Load of crap. Many IIT grads end up pursuing Masters at tier-2 and 3 public state universities in the US so the idea that they’re better than an MIT grad is ludicrous. Sure, exceptions may always exist but the academic rigour and research at any US university is incomparable to India. The real reason why these folks are employed is because (1) Indians are desperate to move abroad to the West and will bear any indignity to do so and (2) they offer cheaper labour to employers and tech is what generates value for an economy in today’s times. Lawyers leverage that value but they don’t actually create it and so they’re easier to replace across jurisdictions.

This isn't about maligning a whole batch but the collective mentality of the whole college which does not hold these seniors accountable for their actions rather tries to justify them by saying things like You would not have been able to withstand the level of ragging we had to face , this is so that we get to know you better there are better ways for interaction.

A former SJA Prez had sent extensive documentation concerning the distance education scam to the then Chancellor/CJI, which subsequently led to critical discussions in the EC. The then Acting VC, Justice Talukdar and his allies had slowed down the inquiries directed by the EC.

Apparently the evidence collected/presented by the former SJA Prez was so strong that despite the best efforts of NKC and his allies, the EC had to unanimously agree the distance education courses were illegally conducted by NUJS and the inquiry needs to be done properly.

What really is the SJA doing? There was a time when dogged pursuit by SJA opened a can of worms involving financial chicanery of UGC funds running into crores and got the Cal HC to direct an inquiry by Justice (Retd) PN Sinha. Soon thereafter an unrelenting SJA despite change in leadership exposed other scams including distance education courses perpetrated by PIB and his Boys.

PIB got booted. Justice Talukdar and NKC killed off all the inquiries. Maybe the problem isn't the SJA but all of us who make up the GB. If the (s)elected few in the SJA prefer servility what about the silent majority or vocal minority?

So I wrote clat this year and got an abysmal rank due to some D-DAY circumstances and the silly mistakes which I have committed Ik I could do A LOT better but nvm.. I think you're being a bit silly. Please go and tell your partner and seniors. What if they tell you - "We will try our best to not disturb this as long as you hold your end of the bargain and are sincere during work hours and product is good.!". It may be a win-win. There would obviously be bad days - but if it's one off - I'm guessing you may be able to manage.

my dear friend, moots are perhaps a big thing in the common law world. nobody gives a shit about moots in the civil law jurisdictions. NLUS are overrated (i mean overrated in India. the rest of the world has hardly heard about them) skilling schools for UG education. They dont do any serious research , which is what universities are measured on in the rest of the world. Their contribution to academic thinking and work is more or less zilch. Compared to the IITs/IIMs or the NITs the NLUs are a complete joke. This might be hard for the 18 something kids at NLUs to swallow because competing and winning with about 50k people makes them think that they are really smart.

Hey firstly I hope you are doing well, law firms are the worst place to join with someone having critical health conditions speaking from personal experience I would immediately look for in house roles which give wlb. There is nothing more important than health. Law firms suck the soul out of the fittest people I know. Please take up a job which will allow you to take care of your health and avoid late nighters.

Listen to your cardiologist. If you have your health and and are alive, you can enjoy your career. Please do a job that suits your condition. You either need to set boundaries where you work, tell them about your condition and make your health a non-negotiable aspect of your life, or leave and take up a role which isn't as demanding and take bloody good care of your health. You have a long, long way to go in life.

Don't throw it all away toiling away in anonymity and burning mid night oil in a thankless tier 1 firm where your partners will not blink an eyelid before thinking of your replacements. It's NOT worth it.

STOP DOING LLM AND PHD IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE A PROFESSOR.

Instead of wasting years in LLM and PhD opt for work experience. That will get you a job quicker than extra degrees !!!!

You might want to take the following into consideration -

1. Experiences at well known shops - A M&A/ B&F internship at a T1 will be better placed than one at a T3 firm because.

2. Experiences in your interest area - If you want to strategically align your CV, highlight those parts. But make sure to have atleast one T1 internship in that area.

3. Shared practice areas - Some practices like ECM and B&F can have common skill sets, or shared due diligence work with M&A, for instance. So clubbing the two while highlighting the same shouldn't be an issue.

4. Diversity - An internship experience isn't per se an "experience", as per partners, who consider PQE only to be of any value. So a diverse internship folio helps in explaining a skill/ interest area/ all round development during an interview. Nobody ever will ask you why you chose to pursue several practices in your pre-QE, while the same isn't true of PQE which should be rather focussed because it adds up.

I wish I could help you. Whatever you are feeling is absolutely normal and a lot of people are on the same boat. Please do not give up and keep interning even after you graduate if there’s a slight chance of conversion. In case you don’t make it to a t1 or t2, find a decent job and you can always make a switch to a better firm with experience. Good luck!

BO 2021 - non-NLU. Decided to not sit for zero day in February of 2020 because I wanted to work in a niche. I had internships lined up in June and July of 2021 at some of the best practices in this niche. Sucked to see my peers get placed on zero-day, but I was still fairly confident because I knew I had these internships lined up. We all know what happened in March of 2020. I lost both internships because the firms were unwilling to have online interns. Ended up not interning in 2020 at all.

Jump to 2021, I found myself without any internships for the last 8 months before graduation, in the middle of a very aggressive COVID wave. Put in a lot of effort into networking, focussing on bumping up my grades to whatever extent possible, and cold emailing anyone and everyone whose email IDs I could get. I had no prospects even on the day of my online convocation ceremony. All I could see were LinkedIn updates from every one I knew from law school. This was perhaps the lowest phase of my life yet, and while my parents were extremely supportive, I could see the disappointment in their eyes.

4 weeks after my graduation, I received an internship offer from a Tier-1 firm. A professor at my law school was friends with a salaried partner at this firm (law school friends) and put in a good word for me after I ranked 1st in his elective course. I was offered a regular internship, and after days of begging to be assessed for a full-time role, I was finally extended an offer in early September of 2021. Joined in October 2021 and I've been here ever since.

I know how it feels to be in this position. It sucks. Its a weird culmination of 'what ifs' from your 5 years at law school. I won't tell you to "not panic"; but please re-direct that sense of panic in a direction where you might be able to secure an opportunity for yourself. Hell, I would even recommend that you direct this sense of panic into networking more, both inside and outside your law school. Swallow your pride and cold email partners that you'd like to (and maybe even not like to) work for. Unfortunately with law firms, placements are more a factor of 'luck' than they are of 'skill'. You just want to have a profile that ensures that when you do get lucky and land an interview, you're able to convert it into a full-time opportunity. So put your head down.

Any place worth their salt shall not expect you to pay for publication so please do not fall into the trap of paying. You'll only be wasting money for a publication which won't even hold much value in your CV

Go for nlu run blogs and check for call for papers on bar and bench or live law again for research papers. Additionally, Indian corp law and Indian review of corporate and commercial laws(irccl) are two good places for corporate law blogs. NLS business review is extremely reputed but very selective too.

It is very likely that on Effulgent and NFCG issues NKC/EC will only hector and desist from doing anything decisive because the inconvenient questions (below) remain unanswered by NKC with tacit approval from the powers that be in the EC -

1. What was SAK the then Registrar (Acting) doing? Why isn't he being inquired for dereliction/negligence? What deliberate omissions were pursued by AM, the director of SDME? It was a cabal of PIB acolytes, which the mislead both the AC and EC and distance educations students

2. What is the actual status of the EC-mandated inquiries against PIB? How can he and his acolytes e let off the hook just like that, esp the "PIB Boys" in the faculty?

3. What has been the real progress achieved by the recently designated senior advocate in recovering so-called unauthorised payments by the VC? More important;y why no review is being conducted concerning the instructions given by NKC to lawyers who represented university against iPleaders? Were the defeats in the HC and SC scripted when NKC had better relations with a certain teach?

4. What is the actual status of the EC-mandated inquiry into the illegality of distance education courses and affixing responsibility? Why isn't NKC making these inquiries available to the SJA/GB? What explains the silence?

Apart from this, what explains inaction of NKC on the Cal HC initiated Justice (Retd) PN Sinha Inquiry. Incidentally, it was directed by DD when he was in the Cal HC. Maybe he has grown wiser in the company of CC

CNLU is one of the worst in this regard. Toxic Seniors who know they won't actually be able to do anything productive in their life so hunt juniors for validation. They find reasons to justify ragging such as personality development, Mutual respect,etc but the truth is that they know they will never be respected by anyone hence forced respect while they do nothing just smoke pot,get detained,suspended and Get caught cheating in exams.

I humbly request all of you not to lump all seniors at GNLU as bullies because of the behaviour of a few. The vast majority of seniors are liberals and treat everyone with kindness, irrespective of caste, race, religion, age, skin colour, gender or sexual orientation. GNLU seniors are the coolest and best among all the NLUs, I promise you.

I have joined in as an A0 this year. I had a heart procedure done last year because of some underlying condition. I have maintained good routines and I try to ensure I don't end up stressing myself until the last moment and mess up my sleep routine or anything which will sue something adverse. I personally like my team, they are good people and also the work in general. Yet the senior associate, I am working with has an awful schedule, ends up assigning something at 10.30pm which they need by next morning or assist on a draft well into the midnight. I can't really tell my partner or the senior about my health condition as they might look at me adversely. I am wondering how to go about it. I really want that 6-7 hours of sleep consistently at the same time. I know it feels like it is not a big ask, but I am not feeling well and my cardiologist has warned me to change my schedule as soon as possible. Also a lot of few may suggest leave, but I have been told it is a very bad idea to leave before the end of one year from anywhere.

Choose Corporate Law. Tier 1 firm salaries for IP team will not match corporate teams or for that matter litigation team salaries. Plus, promotions in tier 1s for IP teams are just horrible. Delayed promotions, no clear path to partnerships, no exposure to networking events etc.

Hey, I am an A0 working in a capital markets team. I wanted to ask fellow capital markets lawyer about the exposure which an A0 gets at tier 1 and 2 firms. Currently, I am handling client meeting myself, drafting almost all chapters of DRHP and doing everything in the whole DRHP process.

A2 in a tier 2 disputes law firm in Mumbai. Got an interview at kco Mumbai from one of the partners who’s gradually started to be noticed but I was told there’s no vacancy and they only interviewed me exceptionally. The interview itself was in the first week of December. Haven’t heard back from anyone yet, what to expect? guys i need genuine advice, after clat and ailet 2025 im in a dilemma whether to choose nalsar or nlud , considering that im equally inclined towards both upsc and corporate law in the future and also both of these universities are geographically equidistant for me as i live in maharashra. the major red flag of nlud for me is obv "DELHI" as a city and for nalsar its the distance from hyderabad. help me
