I was considering making a shift to the m&a or general corporate practice area. I would really appreciate your advice on a) whether such a shift is advisable in the long term; b) would other firms reduce my level to A0 now while hiring me?; c) any other things that I should consider. My team is always bombarded with work with 10 am to 12 am being a very normal day. I do not think it is sustainable. Any advice would be helpful! please start with a chamber with the practice areas that interest you, gain experience and exposure (which will anyway be more and better at a smaller chamber/firm set up) and leverage this to switch to a law firm. I was in the same boat, and recently switched to civil & commercial litigation.

Every self-aggrandising lawyer needs to realise they're merely a cog in the wheel working late nights (for a salary which will inevitably stop owing to burnout) for investors and companies in multi-million round fundings. They're the ones increasing valuation, getting stock, potential cash-outs, and what nots. They're building, not just providing a service. Meanwhile, you're looking at your mobile for emails even at 11 pm and working through holidays.

Good point. Yes, NFSU Law gives out LLB, LLM, and PhD (Law). Given that it is primarily a post-graduate institution, it has more PhD students in law than even the older NLUs.

The issue is - this platform is primarily dominated by UG students in NLUs. They don't like any other group coming in—hence, you'll seldom see any discussion/posts about IIT KGP Law School, either. The crowd here detests both the NFSU Law and the IITKGP Law because both are national institutions, while their 'beloved' NLUs are state universities (yearning for the elusive national status).

My advice as a NUJS grad who took CLAT twice.

Being from a good NLU helps, yes. The main reason is not necessarily the impact of the institution, but the quality of your peer group at essentially any of the T-whatever, older NLUS. You also typically benefit from the institution's reputation, built on the goodwill of several successful years of alumni. I must also acknowledge that your average NLU peer would need to put in less effort or get by with a less "successful" CV, to reach the same achievement milestones, primarily Vac-schemes and T-1 jobs.

At the same time, doing really well (academically or through demonstrated experience) at other colleges, and in your case, SLS-N, is enough to bridge the gap for a T-1 goal or whatever corporate law aim a person has.

Give your best in the CLAT, try to get into the college of your choice, and do not worry about being a dropper; it never matters. At the same time, think about continuing with SLS-N and really assess your capability of making it to a college of your choice, before dropping out.

Leiden is not even close to UvA for AI which has the IviR, one of the world's leading institutes for tech and AI law. Having lived in The Netherlands, there is literally no hierarchy between the universities (except between the "research" universities and the Open Universiteit).

I have almost made the decision to take up the role at NLU now, even though I feel that this private university can give a much better international exposure in my field. The problem with international exposure is that I'm not inclined to go abroad.

Your parents' are correct, don't be an idiot to drop out.

Prepare while in that college, it being in NCR has it's own perks which you'll realise in coming years, most NLUs are not in metro cities with multiple forums, you'll get good internship exposure in Delhi and that will eventually be the deciding factor for start of your career.

And if in case you do wish to clear that idiotic exam, focus on and 2 things. Your reading comprehension and your GK. As a UG student, you may not be aware of it but since after 2019 pattern change, that exam is not but a simple ticket for those privileged with good English exposure to get direct entrance to NLUs. Every section required your utmost comprehension, even the legal section, which will have more than 80% of answers in the passage itself.

Rest is the GK part, with which you should be good. Be a champ and be thankful to whatever you're getting, you'll be more privileged by the end of your law clg due to your proximity to NCR. Otherwise clear CLAT but try to avoid any tier 2 city NLU, unless it's genuinely having good faculty.

I prepared for judiciary straight out of university in 2023 with credentials. However, SC decided otherwise and I started applying for dispute resolution and IBC roles at all kinds of law firms only to realise that me taking a break to prepare for the exam made me unemployable. I gave an interview and they rejected me saying that my career gap bothers them and it doesn’t align with they are looking for.

So I am currently in sls noida and will be giving clat 2026. I had started my clat prep in mid class 11th however I couldn't get a good rank in clat 2025 and wasn't focused enough. I really want to drop out of this college and give it my all but my parents are not agreeing to it because they don't trust me. Although this partial drop has been completely wasted as I couldn't manage my time efficiently as the college is hectic and really demanding. Should I drop out or continue with this college? I really dont want to spend my 5 years here and regret later. My aim is corporate law and I am sure I won't go to litigation. PS: I am currently 18 years old and in my first year. Bro, honestly, I’m not as into litigation as I once thought I’d be. It’s definitely not about the salary, once you factor in the associated perks, the overall compensation in the initial years more or less balances out.

For me, the main reason is the lifestyle I want and the environment I miss. My ideals might be unpopular, at least in this forum, but Delhi is not where I see myself spending the coming years of my life. And it’s not just Delhi, I genuinely enjoy village surroundings and less crowded places. Those are usually the areas people want to avoid, but having lived in Delhi my entire life and only visiting villages or towns (across India) for a couple of months a year since childhood, I’ve realized I no longer want to sustain life in metro cities. I’m willing to trade future “success” and a higher salary for the chance to work for society while staying as far away from metros as possible.

Honestly, I just want a job that allows frequent transfers and keeps me close to actual natural life. UPSC, at least, offers that. Most cadres have only one or two big cities, and the rest are small towns and that’s exactly what I’m looking for. (Once & if, selected) Any transfer to any major city within the cadre won't survive more than 2-3 years, the rest of my life I can avoid all the chaos and actually live peacefully and enjoy being alive.

2. As for writing in English:

(a) You began the conversation by writing in English. Write in Hindi, why don't you? And for good measure, write in Hindi using a Hindi keyboard, not an English keyboard (on windows go to language settings and change accordingly). You know why you should write in Hindi using a Hindi keyboard in your LI conversations? because the LI moderators/admin want the site to be accessible to the blind. Hindi words, written using English letters, totally messes up the interaction that assistive technology software packages used by blind people have with digital material. However, this doesn't happen if you write in Hindi using a Hindi keyboard. Therefore, write in Hindi using a Hindi keyboard for that reason, if nothing else.

(b) English is no more uniquely a language identifiable with the British. Top Indian legal academics - Upendra Bakshi, B.S. Chimne - all write in English. India has uniquely adapted English to its circumstances and needs. So go figure!

Especially if you are young - first take a rain check on if teaching is what you really want to do in the long run. Don't be in a situation where you suddenly decide to take up law practice later. It will be very difficult to shift since you won't have any actual work experience - and not many will take a chance on someone with only teaching experience. There is also a cap on what you can earn as an AP or P. Also - perhaps more importantly you can earn after a career of 20 years - your law firm / litigation peers will start earning in 5-10 years (even lesser). You should ideally have a good reason for signing up for less money and uncertain growth for life. There could be other things that academia could provide - that make it make sense for you.

Some would even argue that the ideal path for people who want to pursue higher education law teaching basically isn't in India. Shifting abroad is difficult, costly, makes you loose touch with family, filled with vast uncertainty - given the backlash in western countries towards immigration.

In your situation - Tier 1 NLUs might have the advantage of better international recognition - which might help you later (in India or abroad)- which most private universities will certainly lack. That said - make sure you are taking a well considered decision
