Vedanta power head, Jasmeet Wadehra, expands remit, now heads Sesa Goa biz legal arm

Jasmeet Wadehra role widens from Vedanta power to Sesa Goa

Vedanta Resources head legal for power Jasmeet Wadehra is now also heading the Vedanta group's Sesa Goa unit, which includes four different verticals within the group.

Wadehra had joined Vedanta as the legal head for power in October 2015. Since December 2017, he is now also in charge of its iron ore mining, steel, ports and shipping verticals.

He heads a team of around 15 lawyers and divides his time between Goa for strategic issues and Chandigarh and Delhi for managing the company's litigation. He told us that his deliverable now includes navigating through strategic issues of the business like mining caps in the states of Goa and Karnataka, regulatory restrictions like in the e-auction process, issues of export duty removal on iron ore exports, generally facilitating the company’s environment and sustainability goals and expansion and growth of the business through organic expansion, new projects and acquisitions in addition to helping the government in creating a new policy framework for development and efficient management of natural resources through the national mineral policy.

He said that the current role is a combination of his previous responsibility in Power business to which the Iron ore mining, Ports, steel and shipping businesses have been added. This is a new portfolio as before him, the legal affairs of these businesses were managed by different legal counsels.

Wadehra is also part of the Vedanta group’s legal council which oversees the legal department’s responsibilities across the group and drives strategic agenda for legal risk management of the group. This council is now at the top of the group's legal functions since the exit of Vedanta's former general counsel Mukesh Bhavnani.

The other four members who are part of this council are Cairn GC Nitin Banerjee, aluminium vertical GC Vikash Jain, corporate group GC Pooja Yadava and HZL Head Legal Vineet Bose.

A CLC Delhi 2001 alumnus, Wadehra has also headed the legal arms of Genpact, Deutsche Bank, Fedex and International Paper before joining Vedanta.
