Cairn GC Nitin Banerjee elevated to Vedanta group GC, plugs gap of 3+ years post-Mukesh Bhavnani

Banerjee takes over Vedanta group GC function

Cairn Oil & Gas general counsel (GC) Nitin Banerjee was elevated to group general counsel at Vedanta Limited on 20 December, finally filling in the gap created by his predecessor Mukesh Bhavnani’s exit more than three years ago.

Banerjee, alongside the four other senior lawyers within the Vedanta group, have been part of a Group Legal Council, which has been driving the group legal vision and agenda for the group.

He explained that his remit at Vedanta when he joined in 2017, in addition to being the GC for the oil and gas business, was to also contribute to some of Vedanta’s strategic, high level and key legal matters.

He will be reporting to the heads of Vedanta’s 12 businesses in India. He will also continue heading Cairn’s legal function until the addition of a successor in that role.

On being asked about the Group Legal Council, Banerjee mentioned that it would continue to exist and contribute to the group’s legal vision.

He commented: “I am delighted and very excited to take on the role of Group General Counsel at Vedanta. As an integral part of its DNA, Vedanta believes in trusting and elevating internal talent to assume bigger and broader roles. It truly believes that its success is due to the commitment, passion and contribution of its employees and I am proud to be given an opportunity to contribute.”

“Vedanta is a one of the best places to work for a lawyer not only because Legal is a key enabling function, but because it offers opportunities to lawyers to work on high quality & important legal issues in regulatory, corporate commercial, transaction and policy space. Additionally working on corporate governance, ethics and compliance helps one add value to the organisation. Vedanta is at the cusp of its next phase of growth and it can’t be any better time for me to take on this mammoth responsibility to create shareholder value for a globally diversified natural resources company he added.

A Lucknow University 2001 alumnus, Banerjee had joined Cairn as GC in November 2017 after having headed the legal functions at Vodafone and British Gas and a stint at J Sagar Associates (JSA).
