!!

dsk legal is a great learning opprotunity only if you work in Anand Desais team. also starting salaries are not very high at all but Anand is a veritable storehouse of legal knowledge. spend a year working with him . don't expect a fun work atmosphere though.they dont like it if you smile in dsk. in a nutshell go there to learn from anand but do not expect anything more.

I like the response from # 24 and agree with the views expressed. If that be so then please dont apply, as fatigue can indeed be a problem. I think everyone forgets to sleep when working in law firms and doing corporate law work. Atleast, that is what I felt I went through when working for ZM. Goodluck!

#25 has obviously worked in DSK. I agree wholeheatedly.[...] the only reason to be in DSK is to learn from Anand.warning: do not smile or look away form your computer if a partner is around! The other partners except sajit suvarna ( awesome at real estate) basically bask in the glory of anand desai.

Nothing about Deepak here and his market reputation. Please throw some light on that.
