Everyone knows the markers of how well you learned are not that you passed but your specific grades and whether professors remember you and recommend you.

Administrators are focused on the money and often at least mildly racist. Paying more than locals for the same lectures doesn't mean we hear them differently. Is it unjust? Yes. Does that mean no one else should get the education you and I got, even if they can afford it, because we are feeling bitter about inequality that is outside our control and has been here for centuries? Please enlighten me, how does one "think differently" after doing a foreign llm? Unless you've had a substandard legal education in India? LLM courses are designed in a manner where it's extremely difficult to even fail a course. I should know, I teach at a top Russell Group uni. And enough of the 'sour grapes' arguments, I've read for an LLM at a premier London law school. I had a tier-1 law school education in India, and found very little difference in the courses, both teaching and pedagogy-wise.

I agree with the networking part, but how many of them are actually able to make succesful careers out of an LLM through networking? Very few. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry has a foreign llm these days. Even the number of oxbridge grads are quite significant. The people who are actually able to successfully make meaningful connections and better their career from an LLM are maybe 1 in 100. To think a 10 month degree is worth most middle-class families' life savings is foolhardy, to say the least.

ANALYSIS: IMO this is a deeply problematic ruling. It’s unacceptable for men to objectify and sexualise women based on their looks. In a classroom, the teacher is allowed to make that decision. Just like in an office, the employer does make that decision to a considerable extent. What you wear outside the class is indeed your choice. When you make the choice to put in the effort while interning or working, but refuse to do so while going to the classroom, you are making clear where your priorities lie. If you face the consequences of that, then don't go crying a river.

No. At the end of the day, the content of your ideas and knowledge is what matters, when you go to the bottom line. Formal dress or whatever will, at best, be impressive packaging. In the corporate world, where so many things are based on first impression, it is important to get the packaging right. At the same time, even in that world, whether or not you can get the job done is what is far more important. You might have a slick personal presentation style which makes you good to put in front of clients, but if you don't have the knowledge, skills or ideas to cope with the demands of a client's problem(s), the quality of your speaking style and your dress sense will matter little. I think most clients would rather pay £800 an hour or whatever they do tend to pay for the services of commercial lawyers to someone who may have forgotten to shave when they came into work on a particular day and has blue stubble all over his chin but has something substantive and smart to say, than to someone whose face looks completely smooth but whose ideas are of little use to anybody.

However in the world of academia, where first impressions are less important, which requires careful thought, sustained reflection, constant revision of ideas, this is not the case. I don't see a student whose written and verbal answers to a professor are unremarkable, but who takes the effort to dress well, getting a recommendation letter or better marks over a student who may dress less formally but whose intellect is up there.

Also, easy is not the way to think of it. There's base formula of success which anyone can reach within 6-7 years of law school and then there are idiosyncratic qualities that each school looks for. Good referees go a long way. Think professors who can write a letter with examples that actually persuade hiring committees, and one or two others at the top of your field, like a judge or a UN special rapporteur or a successful alum of the university you are applying to. Learn to write good application essays that are tailored to your profile. That much will take you to Harvard. The other two it is hard to say what they are looking for each year. Make sure your essays and recommendations are really competitive is all I can say.

As someone entering their fourth year with no RCC to rely upon, I am really anxious about getting a PPO in disputes before graduating.

I need some realistic advice before I start throwing my CV into the void.

For context, I’ve done a couple of internships at T2 firms in disputes which I liked. In talks with one of them for a call-back. I also managed to intern with one of the T1 firms, albeit in a different practice area. I am at the top of my class and and have good co-curriculars as well.

I am trying to understand which firms (and if possible partner initials) should I target to maximise my chances of getting callbacks and a PPO.

I’m looking for Delhi NCR ideally, but I will happily brave the Mumbai locals if it means securing a job. I’m not blindly chasing only SAM / CAM / KCO / AZB /Tri either. I would love to work with firms like JSA, Saraf, Indus, Argus, DSK, B&P, etc. or frankly any firm that offers decent pay (80k plus) and I stand a decent chance of getting recruited. I can also do with lower pay for now, provided the firm is such that there are good prospects of laterally moving into a better paying position after 1-2 years.

Which firms, teams, or specific partners should I be targeting? Who is actually receptive to this kind of profile and has a track record of handing out PPOs?

I have a background in Capital Markets - Associate Trainee with a T 2 firm and I wish to pursue CS because i want to switch from Cap Marks to M&A altogether. For this I have decided to pursue CS and in order to support myself in a major metro I have decided to work with a company which is not known by people but they'll pay me enough to afford rent in Mumbai.

I am very sure that I will be able to clear CS. Do you think doing this is advisible?
