Law School Admissions are coming up! Cheers to the prospoective law school students!

We all very well know the importance of the knowledge of the credibility and standing of a law school we would like to join in our future. This blog contains a report of the same where, on the analysis of Outlook and India Today, after interviewing some students, I have come up with this rankings.

There may be dissnting opinions about this, and I genuinely respect them. We know the probability of variations in a law school rankings, or for any other college/university, for that metter, and therefore, this blog shall venture upon giving a new dimension to the rankings of the law schools of India.

Further, it must be mentioned here that, as has been mentioned in the first paragraph, this has an analysis of the rankings of Outlook and India Today, and therefore this blog shall also include non-CLAT law schools too. Also, this is a ranking on 10 parameters that hasn’t been done anywhere and therefore, I hope to make this report more credible.

The parameters on which I have based the rankings are:

Faculty, Placements, Seniority, Infrastructure, Facilities, Strictness, Safety, Arbitrariness, Quality of Education, and Quality of Student.

Now, before going further, the description and basis of the above mentioned parameters shall be discussed.

Faculty: This forms a very important part reflecting the reputation of the University and has a very important impact on the future of a student in every college/university of every field/profession. The teaching style of the faculties, their accountability to the administration, the interaction they have with the students, all of which bears a very important reflection on a student’s life and his behaviour.

Placements: Before joining any college/university, we always ask the students of that college/university about the placements. Obviously, law schools are judged significantly on this aspect and you’ll find every rankings including this parameter. Placements of a law school which includes, Law Firm, Corporate, In-house etc. are various sub-fields where a law student can go for in future and a first year could plan his/her activities on the basis of the prospective future. It may be noted that due to overwhelmingly exaggerated focus on this field, students often forget the basis of the law schools. The primary motive of a law school is to create a professional lawyer, and the product of a law school is based on the quality and the knowledge that a student has gained from that law school, with a special emphasis on the National Law Universities which are not made for producing corporate lawyers but to produce qualitative lawyers. Furter, Placements are not definite that anyone could predict in future. It soleley depends on how you perform at the time of interview and the college/university cannot do anything at that very critical time.

Seniority: I think this doesn’t needs any clarification. This paramter is concerned with the year in which a law school was established.

Infrastructure: This may form an important part before joining a college/university. We tend to give a significant focus on the buildings and the gardens of a college/university and may judge the administration on that.

Facilities: A college/university provides various fcailities to a student in terms of internet, sports outlet, canteen etc. and which influences the life os a law student significantly. The ambience of a law school is often adjudged on the basis of this paramter.

Strictness: This is often hated by every student of any college/university because it curbs the freedom of a student and therefore it is also an important factor. I consider it to be important because where strictness in the hands of administration doesn’t lie, the students are prone to many illegal things and activities and therefore, parents always venture out to look for the rules and regulations of a college/university.

Safety: This may be called an extension of the previous paramter. This is specially based on the incidents of harrasement, and accidents that have happened in the near future in many law schools, special emphasis on the NLUs and therefore it may be considered an important factor to base the upcoming rankings too.

Arbitrariness: This follows the attitude of the administration responsible for a college/university and their behaviour towards the students of that college/university. The excessive prower in the hands of few necessarily leads to the downgrading of that college/university. Freedom of speech and expression of students is necessary for the proper functioning of that college/university and it also keeps an eye on the working of the administration.

Quality of Education: This aspect is linked with the level of education that takes place in a college/university and it may be an extended point of the first paramter of this report. This ranking depends on the course material which is distributed in a college/university, the library resources etc.

Quality of Students: The level of a batch and their competence to handle things professionally is also an important factor in judging an institution. It also has a bearing on the behaviour of a law student in ways of his/her interaction and exposure comtemplated by the competence of his/her batch.

After succesfully explaining and giving a detailed reasoning, the rankings are as follows:

Law SchoolFacultyPlacementsSeniorityInfrastructureFacilitiesStrictnessSafetyArbitrarinessQoEQoSEffective Ranking

QoE: Quality of Education, QoS: Quality of Student.

P.S.: The above rankings are based on the responses from the students of these colleges/universities.

There may be dissenting opinions which should be respected but to have qualititative analysis, we must consider it.

Comments were disabled on this post - was that intentional? Have enabled, since having this up without debate wouldn't make much sense...

Basically, I'm not sure whether this is satire of the previous ranking or is a serious effort right now.

Though I have to say I love the 'strictness' and 'arbitrariness' criteria. But how on earth did GNLU score 4th 'best' in strictness?

I wonder if ANY level of effort ever goes into these rankings. As someone from NALSAR; if we lie below NLSIU one QoE and arbitrariness at the present moment I do not even know how to react to it. Everyone in the fraternity knows that despite NLSIU students keeping the high traditions; have been hampered in making law school a fulfilling experience by Venkata Rao and his cronies.

I wouldn't go into the substance of most of the other points. These two jumped out at me from the rankings and I wished to point it out.

NLIU is anyday better than NLUJ. Being a student of NLUJ, I know the pathetic quality of teachers here and the worst VC, a national university could ever have.
Trust me, NLIU is ahead.

why hasn't NLUD been included in the rankings?

These rankings are completely random. For instance, NALSAR definitely has better faculty than NLS right now. Second JGLS should be ranked much higher on quality of faculty and infrastructure. Third, NUJS and NLUJ deserve a higher rank than NLIU. Fourth, you haven't factored in performance in extra-curricular activities. The list goes on.

No way! Do you even know the condition of both these NLUs, NUJS and NLUJ! The VCs of these universities are pathetic and even worse for NUJS which is always trapped under some scams and harassment issues. The level of faculty at NLUJ is going down, local teachers are teaching there.

NLUJ is better than NUJS and in my personal opinion it is behind NLIU in every term. I have got to know that the standard of faculty at nujs is going down year by year and the college is going to dogs.

This mudslinging on Law universities, perhaps factually correct, may put future students in a quandary as to why these young universities are not able to upkeep their standard even for 1 or 2 decades as compared to The universities like Cambridge and Oxford which have very high standards and traditions running for centuries and that too with a healthy competition. As a parent, I visited many websites of these law universities and I was aghast. Very few are keeping with times. old notifications, dating even last decade are loitering on the websites. None of the websites have a uniform structure to help a novice or parent. Suited/booted students are the only common pics. What are they doing after pass-out, there is no clue. The ILS pune has a exam notification of 2009 still on, in 2015. It is herculean effort to find fee structure of the top two universities. One has a scan copy that too skewed of last year. Some have breakups with no total amount. The sites of Jodhpur, Gandhinagar are visually impressive. Bhopal, Raipur are good too, as are the sites of Kochi and vaizag (relatively young law universities). There may be others doing good job but very little info is available to me. It is very difficult to make a choice, as there are cross current of views on all universities. With fees running into 2 lakh or more except ILS (35000 in 2014)without residential studies, One needs to know if true education is imparted in these spanking classrooms with huge campuses, suited students, toting laptops and wifi on the campus. Currently, faculty, safety, and placements history are the only criteria, barring the fees.
