i attempted CLAT 2025 n got a rank of 3xx which is enough for me to get into tier 1 or 2 at least im hoping.

BUT, the problem is that my, parents who were thrilled about my results, suddenly are against the idea of me pursuing my education elsewhere.

(courtesy of my extended family filling their brains with nonsense, talking about how girls who go out of their homes to study, often become alcoholics and spend their times “messing around with guys”)

Even though my family knows that that’s something i wouldn’t ever do, it’s poisoned their minds.

My mother is planning to get me enrolled in a law college that nobody’s even heard of outside the city.

i’ve tried to reason with them, tell them how i’ll be making the most out of the opportunity. They just won’t listen. Im tired n i’ve accepted my fate.

i’ve seen other conversations on here regarding non nlus n i have a few questions.

1. Do folks from there ever make it big?

2. What’s to be done to ensure a decent career in law?

3. how do you build networks?

4. What will make your CV look decent?

5. Anything else that i need to know?

I would say fight with them again. NLU is worth it. Talk to your mentors and get them to have a conversation with your parents

But if u really have no option and u stick to the private college, it’ll definitely be hard but what I will ask u to do is keep your grades up. Be on top of your batch, intern in all the right places, build connections.

Did u go to a coaching centre? If any of your friends made it in, then keep in touch with them. Ask seniors for guidance..

Show them the salary ladder of an average corpo lawyer and then show them the peanuts the average litigation lawyer from no name district colleges (which almost all of them end up as) earn. Use logic, plead, beg, cry and if none of this works give them silent treatment and last resort threaten them with self-harm (just empty threats, nothing more). I know last option is just straight up vile but as someone with similar rank in CLAT 2025 that is what I would end up pulling had my parents refused to send me.

Do not and I say DO NOT leave a tier 1 NLU for some fuckass local “khatam” college. You will fuckall chances of making it into big law. Even if your intentions are something else, be it litigation, judiciary, or JAG, do not miss out on the NLU experience.

I’m someone who didnt take clat seriously and somehow got into a tier 2 nlu (sheer luck). I see how diff my life is in terms of opportunities, mentorship, general college culture and friendships. I would do it all over again if i had the chance to because it is absolutely worth it. Fight. Convince. Have them talk to actual lawyers (reach out on linkedin etc) have them talk to me ffs

Listen to your parents. You'll win in the long run, even though it might seem like a loss now. An NLU tag is highly overhyped. This is just an NLU we are talking of - a state university. NLUs are not worth fighting for and creating a rift with your parents. Do extremely well wherever they want you to take admission. I am sure the "law college that nobody's heard of" is affiliated with some university. So become the university topper. After that get into a super good PG program.

I was in your place ten years ago. Fight like hell. With a 300 something rank you might get nujs. It’s a life changing thing to go to a university like that. Tell them they’re making you throw away a good job and a stable career, and a shot at making something of yourself in five years for uncertainty and poor job prospects. Indian parents understand money. This is not at all the time to give up. You’ll be kicking yourself if you do. Think about if you can get an education loan or ABS and do it on your own if they won’t support you.

I went to law school. Not everyone who goes there ends up an alcoholic or boy crazy. Most people actually don’t. Most of my friends graduated not having drank, smoked, and were virgins. Your parents are wrong about not letting you study.

This is why I completely despise the weird men’s rights supporters in India - women go through this BS on a regular basis. Truth is that it’s the men who drink crazily and go astray but no we blame the women. Just choose the college of your liking and move out. Apply to the college for a scholarship.

What NLU will you get at your rank? Can you share that with us? Are you from the pure merit category and not eligible for any type of reservation? If you will get a top 7 NLU then why don’t you get some established people or CLAT coaches to convince your parents? However, if you get one of the mediocre NLUs it will be harder to convince them.

fight them as much as you can. 3xx is a wonderful rank and certainly a game changer.

whichever nlu you are getting (and will likely be upgraded later) - show them that its a safe and academic place. show them the wonderful achievements of the alumni. and of course show them your own sincerity. i cannot stress this enough - if you go from here to nlu to high-paying job, you can literally move social classes and countries. opportunities are limitless. if your parents were okay with it before, they are likely to change their mind. please, don't let this opportunity go. reassure them that you will not become like that. update us!! good luck

To repeat after what other good folks have already said, DO NOT GIVE UP, dear fellow. Persuade and fight like hell. You must! This is not just about your prospective career. It is also about other challenges and opportunities that a bright individual like you will face in your life. If you let others dictate the path of your life today then will not just stop here and will keep harassing you to do their bidding till the end of time. Do everything you can and ensure that you do not become that person who, later in life, ends up regretting what they could have been if only they had fought harder and longer.

Could you tell us where you live? At the very least, you should aim to study in the capital city of your State as it will lilely give you access to better law offices for your internships and more people to build your network. A non NLU will not matter as much if you can maintain good grades and pursue quality internships.

Building networks involves meeting new people, finding common interests, and recognizing each other's value. You can do that in a library, a conference, a Moot Court, in a restaurant, on the metro, in a plane, on social media.. there are as many avenues of networking as there are people and activities around you.

Tell them that just because the relatives child is unemployed chapri doesn't mean everyone else is like that, you'll get better opportunities in NLUs compared to random law colleges, also well...you have to reassure them that what they are feeling is fine...they are just being protective....but being overprotective and paranoid will end up in them regretting their decision more than you later on...#fucktherelatives

First, sit your parents down and talk to them properly. No shouting, no arguing—just make them listen. Start by telling them straight up, “I know you’re worried about me leaving, but I need you to hear me out before you decide anything.” Make sure they agree to actually listen.

Now, hit them with facts. Tell them exactly what’s at stake. A Tier 1 law school means top jobs at firms like CAM, SAM, AZB, where people start with salaries of 18-25 LPA. If you go to some random local college, you’ll be lucky to even make 3-5 LPA. That’s the difference. It’s not just about money—it’s about opportunities. If you ever want to study abroad, do an LLM at Harvard or Oxford, or even crack judiciary exams, your college matters. Judges, top litigators, law firm partners—almost all of them come from NLUs. If they make you stay back, they’re shutting the door on all of that.

Now, let’s talk about the real issue. Your parents aren’t worried about your education, they’re worried about what people will say. Relatives have fed them nonsense about girls going out and getting spoiled. You need to shut that down immediately. Tell them NLUs have gated campuses, strict hostel rules, curfews. This isn’t some party scene. You’ll be surrounded by India’s best law students, not random people with no ambition. Also, bring up examples of girls from your city or community who went to NLUs and are now successful. Show them proof that their fears are baseless.

If they still don’t get it, hit them where it hurts. “You were so proud when I got this rank. You know how hard I worked. And now, because of some relatives, you’re throwing it all away?” Remind them that you’re their daughter, not some random girl from a story. If they truly trust you, they should trust your decisions too.

If all else fails, get someone they respect to talk to them—a teacher, a lawyer, a family friend. Sometimes, parents listen more when the advice comes from an “experienced” person instead of their own kid.

And if they still refuse? Make it clear this isn’t over. Tell them you’ll take a gap year and try again next year rather than settle for a bad college. Tell them if they force you into this, you’ll never forget that they were the ones who ruined your career. They need to understand that this isn’t some small decision. This is your future. If they truly want the best for you, they need to stop listening to outsiders and start listening to you.

Please do anything to assuage their fears even if it means that you need to execute some sort of a legal contract. Set out the terms & conditions to their satisfaction but please GO! This is your chance at life. Educational Institutions matter, Alumni Matters, networking matters, PLEASE just go.
