LKS opens in Kolkata with ex-Amarchand Niloy Pyne for 30 headcount target

Pyne: Cal calling
Pyne: Cal calling

Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan (LKS) is opening an office in Kolkata under former Amarchand Mangaldas partner Niloy Pyne, who left in July 2012 to practice independently.

LKS Delhi joint partner Badri Naryanan confirmed on Monday that the firm was opening in Kolkata but declined to comment further at the time of going to press.

The office is slated for opening within two weeks.

Pyne, who graduated as a lawyer from Delhi University in 1988, was a partner-in-charge at Paras Kuhad & Associates Kolkata from 2006 to 2008, at Khaitan & Partners Kolkata from 2008 to 2010 and a partner at Amarchand Kolkata from 2010 to 2012.

He said: “[We will] rely on the tremendous goodwill and expertise of the firm, in particular Mr Lakshmikumaran, in the field of taxation, and try to use the firm’s substantial expertise in other fields such as corporate, sports and intellectual property as well.”

He added that a small team was lined up to start the firm’s office, which he would aim to have an initial size of around 10 to 12 lawyers.

“For the time being, if you look at all the firms in Kolkata none of them have a strength of more than 40. So the Kolkata market for the time being should not cater to more than 20 or 30 lawyers [in a law firm], even keeping the East and the North East in mind.”

“For Kolkata, 30 is just perfect,” Pyne said about the firm’s possible size in five years.

Last year LKS opened a second office in Delhi and an office in Pune in April, hired former Bharti Enterprises general counsel Vijaya Sampath, and moved to a bigger Bangalore office in June 2012. In May 2013, it promoted litigation practice head Anil Dutt to partner, and hiked fresher base pay to Rs 7.2 lakh.

Well done lks and niloy sir. Lots of expectations. Kolkata needs such big firms. Lks is the 1st real big firm to enter kol in a very very long time. Maybe after AM.

Hey, one fine reason to return to good old Kolkata from the lonely, distant, drab shores of UK !

LKS opening an office in Kolkata is a "fine" reason to return to Kolkata? LKS is neither a top tier firm nor a great paymaster - pay in Kolkata is likely to be even less. Not to mention that LKS opening shop in Kolkata would not really change "good old Kolkata" in any way. Rofl.

LKS is in for a reality check, just like AMSS (virtually non-existent practice) and other national firms discovered, although I dare-say LKS are better prepared because they started in Chennai. Kolkata is a market with zero standards of quality, compliance and respect for transactional lawyers (who are clubbed with solicitors and post-box practices). Fee rates are absurd (even by Indian standards). Firms like Khaitan have pervasive influence because of community bonds, decades of presence and intricate links to the small business community. A 30 lawyer practice in Kolkata is almost impossible, unless they are prepared to have a radically different remuneration structure. No wonder that one of the few corporate lawyers who has been successful in Kolkata, Krishnava, has also moved to Mumbai. Unfortunately, they have started on the wrong foot, Pyne is a veteran firm jumper, who did not add any value or growth to the practices he has been involved in, either Paras Kuhad (again defunct in Kolkata), Khaitan and particularly AMSS.

You forgot to mention that "corporate" work in Kolkata means real estate (and due diligence means title search).

Heres what Pyne said when he joined AMSS

"I've seen the kind of opportunities that are there which are immense actually – we are looking at Kolkata as a gateway to the East, in all spheres, including real estate and a lot of mining work… I will be expanding the business in the East and heading up the arbitration efforts, including international arbitration, litigation mining, real estate, non-core corporate and everything else."

They are going to be re-locating a few people plus they really are looking for some really experienced lawyers/chartered accountants for their office. They intend to handle principally indirect taxation. And yes they have been hiring for this office for quite sometime now.

India will surely not offer you the "please" and the "thank yous" that you must be used to after so many years in the UK. Instead, there will be desi abuses being hurled around even in Kolkata, which has gone to the dogs in that department as well. You will also not get decent accommodation or Tesco/M&S like stores for your grocery shopping or a decent wine for 10 pounds. India still cannot think beyond white and brown bread, unless you go to 5-star bakeries. LKS is not any reason to return to Kolkata. Neither is Amarchand. You will be happy to return only if there is something that you really and passionately want to do on your return, which you cannot presently do in the UK.

Critics will of course and rightly criticize. But those who do not attract criticism are non entities. Those who have no critics have no admirers also. Its better to have fans and critics rather than having none. Pyne surely has ardent fans and fierce critics. That may a good thing actually. Lets wait and see how he guides LK&S at Kol.

Know Niloy since his early days in Khaitan. Remarkable contacts with govt, political entities & industry. Superb in strategies. Very quick to grab the moot point. He just has to dig in & not lose interest quickly. LKS maybe just right for him as he needs flexibility to be at his best. Wonder why he doesn't start on his own !

A life of contentment is not all about fancy bread, good wine and luxury (or cheap, if you prefer Primark) clothes. Not for everyone, that is. It is trite that what makes one happy is singular to the individual. As with most things trite, it is also true. For some, happiness comes from living in their homeland, with all its associated joys and ills. Good food, the company of old friends, a morning spent reading in a childhood home on a sunny day, all of these can count for much. Or very little, depending on one's outlook. Conversely, abundant corruption, unreliable (and often simply non-existent) infrastructure, and a severe work-life imbalance can also matter. Having spent many years abroad, earned (and saved) well, holidayed in many exotic locations and owned property, I can tell you in all honesty that I have never been fully content these past several years. Always, a sense of dislocation, always one foot out of the door. Perhaps, had I stayed in India and done none of these, I would have been discontent for the not doing. Be that as it may, as time passes I truly feel that the material wants in life, while important, are easily trounced by the communal and familial. I may be mis-remembering, but I think it was Chanakya who wrote that blessed was the man (person, now) who could enjoy a successful career in his own country. I suspect Aakriti feels the same way. I know I do.

Let us get a couple of things straight on board :

1. Calcutta is not a place where you run a 30 people practice. If you are looking at a tax incentive practice, u can maybe sustain a partner plus four / five people shop and that is all. Nobody in Calcutta will pay for a 30 people practice.

2. The scene on the ground in Calcutta is very base oriented. Even as the so-called gateway to the east bullshit every tom opening a shop touts out.. it is that.. bullshit. Here is the fact.. AMSS is history in cal, Khaitan rules the roost. The place is virtually run by the table lawyers in Old Court house st and the closet CA(s) coming out of the woodwork. Without them, nothing seems to work. The boutique firms are doing their best to dent the market and set up a practice. But for the pay they get from the clients (5K per document drafting), moolah is tough. The big 4s also are trying to sell the gateway to the east story and establish the tax practice there and because of their so called network and ties with audit teams (CA' - CA bhai Bhai) are making some money. Even they are struggling to sustain their business. For anybody else, good luck getting any grass on this barren field

3. I will leave a comment on the LKS practice. Gone are the days of the great LKS, Parthasarathy etc who used to give individual attention to cases. Now they appear only for select high profile cases. The new kin of LKS lawyers are bordering on irritant, appear quite slow to grasp issues at hand, write opinions which stink of bad English and grammar .. and sometimes lack knowledge about basic court procedure.. (how i know ? hmm.. I know)... The glory days of LKS, Sridharan, Parthasarathy, Sivasdassan etc are over.. No offence to any body but your new breed of lawyers suck and any boutique firm will give you a run for the money at half the price charged ......

4. So , good luck LKS on this so called venture. Money would have been wisely spent if you had invested it on mentoring your brood rather than squandering it on pipe dreams..

I agree completely, the only time KCo has been given a run for its money in Kolkata was when Krishnava (initially at AMSS and then at Argus) decided to do so. With Krishnava recently having relocated to Mumbai, KCo has very little to content with in the city. AMSS with its Partner, Corp head and RE head are nothing to contend with. The battle LKS will have to fight will be with Argus, if at all. Doubt Krishnava will relent easily on home turf.

So, rumour has it that Exec Partner, Shivadass' son Prashant, has now joined the LKS fraternity. Daddy/uncle syndrome back again? He made news as an acclaimed MCS Convenor for Christ when he literally put them on the map with some moots (not winning one ever), especially when he pulled Anti trust out of NLUJ and served it on a platter in Christ (now we know why!).

We already know this is a family run unit. Sounds like the ropes are being handed over completely now!
