Please donβt waste your money on these βΉ30-50 lakh programs just because you can (even with a loan). That would be a poor decision! Only consider institutions like SLS or JGLS if:
a) They offer you a substantial scholarship, and
b) Youβve managed to secure a top-seven NLU test score.
Know thisβthese institutions are in the business of selling education. There is little regulatory or independent oversight on the criteria they use to select candidates. Do not pursue law simply because you managed to get into such colleges; that alone is not reason enough.
India already has more lawyers than it needs. Joblessness is at an all-time high, and competition is fiercer than ever.
Itβs high time the government and BCI shut down mediocre and underperforming law schools instead of opening new ones.

I am an A0 at a law firm in the GC team. I want to get better at understanding things and I am studying/reading up on my own. But if there's certain things that I don't understand that come with practical experience or right now, as an A0 don't know when it's appropriate to move to a better team, etc., I'd like to speak to someone about it. I do ask my seniors at work if I don't understand things or even a couple of seniors from my college but I thought perhaps I should also ask here as well if anyone's (A2/A3/SA (although SAs will be quite busy and may not have time)) interested + can spare some time to help me understand the practicalities of GC/this career, I'd appreciate it a lot. For instance, I didn't know one had to look up similarly placed companies to assess the regulatory aspect for a requisition list. Things like that.
I won't ask you to teach me things - just help me clarify my understanding after I've read things on my own. I won't take a ton of your time and I will ensure to work on this by myself as much as I can. Thank you.

I attempted judicial service exams after graduation without working in any law firm alongside. I missed judiciary very marginally. So now I neither have judiciary in my hand nor law firm work experience because of which no law firm even tier 2 one is willing to recruit me as an associate. What is the way ahead for me? any suggestions? How do I get into any law firm? or should I just give a 2nd attempt of judiciary exams this year? I graduated in 2022 and been sitting at home preparing since 3 years and I am already so hopeless

On this page however I keep reading that certain teams / lawyers are toxic - but what action or behaviour amounts to being toxic? It would be good if young lawyers / students provide their understanding of toxic behaviour so that it can be understood (by me and other seniorish associates) how reasonable / excessive the complaints are.
I am also curious to understand from interns - what practice do you notice in a month long internship that helps you form such solid views about a firm, practice, lawyer?
In the same breath, when market leaders like Anand and Anand, Saikrishna, Fidus, Singh and Singh, etc. don't revise fresher salaries for several years, the baseline gets set at rock bottom. Smaller firms pay even lower sums, amounts which are unfit to be labelled as a 'salary' -> it is more akin to a 'stipend'.
The situation is grim and unlikely to get better anytime soon. The Tier 1 firms that have IP teams pay marginally better (save for Trilegal and AZB who in my limited knowledge pay at par with their corp. associates). I would strongly recommend that you specialize in laws that pay better (unless, of course, you are not concerned with pay).
I am a BBA LLB graduate from Symbiosis Hyderabad and I graduated in 2023 July and since then I had been preparing for judicial services exams and to give it my whole-hearted and undivided focus and attention I didn't join any law firm job alongside. I attempted judiciary exams of 3 states only once and missed all of them very marginally. Now I neither have work experience so that I can join a law firm now nor have judiciary in my hand. So now I am waiting to give a 2nd attempt of the judiciary exam but I am now also thinking of preparing for regulatory body exams. But I am scared what if I don't clear these? What's the way ahead for me? Any suggestions please? How do I get into a law firm now so that I am working besides preparing for regulatory body exams?
I now think judiciary was a bad decision. I have been sitting at home for the past 2 years and I now feel like a loser with 0 work experience as none of the tier 2 law firms are willing to recruit me as an associate because of lack of work experience while my batchmates are getting promoted from associate to senior associate. What do I do now I am so clueless. Please suggest me something good....
Now there are many ways to respond to your argument. Suffice it to say, the underlying assumptions of your query are simplistic and fundamentally incorrect. Education and intelligence do not exist in vacuum but are in constant interaction with the social norms of a society. What it means in practice is that intelligence and education, on their own, cannot overcome the problems of corruption as sanctioned in public life. As it happens, what you suggest is already in practice. Observe the educational qualifications of those in All India Services. They are all well educated and are more than intelligent enough to not only clear a competitive examination but also engage in policy-making. Yet here we are. For all their brilliance, they are no more immune to the social norms of the day than the rest of us. Claims of their efficiency are debatable and evidence of their integrity non-existent.
Your division of the society between the βilliterateβ/βbackwardβ and the βbest educatedβ also fails to take into account that no society can exist for long, much less be governed well, when divided so explicitly into haves and have-nots.
Indiaβs problems are largely structural. Until its political economy becomes competitive and until a majority of its citizens become capable of competing in that economy and thereby making it self-sustaining, there will be no incentive to change the existing norms of patronage and naked tribalism and hence no difference in governance will be made, regardless of who leads it, whether an economist with a Ph.D. or a monk from a temple.
In my opinion it is one of the most welcoming and enjoyable offices out there. You will get to learn so much and interact with these brilliant people with unmatched legal acumen. Interactions with lordship themselves are a wonderful experience. This is an opportunity that I believe one should definitely not miss.
All the best!!
1. You'll have to check availability for the month you're considering, as judicial offices get a tonnes of applications. So make sure to apply a month or two prior. If you're applying too late, then are you even serious about your internships?
2. You'll have 3 other interns with you (contingent on you being selected).
3. The work given there is not a piece of cake, you'll have to do onerous tasks of research. Be ready to do elongated research which can be stretched over for whole month just on one specific proposition or a particular section. Though you'll be given ample time to do your research, but it's expected from you to ask for more work so that the law clerks aren't overburdened.
5. You'll be mainly interacting with the law clerks there who'll give you the research propositions. If you happen to apply and get selected in the near future, then you're definitely lucky cause they're all sweet natured and will always be there to make you learn new things. More than that, the law clerks have tremendous clarity of the work they're doing, and an ocean of knowledge, so don't try fooling them :)
6. One of the best part about Sir's office is that he interacts with the interns often, unlike any other Supreme Court Judge. He'll have discussions with you, and ask you about the experience in the Court on particular days, because he always encourages the youth to learn more.
7. The internship is one month commitment, and you'll have to be present in the Office almost everyday. The flexibility to attend college presentation and vivas depends upon the urgency of work and the number of days you'll need off. So do not expect a chill environment where you can just ask for so many days off, cause again, you're going to a Supreme Court Judge's Office, so act like in.
8. If you get through the application process and make it to the interview round, then just be honest.
9.
But cam competition doesn't even come close to SAM, AZB & JSA. These firms also wouldn't mind if you're A1 coming from tax background but you need to perform extraordinary in your interview for them to give you A1 position in competition team. If you're looking for A0 position, you've nothing to worry.
Very shocking because this is a very common practice is the USβ¦ many law firm partners do it β¦.has also been becoming popular in India.

In this regard, AZB and KCO have tier 2 EIR teams and the entire market knows it.
- Colonial architecture > Ugly concrete blocks
- English as national language > Hindi
- Downton Abbey > Akshay Kumar movies
Now, hit them with facts. Tell them exactly whatβs at stake. A Tier 1 law school means top jobs at firms like CAM, SAM, AZB, where people start with salaries of 18-25 LPA. If you go to some random local college, youβll be lucky to even make 3-5 LPA. Thatβs the difference. Itβs not just about moneyβitβs about opportunities. If you ever want to study abroad, do an LLM at Harvard or Oxford, or even crack judiciary exams, your college matters. Judges, top litigators, law firm partnersβalmost all of them come from NLUs. If they make you stay back, theyβre shutting the door on all of that.
Now, letβs talk about the real issue. Your parents arenβt worried about your education, theyβre worried about what people will say. Relatives have fed them nonsense about girls going out and getting spoiled. You need to shut that down immediately. Tell them NLUs have gated campuses, strict hostel rules, curfews. This isnβt some party scene. Youβll be surrounded by Indiaβs best law students, not random people with no ambition. Also, bring up examples of girls from your city or community who went to NLUs and are now successful. Show them proof that their fears are baseless.
If they still donβt get it, hit them where it hurts. βYou were so proud when I got this rank. You know how hard I worked. And now, because of some relatives, youβre throwing it all away?β Remind them that youβre their daughter, not some random girl from a story. If they truly trust you, they should trust your decisions too.
If all else fails, get someone they respect to talk to themβa teacher, a lawyer, a family friend. Sometimes, parents listen more when the advice comes from an βexperiencedβ person instead of their own kid.
And if they still refuse? Make it clear this isnβt over. Tell them youβll take a gap year and try again next year rather than settle for a bad college. Tell them if they force you into this, youβll never forget that they were the ones who ruined your career. They need to understand that this isnβt some small decision. This is your future. If they truly want the best for you, they need to stop listening to outsiders and start listening to you.

With a batch of 300 UG students, 200 PG and then another chunk of 3 years LLB Grads. What does this foreign degree holder VC want to make NLS? A factory of intellectually unemployed students? Why don't you tell us about placements at NLS post 2024 and tell us more about each courses. Just few thinking here and there and what is to take pride is CV of VC. He has to be a good admin and make students like you understand that degree has very less to do with competence of either being a Good Prof, Litigation Lawyer, Corp Lawyer or be it any other field.
Mods, unpublish and tag the above comment as 'trollish' immediately. How is it that harmless jokes get tagged while genuinely exhibitionist (and bad) behaviour that could have adverse impact(s) on other people is given a free pass?

My father and my uncle jointly own a 1200sq plot in Bangalore
. They have built two seperate floors in which each of our families live. We pay seprate house tax. The only obstacle I currently face is the ownership bullshit. The ownership deed has listed both their names but there is no explicit statment indicating the percentage of ownership which each of them hold. Would I still qualify for the Karnataka ews category?
I know you would not really be all that intersted in helping some dumabss kid asking for legal advice but I would really appreciate it if you help me π this is my last resort as my father is very reluctant to consult an actual lawyer. I have tried various avenues heck I even went to a local litigation firm about this and they booted me out because I was not able to pay an upfront retainer fee of 5k.
I am from Karnataka. I am facing a dilema,My uncle and my father jointly own a 1200sq plot of land and have built two separate floors. We both pay seprate house tax. In the ownership deed both their names have been listed but an explicit statment of ownership is not specified. Everything else checks out except this whole ownership bs. So would still be eligible for EWS? I am posting this here because it will take a lot of convincing for my father to consult a lawyer so please help me out.
Gudmundur, Sreejith, Rashmi raman, Rohini Sen, Prabhash ranjan, etc
Either he/she has a strong contact there, or is super overconfident. SC judicial internships are some of the bought sought after internships for anyone pursuing litigation/applying for LLM.
have people lost their minds? this is what we're bothering with so much? its a joke. If you think its funny, laugh. I did. If you think its not funny, move on like an adult.
Those crying about how this is obscenity and all- do you have nothing nothing nothing better to do? If you were worried about morals and values I know you have a mountain of child porn to report and traffickers to catch. A comedian making a joke that is pretty much middle of the road shouldnt be on your radar.
Reporters spending time writing about this should be ashamed. Do we not have anything else to report on or talk about in the country?
Regarding retaking clat, I'm a dropper already so would it be advisable to write the paper again (along w college) given the uncertainty of the last 2 years?
If pushed, mention that taking on additional corporate work may impact your ability to perform well in your primary practice area. Casually inform your disputes seniors that youβre being assigned corporate tasks and ask if theyβd prefer you to stay focused on disputesβthey may step in. Since disputes lawyers arrive later, use early hours for self-initiated legal research or drafting to appear engaged. If declining directly doesnβt work, say youβll check if you can manage both but canβt promise a deadline, forcing corporate associates to reconsider. Additionally, leverage informal discussions with other disputes interns or associates for strategies on deflecting corporate work. If assignments persist despite your objections, subtly bring it up with a disputes senior, as they might intervene to keep you within your intended practice area.
GRB???
Above preferential order is based on the following criteria: (i) institute autonomy (including uniform academic calendar, time-bound academic sessions, etc.), (ii) academic rigour (including student-to-faculty ratio, intra-batch competition where members of a batch are more competitive when they secure admission in the institute of their first-preference, etc.), (iii) professional opportunities (including internships, scholarships, references, alumni relations, etc.)
When in doubt, go for that institute which you think (on balance of aforementioned criteria) is capable of providing a strong foundation for your career and one which you are least likely to regret joining. The above ranking, I think, satisfies that principle. Choice is yours. All the best.
Atleast the juniors are working during the working hours. These seniors are not working even then.
As for AI - no one in India understands it (beyond IPR in AI), apart from maybe IITs. There is no Indian law on it yet. So frankly its a premature field in law. What you should consider is faculty teaching 'Regulatory Affairs'.
I've done majorly internships in disputes and capital market.
Also - what's the best way prepare to eventually do a TMT internship?
