Family law, criminal law are far more lucrative fields. I understand you want to join some firm but since you are willing to start from bottom, I suggest you take these cases. They're easier to get. Generation of business isn't an easy task. Appear pro bono for petty criminals first. Once your name gets in discussion in jail, you will make money

The VC's educational qualifications don't define the university, his administrative capability does. In that way, Sudhir hasn't really separated himself. As for research ethos, there is yet to be any evidence of that. No great research has been forthcoming from NLSIU in the last six years during Sudhir's tenure. However, I don't think that means NLSIU is doing any worse than the other law schools, who haven't really shown any such research either.

Buddy, you will never be in the same position as a NLUD grad after graduating from RML. There’s a certain steely inner confidence that develops by being in an actual tier-1 NLU which even a topper of RML can’t get. And it’ll affect everything from how you work to how people treat you at your workplace. Don’t underestimate the importance of a tag in a country where resources are scarce.

NLS hasn’t done anything notable in the past 5 years of Messiah apart from increasing the batch size and introducing new programs to make more money. They don’t even win moots anymore. Honestly, NLUD had far more research publications during the RS era with the same NLS faculty like Mrinal, Aparna and Arup than NLS has done in the past 6 years or so.

I cannot reveal the firm but therr haven't been down times, especially for Capital Markets folks, since a long time and yes I do feel that the team is not well managed and very understaffed. If your firm is doing good in terms of work hours, can you tell which firm you're from? I presume there shouldn't be an issue since you're saying something positive. The partner probably used his/her quota of personal references to get you in, as otherwise all (s)he could do was refer you to HR. I know it's hard to justify, but you should take to heart that (s)he put weight behind you despite not seeing client / commercial benefit from it.

Anyone who desires to live long term in any state should know at least the basics of that language. If you look at the European Union, every member state (at least in the Schengen Zone - mentioning this since Ireland does not fall under the Schengen Zone), mandates knowledge of their language upto a certain level as per the CEFR (Atleast B1 in most EU countries).

That said, violence can never be condoned. Slapping someone or beating someone if they don't speak your language is absolutely unacceptable. Maharashtra could do with learning from Tamil Nadu - be completely proud of your own language, have a powerful and good local film industry (like Kollywood), and more importantly, Maharashtrians living in Mumbai specifically should be proud to speak in Marathi, be proud of their culture, and stop blindly running behind Bollywood. Most of the Mumbai based Maharashtrians speak that disgusting Hinglish which they think is cool. This problem is not to be seen in the rest of Maharashtra, where people are proud to speak Marathi.

Is that really the case? Many faculty members have observed how readily NKC accommodates most student requests, like approvals are granted with remarkable ease, and courses undergo regular reviews. Even mass requests for paper re-evaluations have been allowed—something rare in most universities. He mostly forbids any kind of student punishment without due reason! Such a pro-student head of institute is rarely seen!

My suggestion as both, a first gen and a woman, have strong boundaries, be passionate about the actual lawyering pasts of the job, disinterested about everything else at work. there's no dearth of people from good universities etc etc but there's a real dearth of passionate, hard working people. Most just let it be a part of their CV, linkedin etc lol.

I am from a MCF too with no connections in the legal fraternity either. Believe me, working as a solo lawyer is indeed tough, but once you become a regular face in the court and judges recognise you for your legal acumen (specially procedural part) the sheer satisfaction you get from that is 100x more beautiful than a fat paycheck from an Indian law firm. Been there, seen that.

Have worked across both teams mentioned. Avirup's team is very close knit and kill it in terms of quality (across M&A, infrastructure and real estate risk management); Arun's team is a largeish team which does hardcore projects work and some back-end land due diligence. However, the best RE x Projects in the market in my opinion is Trilegal - the team is headed by Rahul Arora in Delhi NCR.

Whoever is telling you that knows nothing about anything. The people who do well in life in the law are people from the good NLUs - like NLSIU, NALSAR and NLUD. I live and work in England, where the legal profession is split up into solicitors (transactional lawyers who largely work in law firms) and barristers (largely self-employed courtroom advocates). Law graduates from Indian universities are well represented in the British legal profession. The number of people you'll find working at a magic circle, silver circle or biglaw type firm in a UK or Singapore-type environment who've studied law in India from unis like NALSAR and NUJS are just very high. Most Indian law graduates currently working in the UK are from one or other of the well-regarded T1 NLUs. I do not recall ever having come across anyone from RMLNLU here. Therefore, if you want to give yourself the best possible chance to access the highest quality global opportunities in law, don't listen to this advice you have just paraphrased in your comment.

1) Take accountability for your work.

2) Ask questions and then ask more questions.
3) Ask people to teach you, see them edit your drafts and learn.

4) Follow up with seniors

5) Read everything end to end.

6) Don't make grammatical errors.

7) Always keep the client in mind and understand the macro of every transaction because you'll only be assigned smaller pieces but don't lose sight of the bigger picture.

8) Don't gossip, be nice to everyone and be sincere.

As a student from XNLU, I genuinely felt disheartened seeing how our university is always placed in the outer ring of the Consortium logo — symbolically separated from the so-called ‘top NLUs’. Honestly, XNLU has decent infrastructure and potential, but due to inconsistent leadership and lack of vision over the years, we’ve been stuck in the same tier 3 label since inception.

We students truly want to change this perception and uplift the standard of our NLU. But what can we realistically do from our end? How can we, as students, contribute to improving our university’s standing and push it towards becoming a tier 2 NLU? Seniors and alumni, your guidance would mean a lot.

The Consortium logo has two rings — the inner one featuring the top NLUs, and the outer ring representing tier 2 and 3 NLUs. Doesn't this visual itself reinforce a hierarchy within institutions that are meant to stand for equality, justice, and unity? Shouldn’t the logo reflect equal standing rather than silent segregation?

Should I just quit my current in house role right now without a job in hand. And start looking for indipendent M&A projects, which I enjoy doing and have prior law firm experience as well. And if independent doesn't work out, will I get a good law firm role aftter an independent gig as an independent lawyer?

For all of JSA's meritocracy nonsense and "we don't have a partnership buy-in" it's notorious for being one of the hardest EP positions to sustain because for the first 3-5 years EPs make next to no money

The only actual correct take in this thread. IK's team was far too bloated for SAM to sustain especially considering his "special" remuneration arrangement. He's dropped off a lot of those folks to stay with JSA for good and now moving to CAM with only his confidantes.

He was not shown the door. He was in talks with CAM even when he was at SAM, but they weren't willing to part with as much money as he'd hoped for. He's used the JSA transition to drop some dead weight resources off and the whispers indicate that he's taken on a few legacy JSA clients as well with him.

Its been over 2 weeks since results were out and candidate’s preferences were submitted. Im yet to receive any communication of an interview despite getting a good rank. Has anyone who weote the exam received any subsequent communication or has any sort of info on that?

I already knew theres no transparency in how SC handles this recruitment but didnt think it will be so blatant to disregard the merit list altogether. I have negligible hopes from this but the optimist in me would like to believe that the SC had just faced some delay and its not just me who hasnt received any interview.

That is categorically false lol. Search up any recent rankings by deal volume and you’ll find the team among the top 5 highest in the country. The team left because JSA were being penny-pinchers. You can’t pull the T2 culture out of a firm just by switching buildings and hiring a few t1 partners.

NLUD has fallen a lot during the last three years. Almost all their good faculty have left, no quality research is coming out anymore, only random seminars and talks, and the students are having problems too as evidenced by campus deaths. But because of its location and no direct government interference, they are still better than NUJS of course.

Don't do it. Or if you do- consider that teaching might not be what you want it to be. There was a point- say 8 years ago- when teaching still meant there were young hungry minds who were excited to learn and liked you for teaching them. They wanted professors who taught them rigorous course materials. They liked the law and wanted to be good at it. Even then they werent always consistent or the best students- whatever- 70% of the time you were teaching you knew there was a point to it. Someone was listening and someone was learning. At worst- you had students who were disinterested. But you never really had students who were gleeful about humiliating and insulting you and getting you fired.

Thats not what it is today. Today teaching is- a test for you- go and prove to students who couldnt be bothered to do the reading everyday that you know what youre talking about after years of study. Because they might plagiarise their tests but they still get to sit in judgment over you because theyre paying customers. They might have a panic attack at being told to read a twenty page paper but they know they are smart and virtuous from social media and no adults in their entire life has had the courage or honesty to tell them they might have scope for self improvement. Go and prove you can speak for extended stretches of time without any indication that anyone is listening or even cares. Go and prove you can remain chipper and enthusiastic even when students are lost in their phone. That you lack the self respect to even be annoyed when only one student in a hundred is even engaged- after all, that one student is engaged- what else do you want? Go and prove that you dont take yourself seriously enough to even say anything when you ask students questions in class and they come back to you with chatgpt answers. Go and prove that you can dance around the political minefields, because while they might not listen to you teaching labour law or criminal procedure, they will be sure to record you the second you say anything they disagree with whether its politics or whether its simply "you guys need to work harder". Go and prove that you are malleable enough to play the game, fudge attendance, fudge grades, create assignments that a monkey could pass- anything at all to get good evaluation scores so you get a bare minimum cost of living raise and so you dont stand out when all your colleagues also play the game marking yourself out to be some sort of easy target. Prove your worth to university by organising events and doing administrative work because you arent hired for your knowledge of the law- youre just a worker in big corporate firm and students want to say they belong to a university where there are all of these frills. Go and prove your worth to university by "getting jobs and internships" for students by leveraging your contacts instead of the students just earning what they get on their own. They are customers and its your job to give them what they want. Because if you don't their parents will call your boss/ the registrar or VC and you will lose your job because you are some how the one who has failed. Honestly why would someone want this job when its turned into this?

I gave up other opportunities to spend a decade trying to make it work in academia. It has only gotten worse and worse over time. Do yourself a favour and know that youre not getting what you think you are. If you must do academia, then do yourself a favour and stick to public universities. I have yet to encounter a private university that was not 100% depressing.

Keep living in your dreams. NLS is not remotely cooked. Show me any other uni led by somebody with a master's and a PhD from oxford, and books published by both Oxford University Press and CUP. Show me another law university in India which is building the kind of research ethos NLS is. Then shoot off your mouth like this.

Beijing I have no idea about but I've been to Tokyo and New York. Everything was fixed price or runs by meter. At most 'rip off' experience was some overpriced tourist trap coffee shop or something like that; not charging different rates to different people on basis of language they speak. Heck, even in Mumbai, auto and taxis run by meter, and meter doesn't discriminate on the basis of language.
