Gotcha!

Yea! I know why you opened this post. You are insecure. You wanted to know, “Who does this napster think he is? My college is way better than GNLU.”

Well, I have to tell you. I wrote this post just to prove that we are all acceptance seekers. If someone says that your college is the best then you will like him even though you know that what he is saying is all hogwash.

I am just trying to show what a small title can do.

Why do we keep worrying about what other people think of our college?

How does it even matter?

If you like your college, then it’s good enough. Let other’s speak what they want.

I am tired of reading and hearing arguments about which college is better, which college has what rank, which college is the ‘best’. If the comparison of different national law schools was not enough, we had the entry of debates, no wait, they were not debates, they were arguments, about whether three year colleges are better or five year colleges. Five year colleges have divisions of NLUs and Non-NLUs. How nice!

So, all we do is fight online. Whatever happened to ‘healthy arguments’.

Some people like to boast that their college is Number 1 or 2 or 4. I have just one thing that I need to tell you, I don’t care what rank your college is, or even mine. All I care is that my college gives me the best it can and keeps on improving. That I can give my college my best and come out of it as a better person.

This might seem like a very stupid issue to be a blog post but it’s not. It is one issue that has been excessively discussed on all the websites and public forums. I personally think that people who argue on it are just plain jobless. Will your college’s performance go up if you won an argument about it online?

Just like all mothers think, their child is the best. All students think their college is the best. They cannot take criticism. No one can. They don’t just deny things. They fight over it like dogs.

People have stopped trusting their instincts. Now they rely only on ranking to know how they feel about their college. They don’t think for themselves. If you let someone else judge you then you will always face grief.

There are many kinds of people who are part of such ‘debates’. One, who state reasons why they think their college is the best. Another so state the negative aspects of other colleges to make their college look better. Another, who think that such debates are futile but in the end, they end up joining the debate. I have seen people who first say that they are not affected by such ‘rankings’ and then later on give us a list of their own. Bravo!

But, there is one kind, which sits on a chair and laments the fact that people around law schools are becoming so insecure.

I am one of them.

Stop it. Please.

Disclaimer:

This post is written out of frustration that has crept in after years of reading long futile debates on who is the best. The names in the title are chosen randomly. No offence to India Today and Outlook. I was one of the people who got carried away and commented. I was stupid. Now I have learnt. They are just giving the public what it wants. Entertainment.

Check out the ranking. It has 212 comments. I am pretty sure the views would be higher than any other quality blog on this website.

Whatever said and done, it's sad how GNLU is barely given any recognition. Sadder yet is that people don't know where Gandhinagar is and believe that Ahmedabad is the capital of Gujarat. O_o
I'm a first year student here, two weeks into college, and you know what? This place isn't bad at all. It's perfectly manageable. Okay I have to admit, when I first found out I got in here I was pretty happy. But after having read threads and threads of law school v/s law school debates I began feeling insecure because GNLU never figured in any of them (except for the juvenile GNLU v/s HNLU ones). I began wondering if the college was so absolutely obscure that people didn't even consider taking it into account.

"Why do we keep worrying about what other people think of our college?"
I guess it's just human nature. Can't really do much about it.
Or so I thought.

"If you like your college, then it’s good enough. Let others speak what they want."
And that's pretty much what I live by now. So it's all good. :)

Great read this turned out to be. Coincided with exactly what was on my mind which made it better.

Cheers. :)

Dear All,

I am a passout of the captioned college (GNLU) and the only thing I would like to state is that your destiny is mostly in your hands (except if there is something like recession, health problems, etc.) and if you do not work hard to get it, no NLU rubber stamp is going to help you. All the NLUs offer almost similar exposures and give an opportunity to spread wings through moot courts (helps develop research and oratory skills), publications, internships, etc. So, it is entirely upon you as to how you would like to use the opportunities. So, just work hard in law school (but don't get exhausted and keep taking chill pills in between), have good relations with fellow students and faculty and do not ignore your CGPA (as the same affects your recruitment prospects).

With Best Regards...........

Hey Buudy, You have done a great job here. Atleast there is some one out there who is not in the ( "Zindgi ka race"- Courtesy 3 idiots)I really appreciate your effort stop this nonsense called ranking system. Can you think back? It was not there amongst law colleges about a decade ago. No one even bothered which college they wanted to graduate from except that they wanted a quality education. With the advent of the corporate legal sector and MNC's paying mouthwatering salaries, even the question of "which college you graduated from?" became a pert of interviewing and campus recruitment culture has worsened that race. We senior lawyers never felt the need to recognize ourselves with the identity of our colleges or it's ranking. Our competition is and was only to be the best in the profession. If you are from one of these prestigeous colleges and do not perform personally as a well educated and trained attorney, what the hell is the college tag for? Grow up kids. Stop fighting over personated identities and grow deep within as a responsible and competent lawyer. I bet, today I wouldnt be working for one of the famous US law firms in a good position if I were to bother to study in NLSIU or any other "top ranking" law schools. All that matters is what's inside and how valuable it is than how costly or appealing the gift wrapper is...you'll leave it behind anyways!!! And Khudos to you napster.

I love the blog.I am a student at GNLU myself, but that said and done, don't placements affect the rankings too?And by far, the best placements come from the tier I colleges.

Placements affect the college reputation among the masses. I am against all types of rankings. I believe rankings create an unhealthy competition. Let all colleges be equal in the eye of the beginner. If a college is good, the news will spread even though there are no rankings. :)
The fact that you get good placements only if you are in a tier one law school is not correct. I guess a lot of stats can prove that.

Well there would nothing be wrong with the post if you would have criticized the ranking system rather than complaining of other law schools.
I am in NALSAR and I don't know about GNLU but here we do get lots of opportunities to grow.

Do consider that Law Students are the only members of the legal fraternity with the time and energy to engage in these prolonged battles of words. :)

Excellently put. I did feel I was doing an idiotic thing by following magazine rankings and not thinking for myself, but what you wrote really gave me a reason to be open-minded and not let others judge for me. I don't mean to rubbish those rankings or anything, I'll probably treat them as just opinions, and opinions can be taken or thrown away with one's personal discretion.

Thank you so much. The most thought-provoking post I've read. :)
